'Spot Light'
Billy Marti

Whether you're at a dance social or major competition, this hustle dancer jumps in and out of the limelight at the drop of a hat. His charisma and high energy instantaneously grabs your attention. He truly has hustle DNA, mixing street dance, jazz and ballet into one. Billy Marti, AKA "Prince Of Hustle," is the unsung hero in the hustle community.
Billy is old school but on the cutting edge, (let me rephrase that), the bleeding edge of contemporary hustle dancing. His exciting, crisp style of hustle is high energy: classic with long lines and eye catching speed. He gets noticed and it's created a buzz with flocks of students attending his advanced level class at Stepping Out dance studio in NYC. Billy not only performs and competes but loves to share his love for dancing with others.
He has created the first "Central Station Dance" event taking place April 27th at Stepping Out. His mission: to give back to fellow dancers, help nurture new enthusiastic dancers while expressing his passion for the hustle.
Billy started dancing at the age of 18. He first attended the "Phil Black Dance Studio" in New York City thanks to a work/study program. With great interest he quickly mastered the fundamentals of dance and within a year realized he had found what would be his life's passion.  As his repertoire expanded to include other forms such as ballet so did his experience with other dance studios like "Broadway Dance Center," THEATRE DANCE AND STEPS.  Within a year, Bill was hired with his first dance partner, Nancy Melius to perform in Israel as a "Fame" dancer with Robert Guillaume and Albert Hague. During that same year, Billy was a featured performer in Evelyn 'Champagne' King's video entitled "Action".  Billy then performed in New York's first dance fashion show for LA Crasia gloves with Artie Phillips and Nancy Melius. Continuing on the professional dance circuit, Billy performed a solo spot with Jennifer Lopez in a promotional feature for Chess King clothing.  He earned additional professional credits by dancing in major nightclubs with "Freestyle's" singing artists  "Corina, "Fascination," and "Giggles."  Over the years, Billy also toured with "Compania Folklorica Latina," a national dance company in which he received thousands of letters from adoring fans. This tireless dancer has accumulated quite a resume in films and TV including ,"Funny Valentine," "Alphabet City," "WB11 Morning News" and "FOX 5 News."
One night, when while watching a competition at a nightclub, Billy was inspired when he discovered his new love for hustle theater arts. He met the late, Wanda Soto who began teaching him in the art of partnering. He soon began dancing and performing with Hustle Hall Of Famer's Lisa Nunziella, Maria Torres, Nelly Cotto and Billy Fajardo. Along with these dance pioneers, Billy fondly recalls the counseling and direction he received from his hero the late and truly great, Eddie Vega.
Billy has also received wonderful recognition for his talented choreography. He has choreographed for "Eleganza Italiana," at the Mariiott Marquis in NY, productions at one some of New York's more famous nightclubs, " EL BARRIO USA" at Caroline's comedy club and his work with Mario Vazquez of "American Idol."
Billy puts great pride in his ability to thoroughly prepare students for showcase and dance competitions by articulating a music and choreography mix that enhances the student's individual style and thus complementing their strengths.
The prince is a regular at all the hustle dance competitions where he competes with his students, professional partners, Jack & Jills and performs in showcases.
Once again, he is selflessly going all out to put together a dance party with all the bells and whistles. To help support Disco America and ring the bell for hustle dancing, Billy has organized "Central Dance Station." This unsung hero has put together a night of dance that will have a line forming around the building. For all the details, check below under April 27th. Your get to see Billy in action. After watching Billy dance you'll reach the inescapable conclusion that this guy loves to hustle.

Letters to the Editor (some of the feedback from 'meeting Mr/Miss right)

Hi Ron,
My opinion on finding your soulmate on the dance floor.  I absolutely know you can find your soulmate on the dance floor as I have. And you can dance professionally with that person as I do.  Whether it will work or not has nothing to do with dancing or the scene. It has to do with what kind of people you are from the heart. If you are well grounded people and have a strong sense of self, mutual respect, and emotional maturity, you can have a fulfilling, very rewarding relationship working with your partner, no matter what the career may be.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hi Ron,
I also think or at least hope it is possible.... particularly because you share a passion. Why are some of the very famous TV and movie dance couples married for life? It is the same as in any recreational venue. I know of other activity organizations where both are very involved in the organization or activity and this is a large connection for them. However, it does take a lot of strength, character, maturity and definitely accountability  to handle things if the relationship does not work out as well as acceptance. Communication - which is not a surprise - and boundaries also help. Again as with anything,  dance can be a shared life goal or recreation.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Ron , I met Stacy at Carol and Andres' about 3 years ago.  Thought there was something there just by looking in her eyes and the touch of her hand, but the timing wasn't exactly right. Then a year later she appeared at Michael's Cafe, while we were dancing I felt something that was too good to ignore. So during the night I asked her about the other places she went to dance the answer was LaLuna on Fridays. So, me being an incurable romantic went there and no Stacy!  The following Tuesday she re-appeared at Michael's' . I told her about me going to LaLuna and how disappointed I was that she didn't appear so this time I made it a date which included a pre dance drink at my house.
This time she showed up. .......... we have been together ever since and I don't ever plan to have it any other way. I just can't figure out which I enjoy more, watching her move on the dance floor or dancing with her, luckily I have both.
As for the other remarks about relationships in the dance community. We both have previous relationships throughout, and both still have very good friends because of it. It is hard to be in a relationship with a non-dancer when the feeling and the love for the Dance is in you. In my case I still have a lot of great friends I've met on the dance floor and dated and we remain friends.
R.M.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

To Mate or Not To Mate??.
'Mr. Right Now' was an established, highly accomplished, regular at Michael's Cafe, while 'Ms. Always Right' was an unknown, 2nd year rookie.  Neither of them was familiar with other. They both had their established circle of friends and dance peers so their paths never crossed.  That is until one fateful evening during a mock leg contest among the dancers at Michaels.  She was a contestant, he a judge. His vote for her during this contest became the catalyst for conversation, drinks and dances over the ensuing weeks.
When the Universe decides the time is right, paths will cross regardless of where you are.  Apparently, the time, the place and the people were all in superlative alignment. Two and a half years later Mr. Right and Ms. Right are still having a blast.  Had there been preconceived notions about dating within the dance community, their fate could have been significantly altered.
I attribute the success for their (or any) relationship based on a combination of a mutual love of the dance and for fellow dancers; reciprocal trust and respect; sharing your significant other on the dance floor; realistic expectations and simply keeping it fun.  There is no room for jealously, possessiveness, insecurity and above all no drama, no drama, NO DRAMA!  One of he perks of dating a dancer is a shared passion with someone you are passionate about.  The down side is living in a fishbowl where your every move is scrutinized.
Ron, as the disco ball turns, you can attest to the joys of many successful dance relationships as well as to the adversity born of the not so triumphant ones.  Should the unspeakable happen, this particular couple has agreed to make every effort to remain cordial, thus maintaining a tranquil existence in the dance environment.
By establishing too many boundaries about dating or mating a dancer, you may have, unknowingly, danced with the one that got away.
Ms. Always Right

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Hello Ron,

I'd like to comment on some emails re: meeting a potential partner at dance socials/clubs. I agree that it certainly is possible to meet the right person on
the dance floor. But my feeling is that if you are really serious about meeting the right guy/girl, dancing should be only part of the many things you do to meet people. Getting trapped into the dance social scene may limit your choice of candidates for dating. For those of you going out social dancing 4-5 days a week, you might consider reducing it and expanding your horizons to other activities while still enjoying dance. If you live in a big city theres no excuse. Get out there and expand your horizons; social events, museums, art openings, single group activities,
lectures, hiking trips, wine tastings etc.  And if you cant bring yourself to leave the dance scene, then pick up a new dance or try a different school and socialize with other dancers. Being well rounded will just make you all that more interesting for a potential candidate. And you might even be able to teach them a few moves. Whatever you choose, make sure its right for you and enjoy!

Finding Mr/Miss Right on the dance floor?

The question continues to elude us, "can you find that special person when you go out dancing." Although that is not everyone's objective, for many, dancing is the modern day vehicle implemented to help make the 'real' connection.
We all hear different comments, usually negative, that discard the thought of making a connection via dancing. You know like: your never meet someone good at a club. If you want to find a boyfriend don't date someone from the dance scene, or dancers are to cliquey don't waste your time....the scenarios go on and on. Dancing appears to be a wonderfully healthy way to meet new friends and maybe..... that significant partner.
To better understand the odds and the likelihood of meeting Mr or Miss Right, we have polled some of our experienced readers (the ones that have achieved success and some that are still searching).  Our quest was to answer that mystical question:  Can you meet that soul mate, life mate, Mr. it or Miss Right, at a dance social or club? I think your enjoy these candid responses.
R.B.
><><><><><><>

Dating someone you meet in the dance circle can be good and bad. The good thing is that you share a common passion and can really have a great relationship through sharing the passion of dance. It can be fun, exciting and you can make some wonderful friends together. The bad part is when you have a disagreement it can really affect the relationship depending upon the level of that relationship. To take the relationship into a competitive dance, or professional dance level, I would never recommend. You're with that person constantly and you have to compete or perform like everything is just wonderful, when maybe it's really not. If I've learned anything in life it's that everyone needs their own space, and with a dance partnership that's a very hard space to find. If the relationship can stay on a social dance level, then that might be something I would say can be very special.
S.M.
><><><><><><>

I think you can meet "the one" at a club or social.I do, however, think that
people should be selective and not get "passed around."  It's great when your significant other can dance. It's a wonderful thing that can be shared and enjoyed. But, hopefully dancers choose their life partners on WHO they are and not how well they can dance. In a way, meeting someone out dancing is a GREAT screening process too.Usually dancers will warn other dancers when "danger" is near!!!
D.S.
><><><><><><>

I have dated a number of ladies over the years that I have met by dancing. Overall, it  has been great. The problems occur when you take your dance issues home with you. I think you have to separate dancing, your job, relationships and friends. Once they begin to overlap the problems begin. If you date and compete in dancing its like dating someone at work. It creates issues. Dating and social dancing seem to work best. Once you become a professional dancer, perform or compete or both, it puts more stress on the relationship. Sad to say, not many of those relationships last very long. If you meet the perfect dance partner I think it is best not to date them as well. If you decide that dating is more important which it might be then don't compete or take your dancing to serious. If you do both, the blame game begins. I guess it depends what is more important to you?
J. T.
><><><><><><>

I think it's very possible to meet your Mr/Miss Right at a dance social or club. As a 20-year member of the NJ/NY dance scene, I've met many wonderful dancers....and possible girlfriends. I've had a different approach. I've steered away from possible partners who have dated the other male dancers I knew. I envisioned my girlfriend to be out of the circle of dancers I saw on a weekly basis. When I met someone from a few states away, it was a refreshing and pleasant surprise. My advice is to expand the locations where you dance......it might open up many new possibilities.
S.S.
><><><><><><>

Dancing is a great way to meet new friends but many say your never meet a good partner in or at a social or club?To answer this question in one word the answer would be YES, it is possible. Some of you that are reading this couldprobably write  a book on this. My perception isthat there aremany things inadance social or club that can easilymake relationships go wrong. There for I would suggest laying down some ground rules early on especiallyfor when the couple comes out to social dance. In the beginning of the relationship I would recommend reviewing them often. I could go on and on but the bottom line here is thatthe couple has to take extra timeand effort for it towork. I would also suggest taking the high ground if it doesn't work out. Most of us have seen couple's break up. We have all been there. This can put a lot of unneeded stresson the whole dance group, especiallywhen one trashes the other. But just because it didn't work out, it doesn't mean that someone is a bad person or thatsome how our dance community caused it to fail. We all know that sometimes it not meant to be.But as anoptimist, I know that sometimes itis. In the time thatI have been dancingI have met so many nice people. I have made a lot offriends. œI truly value your friendships.? To sum it all up; I do think it is possible to findMr. or Miss Right, at a dance social or club. To all the loving couple's that are from oor dance world, you have shown us that it can,Ienvyyou guys!

Mad Jam was .................Out of this World

The 5th annual MadJam was nothing less then spectacular. The dancers were brilliant, the music was non stop and there was never a dull moment.
Something tells me there is going to be a 6th, 7th, 10th, 20th and 50th annual MadJam....and why not, the fabric of this event combines, great caring people that listen and keep making this event bigger and better.
The surprises kept coming all weekend. With so many highlights, a personal best was watching the adagio performed by David Savoy and Jenya Goremykina. Dancing to Ribbon In The Sky, the incredible overhead lifts had the audience mesmerized.
Finalist from "So You Think You can Dance", Heidi, was on hand to teach, judge and chat with fellow dancers. Right when you think you have seen it all, the spot light competitions held on Saturday night had heads spinning. Jordan Frisbee & Tatiana Mollmann had the ballroom room in the palm of their hands.  The huge dance floor was packed with non stop dancing featuring the most exciting hand and swing dancers from both coasts. Not to be out done, the hustle room bumped it up under the knowledgeable hands of DJs Nino Torre, Bobby Gerard, Vicki Kay and Brian Gallagher. The hustle attendance has reached a new high. The room was packed until the wee hours. And how can you not make mention of the midnight buffet. What a way to top off the evening. Some of the finest competitors in hustle spun all night long with the pros: Fred & Tina Price, Billy Marti, Caren Casper, Stephanie Risser, Christopher Hemmer, Joanne Piazza, Diane Nardone, Gary Ulaner, Kim Vanaman, Wingo Hom, Dara Patrusky, Pat McDonnell, Glen Miller, George Garcia, Roberto Pagan, Shawn Brennan, Arte Phillips, Donna Boyle, Rick Barney, Rob Finocchio, Joe Kerner, Silvana Gallagher, john Merisier, Drew Axelrod, Debbie Lynn, Ken Roesel, Mary Keegan, Danny McGee, Daniel Odhner, Bill Poulter, Jamison Kilburn, Lori Brizzi, Barry Durand, Pat McConnell, hazel & Tybaldt Ulrich........

Letters To The Editor

Hi Ron,
Surfing for places to dance, I came across...Dance Talk , Very nice of you to mention the passing of Mrs. Smolen.  I had met her several times when she attended the Hub Ballroom in Edelstein, Illinois, and almost every Labor Day when we attended Taste of Polonia in Chicago. Not only was she a dancer... she was also the Mother of Chicago area band leader Ron Smolen. He has a great dance orchestra and we follow his orchestra around a lot.   he has a web site also...  http://www.ronsmolenorchestra.com - I have forwarded him a copy of this letter.
