Hey Ron, I want to thank you for always keeping us up on the
latest opportunities in dancing, whether it be social, competitive,
performance or whatever. Just thought I'd let you know Patty McConnell
and I are heading to Albuquerque, NM next month to be taking part as
extras in the filming of that new movie, "Love N' Dancing"
(starring Amy Smart, Tom Malloy & Billy Zane)! We're very
excited about having the opportunity to be a part of something that
will really expose this dance to the masses in a way which has never
been done before, and it was through your newsletter that we first
heard about it and were able to get a leg up on signing up for
it! Thanks again for all you do for the dance community!

Hey Ron,
This is Alisa Taylor from Virginia Beach. I saw you had a birthday wish
for Alan Garcia. Oh my gosh, I danced with Al from 1979 to 1983?? in
Queens. We danced in contests - fashion shows - danced in
shows at many NY city clubs. I moved to Virginia in the fall of 1984 to
attend college, fell in love and planted myself here. I have lost
contact with Al. He was special person and I have wondered many a night
how he was, where he lives and if he still dances? I can't tell you how
excited I became when I saw him listed (hoping it is the same Alan
Garcia). Could you please, pretty please, put me in touch
with him. I can't tell you enough how important this would be for
me.............
Your the best,
Alisa

Dear Ron
A bit back, my friend and student Beth Baird wrote a wonderful, lovely
letter about my return to competitive dancing. I wanted to
say that it has always been and is truly a pleasure to work with and
compete with her; "work" with Beth is lots of fun!
In addition, having her committment, helped me to get back to the
competitive floor. Having a goal, and support is very good
"medicine", not just motivation. So I send many thanks and
congratulations on the competitive fruition of her hard work, to my
friend, Beth Baird. On another note, Beth was instrumental in
organizing support for me and my family during my treatment for Breast
Cancer. It made a huge positive impact and I believe was very
instrumental in my "surviving" treatment and my successful ongoing
recovery. I am truly blessed with the support from Beth and
the dance community and cannot say thank you often enough.
Thank you. I am happy to report that I have been given the
"all clear" from my MRI and my physical thera
pist has given me the go ahead to start getting back into shape
again. So I'm not "done" but I sure am heading in the right
direction.
Thank you all, love, Kim Vanaman

Hello,
I would like to say that Maria Torres and Kenny Gonzalez did a
wonderful job on So You Think You Could Dance. They really
portrayed what hustle should be. The true style of hustle. And many of
us are very thankful for that. It just goes to show that we don't have
to let the correct stlye of hustle die or the music from that era. They
have shown that the younger generation loves it just the same.
The other people I am very thankful to are Maryann and Luis
Rosa. They have shown the same thing with their troop of kids, and they
also show it when they perform. Its so enjoyable to watch the true
style of hustle, hustle the way it should be. And when they add in the
excitement of the lifts, they really bring the true style of
hustle. For those professionals that try
and add west coast swing and other dances into hustle, they are only
allowing the true hustle to die. And hustle is such a beautiful dance
and should never die. West coast swing is a beautiful dance in itself,
but it shouldn't be added into hustle. Then you feel like you are
watching swing and get the swing feeling and not the hustle feeling.
I'm just using swing as one example. But these dancers shouldn't place
before someone doing true hustle. So my hats off to those professionals
like Maria Torres, Kenny Gonzalez, Maryann and Luis Rosa, Billy
Marty,... who truly give us the heart and soul of hustle. There is
nothing like it.
I am a dance professional myself. My forte is not hustle, but
I can appreciate and know the heart and soul of true hustle.
DNY

thank Bobby, the love of my life. If it wasnt for meeting him over a
year ago, none of this would have even been possible.

Hi Ron,
I wanted to share with you my first peek at the hustle dance. There is
not one person I can credit but basically a television show that as a
young teen I was blown away by. American Bandstand. I never missed a
Saturday morning show. I guess corny considered by today's standards? I
loved that show. Not so much for Dick Clark but to watch the dancers.
The dancers had that California style, nevertheless, I saw
the raw hustle done there first and thats what got me started. Ever
since, I have learned and practiced and think back to those early years
how basic the dance was but for sure, thats where I first found out
about touching dancing and the hustle.
Thank you,
Lloyd Thomas - S.C.
>>>>>>>>>>
Good Morning Ron,
Regarding Who inspired me to hustle?, am I the only one who remembers
Jon Devlin? The year was 1978. My friend Sonny Simon and I
were out for an evening. I wanted to go to the
movies. He wanted to try the free hustle lesson a Jon Devlins
Dancercise. (The space at Columbus Circle subsequently known
as Paul Pellicoros Dancesport for many years before his
recent move downtown). I figured Id give it a shot. During
the free lesson, the guy I was dancing with said Youre going to be
GREAT? and my ego loved it. That was a moment for
me! I decided to bite and took an intro series of 6 lessons. Then, in
January of 1979, the forces came together. At the
very time I quit my then thankless job, Jon offered a special in his
studio: for January only, you can sign up for a years worth of
unlimited hustle lessons for $100. So I did. So did
a lot of other folks I havent seen in years. And we went to a
lesson every night and went dancing after that. We lived and
breathed hustle and I was hooked. During this time, btw, Jon did the
most beautiful Samba exhibition at his studio I have ever seen.
It brought tears to your eyes. I have always been
told that Jon Devlin is the guy who originally brought hustle to NY. I
dont know if its true but I believe its certainly as likely as the next
story. He was one fine dancer. Last I heard he was
in Ohio. If I knew where he was I would thank him now!

were an inspiration. My fears of making mistakes and looking
out of place were calmed by her assurances that everyone starts
somewhere?. I also have to give credit to my friend Michelle,
who saw my choppy? attempts at a 4 count Hustle and persuaded me to
learn how to dance it the right way and learn from the best “
Diane Nardone. I took one class with Diane and was hooked.
Watching Diane dance motivates me to work on my dance skills and to
enjoy the dance. Another great motivator is the extended family you
acquire when you dance “ so many nice people who are always
up for one more dance and the advanced people who graciously give you
their time and advice. Thank you all.

A Break Thru
For a number of years, hustle dancing has not received its
dues on national television. Since the days of Dance Fever, Disco Step
By Step, Soap Factory, Don Kirshner, Soul Alive...... television has
forgotten our dance. In many cases, it has been
misrepresented. Some viewers relate hustle to a dated form of Saturday
Night Fever or line dancing. I'm excited to share with you
that the hit television show,
"So You Think You Can Dance" will break the curse. They have recruited
Hustle Hall Of Fame members Maria Torres along with Kenny Gonzalez to
teach and choreograph a hustle routine for some of the remanding 14
contestants. Tune in this Wednesday night, July 11th, 8PM (EST) on the
Fox network to watch some of the talented dancers perform a New York
style hustle routine performed to an authentic hustle song edited by
George Garcia. Be sure to watch the show and vote to show your support
for the hustle. High five to Maria, Kenny and George.
DanceTalk 7th Anniversary winning letters (part 1 of 2)
Thank you to those readers that shared their thoughts and inspirations
with us.
All the letters were wonderful and thought provoking. Here is the first
part, " Who motivated you to learn the hustle? Who inspired
you to dance? "
I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Next week we will post the rest
of the winners. Stay tuned.

Hi Ron:
From the instant I saw the hustle (about 1973 or
so) - mostly in basement parties in my neighborhood I have loved the
hustle - I felt it almost from the beginning. In previous
e-mails I told you I went to many clubs around Queens and Long Island
it's not till I started going to Alexis Dance Studio and started seeing
people like Maria Torres, Kenny Gonzalez, Eddie Vega, John Merisier,
David Padilla, Lourdes Jones, Nellie Cotto, Lisa Nunziella, Ricky
Quintana, Butchie Everett, Arte Phillips, Keith Merriwether, Scott
Nurse, etc.............did I truly learn and master the hustle - I am a
dancer that only has to look at steps and picks them up - a lot by feel
- but I would have to say the people that most inspired me were Maria
Torres and Butchie - if you want to be the best you have to be inspired
by the best. I even went out a lot with Butchie, Roma, John
to a lot of clubs like Better Days, Ice Palace, Tracks, etc.

Ron,
I was too young to go to night clubs but would go to school dances and
to the Y where they held monthly dances. I really learned a lot about
hustle dancing by watching the TV show on channel 11, Soul is Alive
every saturday morning we would watch and write down the steps. Many of
the best dancers would be on and they would have dance contests and the
best dancers would compete. Looking back I remember seeing Miquel
Marrero, Maria tores and David Padella dancing on the show. It was very
exciting but we didn't have a video taping machine back then so you
would watch it and try to practice the moves while they were still
fresh in your head. I would invite my friend over Angel and we would
watch together and practice. she would kill me for telling you this but
that was about 29 years ago! I never had a partner to practice with
like others but I always enjoyed dancing in the city and in Queens.
Thanks for letting me share my memories.

Dear Ron,
This is a great question - one I often ask dancers when I meet them for
the first time. I got hooked on dancing when I was 4 years
old. After a prolonged absence, my father came home from the
Merchant Marines in his dress blues. My mother was playing an
Engelbert Humperdinck ballad on her prized Fisher stereo. My
father came in, heard the music and did a few twinkle steps.
He saw me watching him and made me stand on his shoes while he held my
hands and walked -- danced, in my mind --around the room in time to the
music. My young mind made the connection between how his feet
were moving and the rhythm of the music, and I was
hooked!
I eventually ended up living in Los Angeles, where I learned
the Latin Hustle in 1977 and danced until 1980, when I began to travel
the world. In 1983, I finally "landed" in Philadelphia, eager
to dance again. After doing some "research" (club hopping), I
heard about a place called Reflections in the Radisson near the
Philadelphia airport that had a hustle dance every Thursday
night. I went the next Thursday, scanned the
room, and spotted a couple on the crowded dance floor
doing the hustle. They returned to a table where another
gentleman was already sitting.
I went over to their table and asked the lady if I could dance with her
friend. She said, "Of course," and his face lit up with a big
smile. We picked a spot on the floor and started to
dance - if you could call it that! After my 3-year
hiatus, it looked more like a 5-minute accident!
LOL! He was very gracious and thanked me anyway,
and I returned to my chair. On the next
song, the other gentleman sitting at their table came over and, without
a word, held out his hand to me in an invitation to
dance. That man was Andre Phelps, and I have been
dancing with him ever since.
Thanks for asking,
Carole Phelps

Hi Ron,
I started to hustle dance at around the age of 16. Friends invited me to
the Soap Factory Discotheque, in Palisades New Jersey. Performing live
was the Andre' True Connection (best known for their monster hit More
More More). On stage she sung with her dance troop performing the
hustle along side of her. This was the first time I had ever seen
anything like it before. I was so impressed by this formation dance
team, which included George Velazquez, Mia, Heather, and Craig Yee. At
that moment, I realized what I wanted to do with my dancing.
Coincidentally, years later, after retiring from dancing with the Dance
Dimensions, I was fortunate enough to partner with one of the members
of Andrea True's dancers, George Velazquez. We were dancers
with the Ralph Lew Dance Company. How ironic that one of the
individuals who inspired me to perform, turned out to be one of my
dance partners.

Hey Ron,
I love your newsletter and think this is a great question for your
readers. I enjoyed reading in the last few issues how others learned
the hustle. For me it was simple. I would pal around with two buddies
named Ben and "Big" Tony. We would mostly go to bars where they had
live bands playing. We loved the disco sound and we knew there would be
plenty of girls where ever this band played "White Heat". They played
lots of funk like Average White Band, Cameo and Commodores along the
jersey shore. In between their sets they would have a DJ spin records
and thats when couples would dance. There was a guy that I would watch
and he knew all the steps and girls would just about line up to dance
with him. His name was Len. He was the best around at that time, I
think around 1975. He was very tall, maybe about 6 foot 1, one of the
tallest guy I ever saw do the hustle. People would just stand back to
watch him work the floor. A style of the Latin hustle with incredible
foot work. Eventually, we moved on to clubs that only had Disc jockeys
and I never saw Len again but he was the one that got me hooked on
doing the hustle.
