Top Hat - Grand Opening
The long awaited night was a major hit. Greeted in tuxedo's, the three
owners, invited a huge crowd to their brand new dance studio located in
northeast Philadelphia. Danny McGee, Jamison Kilburn and Rob Finocchio
presented the all new Top Hat to a packed house. DJ Mark spun the tunes
from ballroom to swing, salsa and some hustle in between. Located in
the Bustleton Somerton Shopping Center, the studio features a floating
dance floor surrounded by mirrored walls. The Studio staff were
introduced to the attendees including Michele Moyer, Nina Feldman and
Joe Kernan. The bubbly was kept flowing and guests were treated to a
cocktail party an evening of food, beverages and dance. There were many
out of town guests as well as local professionals on hand to join in
the festivities: Steve Neeren, Donna Boyle, Brian Gallagher, Bobby
Morales, Billy Fajardo, Elizabeth Darchi and Louie Orlando. Many of the
local dancers were out to view the new studio, show their support,
share their well wishes and test out the floor: Pat M, Wingo, Scott,
Tom, Fred, Terri, Susan H, Mike & Joan, Susan E, Fran, Mike,
Anita, Joe, Sue, Rosalee, Danielle, Chris, Pat S, Art, Bob, Eileen,
........... The studio is up and running and offering both private and
group lessons. In addition to classes available in Ballroom, there are
lessons in hustle, Latin, Hip Hop, Jazz and a ballet program as well.
The new location is a hit and there is plenty of free parking. For more
details on the new studio and the other Top Hat locations visit http://www.tophatdancestudio.com
Letters to the Editor
Dear Mr. Bess,
I'm a swing and ballroom dancer from Montreal, Canada. I'd love to
learn more than the 6 or so figures of DC Hand Dancing that I currently
know, but no one knows DC Hand Dancing here. I've scoured the internet
for training videos and found two, which I've already worked through. I
can't locate any others. Could you possibly add to your next DanceTalk
newsletter a brief mention that we're looking for any material on DC
Hand Dancing on video/DVD? Even home video footage of people dancing it
would be helpful -- we study several kinds of swing and could probably
figure out the leads by studying them carefully. Any help which you
could give us would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Ron,
"A FATHER'S LOVE"
Last November I lost my father 2 weeks before his 90th birthday. It has
been a great struggle dealing with the pain. He was a wonderful man who
touched a lot of people. It was great to review his life at the
funeral, it was brutal to say good-bye at the cemetary. It was
sad and happy to reminisce his life story with
friends, family and acquaintances. It was tough explaining to my son
all the things he has done before he was born and the 40 years before I
was born. I am writing a journal to cope with the fond memories and the
moments that hold me breathless. Many of my friends have sent plants,
cards, good wishes, money, flowers and great words of comfort. One
amazing backflash that I have was when I visited him for the last time
in NEW YORK i went in the bedroom to say good-bye for now my
Mom was standing behind next to my wife and son I told my father that I
was proud to be his son and he mumbled loud and slowly struggling with
each word stutterring'I-II-I-I-I AM PRPRPRPRPR OUOUOUOUOUUDDD TO BE
YOUR FATHTHTHTHTHTER"
The tears from the entire family haven't stopped.
The greatest most generous terrific gift I received Monday the 22nd of
January was a cd called A FATHERS LOVE
This piece of brilliance not only was delivered at the most perfect
time but it encapsulated my thoughts, my feelings and my emotions. i
spoke to this musical modern day genius---kept secret from
Hollywood---about my strife with this death, I merely mentioned some of
the music that touched me and my pop and his pop. He created a
soundtrack of brilliance. Not only did he give me what I wanted he gave
me songs and photographs that if my father was alive today he would
have loved. If this artist had money or serious connections support you
would see him in the movies, on TV, on the radio etc.
I tip my hat off to NINO TORRE A courageous, compassionate, thoughtful,
generous inspiring individual.
I hope my entire dance community, my friends and family knows not only
is he a great DJ he knows how to package, present and prepare material
that involves music, pictures, graphic, video, sound equipment etc.

Dear Dancetalk,
This past Friday night at IBBG in Long Island, a fundraiser
was put together by Hustle champs Luis & Mary Rosa to
help support a wonderful group of kids from Starlite Dance Studio in
the Bronx. For the past year, they've been training them
in Mambo and Hustle. We were first introduced to them
at last year's New York Hustle Congress, where they wowed the crowd
with a wonderful Hustle routine. Despite frigid temperatures
Friday, the turnout was great and we were all treated to a wonderful
show. First, the kids came out and did a knockout routine, showing off
first their hustle and then mambo skills. This was followed by Luis and
Mary treating us to a great Theater Arts routine. The night was a huge
success!! All the proceeds went towards their continued training and
offsetting the costs of attending IHSC this year in Miami. I know
they'll blow the crowd away!! Thanks to all the volunteers, my DJ
partner Louis Del Prete and everyone who gave generously towards this
wonderful event. Of Course, hats off to Luis and Mary Rosa. Their time
and hard work in bringing hustle to the next generation of dancers is
evident when watching how terrific these kids dance.
I was very proud to be a small part of this evening.
Long live Hustle!!
DJ Bobby Morales
P.S. Congratulations to Danny McGee and Jameson Kilburn on the grand
opening of the new Top Hat Dance Studio in Philadelphia. The new space
is absolutely gorgeous. The Launch party Saturday night was terrific.
As always they were the ultimate hosts. All the best with your new
venture.

Beginner's DVD - basic's on dance
Remember the days when they literally sold plastic feet that you laid
down on the floor to learn how to dance. That only seemed to work well
for the game Twister. There are many choices out there for learning to
dance by viewing a DVD. Some are limited to just one dance while very
costly at the same time. Others just don't get it, the format is not
informative and/or to hard to follow and comprehend. Presto, Beginners
on DVD, the way Mark and Karen teach could be your answer. It doesn't
take a crystal ball as Mark and Karen make it very easy. This is
clearly a no thrills DVD. The focus is on learning. No smoke and
mirrors. Dance Champions Mark & Karen expose new dancers to
various forms including the American Tango, Merengue, American Rumba,
Salsa, American Swing, American Rumba.
The DVD flows and breaks down the steps, timing (the count) both with
music and without. Both Mark and Karen demonstrate the movements and
let views see the steps from two angles. Views will be able to
appreciate the explanations and the direction for both the leader and
the follower.
Mark James and Karen Lupo are well known thru out the country. They are
teachers, performers, competitors and judge at competitions thru out
the USA. In addition, they host their own dance socials in Long Island,
New York. Mark is currently a member and a panelist of the Hustle Hall
Of Fame. He was the four time undefeated champion at the annual
Zachary' Dance Contest held in Long Island, NY.
As experienced instructors, both Mark and Karen provide a beginners
approach to multiple dances. It is a great introduction to those
curious to expand their knowledge to dances outside their own field. If
your looking for a big bang for your buck, this is the one for you.
They have put so much on one DVD including clips and demonstrations all
at a reasonable price. If you like a fancy decorated box with pretty
window dressing, this is not for you. This is the real thing, no
filler.
To order: Send a check for $32 (which includes shipping &
handling) to Mark James, 59 Sequoia Dr. Coram, NY 11727, then
.....get ready to dance.
Our Generation:
History Channel's Documentary on the Disco Era
History Channel will be broadcasting a documentary on the Disco era on
Friday, January 19th at 12 PM & 6PM. The current NYC
Hustle scene is being featured along with interviews of artists, DJs
(including Nelson ˜Paradise Roman) and dancers. This show
usually has repeats as well. Here is the webpage
for the current schedule:
http://www.history.com/minisite.do?content_type=Minisite_Episodes&content_type_id=51957&display_order=5&mini_id=51735 Here
is the description from the History Channel site: Our
Generation: Disco Airs initially on Friday, January 19 12:00 PM
& 6:00 PM After the trauma of Vietnam, the
disillusionment of Watergate, and the shock of the oil crisis, the
boomer generation was in a bit of a funk. But spilling from
the underground scene of New York City, a new beat called Disco burst
onto the scene. An irreverent response to the gloom of the
early 70's, Disco provided the tempo for a universal soundtrack of the
"Me" generation. Steve Gillon hosts.
Letters to the editor
Hello Everyone!
Wow, what can I say...what a great time and surprise. Joan and I were
overwhelmed with your generosity and kindness. The Hustle group at
Michael's is the best. We appreciate all of you for coming to surprise
us on this special evening. We are so glad you met our family and they
all enjoyed meeting you too.
Joan and I read each and every one of your meaningful, handwritten
cards. It's so nice to have great friends like you.
A special thanks to DJ Mark for all of the wonderful music choices that
evening. We would also like to thank our server, Susan who worked with
our son and daughter to create such a beautiful evening. We appreciate
Scott and Fred for taking the pictures so we would have some special
memories to share. A special thanks to Ron Bess for his help in
organizing and sending the invitation to all of you.
Finally, thank you to those special people who gave us such generous
gifts.
Now I would like to state a quote by Jackie Gleason,
"Your the greatest."
Love and keep on dancing,
Joan and Mike

Hi Ron,
Greetings from sunny Utah, a big change from growing up in NYC, got
married and moved here to start a family. I look forward to Tuesday
mornings - my hot coffee, danish and my copy of dancetalk. It is the
best. I was active competing with my teachers in the early to mid
1980's. I do have a question for you or your informative readers. There
was a remarkable dancer that could lead but was incredible at
following, I have thought many a times how he is doing? His name was
Freddy. I don't know his last name, but he was trained in ballet and
was short in stature. I think he was born in Argentina. He was not only
a stupendous dancer but a wonderful person to everyone. Do you know his
wearabouts?
With great appreciation,
Annette :)

Hi Ron,
I wanted to update you on the growing hustle community in San
Diego. We have started a club, Hustle San
Diego. Archie Dawson is our president. We are entering our
third year this year! Archie was interviewed on t.v. in
addition to our club demo. I believe we may now be
one of the most organized hustle dance communities in the
country. I am thrilled. We have been
working on this for years. This year our community
actually has weekly hustle venues........used to be we had one venue on
monthly basis. http://www.hustlesd.org.
It has most comprehensive info about hustle dancing in southern
California. I am excited to get the word out..

Wendy K.

Hi Ron, I wanted to thank you for posting the Benefit Dance for Kim
Vanaman on your site. The event was well attended & probably
had as good a collection of Hustle Dancers as any event I
have seen in Ct. or New England in the last 25 years. We have received
donations from all over the country & I think you are
responsible for most. I got an e-mail from California 20 minutes after
your site was posted @ 12:45 am. We had 3 pro's doing dollar-a-dance.
Reisa Alexander, Jennifer Lyons, & Erik Novoa. We had 4
D.J.taking 30 minute turns. Reisa Alexander, Ron McCarthy , Ken Mercik,
& yours truly. There were dancers from as far away as Maine -
Southern New Jersey. The dance community should be commended for their
generosity & support. Thanks Again, Bob Frione
>>>>>>>>>
Hi Ron, Last Saturday night, the dance community in the Northeast
really came together for one of our own. We had over 100 dancers who
came from every state from New Jersey to Maine. There were also quite a
few people who sent in donations because they could not attend in
person. At last count ... Between the Door, the Dollar Dance and
additional donations ... we raised $2,985.00. Last time we spoke, Bob
was still waiting for a check he new was coming, so our total will most
likely surpass $3,000 buy the time every donation is accounted for. I
would like to thank several people who selflessly gave their time to
make this a success ... of course Bob Frione ... the brainchild for
this event and one of the DJ's ... Ron McArthy - DJ, Reisa Alexander
for donating her time to teach and DJ, Jennifer Lyons & Eric
Novoa for assisting with the MARATHON "Dollar Dance." Eric also took a
lot of pictures which can be seen on his website at
http://www.swingshoes.net
The Polish Home who donated the use of
their hall and most importantly, all you dancers that attended and sent
in donations. Now an apology and update ... to the 117 people who sent
me e-mails asking how Kim is doing. I didn't get a chance to answer
them yet ... so I will handle that now. Truth is, I am not the best
person to ask for an update on her condition. Even though I have known
her for many years and took some of my first Hustle workshops with her
... I am over 100 miles away, and not within her "Inner Circle." I
finally got up the nerve to call her Friday night to see how she is
doing, and we had a nice chat. I don't think she would mind me saying
this much. She has a good positive attitude, and is making plans for
the future. Of course there are the well known physical reactions to
Chemo and Radiation Therapy, but that is to be expected. Once her
treatment are over ... She's hoping to attend Mad Jam in March and the
Miami Hustle event in May. Also, in speaking with some of those who do
see her every week, it appears the cancer was caught early enough that
the treatments "Have a high probability of cure." That was the quote
that stuck in my mind. Sounds promising to me. So, the best
thing most of us can do is keep her in our thoughts and prayers, and
wish her a speedy recovery. Let's hope they the medical community comes
up with a cure for this disease sooner than later.
Stay tuned for the "Remission Party" . :-)
Thanks again
DJ Ken Mercik

Dear Wonderful, Fabulous Dance Community Friends:
The GOOD news is: I have an awesome list of people to thank for all
kinds of kindness thus far during my illness....the bad news is that I
have just started to have enough energy to begin to respond directly
and thank you! What a lovely problem to have! Since
I started down this road last June, I have had kind and generous
people: send cards, emails, phone calls, visits, organize
deliveries and/or provide dinners, distracting parties, give comfy
socks! and organize and attend and dance! at fund raisers to help me
win this battle. Everyone seems to have a "sister, mother,
cousin, friend...." that has battled cancer. I have heard encouraging
stories of survival and am grateful to you all. It
DOES all help! Whenever my doctors have complimented me on my
attitude and how well I'm doing, I give all the credit to you and tell
them that it's impossible to be any other way because I have be blessed
with such a terrific group of "cheerleaders" who have been supporting
me in so many
ways, all along the way. I am also grateful to "the
grapevine" who have kept people informed about my illness and progress
and saved me a lot of energy so that I could focus on sending that
energy into my health. In that regard: I have
finished with surgery and chemotherapy and am currently receiving
radiation; after that, it'll get easier and I can start to recover my
body and turn my eyes back to dance and seeing you all on the dance
floor. I have already progressed from someone who was
constantly tired to someone who only tires easily. So I'm on
my way! My first adventure back will be at MadJam in March;
then I will be in Miami in May. I am really looking forward
to seeing you all (and dancing!) as soon as I can. Please
accept my sincere thanks, not only for your multitude of kindness, but
for your patience with my ability to respond personally. It
is wonderful to know that there is so much goodness and kindness in our
world as well as how absolutely medicinal and powerful it is to be on
the receiving end of that kindness at this time. I know it is not
"repayable" but I do know that I can (and will) pass it on.
Sincerely and gratefully, Kim Vanaman

2006 - A Look Back
It was a great year for dance and the music that makes us move. Here is
a brief look back at this past year.
We say good bye to our dance friends:
Philadelphia dancer Micelle Mikalena Nau leaves us at the young age of
37. beauty on the dance floor her life was taken from us by young
degenerates. This year we have lost many vibrant dancers from our
community. Lets always remember and dance for Patty Kozel and Lydia
Pezzetti
Earlier this year on the second season of Dancing With The Stars - Drew
Lachey took the first place prize. Ballroom dancing has reenergized.
This past fall, Emit Smith won the trophy in the shows third season.
Some of the best dance albums this past year were by: Gwen Stefani, The
Pussy Cat Dolls, Madonna, Nelly Furtado, Lucas Prada and Justin
Timberlake.
The 4th annual Mad Jam was a major success. Dave Moldover hosted over
1000 dancers to an awesome weekend in Virginia. Jordan Frisbee and
Tatiana Mollmann took top honors.
The IHSC held its 6th annual event in Florida and crowned Professional
dance champions Kelvin Roche and Loriann Greenhouse. Susan Marolda was

to escape from the cold winter weather up north. Besides the
traditional indoor and outdoor dance parties, contests, and workshops,
this year's cruise features: 1) a new Hustle Dance Camp with a
comprehensive certificate of completion program. 2) Gorgeous
ballroom and disco with huge dance floors. 3) Four complimentary themed
cocktail parties: one Mexican Fiesta, one Tropical Drinks, one
Italian-style Festa, and one Captain's Formal Reception. 4) Jack 'n
Jill fun dance contests using their new "You Be The Judge" (by audience
approval) fair competition scoring system.

Rico tentatively planned for Tuesday, March 20th; plus, 6) this year's

Letters to the Editor
Dear Ron,
The LA Hustle dancers would like to send our warmest New Year wishes to
all our dance friends, near and far...and Ron, we truly thank you for
sharing another year of hustle news and events.
FYI...earlier this month we saw Gary Ulaner out on the dance floor at
Josie Neglia's Hustle party hosted by Disco Dave.
Gary WOWED us with both hustle and swing dance steps and did
not disappoint. Welcome back Gary and we hope to see all our
dance friends at Josie's studio on JAN 20TH.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

Hi Ron,
Luis Rosa saved the day.... or in this case, last Tuesday night at
IBBG. At 9:15 last Tuesday night at IBBG, there was silence.... for the
first time in the 5 1/2 years that Chris has been our DJ, he did not
show up. I certainly hope he's OK. Doreen was frantic. I ran out to my
car to get some new hustle music that I had just received in the mail
the day before from Bobby Morales. Barry came up to the DJ booth
& tweaked the sound. Chuck brought in a CD that he thought we
all would enjoy. Frank from NJ went up to the DJ booth to put on some
other CDs that a few other people offered. And then...... to everyone's
delight, Luis & Mary showed up & Luis took over the job
for the rest of the night. Without any notice & no headphones
he played a GREAT night of Dance music. It once again reminds me that
our crowd always pulls together when someone is in need. There was a
huge crowd. Everyone had a great time.... so Thank You Luis for saving
our night!!!!!
Robin

Hi Ron, wishing you and your family a happy New years. Just wanted to
tell you I purchased the new Salsa DVD by super star Lisa Nunziella at
our local Target store. Thats right, Target, she is national. I am so
proud of her and her achievements thru dance. She was one of the best
hustle dancers by far. It is so nice to see a talented beautiful dancer
achieve so many great things in her family and life. Thanks Ron for
making me aware.
Love,
Janice
