Disco America - Highlights and results

It was an explosive weekend bringing some of the top talent from all over the USA to this year's Disco America Dance Championships. With a committed staff, Donna Boyle and Joyce Szili delivered another successful event that had the dance floor shaking all weekend long. The beautiful weather gave dancers the opportunity to dance and swim poolside at the new home of DADC, the Ramada Airport Hotel. The action started with a Thursday night welcome party and Friday afternoon featured ballroom competitions in all levels. The prestigious Artie Phillips Life Time Achievement Award was bestowed upon Louie Orlando. This year, the organization inducted Luis and Mary Rosa into the Hustle Hall Of Fame. The Saturday night dinner show brought many smiles to the capacity filled ballroom. Choreographed by Elizabeth Darchi and Joe Kerner, the dance review had many belly laughs and a special moment, for this reviewer, when a Father's Day Dance was performed by Daniel McGee & Ginny Carey and featured Daniel's teenage sister and younger cousin. This interpretive dance combined the beauty of lyrical, ballet and ballroom, bringing appreciative tears to many attendees. Bravo.

The energy never left the evening as the "Philly Freeze" took over the packed room, a competition held exclusively here every year. Stanley Smalanovich and Lana May took first place. The "Bookends" contest once again proved to be a weekend highlight that will once again go down in the record books marked, Incredible. For the ladies, Erica Smith and Ginny Carey took first place honors and for the men, Daniel McGee and Jameson Kilburn rang supreme. The Top Teacher awards in the hustle were given to Brian Gallagher and to Christy Kam. Hi Ron,
I really enjoy when you post in Dancetalk the songs from back in the day. It brings back great memories. I do enjoy some of the new dance music but for me nothing will ever replace those times dancing at the clubs to real disco songs. I wanted to list some of my favorite songs from the early 1980's in hopes that other dancers will list some of their favorite songs as well. Here ya go - "Lets All Chant", "What A Feeling" from Fame, "Ring My Bell" , "Hit and Run Lover",

I could only get to Disco America on Saturday night but had a great time. I wanted to say that the music was great and some of the dancers from New York were just incredible to watch. I never seen a book ends competition before but if they are all like this then every event should have them. I couldn't believe it when Eric and Luis danced together. The tricks they did together were worthy of Americas Got Talent. I mean every one around us was in shock. Mouths open in amazement. I never seen anything like that. Next year I plan to be there for the full weekend.

Hey Ron,
I wanted to let you and the promoters of Disco America know what a good time we had. This was the first time I attended since 2005 when the event was held in Cherry hill New Jersey. I could see many improvements at the event and a bigger turnout. My only concern that has been brought up before in Dancetalk is that there is a lack of younger people. The music was perfect for all ages so somehow the dance teachers have to come up with a better way to get teenagers and college age kids to come out and participate. I know that once they experience it they will be hooked............. The question is how do you get them?
