Hott new Dance CD

Dance Music is alive and well. Many new fresh beats have been released that are sure to keep your heart pounding and your feet banging to the beat. With fewer radio stations dedicated to the sounds of new dance music, many of these releases don't get their fair share of air time. Sirus Radio is stepping up and just released a hot new CD featuring 15 of these songs. "The Beat" packs in the hott sounds of summer 2005. These are the biggest dance mixes that can be herad on Satalite radio.
If your not getting your daily dose of new tunes....here is the cure.
This dance mix kicks off with the newest release by Reina entitled "Forgive".
DHT has a remake of the hit, "Listen To Your Heart". A few of  the biggest hits on WKTU are Kim Sozzi "Stay,"  "Put Em High" by Stonebridge, "One Word" by Kelly Osbourne and a personal favorite "Free Me" by Emma Bunton. The music is uplifting with an average pace of about 135 beats per minute. Each songs is carefully mixed for continous non stop dance action. Released nationally, "The Beat" , can be found locally or call or write  the Music Factory in Sewell, NJ (856) 589-5009 email them at

Discoamerica - Highlights & Results

Dancers from all over the country descended on Atlantic City, New Jersey for the 7th annual Discoamerica Championships. One of the longest running hustle dance events, this years convention marked the first time an event of this kind danced into America's playground. One of the most visited cities in the country, AC has so much to offer. The Sheraton Hotel was the setting for this years competition. Best known as the home of the Miss America Pageant, the hotel displays many of the artifacts  and memorabilia from the pageants birth to today. The setting couldn't have been better. Organizer Donna Boyle, along with her DJs and teaching staff kept the event in a nonstop dance mode all weekend long.
This years event revealed the increased level of competitors in the amateur ranks. Entries have grown as the skill level among the amateurs continues to wow the audience. Whether you won a dance contest, hit at one of the casino's or took in a show....everyone was a winner. This years diner show was choreographed by Artie Philips as he displayed his interpretation of the Discoamerica Beauty Pageant with a few twists of his own. In addition to the staff...many pros were on hand:
Joyce Szilli, Luis & Mary Rosa, Chuck Fetta, Laura Cozik, Lori Brizzi, Steven Mitchell, DJ Mark, Nelli Cotta, DJ Nino Torre, Paul Pelicora, Lisa Daniels, Kenny Gonzalez....
Hats off to Donna for keeping disco alive in Atlantic City and the burbs.

  Letters to the Editor
(send all letters to Rowenlb22@aol.com)

Hi Ron,
Just wanted to let you know that my dad is recovering very well. He is looking good, has gotten his appetite back - is very clear and getting stronger every day.  With all my heart, thank the well-wishers from all over the world on behalf of my dad and my family, who took the time to call us and to write to him - both emails and cards - and who kept him in their thoughts and prayers.  I made a nice book and have read each and every email and card to him and I swear this has helped him keep up good spirits; and had definitely made his recovery that much smoother.  So much love was and is still being sent to him - I just cannot express how grateful we are.
Eileen Montana - on behald of Vince Montana Jr.

 Dear Ron,
I wanted to convey my sincere thanks to you and all the dancers who have come out to Michael's Cafe the past few weeks. I greatly appreciate their support and willingness to help. I hope everyone's support and generosity will encourage management to allow our Tuesday Night Hustle Dance Party to continue for a long, long time. I also wanted to convey a special thank you to the professional instructors and advanced dancers who offered their time and efforts for the Pro Mixer hour this past Tuesday.  Again, my sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone for their support. They are the best, not only as dancers, but as caring, generous and kind hearted people.
DJ Mark

.................................................................................

Dear Ron,
Without a doubt, my favorite dance songs are those that bring a flood of sweet moments that mark my life as a "Disco Diva." "Souvenirs" by Voyage takes the number 3 spot. I grew up as a "bookworm" academic in Brooklyn, NY, sans any trace of a social life. When I moved from my parents' nest to Los Angeles in 1977, disco music helped me transition from "bookworm" to "butterfly." "Souvenirs" was playing when I took my first dance lesson, and again when I entered my first dance contest....AND WON! I met my husband-to-be at Osco's Disco in LA. I had seen him before and finally got the nerve to ask him to dance. He said no (how dare he?), saying "you're too good a dancer-give me two more weeks." I replied that I was getting married next week [NOT], so this was his last chance. We danced to the strains of "Love is the Ultimate" by Ultimate. Needless to say, we met again next week and when he asked about my wedding, without missing a beat, I replied, "Oh, that! I called it off." Love is truly the ultimate...married 20 years & still dancing! In 1994 my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and I became her caregiver. Although a devastating tragedy, I soon learned that mom loved disco music as much as I. Her favorite song to sing? "You'll Never Know How Much I Love You" by Love & Kisses. She knew all the words and as the disease progressed, and I was reduced to a friendly, smiling stranger, she never forgot those words. As I write this, my eyes fill with tears of joy as I still hear her sweet voice singing, You'll never know how much, how much, how much, how much, how much!!" Mom died in 1999, we played the song at her memorial, and I treasure this moment above all others. Thank you for letting me share my Happy Disco Moments!
Sincerely, Gloria Lo Pinto Juat

Hi Ron,

There are so many great dance songs from back in the day, that it's hard to choose only three.  However, the titles below are songs that I consistently love because:
The melody is lyrical and musical and flows with a perfect, not too fast, not too slow, tempo (I can dance all three, in a row, and come off the dance floor still able to breathe, with my hair in tact)
The lyrics are poetic and I'm a real romantic
And the most important reason... I just want to dance whenever I hear them!
Footsteps Following Me
Close to Perfection
Under Your Spell

Take care,
Susan Hiser
............................
I want this collection so I've dug deep into my "Dance Classic" memory & came up with these 3 songs and why they are my favorites.
3-I Found Love by Love & Kisses
A disco classic that has become a wedding ceremony theme song. I Found Love was a chosen song for many dance routines & I have been lucky enough to see many great performers do their routine to this classic.
2-Romeo & Juliet by Alec Constindinos
No matter what time of the night this song played in your favorite nightclub & no matter how packed your dance floor already was, all hustle dancers would try to cram on the floor to hustle to this classic.
1-The Hustle by Van McCoy
This is the song that started it all. Without this song, "the hustle" (dance), as we all know it, could have & might have been named something else.

Hi Ron: Wow, you are going to make us work for the CD set. What a challenge you are presenting as it is almost impossible to narrow down to 3 songs from 70 & 80. Nevertheless, here are my picks:
Love Is The Message “ TSOP/1973

Back in 1973 (Phila) Gamble-Huff cleverly and uniquely brewed up a formula that created and set the foundation to what later become the standard for the disco beat. This song is considered œThe Mother of All Disco? and I agree.  I love that it begins as a low key R&B and slowly shifts to a smooth, polished, sleek and groovy deep jazzy melody flavored with style and sophistication. It not too R&B and not too funky, its just right “ perfecto! Disco was born and I was hooked.
Make That Feeling Come Again “ Beautiful Bend/1978 (Boris Midney) Although the entire LP is a masterpiece œMake That Feeling Come Again? stands out.  I consider this œsmart disco? because it is conceptual and it appeals to those œthinking listeners?.  When I first heard this record, it was played in its entirety, and I couldn't get myself to dance, because it was so different “ I just wanted to listen and I couldn't believe what I was hearing.  I was totally flabbergasted and amazed.  The next day I ran to the record shop and purchased two copies of the LP.  I couldn't really compare it to anything else I've previously heard but it had a similar feel to El Coco Cocomotion in that it contain that shift in mood and pace transcending listener into a romantic melodramatic multilayered rhythmic journey. Ooh, what ecstasy! Undoubtedly, straightforward bona-fide hustle dance music. Its a disco opera, its an epic.  Boris Midney œBeautifully Bend? disco music and heighten it to a level of superiority “ This is Disco at its finest. Outstanding!
Problemes d™ Amour “ Alexander Robotnick (Fuzz Dance LP) 1985
By the mid-80 dance music was rapidly evolving and had gone through a lot of changes in style and beats.  There was euro-beat, hi-Nrg, nu-wave, freestyle, electric-funk hip-hop, be bop and much more. Problemes d™ Amour took a little piece of all these styles and blended them all into one. This song was unique and what I loved most was that a dancer could hustle to it.  At the time, people were getting away from the hustle dancing and more into freestyle type dancing. Nevertheless, I was elated because we could still stamp our way to the dance floor.  Because the lyrics were in French, I didn't know what the song was about - neither did anyone else.  I thought it sounded kind of sad in undertone however the groove was uplifting and current with the vibe of the time.  Still today, this classic remains on my play list. Ron, thanks for keeping the boogie alive and making it fun for your readers - Keep it coming! Cheers,
Marisol D.

           Letters to the Editor
Dear Friends and Family,
It is with great joy to be writing you today.  This will be my last email news regarding disco.
Only a few of you know the real story behind me.  Many of you have read some interviews on my website or watched me in a disco documentary.
The fact is ? I have been fighting from within and keeping back part of my life  which I feel all of you need to know now.
My life was changed dramatically back in 1980.  Which was the actual death of disco to me.  You can read about for awhile on my site in the form of a Voice Magazine testimonial.  http://www.discostepbystep.com/ma_testimony.htm. I hope it maybe an inspiration to you or someone you know.  Please feel to share it.
Some of you have asked what I've done since that time frame - 1980-2005.  The article will bring you up to date to about 1987.   I didn't have any involvement in disco after 1980.  Since 1987 I began working for a drug treatment center in Florida call The Drug Abuse Foundation.  This tremendous organization continues to help thousands of people with substance abuse problems.  I began to have a feeling of hypocriticalness because I was trying to help people and many of them did not really want help.  But my father became seriously ill and he needed my help so I resigned my position and began a faith journey which I wasn't sure where it would end up.
During my time helping my dad I started tinkering with the Internet and met Bernie Lopez, founder of the great Discomusic.com.   He encouraged me to start a disco website and actually .. the rest is history.  The birth of Disco Step-by-Step.com began.
By doing this project I was actually being drawn back into my past? which truthfully wasn't the greatest of times.  But I persuaded it anyway to keep busy making sure my dad's needs were met.  He passed away seven years ago.  Then ? my mom needed my help so I continued taking care of her.  And also keep my mind busy with the disco website.  My mom passed away in Jan. 2004.
Why I am sharing this all with you is so you will have a better grasp of why I am announcing my further dis-involvement in disco and dance.
God saved me from a life that was empty, unhappy and useless in 1980.  It is now 2005 and I find again I am almost in the same situation.  No vision!  Empty!  But I've asked God to re-open the doors he opened for me in 1980 so that He would restore my victory, happiness and peace.
I can no longer involve myself in the day to day workings of disco.  Disco NEVER brought me happiness .. maybe momentary .. but it truly was a false negative sense of self worth.
So .. I am moving forward asking for God's guidance and direction for my life.  I've completed a soon to be published book and will actively promote it.  It is a self-help encouragement work which has taken over 25 years to complete.
Thank you all for your wonderful comments, emails, photos and meetings.  May God bless you and never take his shinny light from your life.
I am sorry for keeping my past a secret to most of you.  But the "PRESENT" ? the "NOW" is too important to me and where I need to be living my life.  Doing and staying current.
The website will remain on line for another two weeks and then will be donated in its entirety to the U. S. Library of Congress.   Whatever happens to it then ? is not for me to say.  The L.O.C. is a good keep of  history and hopefully it will remain in the same state it was in when donated ... including the various Halls of Fame.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart? and thank you for your supporting understanding.
Marty Angelo

This weeks issue of DanceTalk is sponsored by Passport Entertainment, as we celebrate the release of Disco: Spinning the Story. As a fan and historian of the disco era, I'm proud to say, this is a  wonderful presentation. The feature doesn't get bottled necked in Studio 54. The producers see thru the clutter revealing the positive message from the disco generation. They felt the pulse of disco and deliver the right story. See my review below.  www.passportproductions.com

Make it a great week,
Ron

Disco: Spinning the Story - Review

For years, the disco era was labeled with negativity. Finally, a true, accurate portrayal has emerged via "Disco: Spinning the Story". Clearly the disco era was not limited to sex, drugs and Studio 54. The overwhelming majority of disco warriors brought a positive energy that is revealed in this DVD. The documentary takes an indepth look at the industry, the music and the people that made this such an overwhelming success. What sets this apart from other disco documentaries is the inclusion and the  importance of the dance. Your experience rare footage from movies, television shows, vintage performances, interviews and popular shows including Bandstand and Marty Angelo's Disco Step By Step. Narrated by the queen of Disco, Gloria Gaynor, she takes us on a historical adventure thru the roots of discoville. The graphics and quality photography are captivating. The birth of disco is discussed as the climate in our nation was changing - leaving the Vietnam 60's for a happier time where folks yearned to get dressed up and touch dance to a new rhythm.
Early footage shows the impact that James Brown and Sly and the Family Stone had on the music. Their funky sound shook the dance floor and set the stage for the four on the floor disco bass beat.  The funk was smoothed out with new grooves to transcend into harmonious releases by artists like George McCrae and the Hues Corporation.  Many notable artists and disco stars share their memories of this decade including members of the Village People, Earl Young of the Trammps, Thelma Houston, Karen Lynn Gormley, Marty Angelo, Georgio Moroder, Kurtis Blow, Tom Moulton.....
During the mid 70's, the early disco sound was lead by Gloria Gaynor, Van McCoy and KC & the Sunshine Band. Your see the fashions, the artists and the DJs in their booths creating the magic of the night. Clips from the original television Show "Disco Step By Step" display the infancy of the hustle dance as teachers show you the early steps. The movie takes you thru the evolution of the music as disco goes from the underground clubs to mainstream - enjoying international fame. The release of the motion picture "Saturday Night Fever" launched disco into the upper hemisphere. The music continued to grow as Donna Summer, Bee Gees and Chic take us to the top of their game. Not leaving out the dark side....the Chicago Stadium that held the Disco back lash is covered along with the stars that attended the infamous Studio 54 for dancing, parting and some high jinx. But "Disco" shows the up side and positive effects from the era. Many rock musicians jumped on board to take a stab at this popular disco beat. Your get the opportunity to see how the records were created and mixed in the studio. The movie is very informative and takes a comprehensive approach in just 90 minutes of run time.
Winding up the era, the abundance of commercialized (watered down products)  burden the industry and shifted the interest level towards punk and rap. The word 'disco' developed a bad connotation and  eventually was replaced with the broader term 'dance music'.
Like Gloria Gaynor sang, "I will Survive" and so will the music and dance of this important era.
The music documentary is a must for all those inspired by this era. It clears up the fallacy's of disco and focuses on the positives. Also included in the DVD is a bonus feature - live, on stage, performances by Gaynor singing "I will Survive" in 1979 and "Never Can Say Goodbye" in 1974. Whether you lived thru the era or not your want to see and hear the music and life style that defined this generation.
The DVD "Disco: Spinning The Story" will be available on June 7, 2005 wherever DVD's are sold.  www.passportproductions.com

...........Ricky Quintana and Lee Rofrano would add a page to that book and introduce classic adagio moves including: over head lifts, the back roll down and the magical snake maneuver. Her nude-style costume had the Dance Fever television staff biting their nails?  They had her do a special dress rehearse before taping the hit show.  "They were afraid something might pop out," a laughing Lee reminisce. Ultimately, they would win the first round and go onto the "Dance Fever" semi - finals............

By the age of 14 Susan partnered with Tony Marolda. The chemistry was magical. In 1976 they became the USBC Amateur ballroom champions. The following year they captured the Untied States Amateur Hustle championship. Their training and hard work was paying off. In 1978 they won New York's crown jewel, the prestigious "Harvest Moonball" All around title, held at the Felt Forum in Madison Square Garden.................

The 2002 DanceTalk® Readers Choice Winners
Favorite DJ - Mr. Bobby Morales
Favorite Female Dancer -  Debbie Ferro
Favorite Male Dancer - Donnie Shields
Favorite Dance Couple - Brian & Silvana Gallagher
Favorite Dance Couple (not hustle) -
   Robert Royston & Laureen Baldovi
Favorite Female Instructor - Diane Nardone
Favorite Male Instructor - Arte Phillips

......The partnership clicked and Debbie Ferro & Perico were making things happen.
Together they won an all expense paid, nine day trip to Brazil to compete in an international competiton..They won the prestigious televised "South American Dance Championships" held in Venezuela. Back in the states, Perico established an alliance with Billy Fajardo and the "Disco Dance Dimensions" were underway.
The act took off...........

While producing music for Mericana Records, Ralph Lew (RIP) befriended Vince Montana, Jr.
Vince asked Ralph and his dance company to join him  for what would become the famous launching of  "Vince Montana Jr., The Salsoul Orchestra" at Radio City Music Hall. What an event. Ralph brought along the darlings of Hustle, Floyd and Nelly. Over the years, wonderful teams performed with him including:                        Derrick & Lilia, Billy & Sandra, Ray Bogart & Kathy, Kenny Gonzales, Billy & Annabel,  Ron Bess & Lisa,  Bobby & Lynn, Denise & George and the Latin Symbolics.....................

When an opportunity knocked, Deano Georgio moved to California to join forces with long time friend Lisa Nunziella. He quickly became a screen actor guild member. Together they would embark on a partnership including movies - sitcoms - commercials and videos, that had never been achieved in the hustle:
Dance doubling for Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz in "The Mask,"..............

He loved the television show American Bandstand soooo much,.... he started his own TV dance show. As one of Dick Clark's biggest fans, his mission was to show the world that touch dancing was back. All the dance shows focused on freestyle.
Marty wanted to expose the hustle and the wonderful music that went with it.
Marty Angelo's life began in the 70's, so to speak..................

While recuperating in the hospital her older sister visited her to exclaimed "there is a new dance out" where upon she began to teach her the hot new craze, right there in the hospital. She was only 13 years old. She started studying ballet when she was only 3.  Nelly Cotto hasn't stopped dancing since. For almost 30 years, Nelly has dazzled audiences all over the world. She was destined to become the premier hustle dancer of our time..............

Back in the day, the exciting dancers went to the clubs where the best Disc Jockeys performed their craft. When Disco and hustle dancing were at a national peak, clubs like: Starship, 1018, Studio 54, Paradise Garage and The Loft were the places to be seen. But then, one of the most exciting night clubs of all times emerged.
The Inferno with DJ Rene Hewitt...............

The year was 1972. The motion picture 'God Father' was a box office bonanza, Helen Reddy released her classic song "I am Woman" and a guy from Brooklyn opened a dance studio called "New York Hustle."   Jeff and Donna Shelley helped teach NY to hustle dance...............

His spins were so quick he earned the nick name "White Lightning." But this dynamic dancer would experience a turn in his dance career that wasn't choreographed. George Velazquez was the victim of a horrific automobile accident that took him in a new direction. His will power and determination never diminished as he continues to be a dance inspiration to others..............

Known as the Queen of Disco, she has decades of number one hit songs, but what does the Disco Queen think of the hustle and the dance phenomenon?
"I love dancing, it makes me feel good to see people dancing to my music." reflects Gloria Gaynor. She has done it all, as a singer, performer and  author she describes her love for dancing - "I'm more passionate about dancing then I am of singing. But I'm also very critical. I know good technique and form and what its suppose to look like."

He danced on the original, " American Bandstand Show," hosted by the ageless Dick Clark, in his home town, Philadelphia. Virtually born with a microphone in his hands, Giant Gene Arnold started singing and doing rock n' roll shows in the early 60's. As a young performer he would grow to leave an indelible mark on the music industry.

He was always up beat, always with a smile on his face.
He didn't win the most trophies or claim the most titles but he had the biggest heart on the dance floor. As a gifted dancer, teacher, competitor and friend, he had a fan club as long as your leg.  James "Jimmy" Garcia (RIP) will be missed by thousands......

His dancing was so amazing, he was booked to perform with all the greats:
Sinatra, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, Liza Mineli, Rosemary Clooney, Jan Pierce, Liberace and Dean Martin. His repertoire includes hundreds of lifts (and nearly a dozen with one arm over head). The Szony's did special appearances on the most popular television shows including, The Merv Griffin Show, The Hollywood Palace, Ed Sullivan and The Show of Shows............

........winning the semi finals on the nationally televised "Dance Fever",  Perico was not limiting himself to Hustle.  In 1983 the quintessential Hip Hop movie "Beat Street" emerged starring Harry Belafonte, Perico was cast and put his acting skills to the test. In 1985 he began choreographing for major entertainers (free style) but then took it to a new level when he composed a hit song for Corina. In 1991 he wrote the highest charting free style song  ever recorded, "Temptation" also performed by Corina.  At this time he decided to return to the dance arena, this time staging the club sequence in the hit movie "Carlito's Way".............

In 1979, it was all over the airwaves, WKTU was promoting the biggest dance contest of its kind. Cherry's Discotheque was holding a weekly contest where the grand prize winners would be the owners of brand new Cherry Red Corvettes. Lifts were not permitted. Dancing to "Shine on Silvermoon," Derrick Allen & Lilia drove home in matching new cars.

  Letter from the Editor

Carmen Wright has been dancing for over 25 years and through her dancing has met many wonderful people, some of which have become her extended family. "I consider myself very lucky to have this in my life and fortunate that I am healthy to be able to enjoy such a great and happy sport.  However, I've come to a point in my life that I feel that I need to give something back and help those who are less fortunate", explains Carmen.  To help make a difference, Carmen has made a commitment to support  the "Leukemia and Lymphoma Society".
As a dancer, Carmen supports and attends many of the dance competitions, Discoamerica in Philadelphia, the World Hustle Dance Championships in New Jersey and the IHSC in Miami. "My favorite place to dance,  locally, is Dancesport.
"You know Ron, I've always wanted to do something that makes me feel like I am making a difference somehow and, makes me feel like I was helping others, this is it." Carmen had an awakening of her own when she explored the fight against Leukemia. "These blood-cancers are diseases that can attack at any age, at any time....it was scary to hear and meet people that are fighting this disease.   Even scarier to know that when it happens, it's usually without a hint, clue or a sign that you are about to be struck down with this."
On Sunday, October 23, 2005, Carmen will be walking in the Nike Women's Marathon (26.2 miles) to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program and on behalf of her co-worker Mr. Phil Kayne and the many others that are fighting this disease.  She will be participating in this event as a symbol of endurance and hope to raise funds for all blood-related cancer research, education and patient services. All donations should be mailed directly to her. (There's a form that she turns in with all donations.) at: 45 Rodak Circle, Edison, New Jersey 08817 and, checks should be made payable to "Leukemia and Lymphoma Society".
Sadly, there are more than 617,000 people in the United States who are fighting blood cancers-leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma-and although research is responsible for increasing survival rates for these diseases, the battle if far from over.  Every five minutes, someone in this country is diagnosed with blood cancer.  Every nine minutes, someone dies. Carmen is honored to be walking for such a great a cause in hopes that one day, we will find a cure.
"I am confident that we can win the battle against blood-related cancers and give those living with cancer and their families hope for the future."  A contribution in any amount will bring the Society "one step closer to a cure."  Here is a very poignant quote that Carmen saw displayed on a billboard near Ground Zero on September 11, 2002.  "The human spirit is not measured by the size of the act, but by the size of the heart." Hats off to Carmen, lets get behind this important cause.

Ron, I feel the Hustle Dance World owes a debt of gratitude to Miguel Marrero for stepping up to the plate and with very short notice made it to the Tribecca Film Festival last Saturday.
When I found out about this event and learned Tribecca was going to have a "Saturday Night Fever" night with dancers, I immediately got a hold of one of the producers and asked if the dancers were hustle dancers.  I think the gal I spoke to wasn't even born when the movie first hit so her thoughts were not on getting hustle dancers there but just dancers.  I informed her the movie was all about "hustle dancing" and if I could round up some dancers I would try to get them there.  Well ... we had a couple of days to get it together and the only one who could make it was Miguel Marrero.  He did not have his regular partner with him but took one of his students ... and made it to the event. According to Miguel .. he was the only one who knew how to hustle.   Can you believe it?  All "Saturday Night Fever" is about ... is the Hustle .. besides the silly but somewhat true story line.  When people think of "Saturday Night Fever" ... they think HUSTLE!! Miguel even took time to work with some of the younger dancers who were there and even got to do a Spot Light feature ... with just him and his partner.  I cannot commend him enough for his "true spirit" attitude... and with such short notice! The Hustle was alive and well at the Tribecca Film Festival ... which had a lot of press coverage.  We all lucked out by Miguel's loyalty to the dance.  If you check out the photos at this site:   http://www.pbase.com/dme_nyc/tribecasatnightfever you will see for yourself that the only ones Hustle dancing were Miguel and his partner.  I am not sure what the others were doing... but it certainly was not the Hustle!!!

Hi Ron,
I was just notified that I got a 3 week assignment to assess the situation as it developed over the weekend.  Another hostage situation with an Australian this time.  The Italians are contesting the findings of the shooting of a freed hostage that wounded one and killed her bodyguard.  Zarquawi threatens the white house and the Vatican.  There were 6 car bombs that went off today.  Just in 2 F-18 fighter jets collide in mid air over Iraq.  This is only Monday.
I told some people I was going to be retired but in lieu of recent circumstances I will be on assignment for 3 weeks.  Most likely Willow Grove, possibly Harrisburg.  I will be back next month God willing and I hope to be dancing again soon.
Technically I won't be officially discharged until 9-12-05.  You remember it was 911 that got me reactivated 4 years ago in Texas.  Has it been that long already?  You have been a good friend in the beginning, in the middle and hopefully at the end of this ordeal.
Please tell all of my friends that I will be missing them and I hope to see them soon.   I will always be available when my country needs me, I took an oath that has no expiration date.
As always, thanks for being the link to my alternate life.  Even though Intel analysis is what I do I will always be a dancer in my heart.

Time Capsule

In 1957, the musical, West Side Story opened on Broadway. Composed by Leonard Bernstein, the award winning show was adapted for the silver screen in 1968. Both the music and dancing were thrilling.  The motion picture won 10 Academy awards. The musical score was nominated for both a Grammy and Oscar award. Ten years later, musical genius Vince Montana Jr. would adopt this score and head to the sound studio. The results were incredible. He created a contemporary dance version of West Side Story.
Twenty-seven years ago, the world was treated, as the classical sound merged with the disco beat. Many of the top songs on the dance charts combined a bass drum with an orchestrial sound that would make your parents proud. This sophisticated sound became very popular.  Many of the classic songs of the day were instrumentals combining strong rhythm, brass and strings. The symphonic sound wove a chilling tune that had folks running towards the dance floor.  The European sound had conquered our borders and was embraced by the premier disc jockeys. Some of the songs were mixed and remixed for extra long dance play. The country was in love with the disco beat.
It wasn't unusual for a hot song to spin for 20 minutes or more. At the top of the Billboards Disco Action chart in 1978 was the incredible Westside Story.  Giving the music new life, Montana recreated an incredible medley. This new sound was designed for the dance floor: Maria, Tonight, There's a Place for us,..... The composition was awesome.
The top songs had a rich, full sound. Wonderful composers like Alec R Constindinos, Boris Midney, John Davis, Cerrone, Greg Diamond, Meco, Silvetti, Giorgio Moroder, MFSB..... brought an orchestrial sound to dance music that lasted, for only a couple of years.
Here are the top songs from April of 1978. The music was magical...true classics.

* West Side Story - Vince Montana Jr., the Salsoul Orchestra
* Voyage - Voyage
* Come Into My Heart - USA - European Connection
* I Can't Stand The Rain - Eruption
* I Love NY - Metropolis
* Romeo & Juliet - Alec R. Constindinos
* Dance Little Dreamer - Bionic Boogie
* If My Friends Could See Me Now - Linda Clifford
* Rio De Janeiro - Gary Criss
* Seven Deadly Sins - Rinder & Lewis
* Galaxy - War
* Let's All Chant - Michael Zager Band

Editorial
We Most Save the Hustle

Philadelphia is no different then most other cities, there are hot trends that ratchet one style of music, fashion or dance to the top.... at the expense of something getting pushed down. Like the seasons, when one element dominates the other takes a back seat. Over the years, many of the clubs and popular dance spots all over the country have gone by the way side. In some cites, dance clubs are scarce.
Sales drive any business. At one time, the disco beat or a dance contest could pack the house. Today, that just doesn't hold. It has been an uphill battle for the hustle.  The declining number of dancers attending the Tuesday night hustle party at Michael's Cafe in Bensalem Pa. has put the future on hold.
Lets face it, the club owner or management isn't really interested in who's the best dancer. It's all about ringing the cash register.
The last few weeks has seen a reduction in the attendance at Michael's Cafe.
This has a direct impact on beverages sold at the bar.
DJ Mark, has been informed that if the numbers don't pick up, the management will pull the plug on the Tuesday night dance party.
This is a wake up call to the entire dance community...on a broader sense.
If you don't Go they may Close. If you don't support the studios, the social parties or dance conventions.....they will go away. Please attend the dances in your area.
If you are from the Philly/NJ area, come out on Tuesday nights, dance, buy a drink and keep the party alive at Michael's Cafe.
Please encourage all your friends to support the local and national dance events   ....before its to late.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Ron,  Thanks for including me in your DanceTalk bulletin.  It helps me keep up with you all back home. It is getting hot out here in Iraq already,  80-90 degrees during the day, 65 degrees at night. I have about another 7 months left of this tour.
I am refueling helicopters as part of my mission. Right now I am working at night,  with no lights.  It is exciting and a little bit dangerous. We always keep safety first in mind. I am inside the wire so I am not in harms way as much as the guys and gals that go outside the wire on a daily basis.
Thanks for your prayers, we all need them out here.
God Bless you all and thanks for being there.

The Queen Of Dance (winner)

Last week we featured the story, The Queen of Dance. We had 41 of the top Disc Jockey's around the country cast their votes. These are the music masters that spin  on the radio, play at the top clubs and are bombarded with song requests. We felt there was no one better to poll then the DJ''s that played during the disco era.
The votes have been tallied. It narrowed down to a two horse race. Each a queen in their own right, but, the top vote getter and first place honors go to New Jersey's own Gloria Gaynor . Congratulations to Gloria, she continues to sing and perform all over the world. We are proud to recognize her as The Queen Of Dance, selected by the people that drove the music.  In this close race, the second place winner was the incomparable Donna Summer.
Thanks to all the DJs that voted and sharing their thoughts with our readers.

Dance Movie Classics

Looking to cuddle up and watch a good classic. Here is a selection of popular dance movies that extends back to the golden age of dance. Each of these motion pictures made a statement - at the time of their theatrical release. Many set new music, fashion and cultural trends. If you can't get out and dance....then buy or rent one of these.

Top Hat - 1935 - Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers - a real classic rated in the top 100 pictures of all time.

Singin' In The Rain - 1952  Gene Kelly at his best. Ranked in the top 20 pictures of all time.

West Side Story - 1968  Superb from start to finish, the cast and musical score are incredible. Won best picture of the year. Natalie Wood stars.

Roseland   - 1976 - Christopher Walkins debuts. A dark side of a dance studio and  the business. Features a disco dance contest.

Saturday Night Fever - 1977 - John Travolta rules the clubs and delivers a style  that lasted for years. Ranked in the top 100 movies of all time. Top selling sound track.

Flash Dance - 1981 - hip hop & jazz with a great Giorgio Moroder soundtrack. Jennifer Beals becomes a star.

Footloose - 1981 - Kevin Bacon plays a rebel that teaches the town to free style dance, against the wishes of the town folks.

Dirty Dancing - 1987 - Patrick Swayze struts his stuff and breaks women's hearts. Awesome sound track and exciting dancing.

Strictly Ballroom - 1992 - a young ballroom dance champion defies convention and uses new dance moves that pleases the crowd but angers the traditional dancers.

Shall We Dance - 1996 (Original Japanese release)

Dance with Me (1998) - Plot revolves around a ballroom competition. Stars Vanessa Williams also features Maria Torres.

Burn the Floor   - 2000 - This helped create the Salsa momentum in the US and abroad. Exciting Latin dancing.

Dirty Dancing - (Havana Nights) - 2004 - More of a remake then a sequel. Lacks the excitement of the original.

Shall We Dance -  2004 - Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez star. Entertaining but lacks the pizzazz of many of the earlier movies.

Letters to the Editor

I was so surprised to hear someone write about Le Jardin. That was the first club of it's kind leading to the other greats like Infinity, Studio 54 & Xenons.  It was where I learned to Hustle in 1973.  That was a decade like no other. I remember Nicky was one of the great DJs of that time.  He inspired DJ Billy Carroll, who now travels the world, working as a DJ & is probably one of the top 10 DJs in the gay community of clubs.  Cheers to Nicky for being one of the greats who allowed me some of my best memories of dance.
Robin
........
I'd like to thank everyone who honored me by celebrating my birthday.  I want to give special thanks to Sara, Mimi, Mike and Bruce for the cake.  It's yummy! Thanks to DJ Mark for pulling off three birthday dances and keeping the dance floor going all night.  I also want to thank everyone for their cards and gifts. Once again I was given a memorable night to cherish for years to come.  I truly treasure my birthday dance and want to thank everyone who participated.  For those of you who weren't quite comfortable doing it, I hope that next year you'll give it a try.  No man could be more blessed than I for having been given this extraordinary gift of dancing.  The greatest gift of all, however, is each one of you and what you bring to my life.  I look forward to many more dances with each one of you.

Singer / actor Antonio Banderas is to play the part of Pierre Dulaine in the motion picture "Take the Lead".  The film begins shooting next month in Toronto. Banderas plays a former pro dancer who teaches dance in the NY public schools. Based on Dulaine's work, the film details the results when his ballroom teaching goes up against the students' favorite hip-hop moves and the two team up together. Pierre along with Yvonne Marcier are former Blackpool champions.

I hope you enjoy this weeks feature on the Queen Of Disco . We had 41 legendary DJs respond to this question - who deserves to wear the crown. Below are some of the responses. Next week I will post the winner based on the results of our panel.

The Queen Of Disco

Who was the real Queen of Dance Music?
The right music made you want to dance.... all night long.
Years gone by, you could hear a song on the radio and immediately say "I've got to dance to that." That is the power of a real dance music superstar. Over the years there have been many divas in the dance genre.  Gloria Gaynor kicked it off early then was quickly followed by Vicki Sue Robinson and her classic hit Turn The Beat Around. Then things got turned upside down when the sultry song Love To Love You Baby hit the air waves. Donna Summer kept guard for the next few years. Madonna captured the mid 80 thru the 90's but we can't forget the contributions of Diana Ross, Carol Douglas, Grace Jones, Carol Williams, Andre True, Chaka Khan, Loleata Holloway, Laura Branigan, Cher...
So then, who was the real Queen of the dance age?
Who better to ask then the DJs that played their music day in and all night long.
Thank you to all the music professionals for their insight.
We had 41DJ's respond with their votes.
Next week, I will post the "Queen Of Dance" as selected by our DJ panel.
Here are some of their responses
.......................

The Queen of Disco ..... Gloria Gaynor .... hands down ... she still is selling dance music ... big time.  we haven't heard much from any of the others .. such as Donna Summer .... Gaynor is Queen .... she was the first ... and still is in my book!!!
Marty Angelo - Florida
.......................

France Joli is someone I™d like to hand the title to.  She was a teen star during the Disco era, back when most of us were teenagers.  She had disco smashes like Come to Me, Feel Like Dancing/The Heart to Break the Heart and Gonna Get Over You.... However, her list of hits is not extensive enough and she didn™t have the staying power to rightfully earn the title. Madonna on the other hand has sold more dance records than any other female artist in history.  Her hit list is extensive and she continues to pump out Dance Music today.... However, if we™re linking The Queen of Dance Music to our dance Hustle and the Disco Era, then my only reservation is that Madonna™s first big hit wasn™t until 1982. So, Gloria Gaynor wins my nomination as the Queen of Dance Music. Gloria certainly has an extensive hit list which spans the decades and she continues to turn out dance music today.  Gloria Gaynor, no surprise, has my vote as the Queen of Dance Music.
Dave Lach - Michigan
.......................

I think Donna Summer would have to be on my top of the list. I think back in her time everyone followed her lead. But then came along Madonna who I think is one of the more talented all around female artists when it comes to dance, and is still going strong. There are quite a few more I could name, but I think I would have to go with Madonna, just for her pure innovative way that she attacks her music.
Johnny V - Long Island, NY

.......................

The Queen Of Disco would have to be the lady with the staying power. Some of my personal favorites would include Madleen Kane (Forbidden Love & Rough Diamond), Vicki Sue Robinson ( Turn the Beat Around & Too Sir With Love), Carol Douglas ( Midnight Love Affair & Dr.s Orders) but the one who hit the top and stayed there the longest had to be Donna Summer...... She wore the crown the longest.
Regards,
DJ Ted "Tex" Lawrence - Detroit
.......................

I would have to vote for Donna Summer.  She has survived the test of time. Her musical selections displayed a true sense of versatility and talent. No matter what crowd I am playing for, I am always able to play a Donna Summer song.....
DJ  Mark Routzahn - Philly
.......................

Who Is The Queen of Disco?  That's a subjective question, like asking who was the best football player, but from my perspective I would say Gloria Gaynor.  Way before she released "I Will Survive", she was already considered by many to the The Queen as her hits "Honeybee" and "Never Can Say Goodbye" were universal dance club anthems.  Her live performance schedule was incredible and she sounded just as amazing in person as on "wax", which you couldn't say for every other artist.  I witnessed Loleatta Holoway bring a crowd to a five-minute standing ovation, I also have a fond spot in my heart for Donna Summer (since I was given one of her gold records), plus the longevity that both Madonna and Cher achieved is remarkable and can't be overlooked, but I still cast my vote for the one and only Queen, Gloria Gaynor.
Regards,
Jackie McCloy
Director - Long Island Record Pool
.......................

Ron looking back on the disco days and the ladies that made the biggest contributions I would have to say the real queen of dance music has to be Donna Summers. Though she was not my personal favorite she helped build the disco business to spread across the country. AS a responsible disc jockey you had to play her music every night.  I feel it is important  to honor the other queens like Gloria Estefan and Loleata holloway and Carol Jiani, Martha Wash and Melba moore.
I loved working the turntables and spinning and mixing this great music. It was uplifting and full of fun and energy. The sound today is bland and empty........
To reach the popularity it once was it will take another person like a Donna Summer to improve the music of the day.
Carmen Perez - Los Angeles
.......................

If have to choose one ...... Donna Summer for sure.
But in fact there are / were much more and better than those ?! :-)
DJ Yahu - Poland
.......................

When i played at le jardin, and gloria gaynor was crowned queen of dance music sometime in 1974, i was not thrilled....but looking back on gloria's career, HONEYBEE, which was a single on COLUMBIA records was out in 1972, long before anyone else had come along...and honeybee on 45 (the records with the big wholes) was a huge hit...but the queen who was releasing dance orientated records even before the disco had come along was ROSS....even with the impressive career of donna summer...NO ONE HAS HAD AS MANY DANCE FLOOR HITS IN THE SEVENTIES THEN ROSS...from the first tune i remember dancing to at the firehouse in 1970 SURRENDER, to NO ONE GETS THE PRIZE...and LOVE HANGOVER...but then again, i never considered ROSS A "DANCE ARTIST"  I CONSIDERED HER A POP IDOL...so, who are we to judge the ultimate queen....one thing i do know, of all these women, the one whose records i reach for the LEAST, whenever i play a classics night, is unfortunately, SUMMER....her songs are so DISCOFIED, they grate my nerves....
Nicky Siano - NY

.......................

We had many "Divas of Dance" in the 70's (does any other decade really count?!?) but only 2 can be considered "Queen", Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor. They were the first female superstars  to specialize in the genre. They both burst onto the scene in '75. Gloria's "Never can say goodbye" album hit first. It was also the first "Mixed" album. Donna's "Love to love you baby" was the most erotic dance song to date and at 16 minutes the longest. Their list of follow up hits reads like a hall of fame of dance music and their staying power throughout the decade is what separated them from the rest My love, admiration and respect to the rest of these incredible songstresses  -   Carol Douglas, Thelma Houston, Tina Charles, Loleatta Holloway, Vicki Sue, Chaka Khan, Sharon Redd, Linda Clifford, Jean Carne, Grace Jones, France Joli, Evelyn King, Cheryl Lynn, Stephanie Mills, Melba Moore, Candi Staton and Diana Ross. But Gloria Gaynor is Queen
Donna Summer is the Goddess
Yours in music and dance,
Bobby Morales - NY
.......................

I heard a lot of music leading up to the great dance years, and Gloria Gaynor's recording of "Never Can Say Goodbye" with that great opening along with Donna Summer's "Once Upon A Time" have me in a dilema.  Both!!!!
Frank Pellici - NJ
.......................

I would have to choose the lady as the queen based on the one I grabbed for the most to fill the dance floor. The artist that spun on my platter the most had to be Donna Summer. So many classics. Ron she reached everyone with her dance anthems and pop songs. She evolved and grew as an artist. One important note is that she also has a gifted voice not just a pretty sound but a wonderful range that carries over into over styles of music. Donna Summer is my Queen.
Thanks for asking,
DJ Taz - Philly
.......................

We will make it short and sweet. I stated djing in 1976 when I was a freshmen in High School. The queen of Disco is Donna Summer. Now if you want to talk Diva, there was no better show than the one Grace Jones put on with her naval outfit. Also riding a Harley and singing "I need a man". Here in Miami Celi Bee had her time to rule also. Let not forget the unmistakable voice of Cory Daye. Nothing did it for me more the Dr. Buzzard in the summer of 76. That is all from this Miami Disco Kid. djradar "Let the Music Play"  - Florida
.......................

My feelings are from recollection of clubs I played at and places I visited and always observing crowd reaction to music played by the DJ™s. The Queen of disco would have to be Donna Summer. The royal Diva of dance would be Loleata Holloway.... Then a couple of  princesses are France Joli and Melba Moore.... The godmother of disco would have to be Gloria Gaynor. The godmother of soul was definitely Aretha Franklin. During the Glitter parties I hosted during 2000 at Windows On The World, I had the great pleasure of booking France Joli as our first featured performer. She sounds as good today as she did five years ago and even 25 years ago. We also booked Loleata Holloway for two shows... She put on spectacular performances each time without doing the same material....

We had Gloria Gaynor on our TV dance show doing "Honeybee"...which I feel was the song that started the BPM dance trend. Keep up the beat Dance

Giant Gene - Pa
.......................

The Boss and the Prize were songs composed by Ashford and Simpson. Nice cuts-but not the incrediblness of "It Seems To Hang On", that they cut or "Ain't No Mountain". However for dance, no better singer in our time then Donna, though first out of the gate was Gloria- who is very good, as are many others_Candi, Thelma,to name a few. However the greatest female vocal performance in our life seems to be Etta James' "At Last". It takes more peoples breath away then any. Greatest song coposition during our time is likely Jimmy Webb's "MacArther Park"- which Donna brilliantly made dance-the full lengthg version is to die for. The imagry is leaps beyond other song compositions, with killer lines that reach a peak of depth: "..and I'll never have that recipe again". Thanks for the inquiry.
 Kindly in Music,
Marc Fisher - Florida

.......................

Diana Ross came to the "disco beat" when Motown wasn't doing it for her anymore & Cher jumped on the disco bandwagon when her top 40 "bubblegum" music hit a dead-end. Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is without a doubt a disco classic & every woman's theme song. Loleata Holloway had great dance hits with (Hit & Run, Runaway and Love Sensation).... Vicki Sue Robinson (Turn The Beat Around & Hold Tight) & Carol Douglas (Doctors Orders & Midnight Love Affair) were 2 of the legends that started it all. Grace Jones (I Need A Man) & Andrea True (More, More, More) also gave great contributions in the early days of Disco, but are not queens.
Chaka Khan always comes up with something good & I never really cared for Carol Williams, definitely not queens. In my opinion, Laura Branigan was a 1 hit wonder (Gloria) Madonna is without a doubt "The Franchise". Her music will live on forever & I don't think she can get more popular then she already is. Donna Summer's music is incomparable and she hit the disco music scene at exactly the right time. Her music is without a doubt "Classics" & in my opinion, Donna Summer is "The Real Queen Of Disco."

; Tyrone "Ron" Kersey  (1949 - 2005)

Only 56 years young, "Ron" accomplished so much in so little time. He received a Grammy Award for "Producer Of The Year" for co writing one of the biggest Disco Hits of all Time, Disco Inferno. Born in North Philadelphia he majored in music at Edison high school. After serving our nation, in the Air Force, Ron returned to do some studio session work with the assistance of long time friend Norman Connors. He would write, arrange, produce and do some background vocals. He joined the popular musical group, The Trammps, as one of the original members. His first love was working in the studio as a member of MFSB and the Salsoul Orchestra. Philadelphia, being the home of R & B and the dance sound he worked with Vince Montana Jr., Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, Thom Bell and performed on albums with Lou Rawls, First Choice, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Dells, Teddy Pendergrass, The Manhattans, the O'Jays, The Whispers, The Temptations, Major Harris .........
With such wonderful success, Ron decided to move to Hollywood, where he could continue to write, arrange, produce and perform in studio work. He cowrote songs for Atlantic Starr, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Stephanie Mills, Rose Royce, Stevie Wonder, Robert Palmer, B.B. King, Grace Jones and Gloria Gaynor..just to name a few.
In 1997 Ron suffered a massive stroke. His daily life became a struggle. But, Ron always took the high road, not to complain and was focused on getting better.
This hard working soldier lost his battle but will always be remembered.
His hit song, 'Disco Inferno' continues to be used in movies, commericals....and can currently be heard on the Dannon Yogurt commercials.
Ron leaves behind a daughter, 2 loving sisters and brother, his father and a united caring family.

Letter to the Editor

Ron, Hope everything is well with you...I wanted you to know that I miss seeing my friends at Michael's Cafe. I've had a major accident with my foot.... it has made it very uncomfortable and painful for me just to walk in the recent past.... I've been disabled since the fall and it has slowed me down quite a bit......That's the bad news......The good news is I had a joint replacement on 2/21 and my first follow up w/the doctor yesterday yielded a slow but very positive recovery.....He sincerely commented to me that he wants to see me dancing and playing hardball again and without pain..I've been dancing and playing baseball w/alot of pain for the last couple years or so. Walking on my own at this point is probably a month away..I saw my new foot yesterday, for the first time, since the surgery and must tell you it is a work of art..It actually looks like a real foot...No, I didn't have TO's doctor but I have one that is excellent at Presbyterian Hospital in Philly...(Reference is available for anyone that needs podiatry help)....I highly recommend this man...Funny thing is that I heard his name in the dance community....My sincere regards to you and everyone..Take care,
John (Bigfoot) Rajchel

CBS television is taking a look at the Disco Phenomenon

There is a story on Disco (pegged to the opening of EMP's disco exhibit at the NY Public Library) which will probably air sometime in the next few weeks on CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood (9AM EST).
The producers are using a clip of the Disco Step-by-Step® Dance Television Show in this feature.
Please be advised that air dates on pieces like this (not news) change all the time, even as late as Saturday night. It is possible that even if this piece is scheduled to air, it could be bumped at the last minute. I  will do my best to let you know the exact date but keep in mind that everything is TENTATIVE.
Break out your Tivo or VCR. The best bet is to tune in the show for the next few weeks if you are interested in seeing this interesting and informative feature story on Disco.

Spot Light
   'Lorelei Lee'
She is among a rare breed of great dancers that had the opportunity to dance with the master. Lorelei just returned from Florida where she performed and partnered with the incomparable Francois Szony. Her exciting dance history has brought her to this point in time....adagio is in her blood.
Back in the 30's, there were many great dance teams. One of the most exciting couples were the popular Henriques & Adrienne. Bill Henriques, was a famed adagio dancer that traveled the country performing. His dancing evolved as he took on new challenges producing and choreographing dance.  While on the road, Bill and his wife Irma (who was a dancer in the show) had their first child, Lorelei. After the birth of their second child, Rex, the dance team decided it was time to settle down. After years of performing and touring, in 1958 The Henriques Academy of the Dance Arts opened its doors in Bucks County Pennsylvania. The dance center was received well and had great success. It also enrolled 2 new talented students, Lorelei and Rex.  By the age of 14, Lorelei was already performing with a ballet company and by 17 was touring in a professional show.  Rex went to college and majored in dance, earning his degree and focusing on show business. He had always loved adagio and was mesmerized by the great Francois Szony. It was only natural for these two kids to co mingle their talents, just as their parents had, as an adagio team. Their father passed away at a young age. Their mother would continue to run the dance studio in Bensalem Pa. by herself. Lorelei and Rex would tour the United States, South America, the Caribbean Islands and Acapulco performing. The studio would continue to grow over the years but suffered a terrible fire. Their mother decided it was time to sell the business that she had run for two decades. Like their parents,  Rex and Lorelei, decided to ground their touring days and take over the studio in 1984. Fast forwarding twenty-one years to 2005, the studio continues to thrive. Renamed, The Bucks County Dance Center, teachers from other area dance studios come to BCDC to hone their skills.
BCDC teaches dance to students from age 2 to Senior Citizens.  Six years ago Lorelei started a tap class for senior citizens Starting with only five seniors, the class has now grown to over thirty! " The Easy Steppers have appeared on Channel 3, Fox News, State Senator Tommy Tomlinson's Senior Expo as well as many other appearances.
"I met Francois last year in "Florida Follies." I was hired to partner with Bill Steele who I had danced with in a theater in Philadelphia twelve years ago" explains Lorelei.  "We did adagios, jitterbugs, Fred and Ginger number, basically all era dancing." In addition, Lorilee also performed with her daughter Brandy. They were a featured act in "The girl in the Mirror" from "Chorus Line" along with production numbers. When Lorilee arrived in Florida to partner with Bill, an accident occurred. Dance Legend, Francois Szony's partner was injured during a rehearsal. With the curtain rising in just a few hours...."the show most go on," Francois asked Lorilee to be his partner that evening. " After about a 45 minute rehearsal, I went on. I was so nervous I thought I would get sick before I entered the stage with the "great Francois Szony" shares Lorelei. The performance was an overwhelming success and the start of a new partnership.  Szony is to dance as Michael Jordan is to basketball, his partnership with Lorelei was not by chance.
Francois and Lorelei finished with "the Great American Follies" on February 6, 2005.  They performed to "Rhapsody in Blue," "Change Partners" and "the Continental." Our guest artist was Mickey Rooney and his wife Jan. Our star throughout the run was Robert Morse."
Together, Lorelei and Rex continue to direct BCDC located at 2292 Street Rd. in Bensalem, PA. In addition, Rex is an adagio dancer and professor of dance at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Over her career, Lorelei has performed in: "Alive and Well", "Chicago", "My One and Only",  "Carousel", "Showboat", "Music Man", "Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Forum", King and I", "Guys and Dolls", and "Pippin"
As a professional theater choreographer, her credits include "Annie Get Your Gun", "Mame", "Gypsy", "Man of La Mancha", and "Most Happy Fella, "She Loves Me", "Gypsy", "Jekyll & Hyde", "Wonderful Life", and "King and I".
With the great responses from the Florida Follies, Lorelei and Francois were asked to come to Montreal to audition for "Cirque" in Las Vegas.
We look forward to more exciting performances from this wonderful dancer.

Letters To The Editor

Hey Ron,
Anyone with the winter blues may find this idea of interest. I just enjoyed one terrific day in NYC! I had the opportunity to stop and see the Disco exhibit at the Lincoln Center Library. What a well conceived display incorporating music, garb, photos, signs, memorabilia, videos and DJ equipment. If you get the chance, go see it. And don't miss the 25 minute introductory film.
As an added treat, I was able to experience 'THE GATES' in Central Park. This is truly a unique bit of art history in the making, to which I encourage everyone to try and participate. The day was mild, the park was teaming with tourists... I heard more foreign languages today than at Disney's Epcot. 'THE GATES' is just a few short blocks from the Lincoln Center. 'THE GATES' is forever gone after February ends.
Paige
PS. Parking at the Lincoln Center Garage was reasonable for 6+ hours
PSS Rosa Marguerita is an upscale Mexican restaurant across from the Lincoln Center. (Pomagranite Margueritas their specialty) (Check out the 'Cliff divers' on the wall!)

Hey Ron,
Kathy and I are heading to MadJam next week. We have been learning west coast swing and look forward to taking some workshops. I hope other hustle dancers take the time to learn swing. The swing dancers are very cool and in my humble opinion a friendly group of dancers that invite others in. We have been around the hustle scene in NY - VA - NJ for a number of years and the hustle crowd could learn a lot from the swing dancers!!!
Look forward to seeing you and your family.
Mike

The Return of Disco

Get ready for Disco 2005 disco is back and it™s slicker, edgier and funkier than ever according to UK writer Eloise Fysh. The rebirth of disco was made official at the Brit Awards as the flamboyant five-piece 'Scissor Sisters' earned Best Group, Best Album and Best Newcomer in the international categories for their unique brand of retro sounds.  œThere are big signs of a revival, says Alex Needham, featured editor at NME magazine. œA lot of people think that disco™s cheesy, and the cheesier elements of it have been done to death, but at the same time there™s a lot of soulful music that hasn't been heard before and a lot of that's getting revived as well.
And it seems that the Scissor Sisters singers Jake Shears and Ana Matronic, bassist Baby Daddy, guitarist Del Marquis and drummer Paddy Boom aren't alone in their fresh take on the disco genre. Needham suggests that by diversifying the sound of disco and including the rock, Motown and 90s dance elements popularized by the Scissor Sisters, the genre has not only regained its popularity, but also adopted a newfound credibility.
œThey have created a sound of their own, successfully reviving the camp, cool, joyful sound of the 70s dancefloor for the 21st century. It™s well-crafted modern-day disco with a cool rock attitude which works on many levels.  So will Disco get new legs?
Needham believes we™ll be hearing a lot more Scissor Sisters-inspired sounds.
œPeople are bound to be inspired by them and to aim to do similar things. Franz Ferdinand have inspired a lot of other guitar bands and there are bound to be a lot of other bands who are struggling, making dance music, who™ll be inspired by the Scissor Sisters. The Scissor Sisters themselves, however, have their sights set firmly on conquering their home turf, the notoriously difficult US market.
Gambaccini explains that breaking the UK before hitting it big in the US is part of a long tradition, with the huge US market seemingly slower to catch on to the new wave. Yes, the US does tend to be slow at catching on. Hopefully, the young generations is ready to take a break from rap and experience the new dance sound.

This past week launched the highly anticipated Disco Exhibit at the New York Public Library. This free exhibit runs now thru May 14th 2005. The exhibit just arrived from Seattle. It is a true multimedia extravaganza. This is the first time Disco was put under a microscope and viewed as a life style, impacting our dress, music, dancing and culture. To kick off the grand opening, there was a press conference and a gala dance party held at the Spirit Night club in NY City. CBS was on hand along with the print media.  Earl Young, from the recording group the Trammps, Marty Angelo, from Disco-Step-By-Step, Giant Gene Arnold - The Sounds Of Philly, and dancers Luis & Mary Ann Rosa and Miquel Marrero & Amy Lefkowitz entertained the crowd. The original DJ from Studio 54, Nicky Siano, mastered the turntables keeping the floor pumping to the music that drove the disco era.
The Disco exhibit explores the hay days of Disco thru the decade until its demise? Or as asked, Did it? "Disco: A Decade Of Saturday Nights," includes over 200 artifacts from the dance era including classic footage from Mr. Marty Angelo's original television show "Disco Step-By-Step" which delivered the first television show dedicated to disco music and dancing. Your see some of the original costumes worn by John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Donna Summer, Nile Rogers......there are numerous souvenirs and 12 inch records on display. If your a fan of dancing, the music or the disco concept you have to experience this exhibit. Located at the Donald and Mary Oenslager Gallery, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center, 40 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York. Exhibition hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 12 noon to 6 PM, Thursday from 12 noon to 8 PM and closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays. Admission is free. Hi Ron,
The cancer is not gone. It is stable, but I feel I am getting better. I still struggle with my speech and my short term memory. The last MRI was done last week and the results indicate no growth even though there are still lesions present. They will probably begin a new protocol of chemo and meds.
Please let everyone know, I miss them and wish I was there dancing with all of you.
Love,
Gladys Torres

Dear Ron, I want to thank Drew Axelrod, Event Director, the staff and Royal Caribbean for an unbelievable dance vacation.  Everything about this vacation was A++++.  There was plenty of dancing, shopping, shows, sunbathing, dining and just wonderful people to share everything with!!  Everyone seemed to enjoy and take advantage of everything that there was to offer.  DJ Bobby Gerard was his usual extraordinary self. The music was just the best, as we danced into the wee hours of the morning.  It was the best vacation I ever had!!  I can’t wait until next year!   Thanks Drew! Caren Casper

GO Eagles

Spot Light
    "Luis Rivera"

In the mid 70's, a magical dance company was formed, The Disco Dance Dimensions, the hustle review of the time. Among this legendary troop was an unsung hero......Luis Rivera.
More of the quite type, Luis was tall, dark and handsome and WOW could he dance. Nobody actually taught him how to dance...he just watched and decided one day to just do it. Growing up in the Bronx, Luis was introduced to the hustle at an early age when tagging along with his older brother, a well respected DJ. His first experience of  the hustle was in 1973, at St. Mary's recreation center, located in the Bronx. "It was like a scene out of West Side Story, wall to wall dancing and a prehustle dance  called the Rock. "There was Eddie Vega dancing with three girls at the same time" remembers Luis, Eddy couldn't have been more then 9 years old at the time. Luis was instantaneously enamored by the hustle and was hooked.  From there, his dancing moved into the hot discotheques and, ... which ever clubs an underage guy could sneak in to: Ipanema, 310, The Red and White and Tropicalia. A short time later, Luis would be performing with George Vascones and the legendary 'Latin Symbolics'. After joining the troop, George partnered Luis with Edye. She had great finesse and could work a crowd.
A wonderful dancer that lived around the corner from Luis invited him to join the Disco Dance Dimensions. A superstar in his own right, Hector Berrios, was a member of the DDD. "He came banging on my door saying that Billy Fajardo was looking for another dance team and I would be perfect for the spot." Along with his second partner, Francine Gonzales, in 1977 they joined this popular dance review.
The company was made up of three teams: Billy & Sandra, Perico & Debbie and Hector & Jackie. Luis had an untapped bundle of energy that he would display with the Dimensions. This young maverick would now take a journey with the Dimensions that would span five years. Along the way, he would compete in contests and win first place at "The Starship."
His third partner was Alma Pagon. Known for her tremendous grace, Alma was a trained ballerina. Together, they competed and won the Roseland Championships.
One of Luis's most memorable performances was at the Harvest Moon Ball. "Ralph Lew wanted us to do something different." The troop selected a number from the motion picture 'Grease.' "It was awesome," recalls Luis, "the audience went wild."
In addition, the group did a performance at a Salsa concert held in Madison Square Garden. Dancing to “A 2001 Space Odyssey” with Tito Puente leading his band...the Garden rocked that night. Luis remembers a great synergy among the members of the troop. " As we traveled the world, we fought, laughed and cried together."
With the 80's, the dance landscape changed. The hustle was falling out of favor and there were fewer dance jobs.  Luis took a self inventory and found the time was right to enter college. His dancing was put on hold.
Today, he is a computer engineer, spearheading a major Internet project for a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical firm. "I've been involved in many facets of the computer industry ever since I left dancing," shares Luis.  Married with three beautiful kids, Luis stays in shape by working out at the gym, but, still stays connected with the hustle.
As a teenager growing up in the 70’s, he was faced with many difficult choices. Youth gangs, drugs and peer pressure were prevalent during that era. His love for dancing prevented him from making any wrong decisions.  The combination of practicing, traveling and performing, captivated his time. "I really never had a chance to think about anything else," reflects Luis. He is grateful to all those that provided him with friendship and the opportunities to dance. The late George Vascones, Hector Berrios and Billy Fajardo. His last contest was with Stracy Diaz. They won the “Sabado Gigante” dance contest, which is broadcast on cable television, UniVision.
The Dance Dimensions were an incredibly group of dancers literally becoming 'Hustle Central'.....  The troop gave rise to some of the biggest names from the disco/hustle era: Billy Fajardo, Sandra Rivera, Franc "Perico" Reyes, Debbie 'Rosado' Ferro, Hector Berrios, Laudes Jones and Eddy Vega.....with a pool of so many talents, he  could have been lost in the shuffle....but he wasn't.  "He always looked up to the elder statesmen of the group, and wanted to learn all that they would be willing to teach him...working hard to improve as an artist," praises long time friend Debbie  Ferro. "It was great having Luis as a fellow performer, travel companion, and friend."
As a quiet giant he made a great impact on this dance.  Whether he was performing with Celia Cruz, Mark Anthony or Sister Sledge.... he was at the forefront of the hustle. Visit Luis's website at www.ddd.larglobal.com or  www.larglobal.com/ddd/ddd.html

Hey Ron, ... A note to Dominic the DJ that provided your readers with his top-20 favorite songs from the Disco era (the artist that did "Manhattan Love Song"), it was King Errisson in 1977 (a very good song, one of my favorites too.)
Also, I would like to join Gloria in her birthday salute to George Velazquez George along with his friend Craig Yee would dance regularly to my music (I was the DJ at Penrods, now known as Zachary's for your younger readers).  When George and Craig, along with their dancing partners got on the dance floor, most everyone else cleared the area just to watch in awe.  Boy, they were good!  Happy Birthday George.
Regards,  Jackie McCloy

Hi Ron,
Although I don't get out to dance anymore I enjoy keeping up on the hustle and the information you share with everyone. Each week I print out your newsletter and now have been collecting them for three years. When I read your article on George Velazquez it reminded me of a man -  a great dancer from the New Jersey area, by the name of  David Seneca. He too was thrilling to watch.
Hopefully your write a story on him one day.
Keep up the great work,
Betty Thompson

Time Capsule
'The Playboy Classic'

It was at the peak of the disco craze and..... in the heart of the city. The year was 1979 and dance contests were as common as three piece white suits. Everywhere you turned, there was a contest and the popularity of the disco phenomenon attracted big time sponsors: Coca Cola, Paramount Pictures, Six Flags Great Adventure, Newport Cigarettes and even Playboy Enterprises. In honor of their 25th anniversary, the Playboy Club, in New York was hosting the Playboy International Classic Dance Contest. Winners would go onto a national competition where the grand prize winners would receive a contract to perform.  The contest was the grand daddy of them all. This put, head to head, some of the top couples in hustle.  The turnout was incredible. Nearly 50 dance teams signed up to showcase their routines.  Couples from near and far showed up to display their talents. This was the best of the best. Some competitors, coming from out of state, were set on putting their skills to the test against the dominating New Yorkers.
The place was a buzz.... Playboy Bunnies and all. The dance was still fresh and couples were pushing the envelope. Creativity was running wild. Costumes ranged from futuristic to down right... nude. The lifts and tricks were growing in the degree of difficulty. Each couple was given the opportunity to dance solo, center stage. When the couples lined up for the judges....it looked like a scene out of Star Wars.
Derrick Allen & Lilia, Miquel Marrero & Annette,  David Padilla & Baby, Artie Phillips & Lisa Nunziella, Ricky Quintana & Lee Rafrano, Lucas Jaime & Kathy Young, Michael &  Deidra, David Husney, James Stanford, Billy Fajardo & Sandra Rivera, Floyd Chishom &  Nellie Cotta, Juan and Donna, Barry Douglas, Scott Nurse & Elaina, Kenny Gonzales & Ronnie Chase, Roma Moon & Joseph,  Eddie Vega &  Laudes Jones.....
Each team was given only 2 minutes to strut their stuff. Since there were so many competitors the judges eliminated the group down to a second round inviting back only 20 couples. The quality of dancing was golden. The judges then invited back 10 couples to dance again (third time) to make their final decision.
The 10 finalists were given the opportunity to dance to their own selection of music.
Dancing to "Haven't Stop Dancing Yet," Derrick and Lilia captured first place.
Second place honors went to the late Eddie Vega & Laudes and third place went to Billy and Sandra.
It was a time that will live in infamy, Thursday Oct 18th, 1979, the same day the sick "Son Of Sam" captivated the country.... with his talking dog that commanded him to kill ladies of the night in New York City. Derrick and Lilia picked up their first place prize money, $1,500.00 and now prepared to jet set to California for the next step.  Honored with a write up in the NY newspapers the couple was off to LA to represent New York in the Grand finals. Winning dance teams from other states all descended on LA including the winning teams from London, France, Japan, South America and the Philippines. A couple, representing Manila, was disqualified because the young lady was underage. The finalists were wined and dined at the infamous Playboy Mansion owned by Hugh Hefner himself. They were all teated to a Los Angles NHL hockey game and closed out the night dancing in some of the finest night clubs. The final event was hosted by Dick Clark to a standing room only audience of thousands.
Not to be denied, Derrick and Lilia won first place. Bringing the gold back to New York with some spending change... $15,000.00
On the way they were contracted to perform at the Playboy Casinos in the Bahamas and in Puerto Rico.
What a time, what an era, what a great dance.
