"Saturday Night Fever returns"

The NBC televised "Today Show" featured a special tribute to the classic movie, Saturday Night Fever. Marking its 25th anniversary, since the original theatrical release, it is now available on DVD. The disco theme morning show included a special Dance Contest. Like a spin off of the Dance Fever Show, former Host, Deney Terrio was on hand along with the original Trammps (there is a younger group using the same name) performed "Disco Inferno" and K.C. and the Sunshine Band performed "Boogie Man." The high light of the show was the Disco Dance Off.
Some of NY's finest shaked their groove thing. Erik Novoa and Laura Cozik got the honors of dancing first. The show is live and unfortunately, there was technical difficulties. Viewers at home heard, Earth Wind and Fires "Boogie Wonderland," but there was no sound on the set. Erik and Laura pulled it off, dancing to the sound of rain drops (the show must go on) and took home the huge first place trophy and tickets to Cabaret.
Each couple had 60 seconds to impress the judges. The panel, was more interested in "how tight their pants" were and the colors of their outfits as opposed to their dance skills. But, everyone seemed to have fun. Bobby Morales and Jami Josephson danced to Chic's "Freak" and Susan Fritz and partner Jerry performed to "Turn The Beat Around," by the late Vicki Sue Robinson.
The TV show is watched weekly by millions of viewers. I'm confident that this will attract new interest. This is a high profile show with loyal viewers. I see this as a big win for the Hustle community. This is probably the best public exposure the hustle has received in a while. The dancers clearly lifted the stigma by bringing viewers up to date on the Hustle. Many folks think of the hustle as either a line dance or just some bump and grind movements. All three couples reflected a fun, youthful dance style that should help boost new interest. Way to go.
KC has a new CD coming out called "I'll be there for you" he has also written a new book which will take you thru the years of his band. Both KC and the Trammps continue to travel and perform. * For the record*, the show picked the music not the dancers. I feel better now.

Need a dose of new dance music. Check out some of these tunes.

"Purple God" by Anny
"Easy" by Groove Armada
"Sleep" by Conjure one
"Gentle Rain" by Black watch & Greed
"This is your life" by MT Rushmore
"Ordinary world" by Aurora
"Seve the ego" by Jewel
"Gotta get thru this" by Daniel Bedingfield

New releases from Jennifer Lopez - Jenny from the block and Deborah Cox - Mr. Lonely, coming out next month.

"Retro"
Twenty-seven years ago, the sound was different. Vinyl records ruled.
The dance sound was growing and Disco was becoming a house hold word.
The radio stations played, Disco, under the guise of funk, R & B and top 40.
Many artists were crossing over from Rock, jazz and even country.
In the year 1975, these were the songs that ruled the radio air waves in Los Angeles.

1) Fly Robin Fly - Silver Convention
2) Thats the way I like it - K.C. and the sunshine Band
3) Love machine - The Miracles
4) Peace Pipe - B.T. Express
5) Change with the times - Van McCoy
6) Love to Love you Baby - Donna Summer
7) Messin with my mind - LaBelle
8) Every Beat of my heart - Crown Heights affair
9) Brazil - The Ritchie Family
10) It only takes a minute - Tavares

"Book Review"

If you've been to Dancesport on a Monday evening, you've experienced the best night out for hustle dancing. Dancers from far and near come to watch and develop their craft. One of the early hustle pioneers hangs his hat there. Paul Pellicoro, owner and operator.
Along with his 15 year partner, Eleny Fotinos, he runs the largest dance studio in NYC. Paul has judged and taught at many of the hustle events and promotions over the last three decades including: World Hustle Dance Championships, Disco America, Hustle USA, IHSC....
Although he started as a hustle dancer, he expanded his horizons mastering 15 other dances. He is recognized as one of the best known teachers of international Argentina Tango. Paul describes the tango as "the ultimate lead - follow dance. Both young and old are passionate about the Tango." Paul started teaching after he was recruited by the Arthur Murray studios in NYC. As the hustle gained ground, studios were anxious to roll out classes. Paul was known for his dance skills and the ability to break down the dance. They quickly tapped into his knowledge. In 1985, Paul stepped out and opened his own studio on Broadway. With a wonderful following, Dancesport studio took off. Recognized as the "Teacher of the Stars," he has coached the likes of Kim Alexis, Jennifer Aniston, Helen Gurley Brown, Matt Dillon,
Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Richard Gere (performing in the soon to be released movie "Chicago"), Sally Kirkland, John Leguizamo, Mira Sorvino, just to mention a few.
Paul's choreography is best captured on film with Pacino's performance in "Scent of a Woman." It's an incredibly exciting sequence. Two years in the making, "Paul Pellicoro on Tango," the book, is captivating. Like the hustle, the tango is very expressive. He takes you thru the history of tango and his attraction to this refined dance. But, it doesn't stop there. Not just a technical - instructional book on tango, (sure he covers the eight count basic) but gives his readers insight on the music, proper clothing, in-depth interviews with the legends of Tango and a guide to where to go dancing.
Paul's true gift is the technique he has developed for teaching. His body of work includes the films: Autumn in New York, Let it be Me, A River Runs through it, Straight Talk, Summer of Sam, Flawless and others.
As one of the worlds best known teachers, right from the get go, you will immediately experience his sensitive style in the beautifully written tribute to his partner Eleny. His writing technique makes this a pleasure to read I found myself unable to put it down. Paul continues to inspire others to embrace tango dancing. "Like the hustle, the dance continues to evolve." His book is a must read for all lovers of dance. At a recent book signing at Barnes & Noble's (Lincoln Center), it was standing room only as the entire stock of his book sold out. Published by Barricade books, it is available where ever better books are sold.
Bravo Paul.

Letters to the Editor (we welcome your letters - Rowenlb22@aol.com)

Leaders: don't assume that you have to dance "down" to your less-advanced followers. Many, if not most, of us (especially if we are good followers with good frame and connection) are capable of dancing "up" -- and genuinely enjoy the opportunity to do so. You won't know if you don't try; at least give us the chance (and don't just a single advanced move -- you might want to try more than one to see if she follows you). Remember, too, that the object is to dance as a couple, so don't go for moves that would be impossible to follow without already knowing them. Lastly, encourage your followers -- don't discourage them.

"Letters to the editor"

Dear Ron,
I totally agree with letter #2. I am a middle-aged, single, working mother whose passion is dancing. Because I want to go beyond just dancing socially, I want to take lessons to improve what I already know. Perhaps even enter a competition as a novice to get the experience. Private lessons, it seems, are only for the elite who have large pocketbooks. They are hardly affordable! Group lessons are better, but you don't get the individual attention. I get totally frustrated because I can't seem to get beyond a certain level. Then when I do go out to practice, many people look past me because I am not at their level. Again, I am stuck in the level that I have attained. It is like a Catch-22. Any suggestions???

"Review"
Marty Angelo, from Disco Step by Step, was invited to attend the Paramount Pictures DVD Release Party, held at Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood. Here is his hands on review of the evening.
Thank you Marty,
><
What started out as a party for six major Paramount Pictures movie releases
on DVD (Saturday Night Fever, Foot Loose, Flash Dance, Staying Alive, Urban
Cowboy, and Grease) turned into one big blast for just one, Grease! Even
though there were hundreds of former cast and crew members from all six
flicks, the main event was pure Grease. First Olivia Newton John took the
stage and sang her hit, "Hopelessly Devoted to You" from the movie
soundtrack then John Travolta joined her on stage to sing a duet, "You're
the One that I Love". I almost forgot he could sing! They both sounded
great! Then the entire cast appeared on stage and sang the popular "Summer
Nights"… including rock legends, Frankie Avalon and Frankie Vally.

All the featured movies had huge banners draped all over Paramount's New
York City back lot. Paramount treated us all with open bars, classic 50s
automobiles, hostesses dressed in '50s garb, delicious food stands, and the
studio even had the mechanical riding bull from the movie, Urban Cowboy set
up for anyone who braved to give it a try. There were stars galore .. every
time we turned around a famous face would walk by leaving us questioning
"Isn't that.. from.. ?"
We were truly disappointed that Saturday Night Fever was not featured at
all. I was at least expecting Travolta to dance with his famous co-star,
Karen Lynn Gorney. But it seems like Paramount wanted Grease… and Grease
is what we got! Darn!

It is a shame that the cast from each movie was not even recognized from
the stage. Most of them were in attendance too! Not even a
mention.. other than the titles of each flick. But I guess that is
understandable seeing Paramount had so many DVDs coming out at the same
time. The studio picked its biggest and the one which offered the most
entertainment for the evening. But Paramount should have had separate
promotions for each film so each could get its' due respect.

I was standing in a crowd off to the side of the stage by the VIP section
when Frankie Avalon was asked by a security guard to move out of that
area. I saw what was happening and spoke up and asked the guard: "Do you
know who you are talking to?" The guard had a puzzled look on his face. I
said: "That is Frankie Avalon. THE Frankie Avalon! The man who was
singing and starring in music movies long before any of the stars you are
guarding was even born!" The guard backed off and let Frankie back into
the VIP area. I yelled out to Frankie.. "If it wasn't for you and your
generation of singers, films like Grease would never have been made!"

I still want to see a reunion hustle dance of Tony Manero and Stephanie
Mangano.

Please see website for some exciting photos.

Lee Rofrano

As a young teenager, Lee would take the train from Brooklyn to Manhattan to frequent the high energy Discotheques. This started a journey, that would take her to the top rung of the disco ladder, but by age 19, she would walk away from it all.

At the young age of 15, Lee Rofrano met Ricky Quintana while dancing at Club Ipenema. "I would sneak on the train and get to the club before 11:00PM to beat the cover charge." Lee and Ricky's romantic relationship soon took a turn towards serious dance competition. Each was a gifted dancer but they had to synchronize their talents. They would rehearse at home then compete at local dance contests. "We won some and lost some." As they began to hone their skills they met Floyd Chisholm and Nellie Cotto. Floyd was putting together a dance troop and invited them to join forces. For three years, they would tour and perform with Floyd & Nellie, Eddie Espinosa & Gina Figueroa and Danny Llaurado & Carol Famigletti. "The group was the best, we really had a great time," Lee remembers.
All along, Lee and Ricky would continue to compete and perform. Their first television appearance was on New York's "Soul Alive" dance show. The show revolved around a weekly dance contest where couples, representing different NY/NJ clubs, battled for first place recognition.
Lee remembers, "a long TV taping and working under hot lights for hours. But it was a great learning experience."
After winning the preliminaries in NY, they were eligible to represent the big apple on the syndicated television show "Dance Fever." Only a year prior, their good friends, Floyd and Nellie shocked the country with their ground breaking hustle routine, which they performed on The Merv Griffin Show. Now, Ricky and Lee would add a page to that book and introduce classic adagio moves including: over head lifts, the back roll down and the magical snake maneuver. Her nude-style costume had the television staff biting their nails? They had her do a special dress rehearse before taping the hit show. "They were afraid something might pop out," a laughing Lee reminisce. Ultimately, they would win the first round and go onto the "Dance Fever" semi - finals.
After winning a prestigious contest at Regine's Night club in NY, they were selected to perform in the motion picture "Can't Stop the Music," featuring the Village People.
They also caught the eye of popular singer, Patrick Hernandez, and joined him on his tour to become his opening act. Hernandez was at the top of the charts with his hit single, "Born to be Alive." In addition, they performed weekends at "Plato's Retreat," an infamous Adult leisure club in the city.
But with four years into this non-stop dance world, Lee said good bye. "I didn't want to dance anymore." "Ricky had a life long goal to dance, this was his dream. I started dancing as a baby, I loved to dance but I slept late and danced all night for four years. I didn't want to do that the rest of my life."
Ricky would move on to new partners and stay active in the dance scene but Lee needed a change and moved back to Brooklyn, her home town.

Today, she recides in Staten Island and works for Cohen Brothers Real estate in the city. Two days before the attack on the world trade center, Lee was married (for the first time) in Las Vegas. Still friends with long time dancer Michael Babbino, she loves to look back on her greatest teenage memories, that of her dance years.

She was fortunate to rise to the top of her craft at only 17 years old - when the country was in a disco dance craze and the competition was at its peak.
Lee gets out to dance but reluctantly is not a regular. She really gets a thrill when someone spots her. "I remember the time I walked into Dancesport and Carl Charles exclaimed, look who is here, A blast from the past."
Truly one of the more exciting dancers, Lee, had a positive influence on many others to follow her. She helped introduce a new style of the hustle to dance enthusiasts all over the country. Her showmanship and dare devil moves literally took your breath away. She has left an indelible contribution on our dance and a warm impression in our hearts.

Letters to the Editor

Does anyone want "new blood" on the hustle floor? If they do, then many people need to change their dance floor manners. For two years, it hasn't changed much. It's still... I'm too good to sacrifice one or two dances with a beginner... This is a group thing... it takes a majority of friendly people in a crowd to win people
over. As it is... anyone who has come in for the past couple of years has
been subjected to a lot of disappointment.... men, too... I have recently
found men (new guys) asking me to dance and being overwhelmingly grateful if
I dance with them... due to their lack of opportunities to dance with anyone
but a beginner... I, too, have felt the need to show deep appreciation for
more advanced dancers to dance with me... In most cases, true leaders are
servants... except in Hustle, it seems. Whatever happened to the attitude
that from a male leader of "let me show everyone how good of a leader I am,
I'll dance with this beginner and show everyone that I can make her look
good..." and from the women... "let me practice dancing to any lead, even a
weak one... this will help me become a better follower..."
You know what would be fun... is more "jack and jill" contests --
-- that are geared for matching "excellent leaders" with new
followers.... This would be encouraging in all respects.

"Time Capsule"
Feathers Dance Contest
Back in the day, the most exciting dance contests were held at some of the best discotheques in the country. Prizes could range from cold cash to exotic trips or even shiny new automobiles.
The night clubs that sponsored the contests typically would run preliminaries then bring the weekly winners back for the semi and/or final competition. The clubs would be packed. A contest was such a great draw and the atmosphere was just right:
The sound systems, lighting and special effects would create the ultimate setting.
These contests, in most cases, were open to anyone and pretty much had an anything goes policy.
One memorable contest took place in the summer of 1981, at the beautiful Feathers Disco in Long Island, NY. Each week the best couple qualified to return for the finals. These were some of the best couples in the country. The Silver Screen never witnessed the high energy provided by these teams. Their electrifying performances would still stand the test of time:

*Roma Moon and Joseph Harris danced to Salsoul's "It's good for the Soul"
*Lucas Jamie and Kathy Young chose the classic "Shine on Silver Moon".
*Ricky Quintana and Lee Rafrano danced to Melba Moores "Pick Me Up I'll Dance" *Derrick Allen and Lilia Parra performed to Meco's "Star Wars".
*George Valesquez shocked the crowd dancing to "Savage Lover" in full caveman attire
*Billy Fajardo and Sandra Rivera selected the theme from "Star Wars"
*Ralph Rameriz and Maria Gomez chose "Latin Odyssey" by Voyage
*Miquel Marrero and Annette performed to "In the Socket"
*Billy Assmus and Annabelle danced to "Fame".
And first place went to Eddie Vega and Laudes Jones as they performed effortlessly to "Ten Percent" by Double Exposure. The applause was deafening.

"Letters to the editor"
#1
I tried to think of a situation in which I could relate being a competitor and also being social. I have also been an athlete all of my life, mostly a basketball player. I still play today, however, I no longer play in competitive leagues. There are times when I have played in highly competitive situations in various leagues and on this level the intensity is very high. By comparison I have also played socially or what would be called "pick up ball." At this level one does not play with the same intensity as in league competition, although, there are those who have difficulty differentiating this aspect of the sport. Over the years I have learned how to adjust my level of play for the nature, level of competition and corresponding level of talent in any pick up game. To me, a pick up game is purely about the enjoyment of the game and the value of the exercise. Sure you play to win in order to make the game interesting but not at all costs. Also, I would never, and I repeat NEVER tell someone that I wouldn't play with them because they weren't at my level. I would always bring the level of my game down to theirs, allowing it to remain competitive, so that they could have an opportunity to play, learn and grow. My game NEVER suffered because I was playing with someone who had less ability than I. If I never played with those at my own level then certainly it would begin to decline. I see dancing in a similar light. It takes a mature dancer to recognize the circumstances surrounding the environment of the dancing situation and adjust accordingly. By dancing with people of all levels we improve ourselves, grow as dancers and increase our circle of friends and acquaintances. I can only see positive things in dancing with everyone even in those situations when a few mishaps may occur for even these can be good teachers.

#2
Hey Ron thanks for keeping me on top of all the dances news and events.
I wanted to respond to the on going question of how to attract more dancers to the hustle. My family .... and I have been in the Hi Fi Stereo business for over 20 years. Last year when I attended tha Atlanta Trade show the home entertainment division was committed to grow the DVD industry. At the time VCRs captured 80% of sales.
The manufactures understood to grow this diviison they would have to be competitive.
Va La, they dropped the price of DVD players and the cost of a DVD. The market has since then virtually flip flopped. They made it affordable. I gasp when I hear what the dance instructors are charging for a private lesson. These folks are shooting themselves in both feet and killing the interest of would be hustle dancers. If all these "professional" instructors really give a damm about getting new people involved they make it affordable. It's a joke. Now I'm sure people are going to say, well that's what the market bears, if they can get it. But really, how can a low income, college kids, young urban professionals afford a 55 minute lesson for the outragious prices they charge? My accountant that employs two secretaries has two college degrees and is certified in the state doesn't even charge that rate. And to the best of my knowledge I'm not sure if half of these "hustle" teachers have any formal training in teaching?
So who is really being hustled?
Make the classes affordable and they will come. I challenge some one to step up.
Thankyou for the chance to express myself.
