All you had to say was "Scott & Elena" and the dance
communiity knew precisely who you were referring
too, no last name needed. It is with great
sadness that we share the passing of an incredible
dancer, Elena Nurse. Elena was
an early dance pioneer, along with her partner Scott,
that competed in many of the biggest
dance contests as well as performing
on numerous television shows
like "Dance Fever" and "Soul Alive". With
great floor skills, adagio and star quality showmanship,
Elena she was an inspiration to many other
dancers. One of the top competitors in the 70's and 80's, we
send our heart felt condolences to her family, her daughters
and her extended dance family. Please keep her in
your prayers.
Arte Phillips Memorial Tribute Celebration of his
life will be held on January 18, 2009 at The New World
Stages in New York City. Everyone is welcome
to unite for Arte's spirit and love, of not only life but of
people. More details coming soon. Please hold the date and
pass this on. Let's spread the unity for Arte.
Congratulations to dance friend Jie Du.
She has just become engaged to be married. We wish
her only the best for the years to come.

Voted the Queen of Disco, Gloria Gaynor,
has released a Christmas album entitled "Christmas
Presence." The CD includes many traditional holiday songs
plus an original song, "Christmas Prayer", which is
her tribute to American military men and women. In January 2009, Gloria
will kick off her symphony tour with the Houston Symphony.

Holiday Spectacular - Summary
Snow flurries covered the town but that didn't deter dancers from
coming out to celebrate and enjoy the 16th annual Holiday
Spectacular, hosted by Donna Boyle and Ron Bess. The guests
were dressed to the nines, looking simply, marvelous. The
party returned to the most exciting ballroom in the
state. The dance floor at the Stardust is huge,
accommodating as many as 200 dancers on the massive floor at one
time. Special thanks to Joyce from the
Stardust, Herman's Deli, Danceclassics.com and our volunteers
(Diane Weinberg, Frank Mazarella and Anita Gicone) for making this such
a memorable evening. The party kicked off
with a dance lesson as DJ Mark spun the best hustle classics and mixed
ballroom, swing and Latin music.
Jonathan Laub, Diane Nardone, Wingo Hom, Stephanie Risser and Brian
Gallagher, the all star panel of judges, had their hands full
as they helped crown the new "King & Queen of
Hustle" in our dance contest.
Congratulations to all of the competitors and to
the new reigning King & Queen.

Letters to the Editor (our goal is to post readers letters twice a month,
unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)
Determined, energetic, generous, able to achieve against all odds, his
uniqueness is what made him so special...Arte Phillips was a true
Aquarian...much ahead of his time.
When it came to dancing, teaching or choreographing, he was a visionary
who loved to spend time thinking about how he could make things more
exciting and more entertaining, showering the world of dance with all
his thoughts and new ideas.
Arte's heart was always in the right place. He treasured his many
friends and acquaintances and wanted to give back as much as he could.
He taught me so much about Hustle, improved my dancing and teaching
skills and if it weren't for Arte and everything I learned from him I
would not be choreographing and directing my 8th Hustle Team.
I will miss Arte, as will we all...but be comforted in knowing he is
"up there" with Eddie and Butchie, in all his glory, dancing his ass
off!

Dear Editor,
People have been asking me for years now if I can get them a
lesson with my husband, Donnie Shields. I remember living in
Philadelphia, about twelve years ago, learning the Hustle for
the first time and hearing of this amazing dancer in New York called
Donnie. People were talking about his complicated moves and yet
executed with so much talent and finesse. So many trying to copy his
moves or learn from him. Years later, everytime he would be asked to
teach a lesson, he'll always say no, either he was too busy,
he didn't want to compete with other teachers. Anyways,
fastforwarding to about two weeks ago, he taught a Hustle
lesson to one of my couples and really enjoyed it. So, he decided to
give teaching another try. Since we are not so much at the moment on
the dancing scene, it is hard to reach out to some of the
people who wanted to learn from him, so I figured your newsletter might
help. Donnie is now teaching in our own studio, in Long
Island, levels Intermediate and Advanced only.
If anybody would like to learn from his unique style, patterns

Dear Ron,
Thank you so much to all of my friends who came to celebrate my
birthday at Stepping Out on November 26, 2008. I am so very
grateful to Simone, who allowed me the privilege to celebrate at her
hustlejam dance, to my wonderful friend Nelson "Paradise" Roman who not
only played the best music ever as he always does but for also creating
an outrageous vibe all through the studio; to the many dancers (Louie
Orlando, John Merisier, Robert Lawrence, Zulma Rodriguez, Colette
Antonelli, Dr. Steve, and my brother Alex Jack whose health has
improved tremendously, just to name a few) who danced with me during my
birthday dance; to Lori Brizzi, our person of the year once again who
took time out of her very busy schedule to join us and a very
special thanks to my close friends Marianne Gonzalez, Tariq Brown,
Keith Harrison and Janet DiGirolamo who made it all
happen... and ofcourse to you Ron, for putting it in your
dancetalk newsletter and for coming to celebrate with me as well.

I have to first confess, I didn't vote in the readers awards
but still wanted to congratulate Roberto Pagan.
I don't know if your readers know this but he goes back to the early
days like many other greats. He is one those few dancers that
has kept it going since the 70's. And we all know that there
aren't that many from back then still competing and doing shows. I
don't dance that much anymore and sometimes struggle just to tie my
shoes but for Roberto, to still keep going, dam that is
impressive....and he didn't pay me to write this. LOL

Dear Ron,
I know you've been flooded with tributes to Arte, but I just
wanted briefly to add my thoughts:
I did not know Arte well--I never had any private lessons with him,
but I did attend his workshops whenever possible, because his
teaching skills were exceptional. I can think of no one whose
good opinion I
wanted more. There is no question that he was a pivotal figure in the
local dance scene. He stood out on the dance floor
with his ability to combine an extremely high level of
technical skill with virtually unlimited
freedom to express personal style and musical interpretation.
His joy in dancing and performing for an audience was evident.
I regret that Arte did not have the opportunity to create
choreography
for one of the network dance reality shows, it order to present
the evolving nature of hustle to mainstream America.
I hope that one of the many dancers he influenced
will be able to do this.
He will be well remembered.

I Just heard about arti phillips passing my deepest condolences to the
sniederman family. i've know arti phillips for so many years
from the 70's. he was one of the best dancers in town. i was
so saddened to hear about his passing and a great loss to the
