"Spot Light"
Nelly Cotto (Part 2)

Twenty-nine years ago, Nelly Cotto learned to do the hustle, from her sister, while recuperating in the hospital at the age of 13. The year was 1974. Her precision and charm would earn her an allegiance of fans as she "Wowed" the country on the televised "Merv Griffin Show." She was destined to become the premier hustle dancer of our time.
Disco was not quite at its pinnacle in 1980 but Nellie Cotto would eclipse her dancing for six months. She gave birth to her daughter. For the previous two years, Nelly and Floyd Chishom danced on national TV, performed shows, created a dance troop and won some of the most prestigious contests. "I made my living on Dance Contests" explains Nelly. But there were hard feelings between Floyd Chishom and her. Together they had achieved so much but Floyd, the dance giant, was drifting away from dancing.
The "King and Queen of Disco" were no more.
Another popular dancer, in and out of the night clubs, was also searching for a new partner. Eddie Vega was experiencing turmoil with his dance mate. A new partnership was formed. "Eddie was a natural" explained Nelly. It was a seamless transition. The winnings kept coming. They took first place at the United States Ballroom Championships and at Anthony Lee's 1983 "American Star Ball."
Standing only five feet tall and ninety-five pounds, the trophies towered over her. As the competitions became more political they directed their energy towards shows and performing. "In the 80's the USBC's and Harvest Moonball became too political for us."
At an early age Nelly was able to develop incredible dance speed. Her movements had such quickness.... whether she was executing multiple spins or a triple flip in the air. As a dance couple they always pushed the bar higher as they raised the degree of difficulty in their lifts. When they achieved a double it was time to push for a triple.
This set her and her partners ahead of the pack. And to crown the dance, the costumes were always first class, designed by Tony Pena' , they were nothing less then breath taking.. hand made they rivaled those of the Las Vegas show girls.
In 1999, Nelly was honored with the Eddie Vega award. Then in 2000, she was invited to partner with Arte Philips when they performed for Prince Rainer in Monaco. This was another highlight of her life, one she is grateful to Arte for making happen.
In 2001 she entered the national Newport Dance contest. Competing in the finals in Florida, against 200 couples in all forms of dance, she won the $20,000. first place prize with long time friend and dance partner Kenny Gonzales. Kenny and Nelly have been friends since they were both 11 years old. Kenny is her daughters God father.
As we fast forward to 2003, her daughter is now 22 and finishing up college.
Nelly is a young 42 and still living in the Bronx. Next year will mark a 30 year odyssey thru hustle dancing for her. Still graceful and able to fly only where superman dares.... Nelly remains dedicated to her dancing. She still performs but has dedicated the last 15 years of her life to working with kids at "After School Programs" teaching kids to dance. "Kids are humble, no egos they enjoy and appreciate dance" explains Nelly. My goal is to continue working with the kids. I see a number of up coming dance greats but many of them take two classes and think they are great, their aura is all wrong." Nelly is also concerned about the lack of creativity, "today they are just not original." She encourages dance couples to take it to the next level. In her words, "show me a flip with 8 turns."
Nelly just recently under went the knife having gallbladder surgery. But, she is back and on top of her game. At only 104 pounds, she is still air borne ... a true living daredevil. She just finished performing in the show "Sexaholics" along with John Lucasomo.
Over the years, Nelly competed and performed with the finest Hustle dancers in the world. She helped expose the country to the hustle and a level of performing not commonly seen. In a certain way, it helped kill the "Saturday Night Fever" myth -- there is more to hustle dancing then just pointing your finger.

Spot light
"Nelly Cotto"

While recuperating in the hospital her older sister, Dora, visited her to exclaimed "there is a new dance out" where upon she began to teach her the hot new craze, right there in the hospital. She was only 13 years old. She started studying ballet when she was only 3. Nelly Cotto hasn't stopped dancing since. For almost 30 years, Nelly has dazzled audiences all over the world. She was destined to become the premier hustle dancer of our time.
Dancing in the Bronx, NY, Nelly began to partner with Roy as part of the Latin Symbolics. "We would rehearse and practice mambo and hustle but Roy wasn't ready to perform live yet," remembers Nelly. As the hustle originated in the South Bronx, Nelly explains how the girls, back then, did all the movements, "the hustle had no turn patterns yet. The guy just stood there as the girl did all the movements. We would practice and dance at house parties." In 1974, a friend at the Butterfly Discotheque introduced her to Floyd Chishom. He was tall and slick. After performing in the motion film "Roseland," Floyd was searching for a new partner.
The disco dance phenomenon was beginning to explode. A major tri state dance contest was being held. Nine dance clubs, from three different states, would hold preliminary contests. "We won the battle dance contest at the "Sesame Street Club" which meant we went to the finals at the Copacobana in New York City. All nine finalists from the different clubs would compete for the chance of a life time to go to Hollywood and appear on the celebrated Merv Griffin Television show."
Floyd and Nelly won the finals and were flown out to California. "I thought we were just going to appear on the show and be interviewed..... I didn't know we would be competing on TV," recalls Nelly. With only four months rehearsal time together, this young couple, (Nelly was only 16 years old) would shock the country with their incredible style of dance. Dancing to the sound track from the motion picture "Thank God Its Friday" they would compete on television against regional dance champions from all over the USA. Dressed from head to tails in all white, this young NY couple would mesmerize the studio audience with lifts, tricks and hustle dancing never witnessed before on television. This was her defining moment. Dancing to the songs "After Dark" and "Find My Way," Floyd and Nelly would become the "King And Queen Of Disco," (in 1978), as they were awarded framed Gold Records from the motion picture "Thank God It's Friday." The nationally televised Merv Griffin Show received their highest ratings...ever.
After returning back to NY, the team would continue to hoan their skills. A major contest was being promoted and would take place at the world famous "Regines" night club. The winners would be flown to Hollywood to compete on a new TV pilot called "Disco Fever." Nelly and Floyd once again took first place honors and returned to Hollywood to compete on this new developmental television project. As they marched to the stage to tape their segment for the TV show, just minutes before the camera's rolled, Nelly and Floyd were paged to return to the office. "We were told we could not compete. Floyd was in a frenzy," explains Nelly. "Since Merv Griffin was owner of the new TV pilot, the producers felt it was unfair for us to compete since we had just won on the Merv Griffin show a few months earlier. Floyd was so heart broken he complained and they agreed to invite us back to perform on the Merv Griffin show in 1979," explains Nelly. The new pilot was filmed, (without them), it was a hit. The show was later renamed, "Dance Fever." The rest is history.
The dance pioneers would return to NY and would appear on the Merv Griffin Show in a dance special, as agreed upon, when in Los Anglos. With assistance from dance coach and choreographer Rocco, they now had more experience under their belts. The couple would wow the audience and catch the eyes of many producers and organizers. Regine would ask them to fly to Paris to perform at her other night clubs abroad. With their new found celebrity status, Floyd envisioned starting his own dance troop. "The Disco Dance Stars" were born. After winning another contest in Long Island, Floyd and Nelly were entertained by another young couple that performed their style. Ricky Quintana and Lisa Nunziella had the showmanship they were looking for. Along with Danny Llaurado & Carol Famiglio, Eddie Espinosa & Barbara Procopio, the group took shape. The troop was managed by dance wizard Don Denotalia. Don had an extensive movie and dance resume' and was able to book the troop all over the world. In between tours, they stayed active competing in contests. The traditional club contest would run for a number of weeks picking weekly winners. At the finals, all the couples would be invited back to compete head to head to determine the grand prize winner. After winning the finals at Metro 700, Nelly took a hiatus.
She was pregnant.

To be continued

Time Capsule

This month, in 1975, the dance sound was taking a change. Donna Summer had a break away hit single that climbed the charts to number one. This song began to change the course of the pre-disco era. Quite unique for the time, it was a big hit thru out the world and it helped launch her career. Simply put, it broke boundaries. It wasn't the typical three minute song -- it was the entire side of the album. Many radio stations refused to play the song due to the racy lyrics and the sexual moaning put to a disco beat. How times have changed.
Some of these artists, from the disco era, are still putting out hits in 2003. Donna Summer just released her new album "Ordinary Girl" including three new songs. Gloria Gaynor released her smash album "I Wish You Love" earlier in the year with many wonderful dance tunes including "I Never Knew."
These are the songs that rocked the "Disco Action Chart" on Billboard Magazine twenty-eight years ago. Many of these songs still receive regular air play rotation on radio stations heard world wide.

1) Love To Love You Baby - Donna Summer
2) Casanova Brown - Gloria Gaynor
3) I love Music - The O'Jays
4) Fly Robin Fly - Silver Convention
5) Every Beat Of MY Heart - Crown Heights Affair
6) Do The Latin Hustle - Eddie Drennon and the BBS Unlimited
7) Summer Of 42 - Biddu Orchestra
8) Hooked For Life - The Trammps
9) Undecided Love - The Chequers
10) Brazil - Ritchie Family

Dance Fever - Old Vs New

Now that the smoke has cleared, we can look back on last seasons revised dance show, Dance Fever.
Clearly, the only thing similar from the original Merv Griffin Dance Fever series and the new one is..., well, the name.
"Do I like it or do I love it," "Its all good," "I may have to change my panties," were some of the repetitive, over stated responses from the celebrity judges on the new show. The majority of the mail I've read questioned the integrity of the new show based on the judging. The judges diversity appeared to be limited based on their overall dance knowledge. Strong and talented in some areas but lacking in the art of social "partner" dancing. The original Fever of the 80's had requirements including all competitors be a couple -- a male and female. This encouraged partner dancing. As the old show aged the boundaries broadened permitting other styles of dance to be recognized. But in the end, only a couple could win on the original show. The judging was done by celebrities (not necessarily dancers) on the original show. A bad call by a judge was more tolerable since the "judges" were not seen as pros.
The new show has taken on a new look. Understandably, the old formula may not work today? The new show's Grande finale came down to -- a four man clogging group against a four man hip-hop jazz group. Competing in the "reality ratings" show war let us get to know the competitors a bit better.
Can the show survive? Should it be revamped?
Erik Novoa and Laura Cozik were the only couple to perform a hustle on the series this season. New York bred, Erik lends his bullet points on how to turn the show around.
* Established dancers as judges (Debbie Allen, Baryshnikov, Savion Glover). It's amazing what a TV audience can learn if the show is truly fierce and serious about what it presents.
* They should have preliminaries with break dancers against break dancers, partner dancers against partner dancers and solo jazz numbers against solo jazz numbers...only in finals should judges have to judge "apples" against "oranges".
* Lastly, the show can't be just about good looking teenagers....there are a lot of amazing older dancers (over 30 years old) that never made the preliminary cut because of the "older" look.

So, the million dollar question is, will there be a second season?
According to Dance Fever spokes person, Brenda Lowry, "The final show attracted two million viewers." Considering that this is cable TV, this is quite favorable ratings. The format may change but the show is working out some kinks and plans to return next summer.
Stay tuned.

Spot light
"Kristine W"

On September 11, 2001, as we sat glued to our televisions, watching in horror, as the USA was under attack, Kristine was undergoing her own fight. On 9-11, she was having a stem cell transplant. And like the mighty USA, she is back and "Flying Again." Last week marked the release of her newest CD on Tommy Boy records. With six straight # 1 Billboard accredited hits to her name, this is her newest project since being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
During the 90's she rocked the dance floors with her hits like "One More Try," "Land Of the Living," "Some Lovin and 'Stronger."
With the release of her new CD, she spoke with me about her inspirations.
Kristine grew up listening to various styles of music but was driven by the vocals of Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Blondie and Al Jaerur. "I loved theses great artists and anyone else that was glamorous." Growing up she studied tap dancing and ballet and incorporates various styles of dance into her show including hip hop. "Its very important to take the temperature of what the people are doing in the clubs. It is vital for me to stay in contact with the dance scene. When writing her songs, 10 of the 12 tracks she penned, she wants the beat to go with the lyrics, "I want it to fit the dance of today." Kristine has just completed the video for the title track, "Fly Again."
This song carries the good news of her victory now that she is in remission.
She has dedicated the new album to all the brave souls that have fought the cancer battle. In 2001, as she performed the songs from her album "Stronger," she was actually getting weaker. During her treatment stage she watched so many others battle cancer but..... came up short. While going thru chemotherapy and losing her hair, she was inspired to write songs.
Today she listens to jazz and dance music coming out of Europe. "Rap music works when it's musical and mixed. Straight rap is harder to stay with too long."
Her new CD, "Fly Again," will have you soaring. Her personal favorite cut is "The Wonder Of It All," but the first release will be the title track. Her vocals combine the range of Cher with the xcitement of Madonna. The new album includes an All Star team of producers that have previously worked with Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Minogue, Deborah Cox, Dirty Vegas .....
The new album is full of great tunes led by "I'll Be Your Light" and my personal favorite "Save My Soul."
Kristine resides in Las Vegas with her family and pre schoolers. She has performed in Vegas for over a decade. In 1995 the "Night Club" in the Hilton Hotel / Casino was built for her show. She performed there for the next three years with her band, four dancers and three back ups.
Grateful to over come her battle and able to still perform, Kristine states, "with God's help, a whole lot of faith and the prayers of family and friends, I can tell you that it is possible to Fly Again."
With a fresh new album and a greater appreciation for life, she should be given a P. H. D. for will power. She just appeared performed at the 2003 Angel Ball, made an appearance on CNN and Fox News and will be performing thru out the US.
I anticipate her new album "flying" up the dance charts.

Press Release: Vincent Montana, Jr in Paris & Milan

From the 4th to the 14th October, Vincent Montana, Jr. was in Paris, with a quick overnight in Milan. He was there to promote the latest Philly Sound Works Catalogue compilation entitled "Heavy Vibes" on the Italian Label Temposphere. The double CD and triple vinyl includes such tracks as Heavy Vibes, It Looks Like Love, Let Me Work on You, South Soul Party Mix, What Happened To The Music and Who Needs Enemies to name a few. It is beautifully packaged and contains a 28 page booklet with very informative liner notes on his life and career in music and many "never seen before" photographs. There were two live radio interviews with a French station "Generation" and various interviews with local music magazines, along with a grand opening of a record store called "One Way". Rocco Pandiani, from Temposphere (a dear friend) made sure that Vincent was well looked after.
On the 8th October, Vincent played a live "Vibe Jam" concert to recorded tracks at "Café Real" in Milan, Italy to a very enthusiastic audience of various age groups - the young, up and coming DJ's that are getting turned on to his music 2nd time around and the people that know him well from the Salsoul days. He started the show with what other than "The Godfather" - just vibes, so the people could get a good feel for the sound of the Vibraharp. From there he went on to play "I Wish You Love" from his jazz album "This One's For You". Next was "Vibe Jam" which is an uptempo dance tune with a rhythm guitar and melodic strings. Then came "It Looks Like Love" followed by "Heavy Vibes". The next song, dedicated to Christiano Spiller who Vincent invited for dinner and the show was "GrooveJet (If This Ain't Love)". This song was sampled from the original Carole Williams hit "Love Is You" (Salsoul) by Spiller and became a #1 hit in London, and went on to take Europe by storm. Then he slowed it down with "For All We Know" one of Vincent's favorite jazz songs, only to pick it up again and bring the house down with his 9 minute vibe version of "Disco Inferno". Vincent was escorted off the stage by his daughter, Eileen (who accompanied him on the trip). When collecting the mallets and sheet music - in this moment 4 of the 5 mallets were stolen! Someone actually stole Vince Montana, Jr.'s mallets!!!! He took it very well, considering these mallets were 30 years old and played on every hit song that came out of Philadelphia and of course, the Salsoul classics. Eileen figured she'd pay a heavy price to get her father's mallets back on Ebay!!! The show was recorded on video and will be used to promote possible future concerts throughout Europe.
To end a nice story even nicer, Rocco Pandiani managed to track down and recover 3 of the 4 stolen mallets. The last one was sent priority mail from Italy. He's got his mallets back!!!! LOOK OUT!

Hooked On Hustle - Review

Believe the hype, "Hooked on Hustle" delivered. What an exciting night of dancing at Dancesport 101, in Philadelphia, for the third installment of HOH.
Shannon Johnson packed the house. DJ Mark mixed classic hustle songs with a dab of contemporary dance grooves. Complimentary lessons were provided earlier in the evening by Ernesto Diaz, Andre' Phelps and Brian Gallagher. The dancing was non stop all night. To kick things off the large crowd was treated to a Pro am showcase exhibition. Professional champion, Silvana Gallagher performed with Sam Habit to an entertaining hustle.
Later in the evening an open Jack and Jill contest was held. For a twist, the judging was conducted by the audience. Nine couples went head to head and the crowd responded selecting the finalists. First place honors went to Tran and Hyunki and 2nd place went to Stanley and Pat. Both couples received attractive trophies.
Then, yours truly introduced the "Philly 15 Seconds Of Fame." This was the opportunity for singles, couples or groups to do a 15 second improv -- showing the audience their best stuff. Not knowing what to expect the crowd embraced the opportunity as they treated us to their hott dance moves. To help set the tempo, Alex and Debbie showed us a WCS to set the mood. Carl Charles then hopped in to do a hustle with Debbie which was immediately followed by Brian Gallagher leading both Silvana and Debbie. Jeff and Jenn Gessner, ( mommy-to-be), took center stage showing the crowd some leaps and lifts. Everyone got into the rhythm. Other dancers were anxious to show us their 15 seconds. Ron Troy and CK, Chris Bates and Trisha Caballero and, not be out done, George Azpuru lead Brian Gallagher. Everyone was given the opportunity to shine and be a star but only one dance act was selected as the winners. Congratulations to our teenage contestants, Jaclyn Kalish and Kristine Davidson. I'm sure they will enjoy their trophies.

Many pros were on hand to show their support coming as far away as Queens, NY, Long Island, Northern NJ, Delaware and Washington, DC. Carl Charles, Debbie Tuttle, Alex, Chris Bates, Silvana Gallagher, Donna Boyle, Beth Darchi, Artie Phillips, Andre Phelps, George Azpuru, Ernesto Diaz, DJ Mark, Brian Gallagher, Debbie Ferro, Joe Kerner, Kenny Arditi...
With the great attendance and support we look forward to another chapter of Hooked On Hustle.

From Andre' Pheleps
(We celebrated his birthday last week at Michael's Cafe in Pa.)

I just want to say thank you to all who showed up to make my 50th birthday special.
It was wonderful to see all those ladies & Steve lined up for my birthday dance.
Thank You all again.

"Hooked On Hustle"

Andy Warhol coined the saying, 'everyone gets their 15 seconds of fame.' The question I propose is, do folks know when their time has come? Well, your time has come. This coming weekend, "Hooked On Hustle" returns to Philadelphia for a third installment. We will be introducing to the hustle dancers their chance to strut their thing in the first "Philly 15 seconds of Fame." This permits everyone the chance to show us their stuff -- beginners, amateurs, Pro-Ams, pros... Its kinda like the Gong Show without the gong.
Shannon Johnson has assembled some of the best dancers in the tri-state area. Come on out for one night of fun dancing, lessons, exhibitions and surprises. Many area dance pros will be in the house which will make this a night of champions. Join, George Azpuru, Chris Bates, Donna Boyle, Brian Gallagher, Silvana Gallagher, Susan Marolda, Andre Phelps, Debbie Tuttle (and Alex)......
Shannon is stressing the point of growing the hustle by attracting new blood. I commend her for reaching out to the young, old and in between. At Dancesport 101, there will be pure hustle downstairs with DJ Mark (from Michael's). Music requests can be made upstairs in the California Mix room (bring your favorite CD -- as this ensures that your request can be played).
There will be a Jack & Jill dance contest with 1st and 2nd prize and a first prize to the Philly 15 Seconds of Fame winner(s). The audience's (noise level) will be the judge.
All of this for a low door fee or save buying online through Paypal at www.HookedOnHustle.com 20-33% savings. $15 at the door $12 online OR 2 or more tickets purchased on the same transaction is JUST $10 each. Get there early and take advantage of all that is offered and dance the night away.
For you Hard-core Baseball fans, there will be a TV on for your viewing pleasure.

Here is a list of hott new dance music. **Keep in mind, many of these songs have been remixed for the ultimate dance beat. The song version on the record may differ in tempo from the remix. Check to make sure which rendition your listening too.

Letter to the Editor

Hey Ron,
I really enjoy your news letter........ As a dancer and part time disc jockey I would like to share my view point with your readers. Most of my DJing work is geared towards functions, wedding, mitzvahs, sweet 16s. The call of music tends to be current and contemporary dance. The common dance-style song today ranges from 135 to 140 beats- per- minute. In other words, the dance that you refer to as the hustle is now considered an 'oldies dance'. I frequently play deep drum mixed house music and younger kids will free-style - just the same - many will do a raw form of the huslte. I'm convinced a new off shoot of hustle kids can be formed if you play the music of the day. For heaven..... sakes , I hate to think that I'm dancing to the 'oldies".
Thanks Ron, great newsletter,
STEVE

Happy Birthday wishes to Kathy Austin, Dave Muzii and Patty McConnell.

Congratulations to Mike Alcorn and Diane DiChiara. On September 20, Mike asked Diane for her hand in marriage. Diane has competed with Raye Avery in Houston at the "Waltz Across Texas," "The Texas Classic" & " Chany's Dance Contest". The Houston "Hustle" community wishes them the best of luck and a long happy life together. A date has not yet been set.

For a magical dance party, read about George Azpuru's Halloween extravaganza below. George is combining magicians, belly dancers and dance music into one big party on October 31st in Manhattan.

Michelle Maniscalco, 22-year-old Runnemede, NJ resident, was the only female among four finalists on MTV's "Wade Robson Project." Michelle is a Philadelphia Eagles football cheerleader and dancer at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. She was one of 80 dancers picked among thousands who showed up for auditions held in eight major cities. The finals were yesterday. The dancer with the most votes received $10,000 worth of clothes and $100,000 in cash. Michelle was first runner up.

Donna Summer's new book, "Ordinary Girl" goes on sale today. Her new CD is also in record stores now, "The Journey." The CD includes three new songs. She will be signing her book today in Manhattan at Borders Book Store.

I had the honor of interviewing Cerrone, the French music wiz, via a translator.
I hope you enjoy part 2, of my 'one on one' interview that I conducted.

Make it a great week,
Ron

Cerrone (Part 2)

Every Sunday night, when you tune into the "Bobby Gerard's" radio show in Florida, your sure to be treated to a Cerrone classic. It's virtually impossible to discuss the disco era and not bring his name up.
Jean Marc Cerrone, unmistakably exceeded his 15 minutes of fame. During the 70', 80's and 90's he released some of the most moving, exciting dance music of the era. His music was created to dance too. And thats what we did. "SuperNature," "Love In C Minor," "Cerrone's Paradise," "Give Me Love," "Love Is Here" ..... had us hustle dancing till the wee hours of the morning. Some of his songs were the entire side of an album, creating elaborate orchestration with the high beat of the bass drum. After an eight year hiatus -- he is back. With many new projects on the way he is especially proud to watch his son, Greg's musical influences unfold. As far as he is concerned, "the music world needs to keep unfolding naturally, i.e., composers and song writers should remain as honest as can be towards themselves in order to best translate society's day to day expressions." Music is, to Cerrone, a vehicle like no other which can best assemble a crowd to reach a heartfelt symbiosis. Music speaks to the body and cools the mind as it reaches higher temperatures through movement, gestures and most of all dancing."
As a big fan of Cerrone growing up, It concerns me that the music in the US is dominated by Rap. The dance music being produced is not finding it's way to the air waves. But that is not the case in most other nations. It seems other countries still enjoy dance music. Cerrone states, "other countries truly do enjoy the orchestrations brought upon by Dance music. The US’s west coast is reopening the Dance drawers as RAP takes on different turns (necessary ones) in the plight of its fate. "RAP is a necessary tool for the American listener who finds himself bound to the ‘street’ experience and the right of speech. The US expresses quite some freedom through RAP, probably to sit in the front seat for quite a while, but look in the rear view mirror! and you'll see Dance (music) moving up in no time," expresses Cerrone.
In January, 2003, Cerrone performed live at the OLYMPIA of Paris, "An unforgettable night," signed Cerrone. "The Olympia was at full capacity! Until dawn the public danced to the rhythm and sound of electro-tribal-dance," a musical imprint unique to Cerrone. With international guest stars such as Nile Rodgers from Chic, DJ Spiller (Groove Jet) Fo, Mandel Turner, and DJ Mousse, Cerrone brought the French Touch yet one significant step forward. Accompanied by his percussionists Kongas and DJ Greg Cerrone on the turntables, "Hysteria" is the first album released by Cerrone since his eight years of silence. The new album marks his 16th album of his career. Cerrone has again collaborated with Bob Sinclar, " the king of the dance floor The cover artwork for the new album is classic Cerrone, full of provocation. "Hysteria" includes 12 new original tracks, along with Cerrone's closest collaborators; Don Ray (Garden Of Love fame), Nile Rodgers from 'Chic,' Bob Mitchell, the "Cerrone Angels" and his son Greg Cerrone.
This month look for the new release: Cerrone feat. Eve Angeli
English Version : "Love on the Dance Floor"
We welcome Cerrone back to the forefront of the dance music scene. We look to him for more heart pounding music to fill our lives with dance.

Letter to the editor

Ron,
In response to your article, "can you meet MR or MISS right in the discotheque & will it last. Well my husband & I are living proof of that. We met 21 years ago in ROSELAND, he proposed to me 1 year later & we got married 4 years later. (thru the 4 years, we continue to dance) and the best part after 15 years of marriage, I got pregnant on one of our vacation trips on a dance convention. We are now blessed with a 2 year old beautiful boy that loves to dance, and althought it is a very expensive night, between hiring a babysitter & other evening expenses, we go out every Tuesday night & still dance as we just met for the first time.

Still Dancing Raymond & Karen Velez

A Letter from Ettie Kurtz (Ettie suffered the loss of her youngest daughter Jill
just three weeks ago)

We want to thank everyone for all the love and support they have extended to us during this difficult time. I cannot tell you, and may you never know, of the tragedy and devastation of losing your child. It is unlike anything you could imagine.
Thank you everyone for your beautiful flowers, baskets, cards, gifts, visits, and phone calls. The food for the Shiva was so greatly appreciated by all.
I am still trying to tie up all of Jill's affairs. I have bad days and worse days. No good days yet. I hope they will come...
I'm not up to writing everyone yet a personal thank you and I hope everyone will forgive me for now. Phone calls are especially hard - I can't seem to get the words out.
I hope to see everyone soon - we may try to go away somewhere for a few days just to get our minds in a different place...
Thank you all again.
Love to everyone

Editorial
"Making the connection"

I was pleased to hear another couple from the dance community recently became engaged to be married. Over the last year, a number of couples have become engaged that have met, via the dance floor.
HMMMMM, who said you can't meet Mr. or Miss Right at the Discotheque?
Actually, a number of these couples have met at dance socials, competitions and at night clubs.
The Myth has always been -- you can't meet the right person at a club?
Here is the misnomer -- meeting at the discoteque/night club for a special night of social dancing is not the same as hitting the local bar scene looking for a Hotty.
There is quite a difference. Lets not confuse meeting a person with similar interests and hobbies at a dance function with hanging out at a club on retread night -- lurking for a one night stand.
Many of the Dance conventions / competitions create the right environment to meet interesting folks with similar interests. As many have said over the years, we tend to meet the right person when we're not really on the hunt. Hence, your out for a night of intense dancing, taking part in a group dance class (made up of males and females) with the primary goal of shaking your groove thang. This creates the perfect climate to meet that special person. Your mind is set on dancing and not on the prowl. Presto, you meet that special individual. Well, maybe not that easy but looking at the statistics, many of our fellow dancers (to many to list) have met and developed relationships dancing, dating and even marriage.
In many cases, before we developed the dance bug, the real attraction to dance was a journey to meet people. As one becomes more passionate about dancing our path takes on new directions.
But, there is a flip side. Once established, can a relationship over come the pressures created from dancing? Can a "dance couple" sustain that magic?
That all depends on the people. Dance, like everything else has a time and place. Keeping dance in perspective is vital. For a professional couple, the stress can be lethal. Many have struggled to keep the professional dance side separated from the personal side. Since social dancing is dependent on two. Dancing can create pressure on each partner to "pull their weight." The competitive circuit can take its toll on a relationship. Hopefully that relationship has a strong foundation.
A relationship limited to just one dynamic, like dance, can create a lopsided base. For the non competitive dancer, there is greater opportunity to grow the relationship in and outside of dancing. The focus is not restricted to dancing. Clearly one can meet great people thru dancing. Relationships can be created. The sixty-thousand dollar question is......... will it last?

(DanceTalk® will take a closer looker at that in the near future)

Letters to the Editor
(Nino Torre on WKTU radio in NY)

Ron - I am writing in response to the performance by Nino Torre on KTU Sunday night. For those of you that did not have the pleasure of hearing it, Nino definitely kicked it up a notch from 8:00 to 9:00pm with Joe Causi. He played a stupendous mix of 70's music that he really hit all the favorites including one of my favorites "Date with the rain". He did a tremendous and professional job. The phones were ringing off the hook at the station commending the selection of music that he played. They also announced on the radio the details of the upcoming "Hustle Dance Cruise" in February. Just wanted to say "Hats off" to Nino Torre for a great job done. I hope they give him the opportunity to play again.

Thanks
Silvia

Popular songs like "Addicted to Love" and "Simply Irresistible" made him an MTV icon. He died of a heart attack at the young age of 54. Donald O'connor was a true song and dance man. He performed on broadway and on the silver screen. "Make Em Laugh" and his unforgettable performance in "Singin In the Rain." He leaves us at the age of 78.

Our condolences to Celeste Pfefferle. Urban J. Pfefferle, her father, passed away last Monday. He was very active and would have turned 80 years old this week. We send our sympathy to Celeste, Keith Gussoni and their families.

Time Capsule

A new television dance show would debut later in the month. The year was 1976.
"Get Down" would air in the fall. The format included music, skits, dance instructions, live performances by R&B and disco groups. Taped in New Orleans on WVUE -TV, the one hour show was seen in NY, LA, Chicago, Phila, Boston, Detroit, Wash, Miami and 28 other cities. Disco was starting to gain momentum. The dances on the show ranged from line dancing, free style and the introduction of the hustle.
The music was classified as "Disco" but took on various styles of R& B.
Barry white conducted a full piece orchestra - creating a classical disco sound, while K.C. and the Sunshine Band created a happy dance music with an island flavor. These different styles were at opposite ends of the spectrum. KC didn't utilize strings for a symphonic sound but favored the horn sections. Simply put, it was rocking, fun, a bit repetitious with lots of sexual innuendo's. KC said, "there were calls to white America to loosen up, to shake shake shake its booty." This new sound appealed to those that didn't connect with the heavy political rock sound of the 60's and early 70s. The 60's music was for your head while the 70's became music for your feet. Disco represented everything that had been repressed from the hard rock sound. Even some of the new high tech motion pictures adopted disco soundtracks - Star Wars, Close Encounters....The club scene grew starting in the urban areas then spreading to the burbs. New York became the hub with neon clubs like Xenon, New York New York, Studio 54, Regines, Infinities. Not to be out done, Las Vegas had Jubilation (owned by Paul Anka), Civic Theater Disco in New Orleans, Scaramouche in Miami, Zorine's in Chicago, The Daisy in Hollywood, Numbers in DC, Pips in LA, The Library in Philly and this little club in Brooklyn called Odyssey 2001, later used for the filming of "Saturday Night Fever." It didn't take long for things to shift. Disco became the victim of its own success or should I say "excess." The clubs and music became watered down. The quality... sank. With discotheques everywhere, every business person/opportunist jumped on the disco band wagon. exploiting the financial rewards, The same words used to dump on disco were also directed at gay men. (The phrase `disco sucks' indicates a homophobic attack.) With all the white three piece suits being sold, the long lines to get into the 'chic' clubs, who could imagine that this momentum would turn 360 degrees creating such a back lash?

Billboard Magazine put together a special survey of the Hot Soul Singles back in September of 1976. Here is a list of those entries debuting on the top 100 list. This goes back 27 years ago. Where were you?

* My Sweet Summer Suite - Love Unlimited Orchestra
* Energy to Burn - BT Express
* Run To Me - Candi Staton
* You Don't Have to Be A Star (to be in my show) Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr
* Bless My Soul - Skip Mahoney & the Casuals
* Because I Love You Girl - Stylistics
* Teach Me - Blue Magic
* Feel Like Makin' Love - Millie Jackson
* Happy Being Lonely - Chi-Lites
* Jump - Aretha Franklin
* Funky Music - Luther Vandross
* Baby I'm Gonna Love You - Phyllis Hyman
* Undisco Kid - Funkadelic
* Let Him Go - First Choice

Gladys 50th Birthday party - review

In honor of Gladys Torres 50th birthday, many out of town guests descended on Texas to help her celebrate. She was absolutely floored when she saw them. She screamed and laughed for 3 minutes. They all came out to Chayns and danced until 1:30 am. Gladys was in heaven as she took the floor for a Spot Light Hustle dance. Gladys looks great and she is sporting a new Halle Berry haircut look.
There were about 200 friends in attendance. Many special guests came in from out-of-town including: Keith Gussoni (New Orleans), Artie Phillips (NY) Debra Hampton (LA) Beth Darchi (NY) Celeste Pfefferle (New Orleans) Steve Neeren (NY)
Punkin Habet (New Orleans & DC) Scott & Rita Taylor (New Orleans)
And of course, Gladys' own children, Rico (NY) & Liani (Boston). I'd also like to recognize two of our own Houston dance instructors who were also there: Sheryl Forrester-Guidry and Carla Lopez. Gladys made her grand entrance just before 3PM. She had SOoooo many hugs...it took her over half an hour to hug everyone. You know she REALLY appreciates and needs those hugs and the love it conveys from
everyone. Even after going through her treatments over the past several weeks,
Gladys was still able to "best" the best by dancing her BIRTHDAY DANCE
continuously through 2 or 3 songs, and for about 10 minutes straight, cut-in" style. It was a blast and a special treat to watch her dance with the "Cream of the crop" in Hustle. Peter Van Nifterik ("Peter V.") was a most excellent DJ! He kept the party jammin all afternoon with great music! We know that it must have been physically demanding on Gladys; but she was not to be outdone--she wore everybody out. And guess what? After a short break, she was ready for more! That's our Gladys--like the Energizer bunny. Gladys was delighted when Patty, Brandy, Deborah & Cheryl presented her with a "Big-50" birthday cake and a big slice of birthday watermelon. Gladys, herself, gave a "thank you" speech to all her friends (only needing occasional interjections by her husband, Rick.) Rick also thanked everyone for the support they have given him as well, over the last two months. He really appreciates it. She really has made surprising progress in recovering from the surgery several weeks ago. (It was Fri, 25 Jul 2003.) Her speech has improved tremendously, along with her ability to read; and she is coping with the radiation & chemo better than most expected--certainly enough to party and dance for over 4 hours straight! That was incredible.) Gladys looks fit, as usual. Rick says that they will go back in for a MRI in about a month to see how effective the treatments have been. (Apparently, they must wait because an early MRI would be unreliable.) Gladys made it clear to us that she is still in God's hands, so please keep her in your prayers. Special thanks goes out to Deborah Perreault and Sherry & Larry Oistad for organizing such a great party!! I know that many people helped--more than I know. Gladys had an AWESOME 50th birthday!
(Thanks to Mike Mason and Raye Avery for this report.)

Happy birthday wishes to Natalie Petosa, Sunny Leigh and Sue Edelstein.

I hope this letter finds everyone free from the disruptions of Hurricane Isabel.
I just returned from an amazing Las Vegas trip. What a great city. I had the opportunity to chat with entertainer, Carmen Electra. The first thing I asked, "would Dance Fever be coming back for another season?" She responded, "I'm pretty sure it is." Stay tuned. Las Vegas is the fastest growing city in the US. As the population grows so does the interest in learning the Hustle. Julia St. Marie, (a former NYer), has had additional hustle classes to accommodate the renewed interest in Vegas. For info contact Julia or her partner Donnie. Julia (702) 791-1094, stjulia001@yahoo.com Donnie (702) 379-4660.

Dance Floor Etiquette (Part 2)

Here is the second installment of a comprehensive list of tips to utilize on the "crowded" dance floor. Bill Poulter, is a seasoned veteran. He has years of competitive dancing and teaching under his belt and was kind enough to share with us this in-depth look at sharing the dance floor.
We continue, with his insight on how to lead - while not abusing usage of the dance area, dance floor protocol and how to avoid a dance floor accident / spill.
Enjoy, RB

2) WHAT TO LEAD -- DANCE TO THE LEVEL OF YOUR PARTNER
Any time I take the floor with a new partner I start off leading basics. This gives us a chance to establish connection and to evaluate each others ability, relative to our own. Followers, keep in mind that HE may not be as experienced as you----let him lead you through a few things before you decided to dazzle him with "101 Syncopations" , OK? Beginning leaders are just as easily intimidated as beginning followers. As my comfort level goes up, so will the difficulty level of my leads. Finally, I will only throw in one or two of my "big dog" moves in a given dance--the thinking here is that she'll want to come back for more, and I'll have more to give her, not more of the same! Also under this heading, let me say that if you've tried to lead something and she's not following it, move on to something else and show her that move after the dance (off the floor). You should never force a partner through a move, and we all know the rule about teaching on the dancefloor, right??
What do you do when you find that your partner is not at your level? Remember: this is social dancing! Make it fun--dance to the level of your partner---your responsibility is not to make yourself look good; it is to make your partner look good! Keep it clean, keep a smile on your face, and thank them after the dance--------you never know, you might just inspire that person to want to get better! Criticize them, roll your eyes, and intimidate them-----you'll just make sure they don't come back again and the dance community loses another friend!

3) CROWDED DANCEFLOOR - RIGHT OF WAY
First of all, understand that you don't have to dance every dance! Rather than trying to wedge yourself into a couple of squares on that parquet floor and making everyone (including yourself) miserable, suggest to your partner that you sit one out together and be one of the first on the floor for the next one. Hey, it even gives you a chance to socialize and get to know someone a little better!
As for sharing floorspace, it is always up to the more experienced dancers to keep out of the way of the less experienced dancer, who may be less familiar with rules of the flow of traffic (it's also a mark of good floorcraft!). A crowded dance floor is not the place to be showing off your new routine, or the latest "fancy step sequence". Additionally, traveling sequences are not a good idea on a crowded floor, as it sets in motion a whole unpredictable chain of events as all the other couples try to adjust to your floor-hogging! Keep it tight!

4) FLOORCRAFT
By definition: the ability to move where you want on the dance floor without interfering with others on the floor, while retaining your own enjoyment.
Leaders: Look before you lead!! Perhaps my biggest pet peeve is the number of leaders I see who consistently fail to look ahead to where they're going, or more precisely, asking their follower to go. They're so wrapped up in leading that "big dog" move they just learned, that they give no thought whatsoever to the conditions on the floor at the time! Before you know it----WHAM (and it's usually their follower who pays the price!!) Remember, our first objective in social dancing is to get through the dance safely, followed by making the dance fun for our partners. The last time I checked, there isn't a follower alive who was slung (usually backwards) into another quickly moving human being, only to thank her partner and beg for more! If avoiding a collision means you have to adjust your pattern, abort a turn, "short-arm" your connection, etc., so be it! Likewise, followers, just because he leads it, doesn't mean you have to follow it. If you see tragedy looming on the horizon, abort! The dance police will not come out and whisk you off the floor and who knows, you might even end up creating a new syncopation!?
Final tip --- chivalry is not dead! If you see the makings of an unavoidable collision, take your partner into your arms and shield her with your body so that you take the brunt of the collision!
I hope these tips are of some help on what are becoming increasingly crowded dance floors!
Thanks,
Bill Poulter

Hallelujah, we've had six whole days without any sickness or nausea.  Mom is
looking better than ever and her spirits are soaring.  Her hair is cut incredibly short, but she looks Halle Berry beautiful.  Her last day of chemo is September 24th and her last day of radiation is September 25th, right around the corner.  She'll get four weeks off with no treatment except for the occasional speech therapy session.  After those four weeks she'll be given a new MRI to determine how things look.  If everything looks the same that's good, and if everything is gone, that's even better.  We'll find out on 10/22 when she sees  the doctor.  I'll be living back in Boston at the point so her friend Mary Alack will be joining her at the doctor's office to hear the news. I'm heading out to Boston again this weekend which will give my parents the
opportunity for some quality alone time:)  They're going to the Four Seasons
for a "Romantic Rendezvous"  weekend.  I'm sure it'll be great.
The prayers are working so keep them coming.

Take care,
Liani

Your going to love this. With some aggressive prodding, I was able to gain some insight, on dance floor etiquette. Bill Poulter has written a well thought out view on sharing the dance floor and ways to go home unscaved from injures (which can occur on the social dance floor). Thanks to Bill for his directness and wonderful sense of humor.

Make it a great week,
Ron

Dance Floor Etiquette (Part 1)

Here is the first of a 2 part comprehensive list of tips to utilize on the "crowded" dance floor. Special thanks to seasoned pro, Bill Poulter. With years of competitive dancing and teaching under his belt, Bill was kind enough to share his perspective on how to make the entire dance engagement an enjoyable one for both the leader and follower....oh yea, and for those around you.
Enjoy, RB

I'm writing in response to a number of requests I've had (usually, from "abused" followers) to address the issue of dancefloor etiquette and floorcraft in the social dance setting. I don't think there's one of us who doesn't know that feeling of coming home from a night at the local dance club feeling like a human pinball machine, having been bounced from one end of the floor to the other by every Tom, Dick & Harriet who, totally oblivious to the fact there is anyone else on the floor, was out to show the whole club their new "cross-body lead with quadruple somersault to inside roll and full gainer with a half-twist to a layout", which they'd just learned as the move of the week at the local dance! Hey followers, tell me if this sounds familiar------you finally get up the nerve to ask that really good leader for a dance and he a) proceeds to quiz you on your level of experience and expertise for 3 minutes or until the song is over, whichever comes first, b) after you've told him you're a beginner and asked him to go easy with you, he proceeds to turn and twist you into a pretzel in the very first move, following that up by unleashing his entire repertoire of "moves of the week" (and oh, aren't you impressed with him?!), c) gives you an unsolicited private lesson in the middle of the dance floor, telling you everything you did wrong* (*don't tell him, but it's probably the result of a faulty lead!), when all you wanted was a pleasant 3-minute experience, or d) all of the above! Finally, and this one goes both ways----it's one thing to be scanning the floor looking for potential collision risks; it's another entirely to dance with someone whose eyes are staring up at the ceiling (usually accompanied by gum-crackling)! or worse yet, they're looking around for their next partner (or just to check out how many people are noticing how wonderful a dancer they are)! Likewise, followers, I've had my share of finger-pokes in the eye from some woefully errant arm-styling, been tripped up and kicked by some of the most beautifully executed, though ill-advised ronde's and sweeps, and had to remind my share of partners that they were dancing with me, not their image in the mirror.

For those that have asked, and in the hopes that some of these people described above (and yes, they ARE out there!) may read this and see themselves, here is a list of some tips on general dance floorcraft and etiquette. I hope some might find them helpful:
1) TEACHING ON THE DANCE FLOOR -- one word says it all ---- DON'T!
There is a time and place for teaching, and it IS NOT in the middle of a social dance floor----even when requested! Our role as a social dance partner is to make each dance an enjoyable 3-minute relationship. It is SOCIAL DANCING----you're not out there to prove how wonderful you are, how great you look, or how much better you are than them. To offer unsolicited advice is just plain rude and unacceptable behavior. On the other hand, if advice is asked for, take the person to a more remote spot away from the floor and walk/talk them through the move. On a side note, if you can't talk them through it, you don't understand it well enough to teach it.

(Stay tuned for Part 2 of this insightful look at Dance Floor Etiquette, authored by Bill Poulter)

Mail Bag (responses regarding letter from 9-02-03)

I agree totally with Karen Pomager about today's R&B being mostly too fast for Hustle dancing. It also lacks the melodic variation of classic disco, which makes it more interesting to listen to while you dance. I don't think you can make kids understand this, though, they are set on being different from their parents! It’s how they establish an identity, by being “NOT THAT”, rejecting what their parents liked. Only grandparents have much hope in getting kids interested in what they liked (notice the Swing Music revival after the death of Rock)....
Carlos C.

.......I agree with Karen regarding the dance skill and speed of the music - there is a very definite correlation. The more skilled the dancer, the more they can dance to faster music. I've been dancing hustle for about 4 years and I can't handle faster music unless I'm dancing with a very skilled leader and the dance floor isn't crowded.... faster music produces sloppier dancing in those who aren't as skilled (me included). It's much harder to maintain good form and positioning when the music is fast. Take an entire dance floor of people doing this and it can get pretty scarey out there. A few weeks ago someone danced into me and broke the strap on my shoe. It was an accident, of course, but it could have been avoided if that dancer was just a little more cognizant and considerate of those around him.......
S.H.

.....I'm not sure who Karen is but to cut to the chase, if you want to encourage young people to get into hustle dancing your gonna have to play their music. 70's music is great but in the eyes of the youth that is for old timers. In your letter ron you have listed some great new music that works great for hustle dancing. Most competent djs can slow the beat down if it is too fast... new music is the way to go...think about it.. what 25 year old wants to dance to Boogie wonder land?
Bob T.

Hi Ron,
I'd like to respond to the issue of new music vs old music.... Everyone has to find that style and tempo of music which fits their individual tastes as far as the dance is concerned. When it comes to the music, neither one is right or wrong, it's strictly a matter of preference. As I progressed in my dancing I discovered a greater appreciation for the older more moderate tempo music. Some of this music, however, lacks some of the drive that seems to pull you up to the dance floor but the same can be said for some of the contemporary music as well. I happen to like both for different reasons. The one thing that I do like about some of the older music is the tempo because it really gives the woman an opportunity to execute properly and make her look good. Isn't that what this dance is all about, making the woman look good? .........When it comes to DJ's I have to disagree with Karen when she says that we don't have a real DJ in the Philadelphia area. In my opinion, Mark who DJ's at Micheal's on Tuesday nights, does a terrific job of blending the old and new music. I would put him in the category of a Bobby Morales or Roman, but like the music, tastes in DJ's is also subjective.
Scott M.

......As one of the few Philadelphia DJ's STILL "out there" I am highly insulted by her remarks. Does she think that guys like Bobby & Nelson, or even a "shlub" like me, can make a decent living by playing music to closed minds like her? How dare she presume to know S*** about music or its use in a nightclub. My guess here is that she's one of those "dancers" we in the club business dread seeing.....all water, no money and wants to be treated like royalty. As for this "non-real DJ in the Phila. area", she can kiss my a**.
OK, now I feel better.
Keep up the good work,
Best regards,
Michael G.

Spot Light
"Cerrone"

I sat intensely, strategically positioned, in front of the family TV, watching the weekly Saturday morning dance show, "Dick Clarks American Bandstand."
The year was 1977. The studio audience on the Bandstand set went into a frenzy. It wasn't a Hitchcock flick but a new superstar from France, making his US debut. At first I didn't understand it. It was reminiscent of the fab four that descended here in the sixties. This new artist had a different sound and style.
This was Cerrone.
" The trick’ to the fresh new sound was my reputation as a drummer: A kick drum, high in the mix, was to serve in his entire career and to this date," states Jean Marc Cerrone.
Cerrone was not anticipating such a reaction from the American public when "Love in C Minor" hit the East coast in a monumental fashion. At the time, we danced to a pop sound, mixed with vocals which lacked the full sound of a symphony. Cerrone took on Manhattan, playing in NY’s Studio 54 and other trendy venues, he introduced his "sexy wet vocals, funk influenced brass and Barry White type strings"....all combined made "Love in C Minor" the beginning of Cerrone's strong musical outfit. For years, we danced to his nonstop music. It intrigues me today, looking back, to understand that Cerrone, a French euro-disco wizard, was greatly influenced by one of America's shining stars, Barry White. The late great White made great use of a full orchestra in his elegant music, AKA as The Love Unlimited Orchestra.
Cerrone's music captivated us. "The music was created to dance too." The jackets to his albums were ingenious, sexy and typical of his European flair. He was beyond the bleeding edge, even today, his album covers would still be considered "racy" -- twenty-five years beyond their birth. For the next five years this euro-disco sound, drove the dance community as did other symphonic artists - I.E., Vince Montana Jr, Alec R. Constindinos, Boris Midney, John Davis & the Monster Orchestra, El Coco...
Cerrone enlightened us with SuperNature, Love In C Minor, Cerrone's Paradise, Give Me Love, Love Is Here......
Born in Paris, in 1952, Cerrone together with Giorgio Moroder are recognized as Europe's biggest contributors to the Disco-Sound. By the time he reached the young age of 18 he had already become the Orchestra - Leader at the Club Mediterranee. When he was 20, he had a very lucrative contract with the French producer Barclay. Here, in the US, he achieved his biggest success in the international Single-Charts with the release of "Super Nature." in July of 1978. He sold more than 10 Million records until 1979.
Like others, Cerrone felt a change in the music as the mid eighties slid in. The fashion and mood in the US was shifting again. Disco had been on a high for almost six years. "Music is first and foremost one that is to be happy and lend to dancing," reflects Cerrone. "When the change of music occurred in the mid eighties to be replaced with the birth of the lost or famed American youngsters to perform in a complacent and/or plaintiff/groaning rock (rhythm bass and electric guitar) influenced fashion (announcing Rock/Grunge and RAP), the taste for disco, i.e. joy and harmony, sensual body language and taking things ‘lightly’ had been replaced with the younger generations wish to express graver matters associated to the country's political spoilings and glorification's. The sound was no longer in demand as, Art is always, a reflection of society," explains Cerrone.
Today, Cerrone is back. After eight years of silence, he has released a new album "Hysteria." His influence on other artists is wide spread and is easy to see in the many samplings of his work. To date, more then 100 artists have made use of his music in theirs. Cerrone samples have been used by such American artists as Lionel Ritchie, Pink, RAP and groups like Kool G Rap and others. His music didn't go away.

Stay Tuned for Part 2, of my interview with Cerrone, the French euro-disco Wiz, as we prepare you for his new endeavors. Cerrone is back and returns in 2003 to the forefront. ( this interview was conducted via a translator)

Letter to the Editor
(regarding letters printed on 8/26/03)

First, Ryan: Ryan, stated that he has been dancing for one year, and feels that people his age (under 30) would be interested in hustle if DJs played more current music. Then, Jeff: Jeff wrote that "current music should be adapted to today's hustle."
1. You can go anywhere and listen to top 40. If this is what you want to hear, please sit in your car in the parking lot, and turn on the radio. How often can you hear the beautiful, 1978-era music that is played by only a few DJs in this country?
2. The club music of today to which you are referring is a nice addition to classic hustle music, but in case you haven't noticed, it runs about 130-140 BPM (beats per minute), and is difficult to dance to for an entire evening. Ryan, whether you realize it or not, with only a year of dancing under your belt, be mindful of your partners before requesting those Amber songs. Many a rotator cuff has been torn by novice dancers on club music. Enough said-- girls will know what I am talking about!
3. Finally, if you are still doubtful about the value of classic or "old" music to hustle dancing, please talk to (a) a real DJ like Nelson or Bobby; or, since we don't have a real DJ in the Philadelphia area <sadly> (b) a vinyl enthusiast such as esteemed editor Ron Bess, or my dear pal Frank from North Jersey. Personally, I credit all of the above for really keeping great music-- new and old-- alive in the hearts of true, die hard dancers.
Karen Pomager,
President of DanceTalk Fanclub-- Philadelphia Chapter
PS- My best wishes to Gladys Torres and family.

Letters From the Mail Bag (I invite your input, send to Rowenlb22@aol.com)

Hi Ron, I wanted to share my thoughts with you. I found your article today quite interesting. I'm new to the dance scene { I started hustle dancing about a year ago}. When my dance partner and I go dancing at night clubs in our area we dance to top 40 songs. I have noticed that others our age are interested in what we are doing. It seems that the music is an intrical part of hustle dancing. I attended two big dance competitions this year. Although they were enjoyable, I don't compete, the choice of music was 70's stuff. I would recommend for the DJ's of today to include current music. It seems like the people my age, 30 and younger would rather dance to new Moby, Pink, J-Lo, Kelly, Gloria Gaynor {nice article you wrote} then to only older disco. I went to a graduation party in June and we hustle danced all night to house music.
Ryan

I really enjoy recieving your dance letter. I fell out of the dance and club scene about 11 years ago when I moved to Delaware for a work related promotion. Since then, I'm divorced > 22 pounds lighter > moved back to Valley Stream and starting to get out dancing again. Your letter has put me back in touch with many old aquaintences that i lost contact with. Going thru my divorce and new job put a big strain on me....... I can not begin to tell you the great relieve I experice dancing and mixing with old friends. I'm thankful for your letter and the time you put into it to keep people like myself informed............ At age 49 I feel like a new guy with a new outlook.
With great appreciation,
Frank

Ron - Your listing in last weeks issue brought back many good memories. The Disc Jockeys' top choices was a great piece. Here is a question for your readers and disc jockeys. The way we danced the hustle back in 1978 is much different then how we dance it now. The pace is different and the dance has more grace and showman ship. That being said, the dance has morphed. Using that premise, why are we dancing to the music of yesterday? Since the dance has evolved shouldn't the music evolve also. Current music should be adapted to todays hustle.
I would be curious to hear others opinions on this issue.
Thank you for permitting me to express my thoughts. Feel free to print this.
Jeff Levoritz

Update
Here is an update on our dear friend Gladys Torres. Her daughter has sent this message out.

Hello to all my mom's friends:

Mom is doing great. She started radiation last Thursday and will be going
Mon-Fri until September 25th. After that, she gets a nice four weeks off to
rest up. She wants me to let you know that in about two to three weeks she'll
start seeing the side effects of treatment. These side effects include:
fatigue, weight loss, and the loss of her hair. On the upside her speech is
improving daily. She sends everyone her love and thanks for all the prayers that are
being spoken daily. Have a wonderful day and remember to keep on prayin'.

Take care,
Liani

Hustle Jam 2003 - Review

The weather couldn't have been better. An incredible gathering of dancers from all over NY/NJ descended on central parks free dance party, with a twist of Latin, this past Saturday.
Miquel Marrero and DJ Nino Torre joined forces to present their second, free event this summer. Many of the pioneers of hustle dancing, were on hand, dancing and partying with old friends. DJ Bobby Morales kept the crowd of 500 dancing all afternoon. Spinning classic disco, the audience was entertained by performances by Roberto Pagan's "New York Express" dance troop. Roberto has a 20+ year history dancing, teaching and competing. His troop performed "All That Jazz" ( from the hit show "Chicago") His talented dancers range in age from preteens to 40 something. The dance company also performed a Salsa formation routine that rocked the house.
I had the pleasure of performing with my seven year old daughter Lauren. Although she has been dancing since she was three, this was her first outdoor event under the sun. It was a great experience for her, strutting her stuff on a stage in the big apple. Also on the bill was Kenny Gonzales and Nelly Cotto. They performed to the dance classic "Wow," which wowed the audience. This explosive team combines high energy lifts & tricks with touch dancing. Both are legends in the hustle arena and, they proved it again.
The newly formed team of Stacy and Walter performed a new routine. This combination brings together two champions. Stacy Redler (who is the long time partner of Miquel Marrero) is a Madison Square Garden Champion. Walter Levy (who has competed for the last few years with Raluca Georgio) won the 2002 World Hustle Dance Championship. With only one a month of practice time under their belts they executed a wonderful routine that had the audience clapping for more. With such a great turnout and enthusiasm expressed, I'm sure your see future events next summer in central Park hosted by Miquel and Nino.
Congratulations to all those that made this a wonderful, fun, afternoon.

The Mail Bag
A previous topic continues to brew. Although I prefer not to rehash old topics, the criticism on this one went from bad to worse. I felt the letter below states it quite well.

It's embarrassing that the judges are not qualified to judge anything other than hip-hop dance.
If you're a couple dancing, you are doomed.
Jamie King is supposed to judge the technical part of the routines and he actually told the adagio guy that he (Jaime) was so focused on the girl that the male was not noticed. Well, Mr. King, that's the way it's supposed to be. A good male partner should be invisible in the dance. That makes it obvious that he doesn't know what he's talking about.
If MC Hammer says "it's all good" one more time....

One On One
"Gloria Gaynor"

We know her as the Queen of Disco.
She has decades of number one hit songs, but what does the Disco Queen think of the hustle and the dance phenomenon?
I had the honor of interviewing Gloria Gaynor as she spent time at home (New Jersey) between concerts. "I love dancing, it makes me feel good to see people dancing to my music." reflects Gloria. She has done it all, as a singer, performer and author she describes her love for dancing - "I'm more passionate about dancing then I am of singing. But I'm also very critical. I know good technique and form and what its suppose to look like."
But more importantly it moves Gloria to see the effect her music has on dancers. "I'm touching their hearts, I know dancing can relieve stress and tension."
In disco's infancy she had the country dancing and spinning in the clubs. Her music is full of real life experiences put to a dance beat. One of the few stars of the 70's who's light has brightened over the course of the years. Gloria Gaynor has survived. Her newest album release "I Wish You Love" on Logic/BMG Records, is terrific.
She rocked the house last month on ABC's prime time "Disco Ball." The special achieved the highest ratings in over 9 years in its targeted demographic and continues to be shown on VH-1.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Gloria began singing a year after high school when she joined the "Soul Messengers" - the year was 1965. "I was a cosmetologist as well as singing with local bands," that culminated with her being observed by a producer from Columbia Records at the Wagon Wheel, a club on 45th Street in New York. Not knowing, at the time, she was being discovered and would one day be asked to sing for President Clinton, Princess Grace and Pope John Paul II.
Gloria Gaynor’s first album with MGM / Polydor was 1974’s "Never Can Say Goodbye" which included her first song "Honey Bee." The title cut was a remake of the Jackson 5’s "Never Can Say Goodbye" and became the very first number one song on the Billboard Disco Action Charts. This was the first album of non-stop programmed dance music. She performed all over the world including some of her favorite night clubs, 'Studio 54, Limelight, Palladium, Paradise Garage....."
For the next five years, Gloria put out an album every year, all achieving "TOP 40" status. In 1975, this ambitious singer was crowned "Queen of the Discos," in front of thousands of adorning New York City fans. In 1978 Gloria released an album called "LOVE TRACKS," which featured the era's biggest dance hit and considered by many, the disco anthem, ..."I WILL SURVIVE." The song sold fourteen million copies. Gloria was becoming one of the biggest musical stars in the world and went on to win a Grammy Award. Today, "I will Survive" is still one of the most requested songs as well as the number one karaoke selection. It's been recorded in twenty languages, including Arabic,
Gloria has toured the world performing in some 75 countries and spending a great deal of time in Europe, where her French and Italian fans adore her. Between 1985 and 1990 she released six albums in Italy. With the huge dance revival happening in America, disco's biggest star has been kept busy. She appeared in the television spectacular, "Celebration of the 70's" singing renditions of "I will Survive" and "Never Can Say Goodbye" showing the American audience, Gloria Gaynor, (who never went away), was back.
Gloria's autobiography for St. Martins Press, "I will Survive," takes you thru her survival and details how anyone can survive the struggle and heart ache that life sometimes deals us.
Still living in New Jersey, by her side is her husband of twenty years. Though she never had children, she is kept busy with her thirty-nine nephews and nieces. She credits the happiness and stability she feels today to God's presence in her life.
Her fan base is not restricted to that of the 70's. "Its become a family tradition, my music is enjoyed by everyone from ages 8 to 80 - It gets passed down."
In the beginning dance music was regarded by many as a fad that would quickly die. "Now people realize it is a medium for enjoyment, relaxation, communication and recreation just like any other music. Although it has evolved it has endured."
Gloria keeps good company and maintains friendships with Candi Staton, Freda Payne and occasionally Denise Williams, and Donna Summer. She has been touring with Kool and the Gang, The Village people and Sister Sledge.
"All the Man I Need" is my pick off her new album. It combines the classic disco sound with a contemporary twist. A great song that drives you to the dance floor. "I Never Knew" has already had wonderful chart success. So why is it that her music is so well received abroad yet, in the USA, the dance sound hasn't been able to break through over the last few years?
"We are a young country, with a disposable music society. The youth in our country want a new sound (not what their folks listen too). In Europe, the people like what they like. It doesn't matter if it is old or new," explains Gloria.
Gloria continues to evolve. She looks wonderful and sounds better then ever.
Please visit her website and don't miss the opportunity to see this super star live.

Results & Highlights of WHDC 2003

The party started Thursday and didn't let up all weekend. Congratulations to organizer Diane Nardone for bringing together so many wonderful dancers, teachers and friends for this fun filled event. Channel 9, (WOR Television), Marty Angelo (Disco-Step-by-step) and Bill Kent from South Jersey Monthly Magazine, were in attendance to check out all the action. This years event marks Diane's second competition in New Jersey. Registrations tripled over the previous year. The dance attendance continues to grow as well as the number of vendors. Both men and ladies could be fitted from head to toe -- dance shoes, shirts, dresses, belts, hats, jewelry and more.
The amateur competitors really raised the bar for the competition. Dressed to the "9"s, they provided some of the most exciting dancing during the weekend. The junior dance division added a new element to the weekend festivities as they too competed for awards. It was moving to see so many new, young faces, gaining interest in the social dances.
A special presentation was made to tribute Gladys Torres. The Saturday Night Dinner show was performed in her honor.
Tony Pace, from Texas, was selected as this years recipient of the Christopher M. Nardone Spirit Award. Susan Marolda and Diane Nardone were both inducted into the WHDC Hall Of Fame.
The Top Teacher Awards this year went to Silvana Gallagher, from Philadelphia, and Keith Gussoni from New Orleans.
The attendees were invited to vote for their favorite Teacher at the event. Phil Lamothe was selected as the "Dancers Choice" (favorite male instructor) and Diane Nardone was chosen in the female category.
Congratulations to all the competitors for their hard work and commitment to social dancing.
You can still order your copy of this years competition by calling or writing (201) 666-6224 / diane@dkndance.com

The Mail Bag (responses to the new Dance Fever show)

*..I commend all of the dancers who performed on the first episode of the show regardless of their level of ability. I think that it took a great deal of courage as well as talent. My big criticism is the people who were chosen to be judges....... After the first dancer was critiqued, I changed the channel or walked away from the TV until the next dancer was ready to go on and skipped the wasted air time....

* ..If I never seen the original serires in the eights I would give the new show a B+.
It kept my attention and the talent was intersting. But I miss the fun and excitement that the original show had. The music back then was better, Denny would dance with his girls and put on an exhibition and you always had differnet celebrity judges. Thught their judging wasn't great it made the show fun. Comparing the new show to the old? I give the new show a C -.........

* ..... I thought it was a boring show and the talent was far from spectacular. I see better dancing right here in Philly. The one girl (blond) who danced and admittedly had no training was no better than kids I see dancing everywhere and anywhere.
I was really surprised that she even made the show. The 4 guys who won
were good - their timing was impeccable. The couple who came in second
(salsa dancers) were pretty good, but Sonya and any of the guys she dances
with, could run circles around them. The critique by the judges was too long. I can't believe that Carmen Electra is getting paid to tell the dancers how cute they are and what a nice outfit they're wearing....

Barry White
1944 - 2003

This past holiday weekend the music industry lost a wonderful bass singer who was the musical genius that innovated, produced and wrote million selling records.
Grammy award winner, Barry White, burst on the scene in 1972 with his Love Unlimited Orchestra and delivered a new sound combining orchestral dance music with a heavenly choir. This was the classy sound that helped deliver the early sounds of disco music to the masses.
At the age of 58, Barry fell to kidney failure. He had been undergoing dialysis while recuperating from a stroke he suffered last fall. He died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California on Friday, July 4th.
Over the last few years, this deep voiced crooner could be heard on episodes of "The Simpsons," the Fox comedy "Ally McBeal" (where he appeared) and in a widely broadcast Apple Computer commercial. He had been working on an album of duets to be released later this year. His sound was so distinct that the rappers and current musicians have been sampling his music including: 50 Cent, the Beastie Boys and Daft Punk. The soon to be released movie, "American Wedding" (American Pie 3) features Barry's music.
After his family moved to Los Angeles, he made his recording debut at age 11, playing piano on the Jesse Belvin hit "Goodnight My Love." When he was only 16 he cut singles with a soul group called the Upfronts. Later, as a talent scout, he discovered the Love Unlimited singers. He produced their million-selling 1972 single `Walkin' in the Rain With the One I Love.'' His career now slingshot up the charts.
The next year, White returned to performing with the song ``I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby,'' which topped Billboards R&B chart reaching No. 3 on the pop chart.
He is credited by many industry professionals for helping to launch the disco phenomenon with his orchestral ``Love's Theme'' in 1973, which he conducted with his group, The Love Unlimited Orchestra. In 1974, his album ``Can't Get Enough'' climbed to the top of the pop charts on the strength of the signature hits ``Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe'' and ``You're the First, the Last, My Everything',' which still receives heavy radio air time and is routinely played in the clubs. In 1981 he collaborated with his wife, Glodean, on the 1981 album ``Barry & Glodean,'' which featured the songs ``I Want You'' and ``You're the Only One for Me.'' During the hey days of disco he performed in concert backed by a 80 woman orchestra.
He enjoyed a larger resurgence with the 1994 album ``The Icon Is Love,'' and his ballad ``Practice What You Preach'' became his first No. 1 hit in 17 years. His single ``Staying Power,'' off a 1999 album of the same name, won him two Grammys and proved he hadn't tamed his libidinous lyrics. In 1999 he penned his autobiography, Love Unlimited: Insights on Life and Love (Broadway Books). That year, White's chronic blood pressure forced him to cancel several live shows with the group Earth, Wind & Fire.
Mr. Barry White is survived by eight children, grandchildren, and his companion Catherine Denton. Born in Galveston Texas, Barry possessed that rare talent and ability to put a "sex appeal" sound (normally heard in a ballad) into a dance song.
He gave women chills up their spine and kept us dancing all night.
His music will live on forever.

Letter to The Editor
(we welcome your letters, send them to Rowenlb22@aol.com)

Hey Everyone,
After 3 rounds of auditions, Laura and I finally made it out to Las Vegas to appear on the televised revival of Dance Fever. We have had to prepare (3) 90-second routines and (3) 30-second versions of those routines and we are beyond nervous....just taking a nap is nerve-wrecking at this point.
We were rehearsed by a Dance Fever coach and we were also interviewed. While we were there we also saw Carla & Kevin (Lindy), Yuval & Nathalie (Lindy) and Kyle & Sarah (West Coast Swing). We were very proud to be the only Hustle representation on a show that was formerly built on Hustle. We'd like to thank everyone for their support. We kept a lot quiet at first, simply because I didn't know if I could get time off from my job (commercial real estate) and it would be terrible for us to get excited if we had to bow out....but fortunately everything worked out.
We have a ton of people to thank just for getting us here....for starters Ron Bess, Arte Phillips, Billy Fajardo, and John Merisier.
So in case you want to watch what happens, the show premiers on SUNDAY, JULY 13 on ABC Family Channel. Don't ask us the results,....you'll just have to watch.
Much love to everyone...and we want you to know that it's because of all the social dances with everyone and the amazing Hustle/Swing community that we have mustered up the confidence and ability to be here.
Love from Vegas,
Erik (Novoa) & Laura (Cozik)

"Dance Fever" is Back

The TV show will premiere on July 13th, Sunday, (from 7:00 to 9:00PM EST) on the ABC Family network. The following five weeks, the show will continue on Sunday's but for one hour from 7:00 to 8:00PM. The series will conclude on August 24th with a two hour finale from 7:00 to 9:00PM from Las Vegas. Erik Novoa and Laura Cozik, from New York, are in Las Vegas right now competing on the show. The surefire mixture of dance contests and pulsating club music is back and ready to wow a whole new generation of viewers. The new show will be hosted by Eric Nies, (bye bye Denny Terio). Best known for his appearances on MTV's "The Real World" and "The Grind," Eric will preside over the amateur dancers as they try to impress the three celebrity judges:
Carmen Electra, singer and actress, best known for appearances on "Baywatch," "Starsky & Hutch" and her artistic contributions to Playboy magazine and her
on -- and -- off again relationship with Dennis Rodman. Grammy award-winning artist MC Hammer, will also add his insight. Hammer turned the pop world upside down singing and dancing to his own creative "It's Hammer Time" style. Rounding out the panel is renowned director/choreographer Jamie King, who has worked with Madonna, Britney Spears and Ricky Martin. The judges will each draw from their own professional dancing and performing experience to determine which amateur performer(s) has all the right moves to be crowned America's hottest dancer.
Tune into the show. Good ratings could lead to future seasons and contests in your city.

Now U Know

So, where did the term "hustle" come from? You've heard of the "Charlie Hustle,"
and "hurry and hustle over" or the expression to be "hustled" (by a pool shark) but where did the Hustle dance get its name?
The word "Hustle" originates from the Dutch word meaning "shake." It became a common street term. Don de Natlae, was one of the first dances to start teaching the hustle back in 1973. He remembers someone asking the young dancers, in a Spanish Bronx neighborhood, what was the dance that they were doing? "Oh" was the answer, "We're jus hustlin around."
As the Hustle dance began to evolve it initially took the form of other social dances. For all intensive purposes, it is a hybrid dance. It lacks a documented history, formal structure and syllabus. It was similar to a six count Lindy but was embraced by the young generation of dancers as it could be danced to the new popular disco music that was beating its bass drum to new levels. This fresh new sound helped drive the hustle dance. Since the Latin dances had such a big influence on the early hustle dance it commonly was referred to as the "Latin Hustle" by many.
Once Van McCoys hit song "The Hustle" charged up the radio charts (it hung there for 18 weeks) the dance teachers and club owners knew that touch dancing was back. Kids of all ages responded with a new enthusiasm for partner dancing. That was 25 years ago. (Next year there will be a celebration to recognize the contributions of Van McCoy and his Grammy Award winning song.) The New York Times called "The Hustle" the biggest dance record of the seventies....."
In the US, the Hustle dance got it's biggest push in the Black and Latino bars and clubs in the New York region. Ballroom dancing was rebounding from a decade of "nose dive" business in the "hippie like" 60's. Touch dancing lost its appeal but the 70's opened the door for changes in music, fashion and style. With the hippie age, rebellion and Vietnam behind us, college students and young folks, yearned for structure, one to one relationships, a permanent monogamous relationship. Couple dancing (as opposed to free style) was back in fashion then expressed as being "chic." The music of the 60's became somewhat political, what was referred to as head music. The 70's music was for your feet.
Looking back, it appears that the timing was perfect for this dance explosion. A new sound called disco emerged, a new dance to bring people together backed by hundreds of exciting Discotheques opening and new motion pictures featuring both the dance and music were in the theaters.
The term Discotheque was coined in Paris. It was a play on the word Bibliotheque (Library). Originally, a disco was a record library, and eventually a place to dance to records in a record library, instead of live bands. Chubby Checkers (the original Twister), wrote a song called the Discotheque and was known to use the expression first in the USA back in the early 70's. The first Parisian Discotheque was called the Whiskey a Go - Go. New York followed this format with Le Club. The Hustle dance was well received by all. It represented a bridge back to ballroom dancing. It was embraced by all ages. The dance sound during the late 70's was influenced by all types of music: R&B, punk and new wave. At first, the imports and deep disco music was limited to clubs with minimal late night air play on the radio. After the release of Saturday Night Fever and Donna Summer's string of hit songs (five songs hit the top ten which were all recognized on Billboards Top 40), disco music could no longer be ignored. Mrs.Summer's still collects nearly two million dollars a year in royalties alone from all those hits. After Disco became a dirty word, the sound continued but under the guise of the name "Dance music." Everyone at one point jumped on the Disco train and watered down the quality of the music, resulting in a commercial sound which meant poor quality releases. Two musicians, Casey and Finch, wrote the seductive hit song "Rock Your Baby" which was recorded by George McCrae. The song went to No. 1 on Billboard's pop and R&B charts in 1974. ''Disco impacted everything you hear on the radio today,'' says Casey, ``It's part of our culture, and it's going to be there until the world ends."
Madonna currently holds the record for the most Dance Club play singles. To date she has had 22 singles reach the number 1# spot on Billboard Magazine's "Dance Club Play."
Now U Know.
