As teenagers and young adults we are all faced with choices. Peer pressure, life styles and the environment we live in shapes our future. Many of the dancers from the 70's and 80's had to over come challenges. Many made it and some failed. Here is a look at some winners. It puts into perspective how the hustle moved so many young folks in a positive direction.

Time Capsule
'How The Hustle Saved Me'

Here is an inside look on how the "hustle dance" impacted the lives of some great individuals. Clearly, the dance enriched their lives growing up. Here are some inspiring memories. Special thanks to Chris Bates, Hector Berrios, Danny Llaurado (RIP), Donna DeSimone, Steven Mitchell, Luis Rivera, Franc.Reyes and Derrick Allen.
...........
Dancers like Hector Berrios and Franc "Perico" Reyes grew up in the tuff streets of the Bronx. Their lives have had many parallels.  While many dancers spent time competing in contests and hanging in the clubs...they were making money on a consistent basis. They were performing the hustle and getting paid to perform in shows. Hector's schedule included appearances in the Catskills and clubs in NYC. The opportunities grew as the troop (Dance Dimensions) began performing on the nationally televised 'Don Kirshner's Rock Concert' show. Touring Europe going to Morocco, Africa....all at the tender age of 15. Hector's skills were best put to use when he joined forces with Billy Fajardo. "Billy used his martial arts back ground to instill discipline in his dance troop which kept them together as a family. Billy helped change my life."  Dancers like Perico and Hector could've been on the streets, in the Bronx with the drug dealers, pimps, and thief's ..........but they made the right choices that changed their futures. Today, members of that dance group have gone on to successful careers in different endeavors. Hector is the pitching coach for the Brooklyn Cyclones, an affiliate of the NY Mets. Franc is producing and directing motion pictures in Hollywood. Not bad for some kids from the South Bronx.
In the mid 70's, South Philadelphia was the home of the Italian stallions, street gangs and second generation wise guys.  Steven Mitchell, aka Gypsy Stevie, grew up in this environment. At the early age of 12, he was a war lord in a tuff street gang. When he turned 13 he was captivated by the disco music and started dancing at school dances. As a young teenager he was getting into the adult night clubs.  "By going to the clubs and staying out of the streets, the dancing helped keep me alive. While I was dancing in the clubs all the street crime was happening." It wasn't the booze that attracted them to the clubs but the music and the dance.  By the age of 16 he was competing in dance contests so he walked away from this dangerous street life. He found a new passion...the hustle. By 20 years of age, the dancing started to slow down (the mid 80's) and he started to go back to the street life and got caught up in trouble. Thankfully, when I got back into dancing a few years later, he got away from the street action and has improved his life.
My experience started in 1976 when all you needed to get into a club was a non photo ID, I was 16 years old but looked 22. Today, Donna DeSimone acknowledges how the club scene opened a whole new world for her.  "The music, atmosphere, guys and oh yes the dancing, I was hooked." She did her homework, watched and studied some of the great dance pros of the day. She attended socials at Dance Charisma, NY Hustle, Star Studios......"I had amazing role models to watch." In 1983 she hooked up with New York Express and found a whole new world of Ballroom dancing. Donna went on to win the 1986 USBC Amateur Rhythm Championship. Her early hustle roots took her on to developing a solid reputation as a choreographer creating ballroom shows for Carnegie Hall and Hershey Park. The Hustle was a stepping stone for other things. "I have had the time of my life and made some amazing and talented friends, I wouldn't trade my experience for anything , dancing became my life force and you can't put a price on that."
It was about twenty-five years ago when he was a junior in high school, "I was just a jock, you know, just a jeans and tee shirt kind of guy" reflects Chris Bates.  Well, I start dating around that time and going out was not the same, you see the drinking age at that time was twenty-one and I was just seventeen years young! " Chris knew just about every scam for an underage guy to get into the dance clubs. "My first club was Squires in Fairhills and that's where I first saw the hustle dance. I would watch the Italians dance with such grace and how all the ladies would love to come up to them and ask them to dance over and over again... that's when I knew that I had to learn that dance."  But back in the day, not everyone would show people of color "the brothers" the dance. It was hard for me back then wanting to know but no one would take the time out to show me. But he was determine to learn. Another popular club was the Dance Machine, located in Bound Brook, that's where he met two great dancers, Dave & Cindy. This accommodating couple took the time to show him the basic steps and hustle turns. "I would go home and practice every night with two ropes attached to a door knob as the lady. It stared to work for me, I was learning and it felt good. This new found love had a great impact on him. He started to dress differently in school and was more respectful to people... not just caring about himself.  "My whole out look on life changed for me with this dance. I made a promise to myself, that if I ever got really good at this dance, "hustle," that I would not do to others what was done to me, that I would take the time and show who ever wanted to lean the hustle because we all have a place in this dance World!  I'm a much nicer person and I owe this all first to my mother for putting up with me going out dancing on school nights and covering for me when the football coach was out looking for their starter the night before a game. The Hustle for allowing me to meet so many people and for bringing a little happiest in their life and to make them smile and laugh!
Hey, I can't say that I came from poverty, but I came from a very humble middle class family in Jamaica, Queens, who could not afford to send me to College, recalls Derrick Allen. "That is why the Hustle had such an impact on my life." It was the Hustle that afforded him the opportunity to get an education... "that allowed me to be the "white collar guy" I am today."  I'm not proud of the fact that I had my fair share of troubles and brushes with the law before I started dancing.  But I do know, that  dancing helped make the steps on my path a whole lot easier and rewarding.
Sometimes its hard for people who were not involved in the scene some 25 years ago to truly understand and appreciate how big the hustle was. For Derrick it helped support him and further his college education. "During my brief years in the dance scene my winnings and involvement in the hustle allowed me to comfortably complete my college education without working full time jobs and killing myself like so many of my classmates. I'm not sure if I would have been able to complete my education at SJU if not for dancing."
Many male dancers got into dancing to meet ladies. The ladies were captivated by the music, the joy of dancing and to be lead by that special guy.  But for others, it took them off the streets and gave them a productive outlet for anger, keeping them away from mischievous things, gang fights, etc. Unfortunately for some, after the dancing was over, they returned to the dark side and ended up at the bottom of the barrel and in some extreme cases.... behind bars. Dancing was a way for many dancers to express their machismo. Fortunately, many of these dancers used these skills to catapult themselves to a higher echelon in life.

The Best in New Dance Music

The newest BadBoyJoe record was just released and is available nationwide at all Best Buy, FYE, Tower Records & Sam Goody music stores. The new CD is called "Bad Boy Joe presents The Best of NYC Vocal Clubhouse" MegaMix Recordings.
This is wonderfully mixed for non stop dancing. No need to buy 21 different CDs when you can own this hott compilation with the newest released dance tracks.
The beats per minute ranges from 124bpm to 134bpm. This is high energy recording with 21 new hit songs. My personal favorite is "I Like IT" by Narcotic Thrust. This song is climbing the Billboards Dance Music charts. My vote for dance song of the year. Also included is the popular song "Move Ya Body" by Nina Sky. Two of the top songs on the radio "How Did You Know" by Kim Sozzi and "If I Close My Eyes" by Reina are included. Other notable songs are "Get Up Stand Up" by Stellar Project, "Play Your Part" by the wonderful voice of Deborah Cox, "Surrender" by Lasgo and "As The Rush Comes" by Motorcycle. All in all, the compact disc is 79 minutes of vocal dance tracks. This recording is the perfect CD for a holiday dance party. If your looking for hot dance music of today...it's all here. www.BadBoyJoe.com

Special thanks to Zachary's for their commitment to dancing and sponsoring such a generous contest. Stay tuned for weekly updates.

Letters To The Editor (send letters to Rowenlb22@aol.com)

Ron we really enjoy your Dancetalk. I would like to weigh in on the growth of hustle dancing in Wallingford - Connecticut. About a year ago a group of six of us started dancing at the night club located in the Holiday Inn. Many of us hadn't been out hustle dancing in a few years. The disc jockey was happy to play some of the disco songs from the 70's along with more current dance stuff.  The Fiday night dance gathering  would get less then a dozen hustle dancers along with the 50 regulars that came to the club.
As of November the numbers are now about 30 hustle dancers and 100 or more regulars.   Although we are not big drinkers we buy bottled water and the hotel guests love watching us dance.  The mangement seems thrilled with the success. I feel the results are from a flexible disc jockey that mixes up the new songs with the golden oldies and our group of hustle dancers have been willing to teach new dancers and help others learn the steps and get involved. I hope to write to you again when we get our group up to 50 hustle dancers. All I ever hear from the dancers is how they live for Friday nights.
Happy holidays,
Dave Bello
...........
We are planning to attend the Holiday spectacular dance evnet you and Donna Boyle are holding. It sounds like a great night. I do have a question about the dancing contest. Do you have to live in that area to compete in the contest? I would hate to drive down and not be allowed to dance in the contest. Thanks,
Carmen
Response - Anyone can dance regardless of their residence. Last year George Azpura from NY won the Professional division in Philadelphia.
...........
Guys and ladies - dancing is about as close and personal as you're going to get with strangers and casual friends (next to the occasional one night stand.) So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure - before you head out for dance class or to the club - that you shower, change into clean clothes, and use deoderant or antiperspirant. It's extremely unpleasant to dance with someone who does not maintain good personal hygiene - and makes it very tough to enjoy the dance or lesson.
Why the heck are we even talking about this?
Because people have expressed concerns to us -  and this is our subtle and diplomatic way of asking those who don't to please take a little extra grooming time to help make your next class or social dance at the club/ballroom a bit more pleasant and enjoyable for your partners.  It is not our intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable so please don't ask about specifics.  Thanks - everyone!

Video Review -  The 7 Universal Basics - The Gallaghers

Its the holiday season and the perfect time to treat your self, or a friend, to an informative video that will help improve your hustle dancing. The hustle is a fun, exciting dance that has evolved over the years.....becoming a bit more challenging. Regardless, where you reside, if you know the basics to the hustle, a dancer from the East can lead or follow someone from the West...or just about anyone if you know the universal steps.
The seemingly indomitable team of Brian and Silvana Gallagher, have released an instructional video tape that focuses on getting started in the Hustle. Known for their strong skills in technique and form, this exciting dance duo introduces dancers to the fine points of the hustle. The Gallaghers are the current 2004 IHSC Open Professional Van McCoy and Professional Just Hustle Champions in addition to winning virtually every Hustle title over the past 10 years. They share with viewers their winning approach towards tackling the hustle. Whether your looking to get started, refine your current skills or prep for a contest...this video is packed full of fundamental information. Both the lead and follow steps are effectively covered and easy to understand.
My dance thesis has always been: learn to execute the dance and they will come.
Well, Brian and Silvana break down the steps, individually for the leader and the follower, then perform the steps together as a couple. The tape includes a preparation step, the cross body lead, open break/changing sides, the wrap, the Las Vegas, New York walk and shadow comb steps.  Whether your new to the hustle or old school, these are the standard steps executed on the social dance floor. If you have always wanted to know the proper count and footwork to perform these patterns...then read on.
The patterns are demonstrated, counted and broken down for a clear understanding. Both the leader and follower are informed where to step and displace their weight. The videographer focuses on the footwork and follows the movements, precisely covering multiple angles of the patterns so you have a good view of how the movements should look. The demonstrations are done slow enough for viewers to follow.  In addition to the basics steps, Brian and Silvana discuss body form, proper hand positioning, coordinating the counts with the proper step, working the track and preparation for setting up the next step. After all the seven basic steps are broken down and demonstrated, the Gallaghers combine all the steps counting them out and dancing them to music.
If your looking to drive your dancing to the next level and need some inside pointers this tape is a most have. Here is the information to put this in your holiday stocking.
To order a copy of Seven Universal Basics go to www.Ladyhustle.com. The video is $40.00. (free shipping included). If you order on line, there is a $3.00 processing fee when using a credit card via PayPal. You can also purchase by mail, send checks to Silvana Gallagher, c/o DanceSport101, 7584 Haverford Avenue,  Philadelphia, PA 19151

Dear Ron,
I am very thankful for your newsletter and the stories that you have covered over the years. I am an amputee (my left leg). I was injured 4 years ago in an automobile accident that left me wheel chair bound for 18 months. I was fitted with three different prosthesis over the years. I am now ready to return to dancing. I was so excited to read about the wheel chair dancing and the heart warming article on George Velazquez. This has helped give me the motivation to return to dancing. To any one else that suffers a life threatening accident or illness, I encourage you not to give up, as there are many good dances ahead for us all.
God Bless you,
Phyllis Troy

Ron,

We had New Jersey's Darlin Garcia come in to teach Salsa Workshops and give a dance exhibition in Detroit over the past weekend.  Darlin, is currently performing with "Art in Motion," and formerly a member of Juan Calderon's "Cultural Explosion," based out of your area.  In one word, Spectacular.  The man takes burning the floor and complex turn patterns to a new height.  Perhaps the best I've ever seen, very impressive.  The Salsa social was the best social dancing I've ever experienced in Michigan and the creativity on the floor reminded me of the old days of Hustle.

Hey Ron,
Thanks for the congrats to Jami.
I saw the show Monday and Tuesday and it's amazing. You get a little bit of everything. Spectacular sets, gorgeous showgirls, Great singers and musicians, wonderful costumes, a little magic and acrobats, an amazing adaggio couple and of course, the dance numbers are spectacular - (unbiased opinion!). The audience members get to see some hustle during the "Conga" number (with a little help from yours truly) and the Latin Hustle is mentioned during a voice over about the evolution of the music and dance.I would recommend it to everyone that wants to see a great show. It's not too risque for the kids. The casino website is www.tropicana.net
Thanks,

Hello Ron!
I'm writing to you because I happened to read Dancetalk, and noticed that
you had an incredible article praising Butchie!  I haven't seen anything
written about him before or heard anyone talk about him in a long while.  I
wanted to say Thank You for that.  I met Butchie years ago in 1989, when my
friend Michael introduced me to him at Steppin Out on a Wednesday night.  I
was so enchanted with his dancing, and with him.  I was truly impressed
with him.  His personality in dance WAS his personality.  He was so warm
and down to earth.  What a loss we all felt when we found out that he was
sick.  He never turned down anyone who wanted to dance.  It didn't matter
if you were a beginner.  He didn't even think twice about it. When he was
in your company, you felt like you were in the presence of someone who
really cared about you as a human being.  He made dancing fun, you couldn't
make a mistake with him, he would turn it into a new move.  He was funny,
and a genuine human being.  I really got to know him, and when he finally
got sick to the point where he couldn't come out anymore, we really felt a
loss.  It just wasn't the same without him.  He was a hard act to follow.
Where ever we would go to dance, when we would run into him, we would just
watch him in amazement, and watch everyone else amazed as well.  That was a
show all of its own!!  Thanks for publishing this tribute to a great human
being, Butchie!

I've had the distinct opportunity to meet, compete and watch William Everett work his craft. What most fascinated me about this dance artist was not only his ability to master the social dance floor but is unlimited ability to bump it up a notch to compete in the open events. Known for his floor work....it blew us away when he executed over head lifts and tricks. Few hustle dancers have been able to shine in both the competitive ranks and social scene as he did.
Although he is gone, some of todays greats have shared their thoughts.
Thanks to Sammy "Diamond" Marti, Roma Moon, Lisa Nunziella, Luis Rosa, Artie Phillips, David Padilla, Billy Marti, Bobby O, and Luis Rivera......for their memories ....helping to share this wonderful dancers contributions with us all.

Spot Light
William 'Butchie' Everett"

When ground breaking musicians like the Rolling Stones and The Beatles rose in the 60's, they didn't attend any Rock & Roll Universities. They took creative license as they developed a new sound. Although the hustle dance took sail in the early 70s' it was still in its infancy. The Hustle is the youngest new social dance, only a mere 30 years old. Dance studios began to teach the basics and fundamentals in the mid 70's but the real hustle laboratory took place on the dance floor. One of the leaders of this dance study was a kind gentlemen, William Everett, known to most of us as Butchie.
During the disco era, the hustle dance was humming along gaining more respect in the Social Ballroom division.  Although it started off as a street dance it began to take shape..... becoming polished like a fine stone. One extraordinary dancer that helped elevate the dance was Butchie. Whether he was leading or following he was a sight to behold. He did both, (lead and follow) with precision and finesse. The typical club or studio was packed with hustle dancers... the common ritual was to start a circle. Those forming the circle protected the dancers inside from being bumped and/or to prevent someone from walking thru and disrupting the dance. Butchie attracted the biggest circles. With all eyes on him, Butchie was in his element. His confidence was an A+, he was very creative and is credited with delivering many of the steps still used today.  Combining hand & arm movements, facial expressions, foot work and lighting fast spins....he commanded your attention.
Born in Elmhurst Queens, NY, this gentlemen did it all on the dancefloor.
Alexis Dance Studio, 86th Street & Broadway, owned Monday nights. As you entered this popular dance spot, Hy Landa would greet you at the door. This was the nonpartisan studio where the finest  came to dance: Melvin Scurry,  Debbie Ferro, Diane Nardone, Arte Phillips, Kenny Gonzalez, Perico, Hector Berrios, Ray Bogart,  Roma Moon, Keith Merriwether, Maria Torres, Scott Nurse, Ralph Lew, George Velazquez, Julio & Nelly Diaz, Kelvin Roach, Derrick Allen, Miquel Marrero, Tony & Renee....., Bobby O remembers Hy Landa telling him, 'you got to see this guy dance',  the amazement of watching Butchie in action. "Along with the great Eddie Vega it was Butchie that was the trend setter, gliding around the floor...taking the uncorniness out of the hustle." Even the ladies watched in envy.
During the summer, dancers would gather in Linden Street Park. The local Disc Jockeys would hook up their equipment to the light posts and spin till midnight. There was a talented group of hustle dancers that ruled Bushwick, Brooklyn, recalls Sammy Marti.  At the center of the group was a young Butchie. His early styling influenced many other greats.... like a local neighbor from Queens, Arte Phillips. "There was no one else like him." recalls Arte. "He was dancing back in 1974, he came before most the others."  Butchie saw Arte and took him under his wings. He gave Arte direction and helped him develop his dancing.
From here the clubs were the next dance stop. The 'after party' on Monday nights was at the Ice Palace, 57th street, for the weekly dance contest. "He loved dancing very much, he was all about floor work" reminisces long time friend David Padilla. "Butchie knew how to execute lifts but he always preferred floor work."
Dancing 7 nights a week they hung out at Ipenema, Promoters in Brooklyn, Disco Inferno and the Limelight in the village...."I remember the first person to do the grapevine into the hop, if I'm correct he invented that routine, he had incredible hand work, his floor work was no joke either."
The Tour De France of Hustle was the Harvest Moonball Championships.  This was an annual fall competition held by the American Ballroom Association, which attracted dancers from all over the tri state area. It was so big, it was held in the Felt Forum, within the Madison Square Garden.  Preliminaries and qualifications took place weeks prior at large ballrooms like Roseland.
In 1981, Butchie and Carmen Barba qualified for the Harvest beating out dozens of other teams. First place honors that year  went to Eddy Vega & Nellie Cotta.   Butchie would return the next year to qualify and move on to the final show down in the Moonball with another dance partner, Migdallia Paez, to give it another shot.
"Butchie was an amazing dancer with a great attitude. He loved to dance and his passion was evident," Lisa Nunziella reminds us.  Butchie, was a man with a small physical stature but his dancing was enormous. He had such presence and the ability to make anyone look great due to his incredible lead.  "I remember him at the Ice Palace back in New York when we would dance all night long.  I enjoyed dancing with Butchie, he always inspired me on the dance floor....we miss him," expresses Lisa.
Although he is gone, Butchie has left an indelible mark, which can still be witnessed in the hustle today. Butchie lived for dancing and the classy hustle of today  expresses the styling of William "Butchie" Everett.
Along with all the others...we thank him.

Letters to the Editor

Hey Ron,
I really liked the letter from Lorraine Chapman,...  it brought back memories of my own. My former partner (Carol Domino) and I were in the same movie (Can't Stop The Music). We were on the first row stage right. I remember flying into San Francisco and filming in a warehouse that was converted into a spectacular Club for the movie. They filmed our dance sequence the night after Halloween so you can guess what the casting call for extras looked like that night.   When the movie premiered in Houston the producers provided us with a limo. We arrived at the theater in style amongst a crowd of our fans signing autographs. We were minor Houston Dance celebrities for a short while and it was great! The movie was so bad that it's not even shown on late night TV but I ordered a copy from Amazon.com last week. ....  Some years earlier I appeared on Dance Fever, back in the days when Disco was king and Hustle was sweeping the country. It was the highlight of my life at that time because I was just a street dancer that got my 15 minutes of fame on a national TV show. My partner (Kim Negron) and I, names were in the Newspaper and Spot Lighted in the city TV guide.  I'm looking for a copy of my performance... If anyone has copies of that show let me know. We represented Houston the year a couple from L.A. won the finals with a free style routine (2nd or 3rd season).
At Disco America 2002 Denny Terrio told me that he had tapes of all of the shows,  if anyone has contact information please pass this message on.

Letters to the Editor

Hi Ron,
I wanted to comment on your music article where you acknowledged the contributions of those artists no longer with us. Dan Hartman was an incredible musician, composer and singer. He earned great fame as an original member of the Edgar Winter Group. I like to think of them as a dance rock band. He had co written the smash hit song Frankenstein. His roots were in rock and roll but he set out to expand into the disco sound. This took him on a magical solo career. He again met great success with hit songs like Instant Replay and Relight My fire. Although his career was cut short, he had achieved so much.  He had a great love for music and how it moved people.
Dear Ron, thank you for remembering my cousin.

Hi Ron

I would like to respond to Monique Bryher email regarding hustle/dance etiquettes..I have been dancing since the early 80s , I love the hustle, and salsa, and any type of partnership dancing, I've gotten involved more so for the past 8yrs, and also have competed in a few competitions, and its rewarding to my self-esteem..However I also noticed that if you don't dance up to par..the old time dancers wont ask you to dance. There is too many clicks out there that dance upon themselves, and dont ask a new comer to dance. To a new comer that is discouraging, and for a woman thats more discouraging , thats why they leave that type of dance. Think about this The hustle has one foot in , and one foot out the door..it up to the man to ask a woman (mostly) to dance regardless on the level of her dancing , to encourage, and keep it alive. There is always someone better then you , and someone worse then you, that is where etiquette plays a role in the dance world. For me its a big turn off to see that, but I keep going because I love it , and wont stop regardless, BUT
for the new comer its very easy to say the hell with this. Im sure that there are people out there that can relate. KEEP THE HUSTLE ALIVE..ask a newcomer not only that you will make that person feel good..it will be good for you too.
Rosetta

How are you Ron,
I had to write you to express how much I enjoy your Dancetalk e mail. I am a product of the seventies and love to read about the hustle dancers from my era. I live in Hilton Head and have stuggled to grow an interest in the hustle dance,,,,, but will not give up the fight....... It is hard to forget that just a few years back we jammed the discoteques with wall to wall people. Back then I danced in many contests and through winning prize money, it helped pay for my college tuition. My biggest claim to fame was winning a huge contest that ultimately flew us out to Califorina to appear in the Village People movie "Can't Stop The Music". It was a great experience and I still have autograph pictues from The Village People. I can be seen in the movie at the end when they had the balloon drop. I had long shoulder length blonde hair....... IT was one of the highlights of my dancing days.......................

Broadway musicals are thriving again. Utilizing the music from pop singers and rockers like ABBA, Elton John, Billy Joel...their music has helped create a new direction for Broadway. Look for new musicals featuring the music of Frankie Vallie & the Four Seasons (Jersey Boys), then in December the sounds of the Beach Boys will be featured in a new musical, Yoko Ono has approved a musical for next summer using her late husband John Lennon's material, a traveling show featuring the music of the late Johnny Cash's life and then next spring the King hits Broadway... as in Elvis.

SHALL WE DANCE, is being shown Sunday evening October 24th at Rogers Dancesport at approximately 7pm. The movie features Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Susan Sarandon, Gary McDonald & Holly from Rogers. Private students are FREE, group class students - $5, Non-Students $10. The Anita Secchia - Fund Raiser

The fund raiser for Anita was a great success. DJ Johnny V along with Doreen worked their hearts out to show their love and support. Our dear friend Anita Secchia has been stricken with colon and liver cancer. Her friends have come to her aid and held a wonderful night of dancing at the IBBG club in NY. Many people baked goodies while others were kind enough to donate gifts or their services for the raffle. The house was packed and moved by the dance performance of Donna DeSimone and James. Stephanie sang a wonderful song, courtesy of BU records, Barry performed a hip hop routine while DJs Johnny V, Nino Torre and Chris manned the music booth. Many professional dancers, friends and dignitaries were on hand to show their support including, Bobby O, Diane Nardone, Bobbi Petri, Lori Brizzi, Robin Amante, Howard, Rhythm Force (Jerry Hobbs, Bryan Attale), Mayor Tony Troiano, Charlie "Mr Zacharys" and Mimi....
Anita made a short speech. It was a night to remember. If you were unable to attend you can still send a donation to the address below.

Dear Ron, I really enjoyed the photos you sent capturing the wheelchair dance social. It looked as much fun as ever! I was happy to see so many familiar faces, & equally happy to be able to put faces to names of dancers for Barry. (He did recognize Adam from our white water rafting trip and sends greetings.) Seeing the photos & reading your weekly update means a lot to me as I recover from my rotator cuff surgery. My best to everyone at Michael's.

To all our old and new friends who made the GLITTER party a huge success,
we’d like to thank you for making September 11th a memorable night. It was great to see so many dancers come out  reminiscent to the great times we had at ‘Windows On The World’ four years ago. All of you made this night itself, unforgettable. Everyone present had such a real look of joy, almost elated with lot’s of smiling all night. Our words of remembrance for Blake Fiore who passed away three weeks ago were well received by all. Jeannine, his last girlfriend over a year, attended our event with mixed emotions. She left high spirited and content, it made my night. Our friend Roe said to me she saw sparkles in the beams of lights from ground zero on her way into the party. I didn’t give it too much thought till I headed home at about 3:30AM and decided to drive back home on the west side. When I got about 2 blocks from ground zero and the beacons of light, I saw the sparkles and kept saying WOW, over and over again, about a dozen times. It made me think the sparkles were the souls of 9/11 but then I instantly ruled that these sparkles were the wishes of all New Yorkers making their way to the heavens. After all, WOW stands for Windows On the World.....
Thanks again, warm wishes

Hello Ron,
I've read through your hustle/dance etiquette followed by the reasons why people (presumably women) are leaving hustle. The same holds out here in Los Angeles: there are too few leads. However, IMHO, perhaps the restriction that they be only male is the problem. I'm slowly learning to lead and I know once I am at a level to competently do so with a dozen steps or so at a steady tempo I will have no problem finding willing followers, male or female. It held true with ballroom, which is certainly more conservative . . . Times are changing, and as women's lib opened doors for women in professions that were formerly closed to them prior to the 1970s, I think dancing will go the same way to a certain extent. Anyway, a good dancer should be able to do some of both. At the main club I attend, hustle is danced by all combination of sexes, either leading or following. If the dances are executed well, it shouldn't matter who is doing the leading or following.  I'm expecting to start attending some of the hustle cruises, so I'm sure I'll see you there. Hustle is a wonderful, energetic dance. Rather than letting something so beautiful die out, it needs to get sold to the next generation. Looks like you've made a good start with your daughter.
Best,
Monique Bryher

Hi Ron,
Thank you for adding my event in your newsletter.  I hosted a NY style Hustle Workshop in North Carolina, on September 18, 2004.....So many of my New York friends contacted me and were excited to see it in DanceTalk.  I'm trying to spread the word about HUSTLE here in the South!  The event turned out fabulous, and I believe the Carolinas are catching the fever!!!!!  Thanks a bunch for your support.  You're doing a great job with Dance Talk.

Dear Ron: I had no idea that there was a new movie (Shall We Dance) coming out until I read it in your letter. I am thrilled.  We go dancing every Saturday night at different night spots in Delaware. There seems to be less couples touch dancing when we go out. Even on tv there are less shows about dancing.  I hope this new movie is an incredible success. As you had said the dance business needs a good shot in the arm. I would love to see more couples dancing up close and intimate as we did 15 years ago. I'm crossing my fingers and toes. Thanks for keeping us informed.

Spot Light
'Gary McDonald'

He is quickly becoming a dance legend, Gary McDonald, half of the incredible team of Gary and Diana, has gone, Hollywood, at least for the making of the new motion picture 'Shall We Dance'.  Gary was brought on as the head dance trainer for the stars ...two of today's biggest box office draws actors Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez.
Working along with choreographer Liz Curtiz, Gary had spent three intense months training the actors. JLO has a strong background in Jazz, hip hop while Richard Gere has minimal experience in soft shoe. The ultimate goal was to make them shine in the Quick Step and Waltz. Gary stresses the fact "there are no dance doubles." What you see - is them. The movie is based on the original motion picture which dates back 67 years ago to 1937. The lead actors in the original were the incomparable team of Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers. Considered to be their best work, the movie had a Gershwin score including the hits 'Lets Call the Whole Thing Off' and 'They Can't Take That Away From Me.'  Clearly, Gary had a big challenge on his hands but with his championship record, he thrives in these situations. Along with his wife Diana, Gary has competed in 24 World Championships and was the first American couple to win the World Ballroom title. They are also the undefeated United States 10-Dance Champions for the past 10 years, competing in ten styles of ballroom.  You may have seen them dance or co-host on television stations NBC, ESPN, A&E or PBS.
Gary's incredible dance history began at the early age of 7. Coming from a dance family, he spent five days a week - Eight hours a day with actor Richard Gere, for three months in preparation for the movie. This required Gary to work in Canada with Jennifer Lopez.  Jennifer who has so many credits and titles to her name (recording artist, actress, videos, perfume and clothing lines) previously performed with Diana McDonald, years ago in the same dance troop in NY.
Not being busy enough, Gary makes his dance/acting debut as he performs in the movie with JLO as her dance partner.
With great anticipation for the national release on October 15, 2004, http://www.miramax.com/shallwedance , the red carpet debut will take place on Wednesday the 13th. Gary is quite proud of the final production. "It looks great," states Gary, "both actors did a fine performance."
Backed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, many of the original classic songs are used thru out the movie.
Gary & Diane are the co-owners of the Rogers Dancesport Center in Fairfield, New Jersey. They also host their own annual ballroom competition, the Manhattan Dance Sport Championships.
We look forward to the theatrical release of Shall We Dance and hope it gives the dance industry a well deserved boost. You can read more about Gary and Diana at the following sites.  www.Dancesportcenter.com , www.Manhattandancesport.com

Dance Music Hall Of FameReview)

Last Monday, Spirit in New York City hosted an incredible Red Letter celebration of the music and stars of the 70's and 80's. This night was a 30 year odyssey thru the music that created the disco era. The Dance Music Hall Of Fame recognizes the contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution and development of dance music. This past week 13 notable artists, producers, remixers, DJs and individual records were inducted. This industry event brought many of the genius's of yesterday together for an uplifting evening. To balance out the gala of performances, tributes, awards and DJ sets.... 7 hustle dance couples took to the stage to entertain the audience. Raluca Georgio & Walter Levy,  Luis Rosa & Mary Poma,  Chris Bates & Trisha Caballero,  Ron Bess & Joanne Piazza,  Donna Boyle & David Padilla,  Susan Fritz & Carl Charles and Bobby O & Yvette Rivera.
The night got under way with a music set by Long Island DJ Jackie McCloy.
The Masters of Ceremonies were Al Bandero, of radio station WKTU, along with Nile Rogers from the group Chic.  Hall OF Fame Board member Thomas Silverman (CEO of Tommy Boy Records) inducted music legend Henry Stone. Mr. Stone was given the Life Time Achievement award for his six decades of contributions.  Henry was a music pioneer/producer and signed K.C. and the Sunshine Band and many other important musicians to his TKO record label.  Earl Young, from the Trammps, inducted Tom Mouton for his remixing. Tom is noted for the work he completed with Gloria Gaynor, First Choice, MFSB, the Trammps and many others.
Other recipients included: Thelma Houston's song "Don't Leave ME this way,"
DJ David Mancuso, the record "Love Is The Message" by MFSB, The BeeGees,
DJ Larry Levan, Singer/composer Barry White,  the song "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" by Sylvester.  Donna Summer was inducted and her award was received by her daughter Amanda, on her behalf. Amanda is the mirror image of her beautiful Mom.   The tall, dark and gorgeous Singer/actress RuPaul inducted producer/composer/writer Giorgio Moroder. Donna Summer along with Giorgio set the Gold Standard for dance music in the 70's and 80's. Giorgio's production work with Donna Summer won them both numerous Grammy awards. However, he has also been the recipient of many Emmy awards for his motion picture soundtracks including Flashdance, Fame, Top Gun, Scarface and so much more. Mr. Moroder also composed the hits "Here TO Eternity," "The Chase" and "Get On the Funk Train" ...A true musical genius.
Also inducted was the late DJ Tee Scott, and the song "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer.
Each year the nominating committee will select nominees in all the categories and then send the choices to an international voting committee made up of over 1000 dance music experts. Candidates become eligible 25 years after their contribution or record release.
Martha Wash, from the groups Weather Girls and Two Tons OF Fun, sung happy birthday to Nile Rogers and also wished a sad good-bye to her long time friend/singer Izora Rhodes Armstrong, who passed away just days ago. Izora and Martha were the singers for Sylvester.  Evelyn 'Champagne' King sung her classic hit "Shame." Her song was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Kurtis Blow rapped his popular hit "These Are The Brakes"...and showed us that he can still get down and break dance.
D Train's lead singer took the stage and performed one of their classic hits that had the audience spelled bound. It was simply superb.  A special tribute to Donna Summer was performed by contemporary artists Reina and Kim Sozzi. The two sung a duet of 'Last Dance' which was a defining moment of the night. Reina currently has the number one dance song in the nation "When I Close My Eyes" while Kim has the monster hit "How Did You Know" which is climbing the charts with a bullet.
Dance music royalty was in full attendance: Frankie Knuckles (the Whistle song), Vince Montana Jr. of the Salsoul Orchestra (composer/writer), Promoter Magique,

Music CD Review
Ultimate Hustle Dance Mix

Disc Jockey Johnny V has just completed his first Compact Disc appropriately named "Ultimate Hustle." As one of the most popular club DJs, Johnny has compiled some of the hottest hustle dance songs on one compact disc. Created for the dancer, Johnny has hand picked the songs that he has witnessed ...drive the hustle dancers to the floor. "These are the songs that get the reactions from the dancers...I put them all together on one CD so they can have them all." Many of these songs are hard to find and/or out of print.... for instance "Make it Up to me In Love" by Paul Anka and the haunting theme from Love Story "Where Do I Begin" by Andy Williams. How about the classic Johnny Mathis song "Begin the Beguine."  The record also includes some great instrumentals such as "Quiet Village" by the Ritchie Family and "Touch Me Baby" by The Ultimate. And if your looking for some songs with more punch try out "I Found Love" by Love & Kisses and "Feed The Flame" by Lorraine Johnson. All the songs are well woven together for not stop dance play... in total 13.   Music is the universal language of dance and Johnny V has taken his years of experience to mix and compile his first release. Back in the 70's Johnny spun at clubs in Long Island like Le'tique, Decammerons and Uncle Sams. As the dance music cooled down he took a hiatus to raise his 2 kids but reemerged in the early 90's to share his vinyl collection with the dancers that appreciate the music. Today, Johnny V is the driving force behind the Tuesday hustle night at the IBBG Club and City Scene on Sundays in Long Island. He is one of those DJs that has the rare ability to read the dance floor and make the critical decisions on music selections.

Time Capsule

In the fall of 1976 a new television show, with a 36 state syndication, from New Orleans was introduced called "Get Down." A heavily disco oriented one hour show, it included performances by artists, dance instructions and skits with guests. At the same time, Billboard Magazine, the industry trade for music, had a popular music chart titled "Hot Soul Singles."  The music list began to take shape towards the end of that decade displaying the direction of dance music. It wouldn't be until 1977 that a listing was added entitled "Disco Action."  In 1976 Tom Moulton was busy producing music for many of the hottest artists on the Salsoul label. The original 12 inch vinyl record (the giant single) was introduced by Tom. Legend has it, he wanted to have an acetate of his latest mix pressed but the technician informed him that he had run out of 7" singles (45's). Moulton asked if he could have the song pressed on to a 12" disc. The result was amazing. The tracks on the small singles were too close together to have high quality sound reproduction. His brain storming idea lead to the publication of the first commercial 12" hit song "Ten Percent" by the group Double Exposure. The record became one of the best-selling 12" in the history of dance music. Still in all, Tom found time to write a weekly column for Billboard magazine. The 70's were clearly the renaissance for disco dancing and the music that drove it.
Next week, September 20th, 2004 Tom Moulton will be inducted into the Dance Music Hall Of Fame for all his contributions to the music industry. This new annual awards ceremony will take place in NY giving the artists of dance music their rightful comeuppance. It's unfortunate that it took nearly three decades to honor them.
Here are the songs that graced the top 10 status in Billboard magazine in September of 1976 ...  28 years ago.  As hustle dancing was taking its stride your note Euro-disco hadn't landed yet in the states as funk and R&B dominated the chart.
Enjoy the memories.

1) Shake your Booty - K C and the Sunshine Band
2) Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry
3) Getaway - Earth Wind and Fire
4) Get the Funk Out of My Face - Brothers Johnson
5) Give It Up (Turn It Loose) - Tyrone Davis
6) Low Down - Boz Scags
7) Just To Be Close To You - Commodores with Lionel Ritchie
8) You Should Be Dancing - The Bee Gees
9) Only You Babe - Curtis Mayfield
10) Harvest For the World - Isley Brothers

CDs (compact discs)  - Fact or Myth

Some 22 years ago the music industry began to say good-bye to Vinyl records.
Many record enthusiasts struggled, suffering from a touch of  plastic with-draw. But as the industry told us, the new indestructible compact discs were the wave of the future.
We were informed that CDs would last a life time. Some DJs resisted and fought the good fight but eventually gave in,  making the transition from 12 inch 45s records to  compact discs. Behold, recent articles in Rolling Stone Magazine and Billboard magazine take a different stand.  For four years, the Library of Congress has worked on a project (the first public study ever done) testing the life span of compact discs.
Although the study is not complete it seems we have been mislead by the music industry. The tests done on the CDs included high degrees of temperature (similar to a locked car in summer), soaks in an oven to accelerate the CD aging process....
The study shows that poorly made CDs can deteriorate in as little as five or ten years. Longevity will depend on the quality of the disc and proper care: kept in cases, maintained at room temperature and away from extreme moisture.
It is not uncommon to notice tiny pin pricks on CDs, even when stored properly. In extreme cases they can "resemble a chrome bumper thats been left to rot in a junk yard." If, the studies show that the life span of CDs are not what we originally expected, the Library of Congress will look to change its large CD-Rom collection to another medium. Could this mean the rebirth of our beloved vinyl records?
Don't throw away that old turntable yet.

Letter from the editor

This past weekend, the Spinning W Ranch hosted a fund raiser for our area wheelchair dancers. It was a wonderful evening of dancing, food, merriment and good conversation.... all for a great cause. Wheel chair dancers from the Universal Dance Center, in Collingswood, NJ, performed for the attentive audience. A formation routine, choreographed by Sandi Fortuna, and a Swing dance had the crowd riveted.
(Ray & Melinda and Stephanie &  Josh.) DJ Kenny Arditi provided the music with  late night assistance from dance champion Donna Boyle, spinning the hits.
A raffle was held for a week stay in beautiful Hilton Head, North Carolina. The trip was courtesy of host Wendy Lippincott.
The entire event was a great success due to the caring community of dancers and the many volunteers, but, special thanks to Wendy Lippincott for opening her heart, opening her home and being the catalyst for this important benefit. Wendy epitomizes the highest level of caring & giving and proves what can be accomplished when you have an idea and bring it to life.

Vincent Peruzzi; Kept disco's flames lit
By Emma Stickgold, Globe Correspondent August 15, 2004

During his live shows for Kiss 108 FM radio broadcast live from The Rack on Saturday nights in the 1990s, Vincent R. Peruzzi would pluck listeners from the line for the ladies room and put them on the air. The Quincy native was well known for the antics he added to his show as he spun the disco tunes for three decades at Kiss 108 FM, WNTN, and most recently Star 93.7 FM. On Friday, Mr. Peruzzi died after a yearlong battle with lymphoma. He was 51. Keeping close tabs on the ebb and flow of disco music's popularity, Mr. Peruzzi sneaked disco songs onto his playlist after disco fell out of favor in the music industry, recalled Jerry McKenna, a longtime friend and the program director at Star 93.7.Mr. Peruzzi, known by his on-air nickname, "Disco Vinnie," ardently defended the genre when it came under attack. "Musically, the 1970s got a bad rap, but if you really listen to it, the music from the 1970s sounds a lot better than the stuff that's out now," Peruzzi told the Globe in 1993. "A lot of the stuff that's out now are samples or remakes from songs of the 1970s."On the air, Mr. Peruzzi peppered his shows with references to Boston. "Vinnie was very much a Boston person," McKenna said. "He had an understanding for the neighborhoods and the area, and could speak the language of the listeners."Mr. Peruzzi, who graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in the mid-1970s with a degree in radio communication, was constantly on the prowl for talent playing in local clubs whose songs he believed deserved a national audience. Authorities on the radio industry credit him for boosting the profile of Candi Station, who sang the hit "Young Hearts Run Free," and Vicki Sue Robinson, whose "Turn the Beat Around" became a hit. Mr. Peruzzi got his start at a campus station at UMass-Amherst. He landed a job at WBZ-FM, where he was the host of one of his first shows. He later moved to WEZE, WNTN, and Kiss 108 FM, hosting a 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. show. When disco lost favor, Mr. Peruzzi dropped the "Disco" from his nickname, and for a while was known as "Vinnie" or "Peruzzi. "He switched over to Star 93.7 in the mid-1990s, and hosted his last show there in July. Just as he rode the roller coaster of disco music's popularity, he also took every opportunity he could to ride the roller coasters of the world, taking weeks off to go to Europe or drive his blue van, with a license plate that read "Vin Van," up and down the East Coast to amusements parks. Mr. Peruzzi was also known for being a lobster junkie, buying four or five a week and leaving a few live crustaceans on his counters. Mr. Peruzzi was hardly your typical disc jockey, McKenna said. While many try to outdo one another to land better time slots on the air, Mr. Peruzzi was not competitive in that regard. He worked nights and weekends to create the flexibility to take off on his cross-country adventures, rather than clamor for prime air time. Globe reviews from the late 1970s said he often would get "amiably annoyed at critics who put down disco and is anything but elitist himself." "The name may change from disco to something else, but danceability is the key, and we think we've got it," he told the Globe in 1978. He often went not for the artist, but the songs themselves."But in the final analysis, it's the song, the sound, not the artists that makes a disco hit. Sure, Donna Summer, the Trammps, the Village People, and a few others have almost guaranteed hits, but in other cases, the arranger-producer is the important person, and the group is just a studio group, not a group in the usual rock music sense," he told the Globe. Mr. Peruzzi leaves his mother Gilda (Biagioni) of Quincy; his sisters Angela Cardarelli of Burlington and Linda Zandona of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's Church in Quincy. Interment will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Braintree.

     The Original Dance Contests

Back in the hey day of disco, as the momentum and interest level in dancing grew, the Discotheques jumped on the excitement of holding dance contests. It was a simple equation: contestants + prizes = a packed house. It was a marketing wind fall for organizers.....host a contest, give away a trip, a car or some cold cash, charge an admission fee and your going to draw a thousand enthusiastic dancers.  You could turn the page in any weekend section of the newspaper to view all the contests being held at the area night clubs.
As the disco era continued to soar it gained an abundance of media attention.  Major corporations also wanted to capitalize on it's popularity.... The Playboy Club, Six Flags Great Adventure, Universal Pictures, Sprite, Newport, Bacardi.....all co-operatively sponsored contests giving away extraordinary prizes.

We polled some of the dancers from back in the day to determine their most memorable contests.  I'm sure this will bring back some great memories.

The Star Ship dance club, in NY, held a weekly contest on Wednesdays for trophies and a Wind Jammer cruise. Hector Berrios, of the Dance Dimensions, entered to dance rock....with his partner Pete Martinez, they won first place beating Eddie Vega and Lourdes Jones.  There was also the exciting dance contests held in various clubs thru out the 5 boros of NY. Promoted by Channel 11 and the hit show "Soul Alive," the finalists from each club battled each other in the finals which was then aired on TV.  This was a great Saturday morning television show where Hector and Jackie took first place honors.

The Plum Night Club, in Washington, DC, held a contest every year, for 4 years. The preliminaries started in March and ran through May. It was called the "Annual Disco Duel."  The first year they gave away a new car to the first place winner. Eventually they realized dividing the prizes between several places would bring out more dancers, so they decided to award 8 places.  The competition attracted contestants from as far away as New York to Florida.  In 1978, Craig Yee and Linda Rodriquez from New York won the $2000 First Place prize.  In 1979, Joyce Szili and  Alain Vital, the only amateurs making it to the finals, placed 5th and won the round trip airline tickets to Miami, Florida.

In 1979, Cherry's Discotheque, in Long Island held a spectacular contest billed as the "Worlds Largest Dance Contest"  - Pure dancing - no lifts allowed - 1st Prize - 2 Cherry Red Corvettes.  This contest was advertised extensively on Radio on KTU and promoted throughout the Daily News, Post, etc. - contest ran for over 30 weeks with the weekly winners moving to the semifinals. The Top 5 then danced in the finals.  The place was mobbed and the winner was announced at approx 3am.  Cherries remained packed passed 4:30am with everyone waiting to see the winners and watching them take pictures with one of the Corvettes. Derrick Allen and Lillia won the grand finals.
Playboy International celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Playboy by running an international dance contest. Each state, that had a Playboy club, held a  local competition with NY having the most competitive semifinal - their were over 50 contestants including Eddie Vega, Maria Torres, Billy Fajardo, Ricky Quintana, Lisa Nunziella, Miguel and Annette, the Marolda's......Derrick and Lillia won first place and received $1,500. The next step was to be flown to California (all expenses paid) to represent NY for the $15,000 finals. Couples from all over the US competed including winners from London, France, Japan, South America and the Philippines. Derrick again won and was contracted to perform at the Playboy casino in the Bahamas and in Puerto Rico.

In 1979 the Harvest Moonball Dance Championships, held it's annual competition in New York City. This was the first year they added the hustle to the competition. The event was so big, the preliminaries were held at Roseland Ballroom and the finals were held at the Felt Forum, inside Madison Square Garden. Miquel Marrero and Annette Marrero won first place.

Weekly contests would lead up to a grand finale. One big event took place every summer (1979 - 1985) in Atlantic City, NJ at the Chez Paree, now known as Deju Vue.  The contest was held on Saturday evenings at 3:00AM in the morning and attracted great street and theatrical dance teams. Steven Mitchell remembers the excitement and pack house it would draw.  The finalists won a thousand dollars and were invited to be in the Miss America Pageant float on the boardwalk.

We all know that a dollar, 25 years ago, was worth 5 bucks today, well how about winning $5,000. During the 70's, as the first place winners at Chaz Discotheque, in NY, George Velazquez and Ann Boccino won the big cash prize.
Some of the other popular competitions, with big bucks, were held in Long Island's  Rum-bottoms, the Habitat on Hempsted T-pike and Poor Peters Parlor.

Sabado Gigante - Channel 41 (Univision). This competition was televised and hosted by popular Latin TV personality Don Francisco. Luis Rivera partnered with Stracy Diaz (Latin Madness, Empire, Law & Order). They competed and defeated five other contestants from around the world. Together they shared a winnings of $2,200.

A national competition was held and promoted thru out the dance community.
Phil Gary's competition was a big event with a promoted first place winnings of $10,000. Roseland in NY hosted the area contest.  Susan Marolda recalls the excitement of winning and being flown to Brazil to compete in the finals. Sad to say, Susan and Tony won but.... the $10,000 prize money was never paid out.

In Southern New Jersey, one of the largest discotheques ever built was in Cherry Hill.  The Emerald City held a dance contest sponsored by Playboy Magazine. The winners moved onto the Playboy Club located in Great Gorge for the finals.
Jose' & Marci Gonzalez won the competition and moved onto the next level in that exciting contest.

Regine, held an  Invitational NYC Contest at her famous night Club with the Ten best Couples invited. Tony & Susan Marolda captured first place and were then flown to Paris and performed on a national TV Show. Some of the judges were the late Andy Warhol and Denny Terrio.  The following year Regines hosted the first audition competition for the syndicated television show Dance Fever. The contest drew wonderful dancers including Floyd Chishom & Nellie Cotta, Billy Fajardo and Sandra Rivera, Eddie Vega and Laudes Jones........ first place went to Tony & Susan.
As the winners, they  were flown to Hollywood to appear on the first episode of the first season of Dance Fever.

Debbie Ferro, of the Dance Dimensions, recalls one of the best dance categories for competition, that of the televised show Star Search. In addition to the cash winnings, ($100,000 won by Eddie Vega & Lisa Nunziella), they received tremendous national exposure.  "I know that Lisa used that competition as a stepping stone to a wonderful career in film, television, and ultimately, her own line of dancewear/workout attire and workout videos.

Back in the late 70's, Lisa Sands was the resident dance pro, teaching at many of the area night clubs in Philadelphia, Pa. Every Monday evening she taught lessons at
The Library Night club in  Bala Cynwyd.  As one of the most frequented clubs, auditions for Dance Fever were held at the Library.  The first place winners were flown to Hollywood for the taping of the new TV. Another big competition was held at the popular amusement park Dorney Park in Pennsylvania. The first place winners received five foot high trophies and a cool thousand dollars.

Punk Funk artist Rick James passed away last week. He wrote and sang many hits including "Give It To Me Baby" and "Superfreak."

With all her college degrees behind her, Zulma Rodriquez now has time to enjoy her other passions, one being teaching ballroom and Hustle.. which she will now be doing at "You Should Be Dancing" in NY. She will be working with Robert Vance.

Next spring, Gloria Gaynor will mark 25 years since "I Will Survive" rocked the dance charts. To celebrate there will be a national TV special.

We had an overwhelming response and great feedback from the feature "DJs favorite Gems."  We asked some of the best classic DJ's to share their favorite songs, that needed to be dusted off. Many of those songs brought back great memories for our readers. Now that we've polled the DJs, we are asking you, to send in your favorite song from back in the day... primarily the ones that don't get played today. We will list your name and favorite song in an upcoming feature in DanceTalk®.  Send your choices to Rowenlb22@aol.com by August 25th.

I hope you enjoy part 2 of the Spot Light feature on dance pioneer Jeff Shelley. Just 3 weeks ago, Jeff was inducted into the Hall Of Fame at the World Hustle Dance Championships. If you missed Part 1 of this Spot Light feature, check out the archives at Mark James website,  http://www.mjames.org/ronbess.html

Next week, we visit some of the most popular hustle dance contests, from back in the day, as remembered by the competitors themselves. You don't want to miss this.

Make it a great week,
Ron Bess

      "Spot Light"
   Jeff Shelley
(part 2)

This modern day Fred Astair could do it all. With an extensive background in social dancing, Jeff had wonderful footwork, could execute difficult adagio moves (with his partner/wife Donna) including flips and over head aerial lifts. Dancing was 24/7. Along with his brother Jack Shelley, they partnered with choreographer Lester Wilson to write a book. (Lester helped teach and choreograph routines for John Travolta in the motion picture Saturday Night Fever.) Lester was well known for his "magic footprints," the easy way to learn to dance.  The new book gave instructional insight to the American Hustle, the Rope and other popular dances.
For the last few years the couple was non stop running the New York Hustle dance studios, performing on TV, personal appearances and more... but the climate was changing. Disco and the hustle seemed to be running out of gas. "The sound, the dress were changing, it became different, it was classy up till now," Jeff recalls, the tide was shifting.  Although dancing remained in his heart, the studio success had plummeted by 1986. It was time for a new chapter. The hustle had fallen out of favor. Jeff and Donna would take their dancing and performance on the road, or should I say the high sea.  Recommended by long time friend & dance legend, Francois Szony, the Shelley's were contracted to perform on Cruise lines. The new venture was extremely successful. But their talents were in need elsewhere.  Recruited by, Black Pool Dance Champion, Pierre Dulaine, Jeff and Donna were asked to join the American Ballroom Theater. The Shelley's would replace Pierre and his partner Yvonne. From 1989 to 1994 they became an integral part of the theater and made this their new home. Many professionals find that there are fewer options available for dancers as opposed to actors or recording stars but, to join the American Ballroom theater.. surely is a dance pinnacle. When the theater came to an end, Jeff would then roll out his own show, "Four on the Floor."  It was made up of three thirty minute shows with a singer and non stop entertainment.
Still dedicated to dancing, Jeff teaches in Staten Island, NY at the Fred Astaire studio. He and Donna continue to perform, judge and teach.
From 1972 till 1986.....14 years they championed the first dance studios dedicated to hustle dancing. They warmed our hearts and taught us some cool moves on their weekly appearances on the ever popular dance television show "Soapfactory."
Admired by amateurs and professional alike, Jeff delivered a sophistication in hustle that is seldom seen. For their years of dance and creativity, they were just honored and inducted into the World Hustle Dance Championships Hall Of Fame.
Jeff says it best, "Hustle dancing will never die, the music is still hot."

Letters to the editor

It has been 9 years since I arrived in Houston.... It seems like generations of dancers have come, gone and come back.  I heard someone say that the character of a person can be measured by how that person treats people who can do nothing for them in return. Well, last  weekend in New Jersey at The World Hustle Dance Championships, Diane Nardone exemplified that. The staff at the event, my students, (you) exemplified that in the way Gladys Torres was treated that weekend.  Nobody knows what to do about Gladys's situation, but that weekend everyone who came in contact with her enjoyed every minute.  And from my perspective, Gladys did also.  It was "Thank You, Jesus!" moments.  I would like to thank all my students who contributed to Gladys's finances in going to WHDC.  Thank you, Diane, for the rooms, passes, and staff position for Gladys.  Thank you to the World Hustle Staff for dedicating the dinner show to Gladys and most of all thank you Rick Torres for being there. You all know that none of this had to happen, but it did. Thank you all. This past weekend had many moments.  Through all these moments the character of the Houston presence was admirable.  To all who came to watch, participate, contribute, volunteer time, compete, your joy of this dance hustle, and your love of people who can do nothing for you, inspires me to the next level.  Thank you, Rich and Cathy Rankel who facilitate all that is here in Houston Hustle. My thoughts, my love, let the next year begin,
Tony Pace

Hi Ron, I am sorry I did not have an opportunity to meet you personally on Saturday night, (WHDC) as I was just in for the evening.  But I so enjoyed myself that I plan to attend more Hustle weekends and spend more time at them, so certainly the next time around I will make it a point to introduce myself. I do want to say how thrilled I am that Carl Charles invited me.  As I've told you, I am back into dancing hustle now about four months, after a 20 year hiatus including marriage and children during which time I thought the Hustle was dead.  In frustration with the waltz being pushed at my local studio, I searched the net and found many web sites on hustle.. and signed up for about 10 of them that day.  Carl Charles was not the only person who responded, but he stands out for the speed and warmth with which he reached out to me.  With one click of a mouse, he befriended me, welcomed me back, and helped me to get back into the scene.  So grateful was I that I scheduled a lesson with him sight unseen, thinking I really didn't need one.... he helped me, this time to work on the latest steps I've missed over the years.....I have continued my lessons and friendship with Carl to my great satisfaction; he is a class act in every way...  I am proud that Carl is my teacher.  In my book, Carl is a winner in every way, and I wanted to take an opportunity to share that with you and your readers!
Warm regards,
Lisa Abelson Rabinowitz

Letters to the editor
(Thank you for all the heart felt letters, sharing their sympathy on the passing of Ralph Lew. Here are just a few.)

Dear Ron,
It was a sad day when I heard of Ralph's (Lew) passing. He was truly a great hustle dancer.  I remember how the crowd at Radio City Music Hall went wild with applause when he and his wife danced with the Salsoul Orchestra....this is still one of my best memories.
No words can express the loss of this wonderful and talented man.  I send my condolences and heart-felt sympathies to his family and all who loved him.
In memory of Ralph, I have attached a photo of him and his wife backstage from the night of the concert.  Feel free to use it or pass it around.
God Bless.
Musically,
Vincent Montana Jr. (musician, composer)

I'm deeply saddened by the passing of Ralph Lew. The Dance Dimensions performed in Ralph's revue many times and were also part of the Harvest Moon Ball show, particularly because of Ralph's insistence. I remember him being a great choreoagrapher, a funny, funny man and most of all, a caring person.
He will surely be missed....
Luis Rivera (The Dance Dimensions)

This issue of DanceTalk®, is dedicated in the memory of the late great Ralph Lew.
Our dear friend passed away last week. Married to Lucille for 31 years, together they were an unstoppable team. Ralph, was a house hold name in the world of hustle. He was a mentor to many great dancers and a real entertainer in every sense of the word. He will always have a curtain call. He had the rare ability to light up a room with his energy....but will be best remembered for his caring ways, thoughtful spirit, as he always looked out for his dancers.
Two years ago, at the World Hustle Dance Championships, Ralph was honored with the prestigious Life Time Achievement award. He was surrounded by his friends, family and admirers. (Please see the Spot Light feature below that was published two years ago.) Ralph would have celebrated his birthday this week.
We say, happy birthday Bob- a- Lou.
God Bless you.

Ralph Lew

Disco 101,
Ra-lph Lew' ( Ral' ff  Lou')
He is a mover and shaker in the dance industry.
If he isn't producing music, he is busy running a dance weekend or developing the opening show for a headline act. Welcome to the crazy world of Ralph and Lucile Lew. The quantity of shows and work he received was incredible. For many dancers, he gave them the opportunity to perform multiple times a week, year after year.
In 1951, Ralph joined the army. While with the service in Germany,  he coordinated dance shows. When he returned to the USA, he worked at Grossingers and the Pines Hotels (Catskills, NY) teaching dance lessons and performing. It was like a scene out of "Dirty Dancing."
In 1957 he began teaching for Tony & Lucille at their studio on 57th street. He then set up shop on his own. Make way for the "Ralph Lew Hustle Factory" located in Brooklyn.
In the mid 70's, the NY Daily News dropped their financial support for the "Harvest Moonball" Competition, (the major sponsor). This was by far, the longest running and nationally recognized competition in the country. When it appeared that the HMB competition was down and out, Ralph helped spear head & coordinate the revival of this prestige event. After successfully re-igniting this historical competition, he then recommended adding  the "hustle" to the agenda.
Ralph and Lucille continued to dance with their company and introduced the hustle to the  hundreds of night clubs, studios, country clubs and hotels all over the tri state area. While producing music for Mericana Records, Ralph befriended Vince Montana, Jr. Vince asked Ralph and his dance company to join him  for what would become the famous launching of  "Vince Montana Jr. The Salsoul Orchestra" at Radio City Music Hall. What an event. Ralph brought along the darlings of Hustle, Floyd Chishom and Nelly Cotta.
Over the years, wonderful teams performed with him including:                        Derrick & Lilia, Billy & Sandra, Mark James, Jeff & Donna Shelley, Ray Bogart & Kathy, Kenny Gonzales, Billy & Annabel,  Ron & Lisa, Roberto Pagan, Eddie Vega, Rufus Dustin, Bobby & Lynn, Denise & George Velazquez and the Latin Symbolics.
On any given night they could be opening  for Tony Bennett, Eddie Fisher, Lannie Kazan, Lou Rawls, Jackie Mason, Mark Anthony, Henny Youngman, Sal Richards, Tito Pointe & his Orchestra, India,  Anthony Newly or Celia Cruz.
At 72 years young, Ralph along with his better half Lucille,  throw some of the greatest dance weekends, bar none. This year will mark their 25th anniversary year.
In fact, they were the first to initiate a Hispanic dance weekend, "Salsa in the Catskills."
As a choreographer, he could combine elegant sets with spectacular costumes, wonderful dance routines, ranging from hip hop to dramatic theater arts. As the master of ceremonies he would add  a touch of  humor while the audience became spellbound by his dancers. Always on the cutting edge, Ralph has consistently under promised and over delivered.  We are very grateful for all that he has contributed to our Dance......
Ralph gave many of us the opportunity to perform live on stages thru out the country. He taught us valuable lessons in performing, working a stage, choreography, showmanship, professionalism and the most important lessons of all.... on life.

Spot Light"
Jeff Shelley

The year was 1972. The motion picture 'God Father' was a box office bonanza, Helen Reddy released her classic song "I am Woman" and a guy from Brooklyn opened a dance studio called "New York Hustle."
During the summer of 1966, Jeff Shelley started working for his cousin at a Fred Astaire Dance Studio. But it wasn't until Jeff and his younger brother Jack began hanging out with some girls from a hair salon that they got the impulse to open their own studio. "They turned us onto the hustle." They began to frequent clubs like "The Monistaire" and "Lazardan" in Queens. The year was 1971.  Jeff with his business partner, Jack, decided the time was right.  "New York Hustle "studio was born. Jeff took his Fred Astaire styling and adapted it too the hustle. Their first hustle studio opened in Flushing, Queens in April of 1972.
The following year, Jeff along with Jenny Costa (WKTU Mixmaster) went to audition for the Joe Franklin Television Show. Jenny was one of the top dancers, whom today  is best known for her radio mixmaster contributions in NY. The disco momentum was building and Jeff befriended some of the great dancers of the day. George Velazquez and Craig Yee were some of the most eye catching dancers on the dance scene.
A new club opened that had lines going around the building. The popular "Murray The K" was the host. This club brought some of the most exciting young dancers together. According to Jeff, "This is where I met Floyd (Chishom) and Patty, Billy (Fajardo) and Sandra (Rivera)."
The music and dancing was becoming a life style. Jeff's popularity in the dance world was growing. He was pursued to do a record album which would include instructional dance lessons along with dance songs. The album sales for Columbia House took off. The record was called, "Do The Hustle." In all, three records would be released. The record business was exploding. Over a quarter million records would be sold. Jeff and partner Donna, were pictured on the front cover, which included pictures on the back demonstrating various dance steps.
Jeff and Jack capitalized on the dance phenomena and went main stream launching a radio and TV advertising campaign. They ran as many as 10 radio spots a day on the prime dance stations....WPIX and WBLS. Jack wrote all the scripts and the results were incredible. It was time for another studio as the demand for lessons continued to grow. New York Hustle opened their second location in New Rochelle, NY in 1974. Dance champion, Billy Fajardo came on board to help teach.
The demands and opportunities kept coming. Exhibitions, lessons, running studios, television performances and shows. While at Ipenema disco Jeff befriended dance legend Ralph Lew. This again opened the door for more shows and performances. The following year, Jeff would take the plunge with his dance partner Donna as they walked down the isle. Together they would open 3 additional dance studios and franchise them in Manhattan (at 79th street) in Brooklyn and Staten Island. With the release of the motion picture "Saturday Night Fever" the demand and interest in hustle dancing went off the meter. Jeff would now put his multitasking skills to work as he then signed a two year contract to teach lessons and perform exhibitions on the hugely popular television show "The Soap Factory."  The show was shot right from the popular discotheque "Soap Factory" in Palisades, NJ, which was shown in 69 markets all over the USA.  For the next 2 years, Jeff and Donna would teach viewers how to dance in the privacy of their own living room via TV. The show was hott. Dancers would perform in wild costumes, some on skates and you never knew what to expect. While taping the television show Jeff met the Harvest Moonball champions, Tony and Susan Marolda. This relationship grew as Tony & Susan would eventually teach at one of the NY Hustle studios.
With so much on his plate, the Shelley's took on a new challenge...writing a book.

Stay tuned for Part 2 on the dancing man, Jeff Shelley.

Letter to the Editor

New York City's outdated cabaret laws are at it again. They closed down the Wednesday night swing dance at pier 63. This is the same loophole they used to stop dancing at swing 46, two years ago. Let's put it this way: This is like giving people tickets for jay walking. You must email the mayor below. click on the link and it will take you right to his email and tell him what you think about him closing down swing dance location like pier 63, NYC. We need to accumulate lots of emails in his box for this to be effective. So every email counts, including yours. If we don't take some action, they might close down other locations in NY and then NJ and PA may be next.
