Thanksgiving

To wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, I thought I'd share some of my favorite gratitude quotes with you.

Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. ---- Marcel Proust

Do not complain that there are thorns on roses. Be thankful there are roses on thorns. ---- Henry Ward Beecher

I thank God more for friends than for my daily bread- for friendship is the bread of my heart. ---- Mary Mitford

Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a gift and not giving it. ---- John Greenleaf Whittier

Gratitude is the memory of the heart. ---- Jean Baptiste Massieu

It reminds me that another year has come full circle. What harvest have we reaped this past year?
Our lives are cyclical too. We can look at mini beginnings and endings.
We can ask ourselves, "what have we completed?, what is done?, what is over?"

By truly experiencing and savoring the fruits of our labor,
we're able to let go of that which no longer serves us.
Just as the mighty oak tree naturally lets go of its leaves,
we can let go of our own "leaves" to make room for our new blossoms.

My thoughts are turning to the power and courage of letting go:

--- To let go is not to deny, but to accept.

--- To let go is not to regret the past, but to grow and live fully in the present.

--- To let go is to fear less and to love more.

My very best wishes to you, as ever,
Dr. Duffy

Change is inevitable except from vending machines. - Author Unknown

Change is in the air.  It's Spring!  A welcome change for two reasons.  One: it's positive and two: it's known. We know what Spring is.  We know what to expect.
What about change, elected change... that we deem positive.  Yet it's unknown.   And what if it's also hard?
We may have a goal... a desire.  A different career... a more interesting circle of friends..  a different location... even a more fit body. But it's unfamiliar. It puts us out of our comfort zone.
We human beings like to be comfortable.  It's called homeostasis- a good thing.  But we don't have to be comfort junkies.
The question is: What change is worth all the discomfort (and even the anxiety) that goes along with it?  You are the only one to determine that.
The truth is you can have so much more of what you want... if you go for it.  Many people think they can't do something.  Not true.  It's really that they don't believe they can tolerate the consequent discomfort.
You're probably a lot stronger than you think you are.
Imagine yourself just accepting discomfort... letting it wash over you... and breathing in all the wonderful new possibilities that are at your fingertips.
To paraphrase Reinhold Neibuhr, "It is the wisdom to know the difference that makes all the difference".
I wish you many delicious changes.
Happy Spring!

"Self-acceptance is my refusal to be in an adversarial relationship with myself." - Nathaniel Branden

Self acceptance is crucial for dancers... especially dancing students. For how can we allow ourselves to learn unless we accept our mistakes? How many of us get mad at ourselves when we make mistakes? For many, learning new dance steps is an act of courage. It puts us right smack onto our growing edge. And that edge can be very scary.

To be an optimal student of dance I must accept all of who I am: my body as it is in the moment, my sense of rhythm, my degree of agility and flexibility and literally take those small steps for my growth... not only as a dancer but as a person.
