Spotlight
'Gary McDonald'
He is quickly becoming a dance legend, Gary McDonald, half of the incredible team of Gary and Diana, has gone, Hollywood, at least for the making of the new motion picture 'Shall We Dance'. Gary was brought on as the head dance trainer for the stars ...two of today's biggest box office draws actors Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez.
Working along with choreographer Liz Curtiz, Gary had spent three intense months training the actors. JLO has a strong background in Jazz, hip hop while Richard Gere has minimal experience in soft shoe. The ultimate goal was to make them shine in the Quick Step and Waltz. Gary stresses the fact "there are no dance doubles." What you see - is them. The movie is based on the original motion picture which dates back 67 years ago to 1937. The lead actors in the original were the incomparable team of Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers. Considered to be their best work, the movie had a Gershwin score including the hits 'Lets Call the Whole Thing Off' and 'They Can't Take That Away From Me.' Clearly, Gary had a big challenge on his hands but with his championship record, he thrives in these situations. Along with his wife Diana, Gary has competed in 24 World Championships and was the first American couple to win the World Ballroom title. They are also the undefeated United States 10-Dance Champions for the past 10 years, competing in ten styles of ballroom. You may have seen them dance or co-host on television stations NBC, ESPN, A&E or PBS.
Gary's incredible dance history began at the early age of 7. Coming from a dance family, he spent five days a week - Eight hours a day with actor Richard Gere, for three months in preparation for the movie. This required Gary to work in Canada with Jennifer Lopez. Jennifer who has so many credits and titles to her name (recording artist, actress, videos, perfume and clothing lines) previously performed with Diana McDonald, years ago in the same dance troop in NY.
Not being busy enough, Gary makes his dance/acting debut as he performs in the movie with JLO as her dance partner.
With great anticipation for the national release on October 15, 2004, http://www.miramax.com/shallwedance , the red carpet debut will take place on Wednesday the 13th. Gary is quite proud of the final production. "It looks great," states Gary, "both actors did a fine performance."
Backed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, many of the original classic songs are used thru out the movie.
Gary & Diane are the co-owners of the Rogers Dancesport Center in Fairfield, New Jersey. They also host their own annual ballroom competition, the Manhattan Dance Sport Championships.
We look forward to the theatrical release of Shall We Dance and hope it gives the dance industry a well deserved boost. You can read more about Gary and Diana at the following sites. www.Dancesportcenter.com , www.Manhattandancesport.com

Dance Music Hall Of FameReview)
Last Monday, Spirit in New York City hosted an incredible Red Letter celebration of the music and stars of the 70's and 80's. This night was a 30 year odyssey thru the music that created the disco era. The Dance Music Hall Of Fame recognizes the contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution and development of dance music. This past week 13 notable artists, producers, remixers, DJs and individual records were inducted. This industry event brought many of the genius's of yesterday together for an uplifting evening. To balance out the gala of performances, tributes, awards and DJ sets.... 7 hustle dance couples took to the stage to entertain the audience. Raluca Georgio & Walter Levy, Luis Rosa & Mary Poma, Chris Bates & Trisha Caballero, Ron Bess & Joanne Piazza, Donna Boyle & David Padilla, Susan Fritz & Carl Charles and Bobby O & Yvette Rivera.
The night got under way with a music set by Long Island DJ Jackie McCloy.
The Masters of Ceremonies were Al Bandero, of radio station WKTU, along with Nile Rogers from the group Chic. Hall OF Fame Board member Thomas Silverman (CEO of Tommy Boy Records) inducted music legend Henry Stone. Mr. Stone was given the Life Time Achievement award for his six decades of contributions. Henry was a music pioneer/producer and signed K.C. and the Sunshine Band and many other important musicians to his TKO record label. Earl Young, from the Trammps, inducted Tom Mouton for his remixing. Tom is noted for the work he completed with Gloria Gaynor, First Choice, MFSB, the Trammps and many others.
Other recipients included: Thelma Houston's song "Don't Leave ME this way,"
DJ David Mancuso, the record "Love Is The Message" by MFSB, The BeeGees,
DJ Larry Levan, Singer/composer Barry White, the song "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" by Sylvester. Donna Summer was inducted and her award was received by her daughter Amanda, on her behalf. Amanda is the mirror image of her beautiful Mom. The tall, dark and gorgeous Singer/actress RuPaul inducted producer/composer/writer Giorgio Moroder. Donna Summer along with Giorgio set the Gold Standard for dance music in the 70's and 80's. Giorgio's production work with Donna Summer won them both numerous Grammy awards. However, he has also been the recipient of many Emmy awards for his motion picture soundtracks including Flashdance, Fame, Top Gun, Scarface and so much more. Mr. Moroder also composed the hits "Here TO Eternity," "The Chase" and "Get On the Funk Train" ...A true musical genius.
Also inducted was the late DJ Tee Scott, and the song "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer.
Each year the nominating committee will select nominees in all the categories and then send the choices to an international voting committee made up of over 1000 dance music experts. Candidates become eligible 25 years after their contribution or record release.
Martha Wash, from the groups Weather Girls and Two Tons OF Fun, sung happy birthday to Nile Rogers and also wished a sad good-bye to her long time friend/singer Izora Rhodes Armstrong, who passed away just days ago. Izora and Martha were the singers for Sylvester. Evelyn 'Champagne' King sung her classic hit "Shame." Her song was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Kurtis Blow rapped his popular hit "These Are The Brakes"...and showed us that he can still get down and break dance.
D Train's lead singer took the stage and performed one of their classic hits that had the audience spelled bound. It was simply superb. A special tribute to Donna Summer was performed by contemporary artists Reina and Kim Sozzi. The two sung a duet of 'Last Dance' which was a defining moment of the night. Reina currently has the number one dance song in the nation "When I Close My Eyes" while Kim has the monster hit "How Did You Know" which is climbing the charts with a bullet.
Dance music royalty was in full attendance: Frankie Knuckles (the Whistle song), Vince Montana Jr. of the Salsoul Orchestra (composer/writer), Promoter Magique,

Jenny Costa's Top Picks
WKTU's award winning mixmaster Jenny Costa is now spinning at Joey's in Clifton, NJ, on Saturday nights along with Al Bandero, thats right a blast from the past.
On Thursdays you can catch the lady, with the magic touch, at Mirage from 8PM till 4am and at Friday's Happy Hour Party from 4:30PM until 10PM. We had a ball that night... it was outstanding. Along with classic hits like "Heart to Break a Heart," "Feel Like Dancing," "Come to Me" and "Gonna Get Over You," Joli did her new song "Everlasting Love" which is off the hook. No, it's not a remake of the one we all know it's a completely different song" explains Jenny. Shannon also rocked the house with her classic dance hit's like "Let the Music Play" and also did one of her new songs called "Pretty", a really good R&B song."

Music CD Review
Ultimate Hustle Dance Mix
Disc Jockey Johnny V has just completed his first Compact Disc appropriately named "Ultimate Hustle." As one of the most popular club DJs, Johnny has compiled some of the hottest hustle dance songs on one compact disc. Created for the dancer, Johnny has hand picked the songs that he has witnessed ...drive the hustle dancers to the floor. "These are the songs that get the reactions from the dancers...I put them all together on one CD so they can have them all." Many of these songs are hard to find and/or out of print.... for instance "Make it Up to me In Love" by Paul Anka and the haunting theme from Love Story "Where Do I Begin" by Andy Williams. How about the classic Johnny Mathis song "Begin the Beguine." The record also includes some great instrumentals such as "Quiet Village" by the Ritchie Family and "Touch Me Baby" by The Ultimate. And if your looking for some songs with more punch try out "I Found Love" by Love & Kisses and "Feed The Flame" by Lorraine Johnson. All the songs are well woven together for not stop dance play... in total 13. Music is the universal language of dance and Johnny V has taken his years of experience to mix and compile his first release. Back in the 70's Johnny spun at clubs in Long Island like Le'tique, Decammerons and Uncle Sams. As the dance music cooled down he took a hiatus to raise his 2 kids but reemerged in the early 90's to share his vinyl collection with the dancers that appreciate the music. Today, Johnny V is the driving force behind the Tuesday hustle night at the IBBG Club and City Scene on Sundays in Long Island. He is one of those DJs that has the rare ability to read the dance floor and make the critical decisions on music selections.

Time Capsule
In the fall of 1976 a new television show, with a 36 state syndication, from New Orleans was introduced called "Get Down." A heavily disco oriented one hour show, it included performances by artists, dance instructions and skits with guests. At the same time, Billboard Magazine, the industry trade for music, had a popular music chart titled "Hot Soul Singles." The music list began to take shape towards the end of that decade displaying the direction of dance music. It wouldn't be until 1977 that a listing was added entitled "Disco Action." In 1976 Tom Moulton was busy producing music for many of the hottest artists on the Salsoul label. The original 12 inch vinyl record (the giant single) was introduced by Tom. Legend has it, he wanted to have an acetate of his latest mix pressed but the technician informed him that he had run out of 7" singles (45's). Moulton asked if he could have the song pressed on to a 12" disc. The result was amazing. The tracks on the small singles were too close together to have high quality sound reproduction. His brain storming idea lead to the publication of the first commercial 12" hit song "Ten Percent" by the group Double Exposure. The record became one of the best-selling 12" in the history of dance music. Still in all, Tom found time to write a weekly column for Billboard magazine. The 70's were clearly the renaissance for disco dancing and the music that drove it.
Next week, September 20th, 2004 Tom Moulton will be inducted into the Dance Music Hall Of Fame for all his contributions to the music industry. This new annual awards ceremony will take place in NY giving the artists of dance music their rightful comeuppance. It's unfortunate that it took nearly three decades to honor them.
Here are the songs that graced the top 10 status in Billboard magazine in September of 1976 ... 28 years ago. As hustle dancing was taking its stride your note Euro-disco hadn't landed yet in the states as funk and R&B dominated the chart.
Enjoy the memories.
1) Shake your Booty - K C and the Sunshine Band
2) Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry
3) Getaway - Earth Wind and Fire
4) Get the Funk Out of My Face - Brothers Johnson
5) Give It Up (Turn It Loose) - Tyrone Davis
6) Low Down - Boz Scags
7) Just To Be Close To You - Commodores with Lionel Ritchie
8) You Should Be Dancing - The Bee Gees
9) Only You Babe - Curtis Mayfield
10) Harvest For the World - Isley Brothers

resources of the music industry to raise awareness and to provide support
to the AIDS community. In 1992, the music industry had not yet addressed
the AIDS crisis with a unified voice, although many of its members had
succumbed to the disease. Bob Caviano, a respected music manager, wrote an
editorial in Billboard disclosing his illness and challenged the industry
to take action. A number of high-level executives heeded his call and
formed LIFEbeat. Over the years, LIFEbeat has emerged as a leading advocate
for prevention efforts directed at youth. Recognizing that music has always
played a significant role in the lives of young people, LIFEbeat has carved
out a unique niche by effectively using the power of music to reach this
population. LIFEbeat strives to cultivate a strong sense of self-worth and
self- respect in youth to help them resist negative influences that may
lead to engagement in risky behaviors.
