Letters To The Editor

Mary Lou and Artie Beck would like to thank all of you for your very kind expressions of sympathy following the passing of Mary Lou's Mom on Nov. 2nd and her Dad on Nov. 8th.
Many of you probably remember Mom and Dad from our parties when we used to live in Merrick. They loved watching "the dancers". Please keep them in your prayers and memories,

Hi Rowenlb,
I wanted to express my thoughts about the show Dancing With The Stars. I have read in your newsletter how folks are questioning the judging at competitions at hustle - Salsa - West Coast Swing. It appeals that there maybe a rematch between Emit Smith and Mario Lopez. I felt that it was a no contest. Mario was light years better then Emit but, it was a popularity contest. A rematch would have the same results. Emit Smith #1. unless the show changes the judging the results will not change. It seems like the judging system on the show is no better then the system at competitions. I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving,
Sincerely,
Fawn

Next week in DanceTalk, we take an up close look at a New Years Event that you don't want to miss. Stay tuned.

This edition of DanceTalk is sponsored by Red Hot Salsa #2, read all about it below.

Make it a great week,
Ron

Red Hot Salsa 2 (made simple)

So you couldn't get enough of Red Hot Salsa, well, she's back. Lisa Nunziella delivers another awesome video featuring the hottest advanced "Cardio Salsa" workout around. Lisa will have you dancing, burning calories and working your style. This is a hot, spicy and sexy WORKOUT that will challenge your brain as well your body. Even the most difficult steps are explained so that their easy to learn. At the conclusion of the DVD, Lisa gives you a complete breakdown of all the steps.
Lisa is a certified trainer & group exercise instructor. Many dancers know her best as a member of the Hustle Hall Of Fame's elite category "Life Time Achievement"
She has captured virtually every crown that existed during the Disco revolution. Lisa competed and performed all over the world, winning titles with various partners (Eddie Vega, Danny Llaurado, Ricky Quintana, Arte Phillips & Deano Georgio). Lisa won the World Hustle title, two time winner of the United States title, semifinalist on Dance Fever, Harvest Moonball winner at Madison Square Garden and was undefeated winning for 13 consecutive weeks, (never done before) on Ed McMahon's Nationally televised "Star Search," winning the $100,000. grand prize. From there she moved onto motion pictures and television videos performing her incredible dance feats.
Her newest DVD (from the Dance With Lisa series) takes you thru warm-up sessions to live precessions while stretching and doing the movements. You'll then be treated to non stop choreography. The combinations are fun and exciting. Trust me you will sweat and get a great workout. The steps are easy to follow and include written captions thru out parts of the video highlighting the key points of the movements. Their great reminders.
The DVD is a fine quality production. It is very informative and is a wonderful visual package. Lisa is a little dynamo and continues to shine on camera. She is in INCREDIBLE condition and speaks clearly, repeating the movements for dancers of all levels.
I had the distinct opportunity to dance, compete (against) and perform with Lisa.
She is the consummate professional which is reflected in her newest DVD.
You can visit her website and make a holiday purchase early. Treat your self to a great fitness video that will keep you in shape and ready to dance up a storm.

Letters To the Editor

Hi Ron,
Back in 1998, the second-ever National Hustle Dance Competition (after Hustle USA) took place in March of 1999 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  Being an avid hustle dancer and wishing to see hustle events grow, Drew Axelrod combined his love of the dance and his professional experience producing many convention..........to launch the first World Disco Classic.  WDC I & II were very successful and united many of the best dancers to a tropical vacation destination.... World Disco Classic honored dance industry legends Francois Szony, John Lucchese, Cuban Pete and Walter Darian (first year) and dance music industry legend Vincent Montana, Jr. of Salsoul Orchestra fame at WDC ll. Both World Disco Classics received extensive print and broadcast media coverage....Past staff members included John Festa, Donnie Shields, Nelson Roman, Jenny Costa, Bernie Lopez, Bobby Gerard, Johnny Vicino, Nino Torre, Randy Atlas, Vickie Kay, Jimmy Yu, Ron Bess, Diane Nardone, Arte Phillips, Maria Torres, Robert Cordoba, Deborah Szekely,  Ken & Donna Roesel, Carl Charles, Billy Marti, Lori Brizzi, Chris Hemmer, Bobby Ossias, Keith Harrison, Luis & Mary Rosa, Jami Josephson, Gabriel Gomez, Rene Gueits, Edie the Salsa Freak, Donna Boyle, Paul Pellicoro, Billy Fajardo, Katie Marlow, Gregory Harrison, Brian & Silvana Gallagher..... In 2001, Drew took an event hiatus to support and help launch Diane Nardones World Hustle Dance Championships held in Las Vegas. The next year, World Hustle Cruise, a dance convention-at-sea was originated and has sailed on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and now sails on an Italian-style line, COSTA cruises. The event is now in its 8th year and was featured, the last two years, on the cover of the New York Times Travel Section. Last years cruise had almost 300 dancers and was sold out. The cruise has grown over the years to become one of the largest annual social dance cruises -having adding more music & dance styles. The HUSTLE, SWING and SALSA CRUISE will take place from March 18-25, 2007 and departs out of Fort Lauderdale...  It stops in San Juan, St. Thomas, Casa de Campo & Turks. ................................

Dear Ron,
Here's a brief report of my experience at the Puerto Rican Hustle and Salsa event. The Condado Plaza hotel in San Juan was a good venue. It was large, had a
ballroom for dancing, and 2 pools and a bar that you could swim up to for your drinks. The weather was fabulous most of the time. From the tristate area, there were mostly Long Islanders in attendance. I like the combination of hustle and salsa. It
provides variety for music, dancing and participation. I've been told that the hustle evolved from salsa, so it makes sense.  As you know, the Hispanic sector of the US population is the fastest growing demographic, and this is evident in the popularity of salsa. David Melendez, one of the organizers, explained that his vision was to help keep the hustle alive by introducing it to young people who dance salsa.  David
is a very gracious man, and as you can imagine he was quite busy, but nonetheless he was always friendly and ready with a smile and conversation.  The Hustle and Salsa congress in New York was separated into 2 areas, but here the music and dancing was held in the same areas and was switched each half hour. Bobby Morales and Noel Colon played contemporary selections that were appealing to younger people as well. Great dancers, especially Miguel Marrero and some
others, sought out the salsa dancers and showed them how to dance. In the same spirit, Luis and Mary Rosa, together with David Melendez's  dance studio, did a
performance with young people that was both entertaining and heart warming.
Best regards,
Michelle

Rotating Partners - by Joyce Szili

Why would someone not return to a dance class?
Sometimes it is because the teacher never asked the students to rotate partners. Rotating partners lets students meet and interact with their classmates and it limits the negative impact of lead/follow unbalanced classes. It is understandable that some dancers might not be interested in trading partners. But if the goal of learning to social dance is to learn to dance well with a variety of people what better situation is there, than in a group class? Social dancing is a lot more fun if you dance with a variety of dancers, especially during a dance class.

"Spot Light"
Dennis Matera

He collects rare classic automobiles, from the 60's, but his music library shifts into gear with the 70's. DJ Dennis Matera is on the move.
"My goal in the DJ booth is to make sure everyone is dancing and having a good time."shares Dennis. Recognized as an interactive Disc Jockey, Dennis invites your requests and welcomes your feedback. " If I don't have your music, I will have it next time". Dennis has that uncanny ability to remember a face and link it to a song. The next time he sees you, presto, he puts it into over drive and your hear your song before you can request it. These are the points of difference that has made Dennis one of the tri state areas top DJs.
Dennis is not new to the hustle dance world. He began hustle dancing over 20 years ago. "My biggest inspiration was my first hustle instructor (now best friend Eusilio DiPace) dancing to Souvenirs by Voyage."  Dennis grew up in Elmwood Park, NJ and raised his family in Totowa. With an educational background in the field of electronic technology, he managed 20 Wireless Cell Phone laboratories. With such a diverse background in electronics, technology, music and dance he possesses the key ingredients to multi task in the DJ Booth. He creates an exciting energetic, get-up-and-dance atmosphere wherever he plays. His knowledge and social expertise in the DJ booth are second to none.
" I am a "dancer's" DJ.  It's your party, not mine! "If my goals are accomplished, my life is complete. My limits are endless until the plug is pulled."  Having been on both sides of the dance floor as a competitive and social dancer, DJ Dennis knows the importance of feeling the music deep inside. Dancers can expect to hear a broad selection of music well known to the Hustle world including some Latin, WCS, Classics, Club and beyond. He knows how to jump start a party and get the dancers in motion.
"I have heard hustle dancers are tired of the slow, mundane music. They would like more energetic music so they can become creative in their dance" shares Dennis. "It is difficult to find "hustle music" in a store.  However, every day I am in search of hustle music to add to my collection.  It is a never ending job, but I love it. "A great hustle music collection is priceless? and I have it "
His DJ experience encompasses a variety of dance venues, including spinning at Capers Nightclub at the Holiday Inn in Wayne, Doc's Nightclub in the Holiday Inn in Totowa and Illusions Nightclub in the Sheraton Crossroads in Mahwah. But Dennis doesn't put on the brakes, he is available for Communions, Parties, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, School Dances, Sweet 16s, Car Show Events, Anniversaries, Engagements, Weddings, Corporate Events and Ballroom Studio Parties. He is the resident DJ for Roberto Pagan's Dance Studio in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ. His next gig is at the Starlight Dance Center, Nutley, NJ on November 10th. You can hear Dennis on Nov. 17th at Roberto's Dance Studio and on Dec 16th, for Roberto Pagan's Day Recital & Evening Dance Party. During the day Dennis keeps himself busy as a realtor with Century 21 Gold Properties Realty in Totowa, NJ. He is a Licensed New Jersey State Trainee Real Estate Appraiser with LB Appraisals in Wayne.
Like a fine tuned 8 cylinder engine in a classic corvette, Dennis takes his music very serious. But look out, he has nocturnal characteristics and comes to life in the DJ booth at night.
Come Dance with DJ DENNIS at a party near you!  http://www.djdennismusic.com

I think everyone who is capable of running an event like this should consider doing something like it in their own community. It was a fabulous evening. Most towns concentrate their recreational activities in the direction of their youth...this one was for adults.)

Thanks You's

Hi Ron,
Please send my thanks to my friends at the Starlight ballroom and Battista's.
I am on a corporate assignment working in Peru, living near Lake Titicaca. The night life here is incredible. The dancing and music is so different and festive. I am home sick and grateful to stay in touch by your newsletter. I am finishing up a project and should be home prior to Christmas. Nothing can replace my family, close friends and the dancing back home....... The Internet and your newsletter are a true life saver. I hope your family had a great Halloween..........
happy Thanksgiving and God Bless,
Gayle

I would like to say thanks to all for my birthday celebration at Michael's.  All the cards, well wishes and gifts were truly heart warming.  Natalie again you out did yourself with the cake.  For all those who participated in my birthday dance(male & female) thanks--I think I really started to feel my age at the end.  For those I missed, I guess I too have to working on "Time Management" and I own you all one.
One last thank you to someone without whom this would not have happened.  A thank you to my best friend and life partner--Carole.
