Spot Light
'Lorelei Lee'
She is among a rare breed of great dancers that had the opportunity to dance with the master. Lorelei just returned from Florida where she performed and partnered with the incomparable Francois Szony. Her exciting dance history has brought her to this point in time....adagio is in her blood.
Back in the 30's, there were many great dance teams. One of the most exciting couples were the popular Henriques & Adrienne. Bill Henriques, was a famed adagio dancer that traveled the country performing. His dancing evolved as he took on new challenges producing and choreographing dance. While on the road, Bill and his wife Irma (who was a dancer in the show) had their first child, Lorelei. After the birth of their second child, Rex, the dance team decided it was time to settle down. After years of performing and touring, in 1958 The Henriques Academy of the Dance Arts opened its doors in Bucks County Pennsylvania. The dance center was received well and had great success. It also enrolled 2 new talented students, Lorelei and Rex. By the age of 14, Lorelei was already performing with a ballet company and by 17 was touring in a professional show. Rex went to college and majored in dance, earning his degree and focusing on show business. He had always loved adagio and was mesmerized by the great Francois Szony. It was only natural for these two kids to co mingle their talents, just as their parents had, as an adagio team. Their father passed away at a young age. Their mother would continue to run the dance studio in Bensalem Pa. by herself. Lorelei and Rex would tour the United States, South America, the Caribbean Islands and Acapulco performing. The studio would continue to grow over the years but suffered a terrible fire. Their mother decided it was time to sell the business that she had run for two decades. Like their parents, Rex and Lorelei, decided to ground their touring days and take over the studio in 1984. Fast forwarding twenty-one years to 2005, the studio continues to thrive. Renamed, The Bucks County Dance Center, teachers from other area dance studios come to BCDC to hone their skills. BCDC teaches dance to students from age 2 to Senior Citizens. Six years ago Lorelei started a tap class for senior citizens Starting with only five seniors, the class has now grown to over thirty! " The Easy Steppers have appeared on Channel 3, Fox News, State Senator Tommy Tomlinson's Senior Expo as well as many other appearances.
"I met Francois last year in "Florida Follies." I was hired to partner with Bill Steele who I had danced with in a theater in Philadelphia twelve years ago" explains Lorelei. "We did adagios, jitterbugs, Fred and Ginger number, basically all era dancing." In addition, Lorilee also performed with her daughter Brandy. They were a featured act in "The girl in the Mirror" from "Chorus Line" along with production numbers. When Lorilee arrived in Florida to partner with Bill, an accident occurred. Dance Legend, Francois Szony's partner was injured during a rehearsal. With the curtain rising in just a few hours...."the show most go on," Francois asked Lorilee to be his partner that evening. " After about a 45 minute rehearsal, I went on. I was so nervous I thought I would get sick before I entered the stage with the "great Francois Szony" shares Lorelei. The performance was an overwhelming success and the start of a new partnership. Szony is to dance as Michael Jordan is to basketball, his partnership with Lorelei was not by chance.
Francois and Lorelei finished with "the Great American Follies" on February 6, 2005. They performed to "Rhapsody in Blue," "Change Partners" and "the Continental." Our guest artist was Mickey Rooney and his wife Jan. Our star throughout the run was Robert Morse."
Together, Lorelei and Rex continue to direct BCDC located at 2292 Street Rd. in Bensalem, PA. In addition, Rex is an adagio dancer and professor of dance at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Over her career, Lorelei has performed in: "Alive and Well", "Chicago", "My One and Only", "Carousel", "Showboat", "Music Man", "Funny Thing Happened On The Way to the Forum", King and I", "Guys and Dolls", and "Pippin"
As a professional theater choreographer, her credits include "Annie Get Your Gun", "Mame", "Gypsy", "Man of La Mancha", and "Most Happy Fella, "She Loves Me", "Gypsy", "Jekyll & Hyde", "Wonderful Life", and "King and I".
With the great responses from the Florida Follies, Lorelei and Francois were asked to come to Montreal to audition for "Cirque" in Las Vegas.
We look forward to more exciting performances from this wonderful dancer.

Letters To The Editor
Hey Ron,
Anyone with the winter blues may find this idea of interest. I just enjoyed one terrific day in NYC! I had the opportunity to stop and see the Disco exhibit at the Lincoln Center Library. What a well conceived display incorporating music, garb, photos, signs, memorabilia, videos and DJ equipment. If you get the chance, go see it. And don't miss the 25 minute introductory film.
As an added treat, I was able to experience 'THE GATES' in Central Park. This is truly a unique bit of art history in the making, to which I encourage everyone to try and participate. The day was mild, the park was teaming with tourists... I heard more foreign languages today than at Disney's Epcot. 'THE GATES' is just a few short blocks from the Lincoln Center. 'THE GATES' is forever gone after February ends.
Paige
PS. Parking at the Lincoln Center Garage was reasonable for 6+ hours
PSS Rosa Marguerita is an upscale Mexican restaurant across from the Lincoln Center. (Pomagranite Margueritas their specialty) (Check out the 'Cliff divers' on the wall!)
Hey Ron,
Kathy and I are heading to MadJam next week. We have been learning west coast swing and look forward to taking some workshops. I hope other hustle dancers take the time to learn swing. The swing dancers are very cool and in my humble opinion a friendly group of dancers that invite others in. We have been around the hustle scene in NY - VA - NJ for a number of years and the hustle crowd could learn a lot from the swing dancers!!!
Look forward to seeing you and your family.
Mike

The Return of Disco
Get ready for Disco 2005 disco is back and its slicker, edgier and funkier than ever according to UK writer Eloise Fysh. The rebirth of disco was made official at the Brit Awards as the flamboyant five-piece 'Scissor Sisters' earned Best Group, Best Album and Best Newcomer in the international categories for their unique brand of retro sounds. There are big signs of a revival, says Alex Needham, featured editor at NME magazine. A lot of people think that discos cheesy, and the cheesier elements of it have been done to death, but at the same time theres a lot of soulful music that hasn't been heard before and a lot of that's getting revived as well.
And it seems that the Scissor Sisters singers Jake Shears and Ana Matronic, bassist Baby Daddy, guitarist Del Marquis and drummer Paddy Boom aren't alone in their fresh take on the disco genre. Needham suggests that by diversifying the sound of disco and including the rock, Motown and 90s dance elements popularized by the Scissor Sisters, the genre has not only regained its popularity, but also adopted a newfound credibility.
They have created a sound of their own, successfully reviving the camp, cool, joyful sound of the 70s dancefloor for the 21st century. Its well-crafted modern-day disco with a cool rock attitude which works on many levels. So will Disco get new legs?
Needham believes well be hearing a lot more Scissor Sisters-inspired sounds.
People are bound to be inspired by them and to aim to do similar things. Franz Ferdinand have inspired a lot of other guitar bands and there are bound to be a lot of other bands who are struggling, making dance music, wholl be inspired by the Scissor Sisters. The Scissor Sisters themselves, however, have their sights set firmly on conquering their home turf, the notoriously difficult US market.
Gambaccini explains that breaking the UK before hitting it big in the US is part of a long tradition, with the huge US market seemingly slower to catch on to the new wave. Yes, the US does tend to be slow at catching on. Hopefully, the young generations is ready to take a break from rap and experience the new dance sound.

Hi Ron,
The cancer is not gone. It is stable, but I feel I am getting better. I still struggle with my speech and my short term memory. The last MRI was done last week and the results indicate no growth even though there are still lesions present. They will probably begin a new protocol of chemo and meds.
Please let everyone know, I miss them and wish I was there dancing with all of you.
Love,

GO Eagles
Spotlight
"Luis Rivera"
In the mid 70's, a magical dance company was formed, The Disco Dance Dimensions, the hustle review of the time. Among this legendary troop was an unsung hero......Luis Rivera.
More of the quite type, Luis was tall, dark and handsome and WOW could he dance. Nobody actually taught him how to dance...he just watched and decided one day to just do it. Growing up in the Bronx, Luis was introduced to the hustle at an early age when tagging along with his older brother, a well respected DJ. His first experience of the hustle was in 1973, at St. Mary's recreation center, located in the Bronx. "It was like a scene out of West Side Story, wall to wall dancing and a prehustle dance called the Rock. "There was Eddie Vega dancing with three girls at the same time" remembers Luis, Eddy couldn't have been more then 9 years old at the time. Luis was instantaneously enamored by the hustle and was hooked. From there, his dancing moved into the hot discotheques and, ... which ever clubs an underage guy could sneak in to: Ipanema, 310, The Red and White and Tropicalia. A short time later, Luis would be performing with George Vascones and the legendary 'Latin Symbolics'. After joining the troop, George partnered Luis with Edye. She had great finesse and could work a crowd.
A wonderful dancer that lived around the corner from Luis invited him to join the Disco Dance Dimensions. A superstar in his own right, Hector Berrios, was a member of the DDD. "He came banging on my door saying that Billy Fajardo was looking for another dance team and I would be perfect for the spot." Along with his second partner, Francine Gonzales, in 1977 they joined this popular dance review.
The company was made up of three teams: Billy & Sandra, Perico & Debbie and Hector & Jackie. Luis had an untapped bundle of energy that he would display with the Dimensions. This young maverick would now take a journey with the Dimensions that would span five years. Along the way, he would compete in contests and win first place at "The Starship."
His third partner was Alma Pagon. Known for her tremendous grace, Alma was a trained ballerina. Together, they competed and won the Roseland Championships.
One of Luis's most memorable performances was at the Harvest Moon Ball. "Ralph Lew wanted us to do something different." The troop selected a number from the motion picture 'Grease.' "It was awesome," recalls Luis, "the audience went wild."
In addition, the group did a performance at a Salsa concert held in Madison Square Garden. Dancing to A 2001 Space Odyssey with Tito Puente leading his band...the Garden rocked that night. Luis remembers a great synergy among the members of the troop. " As we traveled the world, we fought, laughed and cried together."
With the 80's, the dance landscape changed. The hustle was falling out of favor and there were fewer dance jobs. Luis took a self inventory and found the time was right to enter college. His dancing was put on hold.
Today, he is a computer engineer, spearheading a major Internet project for a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical firm. "I've been involved in many facets of the computer industry ever since I left dancing," shares Luis. Married with three beautiful kids, Luis stays in shape by working out at the gym, but, still stays connected with the hustle.
As a teenager growing up in the 70s, he was faced with many difficult choices. Youth gangs, drugs and peer pressure were prevalent during that era. His love for dancing prevented him from making any wrong decisions. The combination of practicing, traveling and performing, captivated his time. "I really never had a chance to think about anything else," reflects Luis. He is grateful to all those that provided him with friendship and the opportunities to dance. The late George Vascones, Hector Berrios and Billy Fajardo. His last contest was with Stracy Diaz. They won the Sabado Gigante dance contest, which is broadcast on cable television, UniVision.
The Dance Dimensions were an incredibly group of dancers literally becoming 'Hustle Central'..... The troop gave rise to some of the biggest names from the disco/hustle era: Billy Fajardo, Sandra Rivera, Franc "Perico" Reyes, Debbie 'Rosado' Ferro, Hector Berrios, Laudes Jones and Eddy Vega.....with a pool of so many talents, he could have been lost in the shuffle....but he wasn't. "He always looked up to the elder statesmen of the group, and wanted to learn all that they would be willing to teach him...working hard to improve as an artist," praises long time friend Debbie Ferro. "It was great having Luis as a fellow performer, travel companion, and friend."
As a quiet giant he made a great impact on this dance. Whether he was performing with Celia Cruz, Mark Anthony or Sister Sledge.... he was at the forefront of the hustle. Visit Luis's website at www.ddd.larglobal.com or www.larglobal.com/ddd/ddd.html

Hey Ron, ... A note to Dominic the DJ that provided your readers with his top-20 favorite songs from the Disco era (the artist that did "Manhattan Love Song"), it was King Errisson in 1977 (a very good song, one of my favorites too.)
Also, I would like to join Gloria in her birthday salute to George Velazquez George along with his friend Craig Yee would dance regularly to my music (I was the DJ at Penrods, now known as Zachary's for your younger readers). When George and Craig, along with their dancing partners got on the dance floor, most everyone else cleared the area just to watch in awe. Boy, they were good! Happy Birthday George.
Regards, Jackie McCloy

Hi Ron,
Although I don't get out to dance anymore I enjoy keeping up on the hustle and the information you share with everyone. Each week I print out your newsletter and now have been collecting them for three years. When I read your article on George Velazquez it reminded me of a man - a great dancer from the New Jersey area, by the name of David Seneca. He too was thrilling to watch.
Hopefully your write a story on him one day.
Keep up the great work,
Betty Thompson
