;A New Year's Resolution for 2009
A New Year's resolution should focus on the tangible...those
things we can wrap our arms around, change and drive, to
better our lives. Over indulging in
the things we can't
impact ultimately breaks our will and
hearts, creating unhealthy stress. Alone,
we can't change our country, the economy, the war, health
care, the mortgage crisis, unemployment .... But as
a group, we can commit to taking small steps in the right
direction.
What we can effect is the things we love...our
family, our health, careers and dancing. Look out for one another,
as we face challenging times. We
can all make a difference.
If everyone makes an effort to introduce two new
friends, family members, co workers to a dance, we can triple
the size of the dance community. Add this to your resolution
list and lets make this the pivotal year for social
dancing. We can all succeed....... together.
Happy New Year's
Time Capsule
The year was 1975. The Vietnam war had come to an
end and President Ford was almost assassinated here at home.
The Pittsburgh Steelers would go on to win the Super
bowl and a new show called "Saturday Night Live" would debut on TV with
a young host by the name of George Carlin. "God Father 2" won
supreme at the box office and Sony delivered the first video recorder.
It used the obsolete Beta
format which was simply ground breaking at the
time. Disco was still in its infancy but a hot new
singer was climbing the charts. The "Andre True Connection"
was riding the wave from her hit single "More More More" as
her "Connection dancers" - George Velazquez, Mia Contardi,
Craig Yee and Hillary Peck traveled the country hustle dancing with her
on stage. The "New York Hustle" dance studios , (Jeff & Donna
Shelley) would continue to grow their chain of hustle dance
studios thru out New York and the Ralph Lew dance
company opened the festivities for the Harvest Moonball
competition held at Madison Square
Garden.
There was a chain of retail record stores thru out Brooklyn,
Queens and Long Island that carried all the top dance records. "Melody
Song Shops" had them all. The 12 inch 45 vinyl was just being
developed as Tom Moulton experimented with the concept. The
first production 12 inch to be release was "Ten Percent" by
Double Exposure.
33 years ago, the top rated songs by Melody Song Shops were:
1) Love To Love You Baby - Donna Summer
2) Sunny - Yamboo
3) Casanova Brown - Gloria Gaynor
4) I Love Music - The O'Jays
5) Heavy Love - David Ruffin
6) Summer Place 76' - Percy Faith
7) Undecided Love - The Chequers
8) Date With The Rain - Frankie Gee
9) Boom Bam Bump - Freeman Nehls
10) Love Machine - The Miracles
11) Aggravation - Martha Veloz
12) Do The Latin Hustle - Eddie Drenon
13) Magic Of The Blue - Blue Magic
14) Nobody Loves Me Like You Do Do - Jeanne Burton
15) Every Beat Of My Heart - Crown Heights Affair

Life Time Achievement - Class of 2008
The Hustle Hall Of Fame is pleased to announce the Class of 2008,
recipient(s) of the "Life Time Achievement
Award." Each fall, our panel selects, from hundreds
of dancers, the very few that have set themselves apart from the rest -
giving the dance world creativity, displaying talent, a true
passion to share with others and a loving heart for you
and dance. This past September, our five member team
began our annual search. We held a round of critical
discussions in efforts to select candidates worthy of this prestigious
recognition.
In October, 2008, we voted.
On behalf of Juan Hernandez - Virginia, Mark James - Long
Island, Susan Marolda - New Jersey,
Bobby "O" Ossias - Florida and Ron Bess - New Jersey, only one
dancer received unanimous votes from all
five panelists.
On behalf of the Hustle Hall Of Fame, it is our distinct honor to
announce the induction of Arte Phillips into the "Life Time
Achievement" division. Ironically, on November 12th, Arte
slipped away. This year, Arte is the sole inductee.
Congratulations Arte, we honor your life's work, we recognize you and
love you.

Center annual contest)
My Perfect Dance Partner
It starts with a glance, a vague curiosity, a gathering of interest and
respect; a possibility that she and I could dance. Then eye contact for
just a second, the music begins, one of us approaches… I ask, she nods
approvingly. With extended hands that close around each other, we enter
into the magical world of Dance! The perfect dance partner for
me is a woman who adores me and I adore her, from the first moment we
meet. We connect instantly with the pulse, rhythm and energy of the
music and with each other. The bustling around us slowly funnels into
just her and me. She and I are now against a backdrop of onlookers
riveted to us. Our normal “Lead & Follow” is abolished, whereby
a whole new paradigm of fluidity and success arises, totally freeing us
of any mental or physical constraints we had from our previous dancing.
My partner magically blends the positions I have led her in, with what
I surround and complement her with. We play with each other, we play
off each other. Our dancing is fun and creative. Every thought
conceived, whether hers or mine, is executed instantly and
harmoniously. I make the greatest use of her feline body, acknowledging
each of her majestic and alluring embellishments and flawless spins. I
do things I have never done before, naturally, with precision timing…
making the greatest use of the floor. I am energized and mesmerized by
her incredible beauty. We dance effortlessly, capturing all its nuances
in perfect synchronicity. Time is transcended! The space and those
watching us evolved! Synergy unlike anywhere else! This is a dream come
true for just a few minutes never to be matched- where everything is,
and feels, perfect! If only this exalted state could continue… but the
music disappears, and so do we, in a loving embrace of sublime
appreciation and gratitude for each other. When I regain my
seat, I pause to reflect on how psychologically and spiritually
uplifted I am by the magnanimity of this experience. I realize this was
the best dance I will ever have! Totally fulfilled, I still go on
though, knowing I am not the same dancer I once was, and confident I
can cause anything with my next perfect dance partner. Thank
you very much!
Daryl M. Polansky

Hi Ron,
I was taken back to read the incredible biography on Pierre Dulaine. We
studied under Pierre and Yvonne in the mid 80's. He not only improved
my partner and me in our dance floor abilities but gave us a winning
attitude. Over the last few years I have loss contact with dancing as
our family business has been our top priority. Your
newsletter has helped keep us in touch. I had no idea that the motion
picture Take the lead was the life of Pierre. As soon as I read that I
was out purchasing the video from Blockbuster. All I can say
is thank you and congratulations to Pierre for all he has done for
dancing and building the self esteem of others in their venture to
dance.
Happy Holidays,
Philip Genova
Ron,
This was a copy of part of the casting call for the television
show.
(Drop the Ho-Ho's and do the hustle, it's time to DANCE YOUR ASS OFF!
10 men and women will waltz their way into a healthier lifestyle. With
the help of our top-notch professional dance partners, you will become
the ultimate dancing machine! The Biggest Loser meets Dancing
With The Stars! Break the routine and learn OURS! You too can dance
like the stars, so put down that milkshake and shake what your momma
gave you! The Oxygen Network was seeking men and women who are at least
the age of 21. You must be 40 to 60 pounds overweight and
must look no older than your 40's. You must want to accept
the challenge in the dance competition series in which your loss is the
biggest gain.)
The casting agency called me back and said that there still might be a
chance for me this season if one of the 10 that was already picked
drops out. So, who knows. He told me that I was in
the top 20 out of 1,000's. It made me feel good. There will
be a weigh-in and a dance off each week for 12 weeks. It was one of the
most exciting events that has happened to me in a long time.
Who would know that being overweight could pay off! LOLOLO Now, back to
reality!! Have a very happy and healthy holiday season.
Fondly,
Susan ( New York)
Letters For Elena
Hey Ron, it's been a long time, I've just heard about Elena and felt
compelled to write. I've not seen or spoken with her or Scott in years
but I do remember how real she was back in those heady, competitive
days. She always had a smile and hug for you every time you saw her.
You can see how much she loved to dance by just looking in her eyes.
All I see now in my minds eye is here beautiful smile. As it should be.
Please give my best to Scott and pass my condolences to her family.
Peace
Franc. "Perico" Reyes (motion picture writer/producer)
............................................................................................................................................
I was greatly saddened to hear about Elena's passing. She was truly a
down to earth lovely lady. I remember competing against and
performing with both Scott and Elana and I can say that in an arena
full of big egos, Elena was as down-to-earth and as sweet as anyone
could be. Both her and Scott were just great to be around and
their demeanor never changed - upbeat and positive - win, lose or
draw. Really sad to have such a nice person leave us so
young. My heartfelt condolences go out to Scott and Elena's
family. May she forever dance in heaven.
Keep dancing,
Derrick Allan (New York)

"Spot Light" Pierre Dulaine
His life is so inspiring that it was made into a major motion
picture. Never before, has one man set out to
accomplish so much while giving back to the dance
community, ten fold. Through out his dance career he has
reached levels with mesmerizing views. Pierre Dulaine
is one of a kind.
He has always "Taken the Lead" and overcome all
obstacles. Pierre has been an incomparable dancer,
performer and teacher to millions world wide. During his
on-going dance career he has taken
that leadership role to
a higher level. At the early age of 14,
Pierre began to study ballroom dancing in his home town
of Birmingham, England. By the age of 21 he
was recognized as a full member of the Imperial
Society of Ballroom Teachers. He developed a dance partnership in
England and ultimately won the "Dual Of the
Giants" competition at the famous Royal Albert Hall in London. Pierre
continued competing and won numerous competitions
including the "All England Professional Latin
American Championships." In 1971, he flew
to the United States for a short visit. He arrived in
New York and was so overwhelmed by the city he decided to
stay. Two years later, while at a dance studio, in New York City, he
met a unique dancer. She was teaching ballroom
classes at the time, although she had formal
training in ballet. This accomplished ballerina developed an
inseparable partnership with Pierre in Latin, adagio and
theater arts. Yvonne Marceau was
brilliant. Together, they returned to his home town
in London to train with Pierre's long time
mentor John DelRoy. That same year they would compete
together in Blackpool. This magical couple would wow
audiences and judges everywhere with their uncanny ability to execute
lifts with an effortless touch. Their creativity was
plentiful.
They implemented the skill sets they attained under the coaching
of Delroy, a former exhibition dancer, and from world
renown Peter Martins, of the New York City Ballet.
They developed their signature breath taking partnering techniques that
became their trade mark. After a successful round at Blackpool
in the Latin division they would direct their focus on the
exhibition division. They would go on to win the most prestigious title
in their division, not once but four times, in 1977, 1978,
1979 and again in 1982. As disciplined dancers, Pierre and
Yvonne would frequent Alexis Dance Studio, (87th
& Broadway in
Manhattan), to practice and rehearse for
shows and competitions. While at Alexis, they met the
"incredible hustle dancers from Manhattan and the Bronx," Pierre
shares. "We fell in love with this brand new dance and as we were doing
so much lift/exhibition/aerial work, it fit right in with where we were
at that stage of our dance career," explains Pierre. Not your typical
hard core hustle dancers, Pierre & Yvonne brought a
softer side to the hustle, utilizing finesse
and elegance on the dance floor. Combining their
electrifying adagio with hustle made them so engaging to
watch. This new found dance initiative would take them to
television shows like the popular "Soap Factory" and
competitions on the syndicated television show "Dance Fever," where
they successfully moved on to the semi finals.
Like a surgeons knife,
Pierre's precision-like choreography
made complicated movements appear so simplistic and
fluid, as he and Yvonne would demonstrate moving
artistry.
Pierre would enter a new phase in his life as he ventured to
retire from active professional competitions to open his first
full service dance studio in Clifton, NJ. At his new
studio, Pierre would host his own dance
socials, exhibitions and a unique event. "The Dulaine Dance
Cup" was an invitational competition that brought some of the most
exciting dance couples of the day to his studio. It was the talk of the
industry. The premier couples were invited to compete: Eddie
Vega & Nelly Cotto, Lisa Nunziella & Danny
Llaurado, Tony & Susan
Marolda, James Garcia & Diane K.
Nardone, Juan Hernandez & Donna
Chaudoir,
Ronald Ottis Jennings & Alane Trevisani, Ralph Ramirez
& Maria Gomez, Ricky Quintana &
Laudes Jones, Arte Phillips & Maria Torres, Billy Fajardo
& Sandra Rivera, Ron Bess & Lisa Zimmerman.
(today the studio is known as the Continental).
In 1984 along with Gary & Lori Pierce, Pierre
& Yvonne had a dream to bring
ballroom dancing to the legitimate stages around the country, no
different then ballets. The American Ballroom Theater was born
and together the group would appear all over the US, Europe
and many countries in Asia. After sharing his love of dance on stage
with millions of people world wide, it was time for the next
phase and reaching a new audience. Pierre launched
a dance project with a new target
- spreading ballroom to children, that could
learn the dance and perform it. Giving back had become the
mission that Pierre would under take. Public schools would be the focus
point. What better way to share the elegance,
discipline and artistry of dance then with urban children that would,
under normal circumstances, never enjoy
this exposure. Pierre and Yvonne can be seen
featured in the motion picture, that they co directed, "Mad
Hot Ballroom," a documentary on 4th & 5th graders learning and
competing in ballroom at public schools. Pierre is
the master of ceremonies at the competitions where students
from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens compete in merangue, fox-trot,
rumba, tango and Swing for the Challenge trophy. The film is
an in-depth study of the positive effects that ballroom dancing brings
to children. You can see the pride and self esteem all over
their faces of the children, and on their
parents. After years of working with inner city
kids, teaching the fine art of ballroom dancing, Pierre was approached
by Diane Nabatoff, a movie producer, that was interested in
having his work with children made into a biographical
film. Pierre had created "Dancing Classrooms" -
teaching public school students the fundamentals of ballroom
dancing. He excitedly agreed to share his story with
the world. In April of 2006, "Take The Lead" came to
life in movie theaters all over the country. Antonio
Banderas played the lead role of Pierre Dulaine. A versatile actor,
Banderas had played lead roles in major films like Zorro,
Evita, and Mambo Kings. He was a perfect fit ."It was a great honor to
be portrayed by Antonio Banderas, he is a most wonderful person,"
shares Pierre. The movie "Take The Lead" focuses on Pierre's work
with inner city school kids, giving them the
inspiration to achieve what ever they put their minds too.
It's well acted and a fine portrayal of the challenges of
motivating kids. The movie grips you like Rocky, over coming the odds
while leaving viewers feeling fortunate to
have individuals like Pierre - putting his love of
dance and helping others, first. In 2006, when the
movie was filmed, Pierre's program was reaching 120
New York City public schools with more then 12,000
students participating. In 2007 / 2008 Pierre's
group has doubled, expanding to 233 NY City public

Letters For Elena Nurse
The dance community mourns the passing of a wonderful dancer, on and
off the floor. Elena Scott was a pioneer in the hustle and achieved
great success along with her partner/husband Scott. She leaves
behind a loving family and a wonderful dance legacy. Here are a few
letters in memory of Elena.
May she rest in peace.
.....................
Ron-
I'm deeply saddened by the passing of Elena Nurse. We toured together
back in the late 70's early 80's. She was a great person. Full of fun,
loads of energy and had a great dancing spirit. Scott was lucky to have
her as a partner. They once beat me and Sandra Rivera at a dance
contest in Long Island. My heart felt condolences to her family.

Hey Ron ,
My condolences to the Nurse Family:
Indeed it is sad news. I do remember Scott and Elena, they
were very much dedicated to the hustle and did a fantastic job.
Wherever there was a contest or a dance, u can bet Scott and Elena were
there, adding extra spice to the hustle. Elena was a quiet and a
pleasant soul. May she Rest in Peace! Heaven must be having a
wonderful Hustle Congress, cuz the Best of the Best are there.
Peace Be with U Elena Nurse.
Always

Hi Ron,
Well I met Scott and Elena many years ago, when I was dating Keith
Merriwether, Scott and Keith were very good friends so we double dated
a lot, Elena and I developed a nice friendship, I remember the
times we spent out at different clubs dancing the night away,
especially Monday nights at Alexis Dance Studio there I watched and
learned and was very inspired by Elena, she was a kind and gentle
person and will be missed much.
Tina
.....................
Hi Ron, I was shocked to the core to hear the passing of Elena. I
hadn't seen her or Scott in 20 some years but will always remember the
excitement and energy they brought to dancing.
They didn't just compete but were top rate social dancers too. They
always brought it. I had attended many of the contests they
were in and you know Ron, they didn't always win but
Elena always carried herself in a classy manner.
She would congratulate the winners and showed that she had
great sportsmanship. . We need more Elena's in
dancing.
God Bless,
James
.....................
Ron,
I remember Elena's wonderful smile and her sweet demeanor. I
recall
competing against Scott and Elena way back in the "hey day"
of hustle dancing.
She was lovely to watch. I'm truly sad to know that she is no
longer with us. However, I'm glad to have had the pleasure of
knowing this gracious and brave lady.

All you had to say was "Scott & Elena" and the dance
communiity knew precisely who you were referring
too, no last name needed. It is with great
sadness that we share the passing of an incredible
dancer, Elena Nurse. Elena was
an early dance pioneer, along with her partner Scott,
that competed in many of the biggest
dance contests as well as performing
on numerous television shows
like "Dance Fever" and "Soul Alive". With
great floor skills, adagio and star quality showmanship,
Elena she was an inspiration to many other
dancers. One of the top competitors in the 70's and 80's, we
send our heart felt condolences to her family, her daughters
and her extended dance family. Please keep her in
your prayers.

Holiday Spectacular - Summary
Snow flurries covered the town but that didn't deter dancers from
coming out to celebrate and enjoy the 16th annual Holiday
Spectacular, hosted by Donna Boyle and Ron Bess. The guests
were dressed to the nines, looking simply, marvelous. The
party returned to the most exciting ballroom in the
state. The dance floor at the Stardust is huge,
accommodating as many as 200 dancers on the massive floor at one
time. Special thanks to Joyce from the
Stardust, Herman's Deli, Danceclassics.com and our volunteers
(Diane Weinberg, Frank Mazarella and Anita Gicone) for making this such
a memorable evening. The party kicked off
with a dance lesson as DJ Mark spun the best hustle classics and mixed
ballroom, swing and Latin music.

Letters to the Editor
(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month,
unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)
Determined, energetic, generous, able to achieve against all odds, his
uniqueness is what made him so special...Arte Phillips was a true
Aquarian...much ahead of his time.
When it came to dancing, teaching or choreographing, he was a visionary
who loved to spend time thinking about how he could make things more
exciting and more entertaining, showering the world of dance with all
his thoughts and new ideas.
Arte's heart was always in the right place. He treasured his many
friends and acquaintances and wanted to give back as much as he could.
He taught me so much about Hustle, improved my dancing and teaching
skills and if it weren't for Arte and everything I learned from him I
would not be choreographing and directing my 8th Hustle Team.
I will miss Arte, as will we all...but be comforted in knowing he is
"up there" with Eddie and Butchie, in all his glory, dancing his ass
off!

Dear Editor,
People have been asking me for years now if I can get them a
lesson with my husband, Donnie Shields. I remember living in
Philadelphia, about twelve years ago, learning the Hustle for
the first time and hearing of this amazing dancer in New York called
Donnie. People were talking about his complicated moves and yet
executed with so much talent and finesse. So many trying to copy his
moves or learn from him. Years later, everytime he would be asked to
teach a lesson, he'll always say no, either he was too busy,
he didn't want to compete with other teachers. Anyways,
fastforwarding to about two weeks ago, he taught a Hustle
lesson to one of my couples and really enjoyed it. So, he decided to
give teaching another try. Since we are not so much at the moment on
the dancing scene, it is hard to reach out to some of the
people who wanted to learn from him, so I figured your newsletter might
help. Donnie is now teaching in our own studio, in Long
Island, levels Intermediate and Advanced only.
If anybody would like to learn from his unique style, patterns
and lead technique, they can contact him for schedule and rates, at 516
318 7127.
Thank you,
Raluca (New York)

Dear Ron,
Thank you so much to all of my friends who came to celebrate my
birthday at Stepping Out on November 26, 2008. I am so very
grateful to Simone, who allowed me the privilege to celebrate at her
hustlejam dance, to my wonderful friend Nelson "Paradise" Roman who not
only played the best music ever as he always does but for also creating
an outrageous vibe all through the studio; to the many dancers (Louie
Orlando, John Merisier, Robert Lawrence, Zulma Rodriguez, Colette
Antonelli, Dr. Steve, and my brother Alex Jack whose health has
improved tremendously, just to name a few) who danced with me during my
birthday dance; to Lori Brizzi, our person of the year once again who
took time out of her very busy schedule to join us and a very
special thanks to my close friends Marianne Gonzalez, Tariq Brown,
Keith Harrison and Janet DiGirolamo who made it all
happen... and ofcourse to you Ron, for putting it in your
dancetalk newsletter and for coming to celebrate with me as well.
I love you all....JoJo (NYC)

Hey Ron,
I have to first confess, I didn't vote in the readers awards
but still wanted to congratulate Roberto Pagan.
I don't know if your readers know this but he goes back to the early
days like many other greats. He is one those few dancers that
has kept it going since the 70's. And we all know that there
aren't that many from back then still competing and doing shows. I
don't dance that much anymore and sometimes struggle just to tie my
shoes but for Roberto, to still keep going, dam that is
impressive....and he didn't pay me to write this. LOL
Tony Cianno (Brooklyn)
..........................
Dear Ron,
I know you've been flooded with tributes to Arte, but I just
wanted briefly to add my thoughts:
I did not know Arte well--I never had any private lessons with him,
but I did attend his workshops whenever possible, because his
teaching skills were exceptional. I can think of no one whose
good opinion I
wanted more. There is no question that he was a pivotal figure in the
local dance scene. He stood out on the dance floor
with his ability to combine an extremely high level of
technical skill with virtually unlimited
freedom to express personal style and musical interpretation.
His joy in dancing and performing for an audience was evident.
I regret that Arte did not have the opportunity to create
choreography
for one of the network dance reality shows, it order to present
the evolving nature of hustle to mainstream America.
I hope that one of the many dancers he influenced
will be able to do this.
He will be well remembered.

Dear Ron,
Thank you for the birthday wish in dancetalk, it was so nice to hear
from some dear friends that I don't get to see that often but thank the
lord for the internet. I enjoyed your article on the music,
winds of change, and the new popularity of dance style music. I don't
want to sound like an old fuddy duddy but I grew up on
the smooth dance, R& B, like The
Delfonics, Stylistics, Archie Bell and Teddy Pendagrass.
It is nice to hear that the younger singers are moving in this
direction.
Happy Holidays to you and your family,
Kymberly Chester (CA)
Happy Birthday wishes to
Bruce Haslam, Stacie Stirling, Lori
Offredo, Carl Charles, Dottie Sillano, Elise

pancreatic caner that has now spread to his liver.

Wind of change
The presidential campaigned fostered the
term "change" at every political corner. Change,
evolution, is vital to an economy as well as to the field of
arts. Have you listened to the top songs on the radio
recently. Has the previous monopoly of rap songs run its
course? Clearly, there is and always will be rap but
it appears that dance music is on the road to
recovery.
Is Sexy back? Is Dance music returning? Last year some of the
top artists included Justin Timberlake, Rhianna,
Timberland, Carrie Underwood, and Nelly Fatado. More recently,
NeYo released a dance tune that rocketed up the
charts, landing on the penthouse level.
"Closer," has a great dance beat,
fusing R& B with a gritty euro dance
beat. Other R&B singers like Chris Brown
(nominated Artist of the Year) along with the younger
generation of performers have been testing the waters of dance music
with great success. Danity Kane, The Pussy Cat Dolls, Snoop
Dog, Kanya West, Jessie McCartney, Girliousious,
Will.I.AM, John Legend, Christina Agulara, Robin
Thicke and Jordan Sparks. These young artists are achieving
success with the dance beats. Throw in some seasoned veterans
like Madonna, New Kids On the Block and - you now have a full
spectrum of performers embracing dance music.
Some have incorporated a touch of
rap but the core of the songs have the heart
and soul of true dance tunes. With the on slaught and
popularity of dance television shows, could the artists be trying to
accommodate the interest level of partnership
dancing? Is dance music, that you can touch dance
too, making a serious come back? Artists are driven by the
clubs and listeners reaction. With so many dance
songs now getting recognition, its not surprising that other artists
will replicate this successful formula.
It appears that the Euro disco sound has had a major impact on
many artists. As this new breed of singers and
bands continue to test the waters and hit the bulls eye, we
can only hope we are on the ground level of a dance music
revolution.
