Relay For Life
(Dance and show your support for cancer victims)

This Friday evening, April 28th, come and join your fellow dancers at the Funky Friday? Hustle party at Soho Dance Studio in NYC as they help support the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life? Celebration of Hope, which takes place Saturday, April 29th at Shea Stadium. The event is a festive gathering of supporters with music, fun, entertainment and activities that take place right on the field at Shea Stadium. This amazing fundraiser, in its 2nd year which helps support research and programs, culminates with an unforgettable candle lighting ceremony at Sundown. Rosann Levy, Co-founder of Soho Dance and a team leader, invites you to come down Friday night and enjoy the music of  legendary resident DJ Bobby Morales, while asking your support for this special event that honors the survivors of Cancer and remembers those who have been taken from us too soon by this dreaded disease. Born and raised in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, DJ Bobby Morales has been spinning music since 1975. Recognized as one of the finest and most knowledgeable classic Disc jockeys in the USA, Bobby is on hand to lend his support for those in need. No stranger to fund raising and helping those in need, Bobby puts his DJ talents to work. Back in the day, Bobby was schooled by DJ Danny Flores. He learned the intricate process of mixing records. As he began to excel as a DJ, Bobby also built his dance repertoire. Whether he is tearing up a hustle or Salsa dance, Bobby has a true feel and ear for the music and what drives the dancers. Come out and dance for The American Cancer Society and experience the rhythmic sounds of Bobby as he puts his 30 years of skills to work. If you are interested in registering for the Shea event with the Soho team for a tax-deductible donation of only $20, forms will be available that night. You can also sponsor a candle in a loved ones name that will be part of the candle lighting ceremony for only $10. For more info, feel free to contact Rosann at Soho Dance or the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or online at http://www.acsevents.org/relay/ny/sheastadium. We hope to see you all there to support a great night of dancing and unity.

Letter to the editor

Hi Ron,

I had the good fortune to be at the IHSC dinner show last Saturday to see Billy Fajardo present the John Luchese award of achievement to our friend, Sue Marolda.
It was particularly fitting that Mr. Luchese had been a mentor and an inspiration to Sue in the early days of her dance career -- a fact that I'm sure Billy and Katie realized made it more special. In accepting the award, Sue spoke with clarity and composure.  Naturally, I'm sure it was difficult for her not to let the strong emotions of the moment become overwhelming, but Sue handled the challenge wonderfully.  It takes a confident dancer to dance in front of a large audience, but it takes a strong person to speak eloquently before a big crowd. Sue was mentioned in a section of the IHSC program, which talked about the award and highlighted her stellar dance career.  It is always impressive to see a synopsis of Sue's dance titles and credits, but what was most gratifying to me is that this was not only an opportunity to honor a very accomplished dancer, but also a good person who is a woman of intelligence, integrity and class. Congratulations, Sue.
 Juan

Letters To The Editor

After several years of declining health, Anthony Brizzi, father of Lori Brizzi and Bobbi Petri (Barbara Brizzi) succumbed to complications from lymphoma on Monday, April 3rd, 2006.  His greatest challenge was, unrelated to his lymphoma, the onset on Macular Degeneration during his later years.  The Brizzi family takes comfort in your warm thoughts and wishes, and requests that in lieu of Mass cards, flowers, baskets of fruit, etc., that you consider a token donation to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation @ PO Box 515, Northampton, MA  01061-0515.  Thanks to all who have shared their love and support during their family's time of grief.

......................

I'd like to comment on Michael Couris' letter to you.  I am a dancer from "back in the day", and started coming out to hustle again over 2 years ago.  About a year and a half ago I started dancing WCS.  Michael is right on the money.  It was tough to come out knowing no one, but the love of dance is strong.   I'm an outgoing sales type A person, and pressing the flesh is in my nature, but for a more reserved person I would have to think the task could be agonizing, to get into the swing of things.
What strikes me the most is the way I was treated at Matty T's on Long Island when I started WCS.  I walked in the door knowing no one, and was immediately partnered up with an experienced dancer for the lesson.   Everyone danced with me, although I was a rank beginner, and everyone was friendly.   I kept saying I'm a beginner, and they helped me along.  People were gracious and friendly.  It's made Matty's my favorite all time place to dance, and humbled me about giving back to beginners.  I have grown over the last two years in my dancing because I was able to "dance up", both in WCS and hustle, and because I had the aptitude to catch on.   When I return the favor, I get more good partners to dance with, and more friends.   For a few dances with beginners, I have made my dance world a better, nicer, friendlier place to be, and people don't forget that kind of generosity.
Lisa

Letters to the editor

Hi Ron,
A big thank-you to all my friends that help make my parties special by bring tasty dishes, deserts or bottles of wine. I also want to thank Johnny V (all the way from Long Island) for spinning great music all night with no breaks!! Go Johnny go!
The big surprise for all of us, especially me, was the awesome DVD of all my parties in the past. Tastefully and artfully done Fred!!! Thank-you so much... I will cherish it forever! The next party will be sometime in June. I am planning  a Sunday afternoon bar-B-Q and dance especially for those who have had to work on a Sat. night and have not been able to attend a party. I will set a date in April.
Yours Truly,
 Wendy Lippincott

Hi Ron,
I have recently been to a few parties where I've noticed many women were not dancing.  For one, it seems the men are not showing up at these parties which our instructors are giving.  Not only should we attend the parties to support our instructors but to dance with beginners as well as the more experienced dancers.  The beginners are the future of dancing.  Everyone deserves a chance!  We can't let these newcomers just leave because no one wants to dance with someone who isn't very good.  Some of these people have the ability to be excellent dancers-given the chance!!!  Also, we should not let our egos ruin it for everyone.  We need to be more receptive to these people as human beings who deserve the respect of being human.  It is not easy to just walk up to strangers and start a conversation.  I had the opportunity to talk with someone who did the Hustle back in the day and is taking lessons now. He told me he went to Michael's on a Sunday and only about three people actually talked to him.  This makes the others appear clickish, unfriendly snobs etc.  He also said he won't even dance with this other woman even if she asked him just because she hangs with that crowd.  It is wrong and we cannot let this happen.  We need to make a better impression if we want people to keep the whole thing going.   Thank you,
Michael Couris

Hey Ron,
I wanted to share with you my visit to the Palladium discotheque in Florida. I am a Human Resources director for a large Insurance company based out of Greensboro, NC. We do quarterly training courses at our regional office in Fort Lauderdale. After virtually eight hours of non stop class room training I needed a break and read in your publication about the hustle format at the Paladium. Although I had an easy time finding the shopping center I couldn't find the club for nearly 5 minutes driving around the lot. I was tired and still shaking off some jet lag. Once I entered I was grabbed by the great dance classics and the warmth of the club. I quickly got my second wind.
I entered not knowing one single person inside but by the end of the night I had danced with at least 6 different ladies and had the best time all month. Thank you for listing this and to all the nice friendly dancers at the night club. I will now volunteer my services at work in efforts to make more trips to my new home away from home.
Sincerely,
Jim Kent
