Get well wishes to dance pro Gregory Harrison. He
has been hospitalized with a fractured sternum as the result of a bad
car accident. We look forward to seeing him back on the dance floor

Hats off to dance champions Raul Santiago &
Sergia L. Anderson. They took -
5th place in the
World ESPN Salsa Championships held last week in Orlando, FL.
They will be celebrating Carmen Mendez's birthday
this coming Saturday, Jan 5th at Lori Brizzi's Millennium hustle party
at IL Campanello.

The Class of 2007
Last week, in DanceTalk, we announced the newest members in the Life
Time Achievement Division of the Hustle Hall Of Fame. This is the
highest honor on the site. Our panel elects new candidates on an annual
basis. These are the dancers that have forged ahead, the path for
generations to come. Call them pioneers, trend setters, leaders...we
call them the best. As the hustle dance community grows, it is
essential that we share the history and roots of our dance. Here is a
closer look at the Class of 2007.
Jeff Shelley - Started the first
chain of dance
studios (1972) dedicated to Hustle, "New York Hustle." He taught and
performed weekly on the televised 'Soap Factory' TV show. He taught
thousands of dancers via TV and at his 4 studios how to dance the
hustle. Jeff combined ballroom styling in his hustle for a classic
look. Along with Donna Shelley they joined the American Ballet Theater
Dance Company.
Diane Nardone - In the early 70's
she danced with
the Hustle Kings dance troop, taught at the famous Dales Dance studio's
in NY and would go on to open her own studio. Diane excels in teaching,
performing and competing. She has appeared in motion pictures and is
the sole organizer of the annual competition the "World Hustle Dance
Championships" held in NJ.
Franc. Reyes AKA Perico -
Early
member of the Disco Dance Dimensions, dance troop. He appeared on Don
Kirshner's Rock Concerts for 2 seasons and competed on the hit show
"Dance Fever". A multi faceted performer, Perico has written multiple
gold records (dance songs). Many of his motion pictures (Illegal
Tender, Empire) received critical acclamations for his writing,
directing and production work.
Maria Torres - early competitor,
won numerous
championships and co -organized the original Hustle USA. Maria is an
incredible club and competitive dancer. Some of her partners included
Eddie Vega, Kenny Gonzales, Artie Phillips, Angel Figueroa. She
performed in numerous movies as well as choreographed on the hit show
"So You Think You Can Dance" this past season.
Spotlight
"Kathy Young"
Disco was taking off and nobody wanted to be left behind. At a very
young age, her older sister slipped her into her first Discotheque,
"Foxes", in Jersey City, New Jersey. The music, the lights and
beautiful dancers overwhelmed her. She was hooked and now would focus
on becoming one of the premier dancers. The year was 1977, 'Saturday
Night Fever' was taking the country by storm and Kathy Young was hooked
on hustle. "Dancing has always been a dream for me. My family
is large, 4 girls, 4 boys, and not enough family money for dance
lessons," but this didn't discourage her. A huge inspiration came from
her mother. "My mother loved ballroom dancing and would take any
opportunity to escort me, when I was younger, to dance halls and
studios". In Jersey City, the Imperial Ballroom was a hot
spot that together they would frequent on a regular basis. My
mother inspired me to continue my education, and follow my
dreams. Kathy now searched out other dance clubs and
studios to learn the hustle. " Where there was the hustle, I
was there." recalls Kathy. Like most beginners, finding someone to
dance with you can be a challenge, but Kathy was persistent. She didn't
know the dance that well but that did not deter her. She would practice
by herself at home to perfect her steps and got aid from her sister.
"At first, no one would dance with me". Kathy was on a mission
to master the hustle. She was open minded and invited constructive
input. One night when dancing at a social she met Nellie &
Julio Diaz. "Nellie was magnetic. She was very friendly and
funny" explains Kathy. "She approached me and complimented my
dancing. Kathy was taken back. "ME, she said I had one
problem. I danced like a white girl and - Complete Article @ Ron's
