Heidi & Benji Invade NY
Mark your calendars for a wild weekend of dancing as Mr. Entertainment
Benji Schwimmer and the adorable Heidi Groskreutz spend a weekend at
Mirelle's. He captivated everyone as he was crowned the dance champion
on "So You Think You Can Dance" while his cousin Heidi stole our
hearts. Together they are incredible.
This young talented team are making a stop in New York in between
motion pictures, music videos and dance performances. Benji showed that
he is versatile in all styles of dance plus with his energetic
personality he stole the show. Last weeks social featuring Tony
& Elana from Dancing with The Stars was an early sell out. You
don't want to be shut out of this one. Louis Del Prete continues to
bring the top talent to the island. Louis hosts his weekly dance
socials in addition to being a cutting edge DJ and an accomplished
singer. As an organizer he has brought the best talent to the long
Island area. Benji and Heidi are two of the premier talents in the
dance world today. Together they will star in the up coming motion
picture scheduled for release in 2008, "For Love and Dance." There are
hints that Benji may portray the King of Dance Fred Astair in a soon to
be release motion picture as well. Dancing runs in his family, he is
the son of Swing champion Buddy Schwimmer. Buddy is a dance event
organizer and competed on the legendary Merv Griffin Show for the TGIF
Dance Contest. Together Heidi and Benji are magical. They will share
their dance skills the entire weekend as they will perform and instruct
dance workshops. It all kicks off on Thursday, June 7th at Mirelle's,
for the low admission of only $15.00. Located at 170 Post Ave,
Westbury, Long Island, and continues on Friday the 8th at
Deer Park VFW. Please call Louis for pricing on workshops & to
reserve a space in the workshops. Private lessons are also available
with Heidi & Benji. (516) 819 - 9016
Dancing on Television Vs the Real Ballroom
Dancing is getting its just dues on television with the hit shows "So
You Think You Can Dance," "Dancing with The Stars" and "Championship
Ballroom." But that doesn't always translate equally as well in the
social dance scene. Although folks are sitting stationary at home
viewing these shows, the majority haven't ventured out to put their
skills to the dance test. The Untied States continues to lag behind
most other industrialized countries when it comes to exceptance of
social and ballroom dancing. Is the television dance revival a fad? Is
dancing moving up to a newer level? Here is a sad, but real,
concern that could face all the major dance markets.
The morale is very simple - Support your local, regional and national
socials and dance events before they too could disappear.

Hi Ron,
I just got off the phone with both of the owners of the Pavilion (Boca
Raton Florida) and due to issues other than attendance, they have
decided to close. After pouring my heart and soul into the place it's
difficult to grasp the fact that our beautiful Pavilion is now a
memory. If the dance family had been informed of the other issues that
decided the fate of our dance nights, there may have been something
that we could have done to help. The Pavilion is designed for catering
and large events. The person in charge of that area didn't fulfill
their end of the bargain and without the bookings that they expected,
the owners have no choice at this point and must close. It is for sale.
With the proper sales staff it would be a great business. The total
remodeling is beyond beautiful and the dance nights could be built up
again. You know how news travels in our community. If there are any
interested parties please contact pavilion301@aol.com for details.
Ron, thank you for keeping the dance community informed and doing it
with such personal care.
Sincerely.

Who Was Your Inspiration (part 1)
We have a new generation of dancers: some young and some not so
younger, but all in all, they love the hustle. We asked some of the
best hustle dancers in the country the question - who motivated them
when they first started to dance? We wanted to know how did
they learned to hustle dance and whom did they
admire?
Growing up in Pennsylvania, I experienced a dance awakening watching
Floyd Chishom and Nelly Cotto on the Merv Griffin Show (circa 1978).
That gave me the desire to want to compete and grow. I also had the
opportunity to put together a group routine with Lisa Nunziella and the
late Danny Llaurado. Once again this reenergized me and made me work
even harder. Those were times I will never forget.
I hope you enjoy the passionate responses your read below. (part 2
coming soon)

In the mid 70's when Hustle dancing was surfacing, I was fortunate
enough to have
my brother bring his friends to practice at my home which included
BUTCHIE, GABRIEL, LIL DEBBBIE AND BRENDA. These were local dancers who
were
very talented and brought Manhattan moves to Brooklyn. During the
summer, we
would gather either in Linden Park or Bushwick Park and dance until
1AM. One
day, my brother showed me a flyer featuring the dance couple Lourdes
Jones
and Eddie Vega. It wasn't until a few years later that I actually met
them. I was speechless in seeing Lourdes fly in the air and back on her
feet without losing a beat. The same night another young lady walked
onto the floor with such confidence that blew me away. Her mixture of
jazz, ballet and a million dollar smile captivated the audience and
mesmerized me. The artist was Liza Nunziella. That night I
decided to pursue Theater Arts Hustle and become a professional
dancer. I admit that there were other dancers with amazing
talents but these three welcomed me with open arms and passed on their
knowledge in competing, performing and respecting others. Thank you,
guys! I LOVE YOU and owe you so much!!!

Hi Ron,
I've been thinking about this question since I received it. Although
there were some great dance teams out in the 70's and 80's and they all
made an impression on me. My greatest inspiration to partner
dance was watching the old musicals of the 30's and 40's when I was 10
years old. Fred Astaire & Ginger Rodgers are my idles.
I Loved the fun and romance they projected as a team. Their unique
style is untouchable. I try to emulate my own style of Hustle into that
formula. I'm hoping they are smiling down at me saying...........You
go girl!!
Donna DeSimone
>>>>>>>
Hi Ron,
I too was influenced by that same competition on the Merv
Griffen Show with Floyd Chishom and Nelly Cotto and another
couple from Monterey CA, Eli Soto & Sharon...I then was
influenced when in the late 70's watching Dance Fever...My 1st
experience was Ricky Quintana & Lee...wow!!! then I saw Eddie
Vega & Lourdes Jones then Billy Fajardo & Sandra
WOW!!!WOW!!!!WOW!!!!!...Then in 95' at the 1st Hustle USA I
met all the players, Billy Fajardo, Debra Hampton, Arte Phillips, Maria
Torres w/ her then partner Angel Figueroa and so many others
from the New York area...This is when I decided to get some REAL
training in this dance HUSTLE that I loved so so much...These are the
people that inspired me and I feel very blessed to grow up in
this era...To this day I still get training from some of the same
people when we can get together...
ciao my friend,
Keith Gussoni
>>>>>>>
I'm one of the newer (just not younger) ones so, I'd have
to admit that Artie & Joyce motivated me to do and teach
the Hustle.
Dancingly,
Debbie Lynn
>>>>>>>
Eddie Vega & Arte Phillips danced improv at Darien's and it
included a beautiful Star Lift. It was incredible.
Donna Boyle - from the 1st day that I saw her dance at SomePlaceElse,
her bravery has always amazed me. She's never been
afraid of any move anytime anyplace. It's almost
crazy. Experiencing Floyd & Nelly's routine live when
representing Philadelphia on that historical Merv Griffin Show.
Thanks Ron for making me dig out some great memories.

I was just seventeen when I witnessed a couple named Dave &
Cindy dancing at a club called the love Machine. I started taking
lessons with them and they motivated me to keep on dancing, I guess
back then in the early 70s They could see that I had a
great attitude for dancing. I was still in High
School when I started to go out dancing and would see great dancers
that motivated me with there attitude for dancing like Diane
Nardone, and Marie T, John M, Melvin, Back in the day THEY HAD
ATTITUDE. That Look gave me the inspiration that I needed and the
passion for the hustle.

Hi Everyone. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that attended IHSC
2007 the weekend of May 3rd in Miami, for making it one of the most
memorable gigs of my 31 year DJ career. As you all know, this was my
first year back since 2005, and your warm welcome backs? were greatly
appreciated. From the opening party Thursday night thru the farewell
party Sunday night, the energy, music, vibe and enthusiasm was more
than contagious, it was perpetual.
During the Friday night party, I got to put on my MC hat and have the
privilege of introducing Luis & Mary Rosa and their Starlite
Kids, who thrilled us with a fantastic Hustle and Salsa dance
performance. It was also my honor to lead everyone in singing Happy
Birthday to my idol, Frank Pellucci, on his 76th birthday.
Along with my great Salsa DJ partner Henry Knowles and local Miami DJ
Noel Colon, we put the legend? back in the legendary pool parties. You
both have my greatest appreciation and respect. The weather and the
facilities were as close to perfect as you can get. But it was you, the
dancers (major representation from the tri-state area!!) that made the
4-day marathon so inspiring and so memorable.
I hope to see you all at Millennium Hustle Il Campanello Saturday, June
2nd for an IHSC reunion party (All are welcome). If not, I look forward
to playing at the next major Hustle event, Donna Boyle™s
Disco America July 6-8 in Atlantic City.
Whatever the future may hold, we™ll always have Miami 2007!!
Yours in music

Hi Ron,
Just wanted you to know what a great time I had at the Miami IHSC. -
Even though events ran behind schedule the overall event was
great. The show was awesome! Many well deserved
congratulations to Donna Desimone and Derrick Allen on their lifetime
achievement award. Donna was very gracious poised in her
acceptance speech. Derrick again showed why he is one of the
best Hustle dancers and performers - EVER!!!! - His speech showed what
a classy and humble guy he really is - and his tribute to his wife
Lynnette touched everyone so much he had everyone in
tears!! (both men and women!). He is such an
inspiration to the dance community and he makes me proud to
say I'm a Hustle dancer!!!!
Take care and keep up the good work.

Hi Ron,
As you know last fall Kim Vanaman started treatment for breast
cancer. She did finish chemotherapy and radiation therapy and
in March the doctors were satisfied with the results. Needless to say
Kim was thrilled and while she never stopped teaching throughout the
treatments, her energy waned and her trademark long hair
disappeared. She continued to work her full time job
and was still the full time Mom she is. She refused to allow
the disease or the treatments get her down and somehow someone from the
dance community was nearby to take her places, have meals ready or to
tell her a joke. She appreciated everything the
dance community did on her behalf and I noticed it was hard for her to
at first accept the outpouring of love she received because at times it
was such a flood of love, care and concern.
Her first public appearance since then was at Mad Jam in March and,
wearing her Grandfather's fedora, she taught and judged and had a
ball. I believe she was overwhelmed at the wonderful
reception she received there. This past weekend she competed
for the first time since the diagnosis last year at the International
Hustle and Salsa Competition in Miami. She and
I competed in Pro-Am Classic Hustle and World
Pro-Am Hustle. In each of the competitions we
finished second. While I'm extremely happy for myself, I'm
happier for and more proud of Kim and how hard she worked to
keep dancing like nothing ever happened. Make no mistake, Kim
always had her "game face" on from the time we started practicing while
she was still receiving radiation therapy. She has a will not
just to survive but to truly live life to the fullest. As I
think back on the past 11 months, I am filled with awe and respect for
Kim as she blazed a way for the rest of us to follow should we have
walk the same path. Best regards,
Beth Baird

Dancing with the Stars - comes to Long Island
Its time to get up close and personal. If your a fan of the award
winning television show "Dancing With The Stars" (like 28 million
viewers) then you don't want to miss this special night of dancing.
Dance Champion Tony Dovolani will be performing along with the
beautiful Elena Grinenko (2006 National Professional American Style
Rhythm Champions) on May 26th in Long Island, NY. It doesn't get any
hotter then that. Tony not only performs, teaches and choreographs but
has many Television and movie credits including playing the bad boy
dancer in "Shall We Dance," starring Richard Gere. Tony has been a
regular on Dancing with the Stars since the second season when he
exploded towards the finish line with sexy Stacy Keibler from the WWE.
They appeared to be a shoe-in but the viewers saw it differently. The
following season Sara Evans was his partner but she bowed out due to
family issues and this year, Tony was matched up with Leeza
Gibbons. In addition he has appeared in four episodes of
"America's Ballroom Challenge" and has made appearances on "Jimmy
Kimmel Live," "Entertainment Tonight," "Inside Edition," "CMT Insider,"
"Ellen: The Ellen DeGeneres Show." Tony continues to perform weekly on
the show as he appears in many of the group dance numbers. He has also
been a member of the summer "Dancing with the Stars Tour," traveling to
cities all over the country. On May 26th, by his side will be the
incredible Elena Grinenko who will be making her Long Island
appearance. She has also appeared on "America's Ballroom
Challenge" but has had her hands full with her students on Dancing With
The Stars. NBA superstar, Clyde Drexler, towered over her but they made
a good run. Last season, political talk show host, Tucker Carlson, got
bumped early proving he had no rhythm and two left feet. Together Tony
and Elena are magical. You don't want to miss this special performance.

giant chandeliers; and had a blast!
Attendees from all over the Nation convened at the Milwaukee Hilton
City Center last weekend, and danced under the Chandeliers, competed,
socialized, ate, took workshops and danced some more. Special welcome
and thanks to the couple who came in all the way from London, England
and Scotland (yes Scotland) to attend their very first dance convention
in the USA. What a treat!

Dance Central Station
The first Dance Central Station was an incredible experience. It was
one of those nights when you don't get to bed until 4AM but you say, it
was well worth it. The Prince of Hustle - Billy Marti - should be
Knighted. Friends and colleagues came out to hear singing
sensation Elsie perform, experience a dance fashion show "Dance
Couture," witness a dance contest where all the attendees 'were the
judge' and dance the night away.
You Be The Judge, dance contest featured 8 dynamic couples strutting
their stuff. DJ Nelson "Paradise" Roman hand picked the songs and had
everyone tapping along. The majority of votes by the attendees selected
Jesus and Robert as their first place winners and the recipients of
passes to this years Discoamerica.
Co-host Donna Boyle performed a reunion exhibition with her original
partner David Padilla. Together, they won on the national syndicated
Dance Fever show. This marked a dance reprise some 25 years gone by.
Guests were treated to a hot & cold buffet, cold drinks and
bubbly. The brand new 2007 line of dance wear by Couture Dance was
modeled in a wonderful fashion show by Lemington Ridley, an upcoming
name to watch.
Dance exhibitions were performed by National Dance Champions Kelvin
Roche and Loriann Greenhouse, Luis & Mary Ann Rosa's Latin
Dance Connection featuring the amazing Starlite Kids and dance Icons
Nelly Cotto and Kenny Gonzales. The intensity of the night was off the
chart. Dancers from all different generations were on hand to promote
the up coming Discoamerica taking place July 5th to the 8th in Atlantic
City, NJ. This is the 9th edition of Discoamerica, which is currently
the longest running hustle competition of its kind. The dance weekend
returns to the popular Clarion Hotel in Atlantic City. Reserve your
room today: 800-782-782 -9237
This years special dinner show is headlined by the incomparable Vince
Montana Jr, who will be performing LIVE.
Congratulations to Billy Marti for raising the bar and making this a
stellar night of dancing. Thanks to all the wonderful dancers that were
on hand to make this such an incredible time: David Padilla, LoriAnne
Greenhouse, Steve Neeren, Donna Boyle, Smitty, Jerry Hobbs, Disco Dave
Sarul, Elizabeth Darchi, Luis & Mary Ann Rosa, Roberto Pagan,
Lori Brizzi, John Festa, Donna Roesel, Rob Finocchio, Kelvin Roche,
Louy Orlando, Trisha Caballero, Nelly Cotto, Chuck Fetta, John
Merisier, Tariq Brown, Bobby Morales, Kenny Gonzales, Mariann Gonzales,

Dear Mr. Bess,
I turned 54 last fall. My closest friend since grammar school passed
away before she reached 50 years old. You were kind enough to
acknowledge her warmth and beauty in your news letter. Vicki Sue
Robinson never forgot her friends. Even when she had the number one
song in the country - Turn the Beat Around - she always came home to
Philadelphia. Vicki never lost sight of what is most important in her
life. We were so proud of her and miss her to this day. She was a kind
gentle soul and I know she is singing for the angels above. Thank you
for remembering her.
God Bless,
Marie (class of 1971)

Dance Central Station was without far the most exciting
social event of the year so far. Not only did you have your local dance
divas but also had new jersey, philly and
Long island's super stars. I like to take this opportunity to thanks
all those who made
this night a spectacular one. First I would like to express my thanks
to Stepping out
studios staff Talia , Suzie, Benjamen and Tommy for believing
in me and giving the opportunity and guidance to bring Dance Central
Station to life. I would also like to
Thank all the professional that gave a star studded performance which
included world
Champion "Kelvin Roche and Lori Ann Greenhouse", "Luis and Mary Rosa
and the Starlite kids", and the all time divas "Kenny Gonzalez and
Nelly Cotto". I would like to express my Special thanks to Lemington
Riddley of Dancecouture for giving such an elegant and memorable
fashion show. Nelson " Paradise' Roman for spinning the hottest dance
jams and Steve Neeren with his West Coast Swing groove. I would also
like to give two thumbs up James Canora for such a delicious cuisine.
Lets not forget the voice of the Dance community, Ron Bess. Without him
most of us would be in the dark on where to go dancing and who's who in
the dance community. Freestyle's superstar
"fascination". You still got what it takes. And most of all the
beautiful and talented Donna Boyle and David Padilla for that wonderful
reunion dance. Donna, thank you for joining me on the maiden voyage of
"Dance Central Station". And last but not least all those wonderful
students, friends and dancers for attending this event and making it a
memorable one. I couldn't have had a successful evening without you.
Love you all
BILLY MARTI

Hi Ron,
I wanted to compliment you on the great write up on Evie that was
published in last weeks dancetalk. I hope your share my letter with
your readers. I met Evie at Michaels in Bensalem last year and found
her to be a delight. But as you had written she is not one to speak
about her dance background or brag in any way. I never knew she was
such and accomplished dancer. Great job, thanks for sharing this
information. you both make this dance community such a great place to
hang out in.
