Letters To The Editor
(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month, unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)

Hello every one, I am looking for a copy of the very first Dance fever show. It was taped in January 1979 and aired later that summer.. The host was deny Terio and the Village people preformed that night on the show. My brother Vito DiPiertro danced with Maryanne Lalka on the show that night. The Judges were as follows: Martin Mall, Dick VanPaten, and Mindy from Mork and Mindy… My Brother danced to Donna summers Last Dance.. However he never saw himself on the show because a tigers game in Detroit went into overtime and the show was cancelled here. He is turning 50 on March 27th and we would like to surprise him and show the footage at his surprise party!!!!! We are willing to pay $500.00 reward for this copy. PLEASE if anyone has a copy of this show please call me at 519 7354441 or email me at giorgis@sympatico.ca… My brother is not well and this would make him so happy
Thank you Rita

Dear Ron:
I have had the privilege of representing DC on the hustle television show Dance Fever; have won the World Professional Exhibition Championship and British Blackpool Exhibition Championship. I have known David Flynn for years. It is my understanding he is running for IHDA President. Mr. Flynn is a worthy candidate for this office. He is highly intelligent, hard working, organized and diligent. He has a spirit of self-less service which is precisely the kind of attribute that would be ideal for this job. He will be devoted to doing what is best for dance. The fact that he has an occupation outside the dance industry is a plus in that he does not carry the baggage of “conflicts of interest” for which the dance industry is famous. He is a man of high ideals and sound character. The dance community is fortunate to have such a stellar candidate to vote for.
David Savoy
………………………………………………………………
Hi there Ron,
I love reading your newsletter every week. Thank you for keeping us all informed. I wanted to share some thoughts about the election for a president for the IHDA. Although I am not currently a member I am considering joining. I think it is important that if you love the hustle that we all get behind a organization that can help drive the hustle and keep it alive. I am not sure who I would vote for but for me, it is about the future.
That means bringing the young people back to the dance. It also means bringing in the current dance music not limiting the hustle to the 7o’s sounds. Who ever can send out this message will get my vote and support.
Thank you for posting this,
Melanie Schaeffer

We cover the birth place of our constitution, Philadelphia, to the igloos of Alaska, the path of Paul Revere to North Church to the sunshine state of Florida. We stretched out to the West coast and the gold rush state, home of Hollywood. We uncover the oil rich talent in Texas and the recovery of Louisiana as they prepare for Mardi Gras. The Garden State of NJ has many dance treasures as does the rock and roll state Ohio, and we can’t forget the peach state of Georgia. Letters to the Editor

(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month, unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)

As listed in Dance Trivia, “the hustle was born in the early 70’s but to many folks surprise, it keeps rolling on today.” To me, being a social dancer, that is the problem. I think the best way to increase the visibility of hustle is get it back in clubs. Hustle, it not just for competions anymore. That is why I am supporting David Flynn for President. He wants to build a bigger tent and expand, not tear down, what exists and already works fine. He wants give increased opportunities for young dancer and not so young dancers who don’t know hustle still exists both socially and competitively. Maybe if people see it, they will want to learn and take a class and bring their friends and the more people, the more likely a place would consider a hustle night. David offers change we can believe in.

Hi Ron,
I have danced the hustle from 1979 to 1984, got married and had 2 kids then returned in 1999 and haven’t stopped since. I am not familiar with the IHDA???? I see that there are some candidates running for the presidency but I know nothing about this society. Could someone help educate us about them? Where do they office out of? Is this a new group? I feel like I know a ton of dancers yet I haven’t heard about the IHDA?
Please help fill in the blanks.
Thank you,
Joy Glass

I am writing in support of David Flynn for president. I have known David since the summer, and I am a member of his dance team and am hoping to either compete or perform with him in a showcase in the future. He has been teaching the team swing, salsa, and hustle and I can say from personal experience that he is an excellent teacher. I have the most experience with hustle and I really enjoy going out to the clubs and being able to dance hustle to club music and I am looking forward to learning more from David.
Thank you,
Jessie

Reference David Flynn for President of I D H A
. I have know David Flynn for over 25 years. I taught him how to dance the sling hustle back in the mid 80’s.. He is now organizing and teaching the upper 20 to lower 36 young adults groups with much success. He is a very intelligent, accomplished dancer and teacher, having won most of the competitions he has participated in and in addition, is very popular with the generation he is teaching. He now has a dance team and is successful with them. I support David for president because I believe in his ideas of sling hustle style of dancing as it can accommodate to all speeds of dancing and is easier to teach than the current new york style of hustle, which I particularly do not like. I have grown up with every hustle that has come down from new york and the present new york style is not very applicable to higher speeds of music. I also believe in David’s ability to articulate his vision of dancing for all, bringing in the younger generation, which is so important to keep the hustle movement alive. I also think David’s ideas regarding teaching are superior, and he is very adapt at teaching both young and old dancers. He can articulate and demonstrate the easy and more complicated dancing moves and is very good with those that are new to the art as well as those who are excellent dancers. I have known most of his partners, and several of them are still active in dancing and contribute to his dance team on a regular basis, which is remarkable in that they are remaining in contact with him eventhough they dont dance with him in a partnership way. This says something of David’s demeanor, intelligence and overall personality. His older dance partners and friends regularly contribute to his dance team which shows inclusion of all ages. I certainly enjoy his friendship and revele in his knowledge about dancing and his attempts to get others to incorporate some of his ideas into the dancing repertoire. Most of the dances that I go to regarding hustle, are attended mostly by people in their late 30’s and up. We need to get the younger generation involved and I think the best way is with inclusion of sling hustle as part of dancing repertoire. David is very involved with the younger generation, and they seem to thrive in his dance community. This is what hustle needs. And I think that inclusion of sling is important as I believe it is easier to teach than the new york style. David would make an outstanding leader and would appeal to all generations of hustle dancers.
Respectfully submitted
Steve Russell

(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month, unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)

Hello Dancers,
IHDA is very excited that there are many who are interested in being a part of the organization. Although it is fine if those would like to promote their candidancy as Vice President or for any other position, please keep in mind that IHDA only holds the election for Presidency. It is the newly appointed President who will then appoint a Vice President to office, not the members. The IHDA constitution states that the President can only replace two positions on the board. So, if the newly elected decides to replace the VP or any other position then we recommend that all interested parties send their platforms to the President.
Thank you and we look forward to a great future,
beth

Hey Ron,
I’ll be supporting David Flynn for IHDA president–better to try to initiate change than say flat out it won’t work. Let’s have the conversation–if someone thinks a proposed comp format won’t work, what’s the alternative? Status quo? That’s not working–it’s not bringing in new people, not changing “attitudes,” not trying to find creative solutions…

I have seen two speeds of competition @ West Coast Swing Events. They were advanced dancers ,,but in Hustle they probably would be advanced also. There is faster music today that I enjoy dancing to,even though I prefer the 76′-80′music.I often dance with Westies in their 20s and 30s to faster current hustle songs and they seem to like the dynamics of the dance.Very Cool .

Hey Ron,
I have been following the up coming election for the IHDA and had a few comments to make to those running for the office of presidency. I attended the open session at the World Hustle championships that was hosted by Ron. I felt it was the start of a good conversation talking about the future of the hustle. Some of the important points made were talking about the need for current music and getting younger dancers learning the hustle. My message is to those running for office to continue to work on these issues. With out some change we will never see the hustle grow. The candidate that has the insight for the future will get my vote.
Thank you,
Pat

VOTE FOR DAVID, VOTE FOR DAVID, VOTE FOR DAVID: I am 26 years old, a member of the IHDA and I have been dancing for about 16 months now. I would like to give an enthusiastic shout out to my Hustle teacher, David Flynn! If it wasn’t for him, I would have never been exposed and involved in the competitive dance world, which I absolutely love and hope to make an ongoing part of my life from here on out. David has worked with me on Swing, Salsa and Hustle, but my favorite of the three, is hands down, HUSTLE!! One of the reasons I support David, is because I hope to see him have success with bringing faster options for Hustle competitions. I competed for ProAm Beginner Hustle at Swing Fling 09 and thought it was lame and boring. I had never heard the song they used for my segment and it seemed so sssslllloooowww compared to how I normally enjoy the dance when we do it at night clubs to all the current hits. I have worked with David for over a year, and I know him to be extremely leader minded (more so then any other person I’ve ever met), with a high intelligence (can solve problems very swiftly), has superman-like physical strength (good for lifts and tricks), an exceedingly outgoing personality (great for recruiting more & more dancers), and is extraordinarily passionate for Hustle and completely dedicated to doing what ever it takes to keep this special style of dance thriving.
Please join me, in making David Flynn the next IHDA President.

Ron’s Dance Talk – 2/14/10

Happy birthday wishes to Theresa DelToro, Kathy Kritsky, DJ Chris, Kyle Redd, Drew Axelrod, Tony Thompson, Michelle Dallaris, John Travolta and Ivan Nunez.

Nine years ago we held a fund raiser for a dear dance friend that was slipping away. “Ginger’s Wish” brought the dance community together to aid Ginger Dimaio. She now dances with the angels.

Our condolences go out to Chris & Joanne Bates on the loss of Joanne’s mother. Please keep their family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they struggle with this tremendous loss.

The rumors are flying as the cast for the new season of Dancing With The Stars takes form. Baywatch bomb shell Pamela Anderson is under consideration as well as hip hop dancer Kevin Federline (Mr. Britney Spears). * Director spike Lee released the film “Summer of Sam’ and featured many great hustle dancers to help portray the night club scene for this time period piece. The cast included David Padilla, Bobby Morales, Nelson Roman, Debbie Ferro and Miguel Merriro,

* The hustle was born in the early 70’s but too many folks surprise, it keeps rolling on today. In 1982 at the annual USBC’s, held in Madison Square Garden, some of the biggest names in hustle went head to head.
Ist place that year went to Eddie Vega & Nelly Cotto, 2nd to Lisa Nunziella & Danny Llaurdo and 3rd to Artie Philips & Maria Torress. Sadly, all three of these male superstars are now deceased.

* The US Professional Latin American title was held for 7 years by Ronald Montez & Elizabeth Curtis. Ron and Elizabeth had a multi week run on the original “Star Search” show as well. Ron was also the co host of the PBS Ballroom Championships.

* He dazzled audiences around the world with his charismatic smile and incredible dance finesse, Rufus Dustin held multiple titles including, Professional American Style , Open Professional Theater Champions, Blackpool Invitational, Imperial and North American Latin Champion and Canadian Theatrical Champion.

* A well regarded disco band from the late 70’s included drummer and singer Eric Carr. The group was called “Lightning” and they had minimal success but this didn’t make Eric a star. A short time later he joined a new band changing his luck. He became a member of the rock band ‘Kiss’.

* Best known for her high energy critiques on “So You Think You Can Dance”, Mary Murphy has an extraordinary background in competitions and teaching Ballroom dance. She is only one of a few that has been recognized with the prestigious recognition of the ‘Heritage Classic Award’ for her outstanding contribution to Dancesport.

* Charlie O’Donnell is best known as the TV announcer on Wheel of Fortune. He began his career in 1958, working with Dick Clark on American Bandstand. This led to several stints as a disc jockey on Los Angeles radio (most notably on legendary Pasadena station KRLA), and later as news anchorman in LA. He was also the announcer for the entire run of Merv Griffins TV show “Dance Fever”.

Letters to the Editor
(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month, unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)

I, Angelina Capalbo, would like to announce my candidacy for the position of IHDA Vice President for the term of April 2010 – April 2012. Alittle history of myself, I taught Ballroom and Latin Dancing for about 8 years. I have been a CT State Delegate for several years now and currently manage the calendar for the organization. I live in Long Island, am married and have a 8 month old baby girl.
Hustle has always been my passion but many refer to me as a lost soul since I am quite junior to most of my favorite hustle dance partners. I enjoy dancing hustle to modern day music and have always been bitter over the fact that hustle, to many people, was a “once was” dance, associated with disco. I truly believe hustle is the dance of the future. I want the hustle to survive therefore we have to do something to attract new and young membership otherwise the support for the dance will die off.
I feel what has been wrong with IHDA is instead of promoting the hustle I feel we are promoting a platform for its officers to teach lessons. I would like to see a Board of people who are looking to promote the hustle rather than their lesson book. I feel that IHDA has done a nice job with protecting and nurturing the hustle however I do not feel that they have made any impact in promoting the hustle. As the Calendar Coordinator I am seeing too many events that are not strictly hustle, that is one thing I would definitely change.
I also would enforce stricter requirements on state delegates such as more job responsibilities and perhaps even scheduling regular meetings with the delegates. As a state delegate I never got a call from anyone associated with IHDA, not one. Also state delegates should receive a welcome package with their responsibilities, fliers to leave out at local hustle events in their state and a business card to appropriately represent them. I suggested this several years ago and never heard back.
I am not a ballroom teacher, I am a stay at home Mom and I would be honored to dedicate my time to IHDA and its future. Please vote for me for Vice President of IHDA.
Best,
Angelina

Hey Ron i wanted to say i like what David Flynn has written in dance talk,he has ideas i’ve had & talked about for years (the lack of young people in hustle and a more New Vamped up Version of Hustle) I vote for him and support what he does, also He (Has a large group of young already dancing new style hustle) so he’s a maverick in my opinion, no one has done this in all of the USA, people can blab all they want, shoot off there mouths etc, but what you have in the Hustle world is High school reuinons. One last point, it really does not matter if people fight from the old school- to protect their world, the New will take over, its part of life in every field and genre of life, look at the new styles of west coast swing (very cool and vamped up) Salsa from LA calif, really blew the doors off years ago. The huge egos of the big wigs of hustle is sooooooooo worn out, no one will care and no cares about what you did 20/30 years ago, especially in lew of the Bad manners they have shown to new dancers over the years. Im Giovanni Arditi (aka DJ Kenny and i approve of this message, and im of sound mind and will not retract what i wrote, unlike our phoney politicans, dancers and people who really mean what they say including some actors, .LOL

…………………………………
David Flynn’s idea for a two speed hustle competitions will not work. There is no way any promoter of a hustle event can put twice the number of competitions in the same time frame. If David was the president and tried to force that on them, that would be the end of the IHDA. None of the promoters would want anything to do with rules like that. Quite simply, David would force them to run non-sanctioned events.

Letters to the Editor

(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month, unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)

Congratulations to Daniel McGee for stepping up and offering his services as President of IHDA! Daniel not only has the credentials to do the job, he has the class and foresight needed to lead the IHDA to it’s full potential. I read Dance Talk every month and recurring theme in the last year or so is that of attracting new people to the hustle world. IHDA could not find a better ambassador to this cause! Daniel epitomizes the compassion, understanding and patience that those of us “new-bees” to hustle are longing for but, unfortunately, seems to be a rare trait in the echelon of the Hustle World. He is a true gentleman in every sense of the word, a fantastic business man and his knowledge, execution and ability to lead the IHDA to great places are exactly what the IHDA needs say this pivotal time. He would serve IHDA well and is deserving of a vote from everyone who truly cares about the future of hustle.
Joan Hancock
………………………………….

David and Danny – the differences:

After carefully reading Danny’s Platform, and having written my own, the differences between us seem striking. Danny is an IHDA insider who’s vision repeatedly addresses growing various facets of the IHDA. Namely, the website, the international arm, even membership cards. All of this would indeed create a better and more professional organization. The problem is that while Danny’s vision is about the future of the IHDA, MY vision is about the future of Hustle. Danny is a first rate dancer who runs a successful business (Top Hat) and has experience with the IHDA as a current officer. I am a relative IHDA outsider who runs a dance team, and an IHDA like group called FAST, but it is populated with 188 of hustles younger participants. Honestly, either of us would make a fine leader considering practical or organizational considerations.
However – our visions of the future differ completely. To me, the IHDA is the means to an end. According to Danny’s platform, it IS the end. Reading his vision it appears that what’s good for the IHDA is what’s good for hustle. Danny never addresses the missing young, the disenfranchised or the street dancers. He addresses growth as organizational growth, not Hustle’s growth. I am all about growing the hustle itself, and using the IHDA organization to do that – rather than just growing the IHDA and abandoning anyone who doesn’t share my vision. When we asked Billy at MadJam last year about the “missing youth” problem – he railed against the request suggesting that young hustle dancers were out there in other countries. The Hustle Lounge then ran an article at my request surveying the readers on that same matter, only to find that almost none of the 62 respondents agreed with Billy’s assertion about us not having a problem. Susan Fritz was the one vote in favor of Billy’s world view. And interestingly, like Danny, Susan is a relative newcomer to hustle who never participated in the dance world in 1980 where hustle dancers and their fans circled every night club with a lighted floor. Dave Moldover advised me on this matter also when I asked his advice about hustle’s future. Dave said “You all have too much organization and too little participation.” Well Dave Moldover’s quote has become MY campaign slogan. IMO, we don’t need membership cards. Salsa and Lindy are doing fine w/o them. What we need are MORE dancers. Voting for me will represent a near complete changing of the guard at the IHDA. I would draft Angelina as VP and change the VP’s role to managing the delegates. I would spend my time getting 2 speed comps into our all sanctioned events – where the fast speed was at the original disco speeds of 1980 (128 BPM average according to Billboard). Regrettably, most of our current hustle champions would be replaced by younger and more talented dancers once the speed was raised to levels requiring far greater skill. But we would create a new breed of dancer that COULD do what we did in 1980, and dance to the hits that still define the Disco era to this day. You all still can hear those songs to this day when radio stations do Disco nights, or at any wedding anywhere. Our events could then start having better music with the 108 BPM speed ceiling removed. As a DJ myself, I can tell you that DJ’s would LOVE removing this restriction. Even more so – we could now bring our new champions into real night clubs, just like the disco days of our past. Hustle HAS a future folks – and to me, that future is the end (goal), the IHDA is the means. Danny’s stated vision makes the IHDA the end, and hustle the means. Our central difference is our opposite views of the future. My vision is about our dance – NOT just our IHDA club. When top promoters like Dave Moldover and nearly every responder on the hustle lounge identify a problem the current IHDA organization’s leadership denies – it is time for a leadership change.
David Flynn
PS – I think a lot of Danny, Top Hat and everything he and Jameson have accomplished in PA. But the vision of the future is what separates us dramatically. At this point, members need to decide “How long can we keep going w/o trying to solve the missing youth problem.”

Hey Ron,
Happy New Years to you. I remember you writing about starting a missing person’s article for those that fell out of touch with dance buddies from years ago???? Is That still on your agenda?? If so, please add these names to the list. Thank you so much for what you do,
Joy
Would love to be reconnected with – Zane Tobas, David Padilla and Shawn Lorenzo

2 . Current IHDA Acts of Service and Contributions
I have served on the board of IHDA as treasurer since 2004. My responsibilities in this position have included: general accounting, monthly reports, tax filing, accounts receivable and accounts payable to name a few. I have also been directly involved with the implementation of the IHDA Meet and Greets, assisting with the writing of the IHDA competition guidelines, contributor to the IHDA bronze syllabus and author of the IHDA board roles and responsibilities published on the IHDA website.
3. Accomplishments of IHDA
Before we can look to the future, we must first take a look at the accomplishments of IHDA over the past two years. Since its inception, IHDA has continuously endeavored to address the needs of the hustle community as a whole, with the past two years being no exception. There are currently ten IHDA sanctioned dance events. The IHDA board has expanded to ten members with representation across the country. IHDA membership has grown to include members from Canada, England, Russia, France, Italy, Japan and India. Lastly, 2008 and 2009 were busy years for IHDA as we saw the implementation of the IHDA competition guidelines as well as the IHDA bronze syllabus. These implementations have resulted in a number of IHDA certified instructors.
4. Future of IHDA
It is with great pride and excitement that I describe in detail my plans for IHDA over the next two years. As you read forward, my goals are divided into five distinct groups. These five groups clearly lay out the plans for all aspects of IHDA and the hustle community. The five groups include: 1.) The social dancer, 2.) The competitive dancer, 3.) IHDA International, 4.) Board, committees and regional reps, 5.) IHDA general company goals.
The Social Dancer
Our commitment to grow and strengthen the community begins with education. It is through this commitment that I plan to develop the IHDA Community Outreach Program. Through this program, IHDA will send qualified and certified professionals to various communities throughout the country. At the expense of IHDA, workshops will be coordinated with local professionals and regional reps to aid in the growth and development of the dance communities. IHDA will make it possible for the local professionals to host workshops in their community.
In addition to the afore mentioned program, IHDA also plans to expand its reach to communities not yet aware of this wonderful dance we call hustle. The future longevity of hustle lies in our ability to reach out to new dancers. IHDA plans to develop communities in cities such as: Dallas, Sacramento, St. Louis, Denver, Raleigh and Detroit to name a few.
Lastly, in consort with these new programs, I propose to have an IHDA national dance night. With the help and cooperation of the regional reps, I would like to develop a program by which an IHDA sponsored dance party is happening on the same night in communities throughout the country. An IHDA national dance night will happen on pre-determined dates throughout the year. These dates will be made available on the IHDA website and in the IHDA monthly newsletter.
The Competitive Dancer
IHDA will continue the work it has done to structure the competitive arena. As mentioned above, 2009 saw the implementation of the pro-am guidelines. The implementation of these guidelines was well received by competitors. At last, dancers feel confident in the division in which they are dancing. As president, I plan to continue developing the competitive process.
Forthcoming plans include:
-Adding Level 6 (open division) to the pro-am division.
-Implementation of the pro-am guidelines to amateur just dance divisions.
-Implementation of age specific divisions.
These levels and divisions have been the single most requested item by IHDA members. Over the next two years, IHDA will work in tandem with IHDA event directors to develop a system that most successfully guides dancers on a path to accomplish their competitive goals. This process will be developed carefully and with much consideration. The accurate development of a complete, graduated system will ensure a fulfilling competitive atmosphere for all dancers.
The continued certification of IHDA instructors will begin to produce IHDA certified adjudicators. IHDA plans to create a standardized judging system to be upheld at all IHDA sanctioned events. The systemization of an accurate adjudicating process is crucial to the assuredness of all dancers. All judges sitting behind the clipboard at an IHDA event will adhere to the same guidelines and judging criteria.
The final plan for the competitive dancers is for IHDA to work closely with DJ’s hired for competitive sessions. We will work together to develop suggested musical styles and tempi for competitive heats.
IHDA International
As the first initial in IHDA states, the first word of our organization is, “International.” As listed in the “accomplishments of IHDA” section, we now have members from all over the world. Two of our strongest international contingencies are in Italy and Canada. We will soon see the creation of IHDA International. IHDA International will be an affiliate organization that will work hand in hand with IHDA America. IHDA International will be governed in the same manner as its US counterpart. IHDA International will have a president and a board, again in the same manner as IHDA America. The International president will have a seat on the US Board and vice-versa.
Finally, in the coming years, we will see two additional items on the international front. Number one, we are working on the inception of the first International sanctioned hustle event. Number two, we plan to have the IHDA manuals and DVD’s translated into necessary languages to accommodate our growing world community.
Board, Committees and Regional Reps
One of the first priorities of the new term is the creation of the IHDA Professional Consultant Department (IHDA-PCD). From the beginning of IHDA to the present, the board has worked diligently on all tasks affiliated with managing a successful organization. The continued growth of the company has led to the necessary creation of the PCD. This department will include but will not be limited to the following positions: Accounting, Legal and Information Technology.
The most significant changes in the IHDA board will be the creation of two new positions; IHDA International President and Adjudication Chairperson. The purposes of these two positions are presented in the goals mentioned above. Other changes include the streamlining of current board positions to be more task focused.
The next item in this category has to do with the regional reps. The regional reps are a very important part of the organization. The regional reps are the voice of the local communities. Many of the goals presented in this platform are the result of countless conversations with the regional reps as they communicated the needs of their communities. In the coming year, we plan to restructure the regional areas of the community. Our membership has grown since the creation of IHDA and we now need to include delegates for the expanded areas.
The regional rep restructuring will in turn lead to the creation of a new committee position. This position will be the Regional Rep Director. This person will be the voice to the board of the collective representation.
General Company Goals
This last section of my platform is likely to be the most influential. The four previous sections deal with specific pockets of our membership. The proposals in this section will effect and benefit all members: social dancers, competitors, professionals, board members, etc.
My first priority for the organization proper is the constructing of a more attractive, modern, user friendly, inviting website. The current website was useful in the early stages of our development. However, it is now time for a new look with enhanced functionality.
Our next item will be the reinstitution of IHDA membership cards. All members, no matter their level of involvement, will be a card carrying member of IHDA. This card will be useful at dance events, dance parties and workshops.
IHDA education is also a large plan for the next two years. Within the next two years, we will see the completion of the IHDA silver and gold syllabi. In addition, there will be companion DVD’s created for all levels. To aid all members in the acquisition of knowledge complied in the syllabi; we have plans to create an annual IHDA Congress. The IHDA Congress will be an event filled with informative workshops on reading the manual, understanding the material, instructor training and certification, performance expectations and judging criteria. The IHDA Congress will be beneficial for competitors and social dancers alike. Everyone will have the opportunity to improve their knowledge and abilities of the dance through the IHDA Congress.
Growth and progress are an exciting aspect of any organization. With that said, it is imperative for IHDA to enhance communication with its members. This coming year, we will see the publication of a semi-annual news.

IHDA Presidential Candidate

(DanceTalk has agreed to publish any candidates platform that is running for the position of President of the IHDA. This is an open invitation)

Per the guide lines of IHDA officer applicants I wish to announce my candidacy for the office of President of the IHDA starting April 2010. I have been a member in good standing for over one calendar year as required and have attached a Platform for voters to consider followed by a Bio as specified by the club secretary.

Presidential Platform:

To outline why I believe I should be elected president of the USA’s premiere Hustle organization I will address the mission statement directly, with how I would complete or change each facet of the organizations vision & mission.
1) Mission Statement
The International Hustle Dance Association (IHDA) is hereby established to support the Hustle partner dance and accepts the following as its charter:
a) To help promote, protect and nurture the Hustle as a social, competitive, and artistic dance form.
The Problem -
I believe the last several IHDA administrations have succeeded in promoting hustle to a very small subset of the total dance community that we could actually represent. Those best served are largely over 50 years of age today, and choose to compete and travel to major dance events. There is a far greater population of young people who used to flock to hustle, that now find better service in Salsa West Coast or Lindy. Previous leaderships paid lip service to getting the youth vote w/o results for election after election. Also under represented are all the many street dancers who feel our organization has no place for them. In short – We have too much organization and too little participation.
What I would change -
Making Hustle Fun Again means loosening our tie a little. Hustle used to own the nightclubs, so I would bring it back to them. How would I do that? Mandate that no hustle championship could be awarded at any sanctioned event w/o the winners prevailing in a 128 BPM dance round. So we’d have 2 speed dance contests just as WC swing does today, but the top speed would be 128 BPM. Thus – a new crop of champions would emerge that COULD do their dance at club speeds from 9 PM to close just as we did 30 years ago. For the first time, kids in those clubs would see OUR champions doing hustle to THEIR music.
What I would leave alone -
The current leaders have done an EXCELLENT job of servicing the folks who want a slower dance that has a purely competitive focus. We need them with us too, so I would not change what they do, only add what they don’t do now.
b) To develop uniform contest rules and divisions to be utilized at IHDA sanctioned events.
The Problem -
Purely focusing our mission on competition is fine if you want a very well healed older group of dancers who can afford $65/hour lessons. But that will never be more than 5% of the people who would love hustle just as a fun dance they never planned to compete in or buy lessons for. Are we going to focus on elevating Hustle, or just dance teachers salaries in the end?
What I would change -
I would move to merge the Silver and Syllabus dance rounds as they are redundant. This would make more room in dance competitions for 2 speed contests.
What I would leave alone -
Having a Syllabus dance round for folks who want it is fine. But training coaches, judges and students for 8 sanctioned events is very expensive. If it can support itself, I would leave it alone.
c) To encourage communication among all hustle dance enthusiasts and professionals, thereby creating a forum for hustle dances worldwide.
The Problem -
Communication is great, but we need more participation and less organization first. You simply can’t have good communication with people who don’t want to hear from you or who don’t think you have anything to offer them. The Hustle Lounge ran a huge article and survey on the “Missing youth from Hustle”. It was great for communication. Folks were nearly unanimous on the extent of the problem posting from 50 different zip codes.
What I would Change -
The Spielberg movie Close Encounters showed us that music IS communication – even to aliens. To reach most people, music IS the answer. Not what we play for our dance, but what they listen to now. By slowing our dance down so that it no longer is speed compatible even with vintage disco, we have lost our voice. I would return us to our roots. Playing Celebration, Funkytown and Relight My Fire would certainly clear today’s hustle dance floors, but it would bring back a lot of memories, and even more youth. We know from Lindy that kids LOVE old music. But Lindy has energy our current stuff lacks. Original Club disco at 128 BPM was what we all danced to in the day, and the only model ever proven to attract tons of kids to our dance.
What I would leave alone -
We have people in our group that founded this dance. They are our ambassadors, and should always be respected as such. Ambassadors communicate credibility. We need to keep that in our group.
d) To develop a widely respected and standardized format for competition judges accommodating competitive hustle dancing.
The Problem -
This mission serves a very small subset of hustle dancers and creates learning costs that completely disenfranchise young people. Kids can’t (or won’t) afford a dance that is $65 to learn when Salsa is nearly free. Street dancers are totally left out with this objective.
What I would change -
The syllabus rounds could be applied to one major national competition rather than trying to train and staff judges for eight different events. A Syllabus national champion would be a fine title, w/o all the overhead of creating expensive judge training regimes for every sanctioned event. The current model is a promoters nightmare. Where will they find enough qualified judges?
What I would leave alone -
We should have a syllabus. What we have now is terrific. I believe we should extend the effort to include the original 128 BPM versions of the hustle just as Ballero and Rumba, Quick Step and Fox Trot, Waltz and Viennese are differentiated. So lets create and sanction a syllabus, but for both eventualities (fast and slow), not just the current slower 108 BPM Hustle.
e) To establish an event calendar of recommended Hustle dance events, clubs, activities and dances.
The Problem -
There really isn’t one, since this is a strong suite for the current administration, and those that preceded it.
What I would change -
I would advocate programming for young people and street dancers who don’t want to compete. I would work to make hustle fun again. Disney figured out how to make a cruise ship that specialized in programming for young people and families. We need to program for the people we need back in our ranks before we can expect them to come to an event that looks like a 1972 High School reunion.
What I would leave alone -
Most or our events are fine except they lack programming for young people. I would not touch what sanctioned promoters already do well, but I would encourage them to add the missing parts for youth and street dancers.
f) To develop event sanctioning minimums and guidelines.
The Problem -
Too much organization and too little participation.
What I would change -
Right now we need more good friends rather than just a few perfect ones. Lets face it folks, our ranks are shrinking. I’d far rather loosen guidelines and get a shot at a new town and new event than freeze them out for not holding a syllabus hustle round.
What I would leave alone -
Yes – we need some standards. But we need new blood even more. Lets focus more on recruiting than on restructuring.
I hope this description helps anyone considering my candidacy for President of the IHDA. Should you need to reach me for further inquiry, email me at swingandhustle@gmail.com.

Letters to the Editor
(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month, unfortunately due to space limitations we can not publish them all)

Hi Ron,
To all the instructors that teach at Michael’s on Wednesdays – I just want to say I think it’s great that you contribute your time pro bono. The local hustle dancers at Michael’s are very lucky to receive such excellent instruction! Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with others and for helping us all to become better dancers!
Sincerely,
Mary Keegan
………………………………..

Dear Ron,
thank you for keeping Michele AKA Mikalena Nau’s name alive. She was a fun loving person that many friends didn’t get to know or see that side of her. She was not an angel but did not deserve to go through what she did. I still think about her and have a group photo that was taken at Club Egypt in Philadelphia in the 90’s. She was one of the best natural dances that never took lessons but just danced. She was so much fun to watch. I have so many great memories of her and still think about her daily.
Sincerely,
Sarah Scotto
