"Evolution" - a gradual process in which something changes into a different
and usually more complex or better form.
Hustle has evolved through the years.  Just like the Ballroom/Latin dances and the Country Western dances have evolved into more complex and more technical forms, so has Hustle over the years.  The Hustle of the "Disco Days" (back in the 70's) is no longer "The Hustle of Today."
Evolution is inevitable...go with the flow...take a few lessons and update your technique.

Ron,
WOW!  I've celebrated my birthday at other clubs before, but nothing comes close to my birthday celebration at Michaels.  Everyone made me feel very special with their cards & gifts.  My birthday dance was absolutely exhilarating! Thanks to all you guys (and Alice) for dancing with me - what a thrill!  Thanks also to all of you who contributed to my delicious cake.  A special thanks to Scott for planning the night for me. And finally, thanks to DJ Mark because, without him, we wouldn't have our Tuesday nights at Michaels.

Hi Ron
Robert Moog, inventor of the Moog Synthesizer, died on the weekend.
I know he wasn't a musician, but he was a pretty influential "toolmaker" as he called himself.

Hi Ron,
I was looking at your newsletter and was really impressed. I am 70 years old from the original "MAMBONICKS" of the mid 50s to the mid 60's in NYC mainly Brooklyn and the Bronx.. I don't know if you are familiar with that term.  I was also part of a Mambo team called the MARTIANS CHA CHA'S and did shows in the Catskill Mountains, and Beach Clubs  in New York. I was wondering if any of your readers  would remember, or were part of that Mambo scene? I have so many great memories it would be great to share them with other people remembering Tito Puente, Orlando Marin, Joe Cuba, Alfredidto, La Playa sextet, Machito, Willie Bobo, Ray Barreto, Mongo Santa Maria ,Patato Valdez Tito Rodriguez and so many more.

Hoping to hear back from you.
Thank you.
Ronnie

           Time Capsule

The year was 1976, the year our nation celebrated the bicentennial. Rocky Balboa punched his way to the top..... although he was the underdog, the Omen and Carrie scared movie goers and "Turn the Beat Around" had every body humming and moving to this dance anthem. Five years ago, this special singer slipped away. Vicki Sue Robinson was, for many, the voice of dance music. Her hit song captivated the hearts of all Americans. It energized the USA before Saturday Night Fever and the BeeGees sound track were released. Vicki Sue was on top of the world. She was far from being a one hit wonder. She went onto sing other popular dance hits including "Never Gonna Let you Go" and "Everlasting Love."
She was the type of singer that inspired many others including Latin superstar Gloria Estefan of the Miami Sound machine. Estefan went on to do her rendition of Turn the Beat Around. Some of Vicki Sue Robinson's best work didn't go main stream. Disc jockeys and die hard music lovers will recall the beautiful rendition from the motion picture "To Sir With Love." Vicki took this hit and put it to a disco beat capturing all the emotions of the original. She also performed the song "Night Time Fantasy"...a song that slipped under the radar and never received much air play.  Her voice was so captivating that she was courted by many national products. She could be heard on numerous television and radio jingles for famous brands such as Maybelline cosmetics, Downey fabric softener and CoverGirl cosmetics.
As a teenager, Robinson appeared in the Broadway show 'Hair,' and having been discovered by Robert Stigwood (RSO Records, The Bee Gees) she joined the cast of Andrew Lloyd Webers "Jesus Christ Superstar."  Born in 1955 in Philadelphia Pa, Vicki died in 2000 after a long battle with cancer. She was only 46 , a true unsung hero.

Dance Music Hall Of Fame - Inductees for 2005

The Dance Music Hall of Fame, an organization that recognizes the contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution and development of dance music, will hold its Second Annual Induction Ceremony, Monday, September 19th at 7pm at the Grand Ballroom of the Manhattan Center (West 34th Street between 7th & 8th Avenues) in New York City. The evening will include performances and appearences by Chic, Gloria Gaynor  and the induction of 15 notable artists, producers, remixers, DJs and individual records.
This years inductees include Artists ChicGloria Gaynor, and Sylvester. Producers Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff, Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards, Quincy Jones, remixer Franois K (entering as a DJ as well), and DJs Frankie Knuckles & John "Jellybean" Benitez will also be honored. The five records to be inducted are "Stayin' Alive" - The Bee Gees, "Got To Be Real" - Cheryl Lynn, "Good Times" - Chic, "I Will Survive" - Gloria Gaynor and "Disco Inferno" - The Trammps. "The Dance Music Hall of Fame was founded to honor the pioneers of this overlooked genre; to recognize the significant accomplishments made by the DJs, remixers, producers and artists," DMHOF board member Eddie O'Loughlin says.  "[Dance staples like] long versions, remixes and mixshow radio were all developed by our nominees." Each year the nominating committee and Board of Advisors select nominees in the categories of Performer, Record, Producer, Remixer and DJ. Ballots are then sent to an international voting committee of over 1,000 dance music experts. Artists and others that helped shape the dance music industry become eligible for induction 25 years after their first contribution or record release. Nominations are not based solely on the subject's revenue or popularity. Criteria also include the influence and significance of the nominee's contributions to the development and perpetuation of dance music
For more information regarding the Dance Music Hall of Fame and the inductee ceremony, please contact: the Dance Music Hall of Fame at publicity@dmhof.com.   For ticket information:  tickets@dmhof.com

Hi Ron, I enjoy reading your newsletter every week. I have to go to the public Library in Glouster County New Jersey since My PC is out of action. I do have a question for you. I don't get the chance to get out to dance that much. I do enjoy hearing great music and frequent Adelphia now and then in Deptford. I would like to know where to buy some CD format music from the grand days of disco? Along with my PC, my record player is on the outs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  WHDC highlights

The superstars of dance, from yesterday and today, were in attendance. Many greats came out to see their old friends and make new ones. This was the fifth anniversary of the World Hustle Dance Championships. Registration this year tripled as competitors ranged in age from 9 to 75 years old. Diane Nardone out did herself....making the 5th anniversary event the best to date.
The theme was Las Vegas, celebrating the birth of WHDC which originally kicked off in the West. The Ballroom sparkled and was a glow as guests were treated to blinking strobe light jewelry. Dance great, Paul Pellicoro was inducted into the Dance Hall Of Fame. Paul is the proprietor of Dancesport dance studio in NY. As one of the pioneers of hustle, Paul has supported the hustle and has hosted the longest running Monday night hustle party. The Christopher M. Nardone award was awarded to the family of Roxanne Lope. Her unmatched spirit and devotion, Roxanne, gave so much of herself to others during her life. She recently passed away.
A special recognition award was given to Frank Pellici for the many things he does for others in the dance community. Frank had the house in tears as he received his award...a well loved and good friend to his fellow dancers. Connie Macdougal, Chris LeFebvre and David Boris were all acknowledged for the unwavering support they provide to the WHDC and Diane.
The dinner show was hot from start to finish. It included performances by Mark James & Karen Lupo, the Latin Dance Connection, Lori Brizzi & Ron Rizario, Jason Colacino & Katie Boyle, Robert & Nicola Royston, Ron & Lauren Bess, Keith Gussoni & Celeste Pfefferle, Brian & Silvana Gallagher and Tybaldt & Hazel Ulrich.

The weekend had many highlights including an awesome Pro Am routine by George Garcia & Lori Ann Greenhouse, the Pro Swing division and the prestigious World Open. The amateur divisions have heated up as many new couples have joined the competitive ranks. Over 25 states were represented as well as Germany. The music was non stop by the DJs with the golden touch: Dave Muzzi, Bobby Gerard, Johnny O and Nelson "Paradise" Roman.
