Hello, I stumbled upon your website on a google search, and thought it would be worth a shot to ask you a question. In the late 70's, I was an avid club goer with my friends. One night at the old Electric Circus, a gentleman came over to my friend and I and asked if we would like to dance in the background of The Soap Factory show in NJ.  We did go many times, had alot fun, even though we were amateur. I was wondering if you know if there are any tapes or video available from these old dance shows. I think my family would get a kick out of seeing this. I know it was WNEW at the time. Is there anyway to find out?
I would appreciate any info.
thank you.. Sharlene   gio221@aol.com

To all the Wonderful People at Michael's last Tuesday night (11/15):  Thank you for making my birthday so very special again!  The cards filled with good wishes and cheerful bags filled with goodies overwhelmed me, and I appreciate every one of them.  Thanks to all the great dancers who got in line for my birthday dance - that is always so much fun.  DJ Mark, you did your usual outstanding job - thank you!  Natalie - your cake was exceptionally delicious, but we have learned to expect nothing less from you - thank you!  And my special thanks to my loving husband Andr, who put this all together for me.   I hope to celebrate many more birthdays with the wonderful people of our dance community.
Sincerely, Carole Phelps

Letters to the editor (please send your letters to RowenLb22@aol.com)

Hi Ron, I want it be know that "Robin Amante" has "Juice".  There were people
at the IBBG last night that came out to celebrate Robin's birthday that often require a crowbar to get them out of their house..... Some of the originators from the Ralph Lew and Andrea True Connection Days. But they all came out for her. It was a lot of fun. Robin deserves the turnout with all the effort she puts in to keeping people dancing on the Island. There were so many people there and Robin know's them all.
Happy Birthday Robin,
 Chuck

Hi Ron, I wanted to comment on your Editorial as to why the hustle events are waning in attendance.  I can say that it's mostly the music.  I'm not afraid to ask the men to dance. However, one common excuse I heard was yes, but I want to wait for a better song. I used to think they were too picky until I found myself starting to feel the same way.  I attend hustle nights in many places and hear the same music I've heard since I was a kid.  I loved to dance to it then, love to dance to it once in a while now, but when I hear it every time I go out, my boredom has grown and I find myself starting to avoid certain dance nights because the music never changes. It would be great to have the DJ's do some homework.....Hearing music that is so upbeat you can't sit still in your chair if you wanted to. There is still the fact that many hustle dancers are loyal to their small group of people they know and never dance with a new person or someone outside their clique....   but I've heard the 'dead music' comment from so many people that I feel it's a vital part of keeping hustle nights alive. I hope you give this some thought and perhaps we can help create a new pulse in the hustle socials around the country.

Thanks, Lisa

Even on "So You Think You Can Dance" they did not do a hustle. Instead, they called it "Disco" and the general population doesn't know the difference.  It was "showy" but demonstrated NO Hustle dance technique.  Remember last year the folks at CBS Morning News talked about the Hustle and casually demonstrated something alike to the Bump and presented it in a Hustle context. I was appalled and wrote them a letter. They never responded.  People still don't know what the Hustle is.  At best, they visualize John Travolta throwing his arm up and his hip out.  There needs to be a show devoted to Hustle, produced by Hustle dancers, and driven by Hustle pros.  Even most ballroom teachers teach a bastardized version of the Hustle.  After 30 years it's time the world sees what the Hustle really is.  NOTHING I have seen on TV or in the movies has depicted it accurately. We need to start talking about putting together a script and performances for an Indie!   Best,
Susan Mollica

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I don't remember ever being moved to write to the editor but your last article was a really nice piece on "what's happening" in the dance world... how society enjoys watching the reality dance contests and (the unfortunate truth of) how we've slipped back from attendance.....Let's just have fun and enjoy!  And let's appreciate everyone who shares a common thread -- the Hustle - without passing judgment on fellow dancers for their character, ethnic background, religion, appearance, expertise or lack there of .......To keep this dance alive will "require" new blood -- less experienced but that's okay... cause to look great (unless you already are great at Hustle) you'll need to surround yourself with people who don't look so "great" on the dance floor -- or at least not as great as you.  To all the beginners: it doesn't take that long to become an  intermediate dancer...So, Advanced & Intermediate Dancers, you just never know how your act of kindness extended to the beginner or non-dancer may encourage that person to really get their feet wet and become a sought-after dancer one day very soon -- some, including myself, may never become a sought-after dancer by the advanced dancers,  and that's okay because some will, and everyone grows at a different pace. .....Thanks -- I needed a kick in the pants. (Smile)  Shannon Johnson

Ron, In response to your inquiry as to why the hustle dance community is not growing - I believe one of the reasons (great song by the way) is the quality of the music that is played at the dances/events. Many of the songs are poor remakes of classic dance songs. The tempo's are slowed down to accommodate novice dancers which at times is needed- but I often sit at dances too long waiting for some great music that I know exists that is not getting played. I try to bring my wife to the dances & she really is not impressed with the music either. Maybe we are spoiled because we grew up during the disco years. Back then, If the D.J. didn't play inspiring music-the dance floor was empty! I often listen to the strobe( sirius), chrome(x.m.), the studio 54 clubhouse, and 1 club.fm  : a tribute to disco &  I rarely hear that type of music at the dances I attend. Someone must be listening for these outlets to still be operating. Play more Dance  Classics & don't mess with the original material. Just another opinion!
Bob

              Editorial

While dancing is getting a lift on television the hustle continues to take a back seat in the clubs and studios. According to the Nielson ratings, viewers responded in great numbers to the TV reality dance shows, while at the same time, there is a lack of growth of attendees at many of the socials, competitions and weekly dance parties.
Earlier this year, one of the premier websites devoted to Disco is no more - Discostepbystep. After 12 (successful years) the annual hustle dance (July 4th) at Lincoln Center in NY, has been eliminated, in other parts of the country, hustle dancing is losing steam.
So, the million dollar question is, if folks get a kick out of watching dancing on TV, how do we stimulate an interest for views to take an active role? How do we get them off the couch?
When the hustle hit its stride in the 70's it attracted all ages, teenagers to adults. Many of those teens are the leaders and organizers of today's events.  But, today we are falling short, unable to attract and engage the teenagers.  This is the generation gap that we have not been unable to fill.  As the median age in our country rises....so has it's waist line and body weight. We constantly read about the lack of exercise by our youths and adults and the growing concern and danger of obesity. You would think dancing would be just what the doctor ordered? The message just isn't getting out.  Dancing is cyclical like commodities, fashions, real estate and music. The trends of yesterday ultimately return...but with a tweak.
Ultimately the responsibility to grow the hustle lies on all of our shoulders.
I challenge other communites/cites to join together and unite to grow the hustle.
I challenge you to do what they did in Philly (close to having the plug pulled on the Tuesday night hustle party at Michael's Cafe) promoting and rebuilding the attendance with theme nights and celebrations. I challenge you to contact your old friends and pull them off the couch and draw them back. I challenge parents to bring your kids to open events, I challenge the dance instructors to go to the colleges and high schools to teach and offer group classes to the students.
We all have to help build and secure our dance for tomorrow's generation, no one else is going to do it for us.

Hi Ron, feel free to share this with your readers.
I believe the economic situation across our country has encouraged more part time teachers to make a go of it now teaching on a full time basis. This should be a positive movement for all dancers. Dance students are customers. The teachers across the country will have to work harder to  win and earn their business. I see this increasing the quality of the lessons and feel it will push teachers to do their best and give a great quality lesson. With more competition among teachers looking, the product should get better. The increased number of teachers may not make everyone happy but these are the fundamental rules of good business dynamics.

Letters to The Editor

I would like to convey my sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone who joined in the acknowledgment and celebration of my birthday last Tuesday at Michaels Caf. I appreciate the thoughtfulness and generosity of the dance community. You are kind hearted and caring, and certainly the most talented and fun dancers. It is truly a pleasure to be part of your dancing life. A special thanks to Diane Nardone, the Queen Bee, for the delicious birthday cakes, and to Trish, Ron, Terri, and Steve. In addition, it is always a bonus to celebrate a birthday with Brian Gallagher, the King. Finally, I do appreciate that my shirt stayed on this year! DJ Mark

Hi there Ron,
I really enjoyed the write up you did on the dancers that made it to the Tv show Dance Fever. At the time, it was the best. Glad to hear from dancers like Lisa Nunziella, we use to call her little Lisa and Scott Nurse was Mr. Cool. I did watch the show 'So you think You can dance' every week, intensely. I thought it was off the hook. Loved it big time. But here in Shelton, (Connecticut) , no news, nothing on TV about the show. Kind of like what you said in your story!!!!!!!!!!!!dancers just can't get a break.
I danced from 76 to 82 before I went into the airforce. I wasn't into competing but danced at Roseland, Brown's, Ice Palace, Ipenema, Dale's, Bonds. The dancers on the show SYTYCD, were far superior then anyone I can think of back then. The talent has gone up but nobody seems to be paying attention.
Thanks for keeping me in touch,
Larry Walters
